Our 2011 Summer Road Trip has been bringing in some exciting sales numbers. Check out the results of our auctions in Milwaukee, Des Moines and Walworth in this issue. The fun and excitement continues as we return to Pheasant Run Resort in beautiful St. Charles, Illinois for our premier Fall event September 15 - 18. One thousand vehicles will cross the block over four big days, headlined by a number of amazing vehicles. The Mecum calendar sports two exciting new auctions in 2011. The Mecum Geneva Lake Antique and Classic Boat Auction, September 25 at the Abbey Resort on Lake Geneva in Fontana, Wisconsin, is an exclusive offering of vintage watercraft and related memorabilia that spans the 20th century. Two weeks later, Mecum will present its inaugural Dallas Auction, October 6-8. Featuring several extraordinarily rare machines from the classic and muscle car era, the auction will broadcast Live on HD Theater from the Dallas Convention Center over three days. As the end of the summer of 2011 begins to arrive, we at Mecum wish all our friends and their families safe travels on their vacations and many happy memories, and invite one and all to join us for the exciting events on the docket this Fall.

Mecum Auctions has been specializing in the sale of collector cars for 24 years, and has become America’s largest Collector Car Auction Company offering over 7,500 vehicles per year. It took David V. Uihlein Sr. decades to accumulate one of the greatest collections of rare engines, vintage parts and racing memorabilia in the world. On the morning of July 8th, Mecum offered the entire collection at No Reserve during the 17th annual Miller Meet at the Milwaukee Mile. Each piece of vintage racing history went home with the highest bidder and the star of the show, a Supercharged Miller 91 engine, hammered for $250,000 on the auction block. This one-of-a-kind event, hosted by the Harry Miller Club, drew a crowd of hundreds and featured some of the most famous Indy Cars reliving their glory on a historic race track. After the auction concluded on Saturday morning, some lucky spectators were offered to go for a ride at the Mile and witnessed the graceful power of these legendary cars first-hand. M

Gone Farmin’ 2011 boasted a 78% sell-through rate August 5 - 6 with over 225 tractors crossing the auction block and sales totaling over $900,000. A six-figure John Deere yielded a crop of green at the show in Walworth, Wisconsin, hammering for $117,500. The 1958 High Crop was beautifully restored and one of nine produced with electric start. The offering included almost every tractor manufacturer imaginable and the total sales doubled the results from last year’s inaugural auction. The highly anticipated John Deere collection of

Estel Theis crossed the block at No Reserve on Saturday afternoon, sending 31 tractors to new homes all over the country. The auction included both restored and unrestored tractors as well as several hundred pieces of memorabilia. “We would like to thank all of the buyers, sellers and spectators that came to Walworth for our 2nd annual tractor auction,” said Dan Mecum, “The combined 80% sell-through rate at both Gone Farmin’ auctions this year indicate a strong demand for vintage tractors.” M

Lake Geneva is famous for its pristine environment, natural beauty and rich, varied history. Ringed by gently sloping natural forests, Lake Geneva’s crystal-clear waters have attracted visitors for 150 years, making it one of North America’s premier vacation destinations and the most widely known summer resort in the Midwest. It was recently honored by the

National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the most “distinctive destinations” in the United States. The air is clean, the water pure, and the climate perfect for outdoor enjoyment. Smooth, welcoming beaches occurring at intervals along the lake’s shoreline are an invitation to swim, while wooded hills provided a cool, welcoming refuge.

John,I regularly hear that certain paperwork can make a car worth more money. What type of documentation adds value to a collector car?- Gus C.

Certainly paperwork/documentation adds to the

desirability and value of collector cars. Some examples include dealer sales agreements, window stickers, build sheets, warranty cards such as Protect-O-Plates and Certicards, and even copies of the original title. In addition, historical photos and owner summaries are useful to verify authenticity. Original build information may be available from the original manufacturer or authorized independent sources such as Galen’s Tag Service for Mopar, Marti Auto Works for Ford, Sloan Museum for Buick, GM Heritage Center and Pontiac Historic Services. Finally, on some makes the VIN and original trim plates contain information that may be decoded for specific engines, options, and colors. Happy sleuthing! - John Kraman M
