At this year’s daytime auction in Monterey, our consignment list is a true testament to our expansive line-up, but with an added twist to our dominating muscle car heritage and some of the most powerful cars ever to hit the racetrack (and the auction block.) Are you ready for some Can-Am thunder? It’s hard to believe that almost a year has gone by, and our return to Dallas is just around the corner. With nearly 800 vehicles already consigned, it looks like the auction will easily become one of the nation’s top 10 collector car auctions in only its second year! Three auction events in two weeks was no sweat last month for the Mecum Crew, who presented the Salmon Brothers Collection to a packed house on Saturday, June 16th, and one week later hosted both the Bloomington Gold and St. Paul auctions on the same day. Thousands from across the country and around the globe gathered to the Mecum Auction in North Little Rock, Arkansas to bid on nearly 140 vehicles spanning one hundred years of

American automotive history from the Salmon Brothers Collection. Total sales for the one-day special auction event were $7 million, with all lots selling at no reserve. The night before the main event, Mecum and the Salmon Family hosted a private reception for registered bidders, friends, and family to preview the cars, and to celebrate the amazing collection that twin brothers Tom and Don Salmon had put together over the last 50 years. The auction began

the following morning amidst a standing room only crowd, with high energy bidding on every lot from beginning to end. “Tom and I had no idea it was going to be this big of a deal,” said Don Salmon. “The Mecum folks went above and beyond all our expectations, and we certainly hope all the new owners enjoy these cars as much as we did,” Salmon added. The top seller of the auction was an AACA-winning 1934 Cadillac

1966 was a great year for the American automobile. Following the wildly successful Ford Mustang and Pontiac GTO, all the Big Three were offering ever more performance-oriented glamour machines to a young generation of affluent buyers seeking excitement and prestige. Besides being the dawn of the so-called muscle car age, it was also the inaugural season of a brand new racing phenomenon - the Canadian-American Challenge Cup. An outgrowth of the earlier and highly successful United States Road Racing Championship series, the Can-Am would alter the

course of American automotive culture more than anyone anticipated at its beginning, for these were in essence the ultimate muscle cars, the wildest racing machines ever conceived; winged chariots powered by bellowing engines of ever-increasing displacement and seemingly unlimited horsepower, eventually capable of speeds surpassing 240 mph, piloted by the world’s greatest drivers. The Can-Am was racing virtually without limits, and it directly inspired the horsepower race that fueled the concurrent popularity of the muscle car. Mecum Auctions has captured the

magic of that wonderful era with its presentation of four iconic Can-Am racers for its 2012 Monterey Daytime Auction. In addition to the 1972 Porsche L&M 917/10 Spyder driven by George Follmer to the 1972 Championship, Mecum will offer a 1970 Lola T165-22 first fielded by Carl Haas, a 1971 McLaren M8E driven by “Quick Vic” Elford and the 1974 Shadow DN-4 piloted by Jackie Oliver to victory at the 1976 Mosport WSC race. Together these fascinating machines comprise the largest and most prestigious such offering of the Monterey Autoweek, and each one has its own special story...

Lola Cars became famous in North America largely through their always competitive Can-Am machines, driven by such stars as Parnelli Jones, Mark Donohue and George Follmer. This 1970 Lola T165 Can-Am was first owned by Carl Haas and driven by Jack Hinkle and Paul Newman in early 70s SCCA competition. Chassis number SL165-22, it was restored in the early 1990s by veteran racer and restorer Bruce Canepa. Powered by an authentic 1970 Chevrolet Chaparral engine boasting over 900 horsepower, it is offered with a complete owner history.

As the Can-Am series progressed and the cars gained more power and top speed, Bruce McLaren’s team continued to develop the fundamentally strong M8 series of racers. The M8E reached its ultimate development with aerodynamic fencing and an integrated rear spoiler to take full advantage of the ever-more-powerful Chevrolet aluminum powerplants. Originally campaigned by Roy Woods racing in 1971, the M8E offered here was driven by Vic Elford, who crashed the car during practice at Laguna Seca. Fully restored by Benton Bryan using an original monocoque tub and equipped with a Lucas-injected all-aluminum Keith Black big block Chevy engine, it was extensively campaigned in vintage racing during the 1980s by both Vic Elford and Benton Bryan.

Five examples of the Shadow DN4 were built for 1974, only 2 of which were used in competition: DN4-1 by Oliver, DN4-3 by Follmer. Only one other made an appearance in competition, and that was two years after the Can-Am’s demise. Since its completion serial number DN4-4A had been kept at Don Nichols’ California shop until his phone rang one day in the summer of 1976. At the other end of the line was Harvey Hudes, owner of Canada’s famed Mosport Park racing circuit. Hudes was beating the bushes to fill out a lightly-populated World Sports Car Championship race grid suffering from the woes of the energy crunch, and he hoped the Shadow and other ex-Can-Am racers would oblige. Nichols took up the challenge, bringing DN4-4A and driver Jackie Oliver across the border to help out his old friend. It was the only appearance by the car in competition and, after taking the pole, setting a new lap record and leading the entire race, it won

and drivers like Jackie Ickx.” After that, it disappeared until just recently, when Don Nichols announced it would be crossing the block at Mecum Auction’s Monterey, CA Daytime Auction on August 18.

It is perhaps the most recognizable Porsche 917 in the world: Roger Penske’s L&M-sponsored 917-10, driven by racing legends Mark Donohue and George Follmer, the latter of whom took the car to the 1972 Can-Am Championship. After months of arduous development and Penske’s trademark preparation the L&M 917-10 debuted at the season-opening 1972 Mosport Can-Am with Penske driver-engineer Donahue at the controls, finishing an impossibly-close second behind Denny Hulme’s McLaren M20. After that, there was no doubt about the 917’s awesome capabilities. George Follmer valiantly took over the driving duties for the second race at Road Atlanta, after Donohue crashed the other team car in testing, breaking a knee and rendering himself unable to drive for the next two months. After initial trouble finding his bearings with the turbocharged flat 12 whose power delivery resembled that of a shotgun, Follmer began a string of dominant

performances that earned Team Penske Racing the 1972 Can-Am Championship, winning five of the season’s nine races and signaling Porsche’s continuing supremacy in the series. The Porsche L&M 917/10 Spyder occupies a special position in racing

history as the car that earned Porsche its first Can-Am Championship, proving the high caliber of the German automaker’s engineering capabilities and its pioneering developments in turbocharging. It is without doubt one of the most significant cars in all of racing history. M

To quote the immortal words of Yogi Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again,” as I head up to Monterey next week to the Red Bull MotoGP at Laguna Seca where exactly 40 years ago in my irresponsible youth as a young “Jack the Lad” promotor, I brought motorcycle racing to this great racetrack in 1972 for the first time, promoting the “Kawasaki Superbike International.” A first for Laguna, which at that time was a pure car racing circuit highlighted by the Cam-Am events, a first for the AMA, and the dawn of the word ‘Superbike’! This year’s visit is to promote Mecum Auctions Monterey event in August, with a display of some of the bikes from The MV Augusta Museum Collection, along side Don Nichols’ original UOP Shadow Can-Am car, one of four Can-Am series gems headlining the racecar lineup; the L&M Porsche 917/10, a McLaren M8 and Chaparral powered Lola, all up on the block next month, and all of them having tested the dreaded Corkscrew! The Model 62 John Deere was the only 100th anniversary tractor for Deere & Company. It was built in 1937 as a prototype to the later Model L, and only 79 of these tractors were made. Since the time of the big prairie steam engines of the late 1800’s companies had been in a race to build smaller more efficient tractors. In the 1930’s almost every farm also had a garden. These 5 to 40 acre gardens supplied their families and local markets with fresh produce. John Deere came up with the 1515 pound, 10 horsepower Model 62 tractor to target this market. The 62 was Deere’s smallest tractor and one of the first of its kind. Another important feature

was that it was the first John Deere to utilize a foot clutch. You can always spot a Model 62 by the cast logo located on the rear differential. That casting sets it apart from any other tractor and when you see it you know you’ve found something special. When I walked into the garage

at the Holland and Son’s John Deere dealership that cast logo grabbed my attention almost immediately. The second thing I noticed was that the tractor had a bottom plow and cultivators. I first spoke with Gary Holland about his tractors at Mecum’s Spring Classic auction back in May. A very short time after I was in Mendota Illinois visiting with him and looking square at the Model 62. Gary’s John Deere Model 62 will be offered at Gone Farmin’ 2012 August 4th Live on Rural TV at approximately 2PM central time. For collectors, John Deere’s Model 62 has proven to be better than money in the bank and a solid, blue chip investment. M

They are the ultimate manifestations of the Detroit-born pony car, built at the height of the muscle car era, both intended to deliver a knockout punch to the competition. Yet while the COPO Camaro and Boss 429 are historic counterparts, each was conceived for a unique purpose. The COPO Camaro was the weapon of choice in Chevrolet marketing boss Vince Piggins’ clandestine campaign to dominate NHRA Super Stock racing, while the Boss 429’s function was to homologate Ford’s new NASCAR racing engine. Both cars accomplished

their respective missions; in the years since, they have become wrapped in legend. And both are exceedingly rare. This 1969 COPO Camaro may be the rarest of all in existence today. One of only two produced in Dover White with a Blue interior, it is one of two delivered to Lamar Walden Performance by Chevrolet Motor Division through Brooks Chevrolet in Atlanta specifically for the 1969 NHRA drag racing program. At the end of the season the consistent 10-second performer was retired to the back of the shop where it sat until the late 1980s,

when it was resurrected with a complete frame-off restoration that included the original engine, a rarity among COPO cars. Lamar ultimately sold the car in the mid-1990s; it now shows a total of just 480 miles. Fortunately for collectors of the breed, this 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, KK1303, never realized its first owner’s plan to race it in NHRA Super Stock competition due to last minute rules changes. Instead, it was abandoned in the middle of preparation and remained dormant until the mid 1980s, when it was discovered and rescued to the dry Arizona

climate. It was restored from the ground up using all NOS parts and the original engine block, and then detailed by Bob Perkins Restoration to exact factory specifications, at which time it showed an incredible 54 miles. Now showing a scant 91 miles, it is a multiple award winner with the prestigious Boss Car Nationals Gold Award among its many credits, and the lowest-mileage example extant. Both of these incredible low-mileage, low-production, highly sought after collectibles will be featured on the Mecum auction block on Saturday September 8th, in Dallas, Texas. M

When I first heard that the year 2000 would be the final year for the Plymouth Division, I was both shocked and saddened. Corporate parent Chrysler Corporation broke the bad news just as the retro themed and Plymouth intended PT Cruiser was receiving industry buzz and ultimately high sales branded as a Chrysler. Of course we now know that all vintage Plymouths have flourished with big demand and high values in the collector car market. The big fin Furys, Hemis, Road Runners, and Barracudas are bona fide icons of automotive history. Who would have thought that before the end of the decade three more storied US brands would meet demise? Not me! But alas, Oldsmobile, founded in 1897, finally ended in 2004 as General Motors was beginning to suffer deep financial woes. This magnificent brand really fueled the future horsepower wars in 1949 with the OHV Rocket V-8 engine, refined the

muscle car with the 442 in 1964, and introduced front wheel advantage with the stunning Toronado in 1966. The Cutlass line was a leader on the sale charts all through the 70’s before beginning to flounder in the 80’s. Perhaps the biggest surprise and shock of all was the discontinuance of Pontiac Motor Division in 2009 while GM was teetering on extinction and surviving only via bankruptcy protection. Over 36 million Pontiacs were built since their beginning in 1928, and the division produced some of the most distinctive and significant cars in history. Models such as Bonneville, Grand Prix, GTO, and Trans Am are household names that cemented Pontiac’s reputation as GM’s “Excitement brand” since the mid-50’s. Even the final GTO in 2006, Grand Prix GXP in 2008, and G8 GT/GXP in 2009, are all LS series V-8 powered, and destined to be collectible in the future. Finally, Mercury was axed

by Ford Motor Company in 2010. Well known and highly regarded for upscale power and appointments since the 1939 launch, Mercury was a great alternative to the lower price Ford and the higher price Lincoln. The relative rarity of sophisticated variants of the vintage Cougar and Cyclone models are some of the most unique, stylish and powerful cars ever built. The Marauder sedan from 2003-2004, with a 4.6L V-8 DOHC 302hp powerplant, heavy-duty equipment, and delicious sinister trim will forever remain a high point in Mercury’s final decade. These 4 brands represent well over 100,000,000 cars sold over 100 years and are firmly established as true American legends. Popular with both the current nostalgia and future legacy buyers, these great cars will continue to support a strong demand and high values in the collector car market. They will live forever! M

In 2008 an energetic group of volunteers banded together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Meadowdale International Raceways. All but forgotten, this “ghost track” is located within Raceway Woods in Carpentersville, Illinois, just 40 miles from downtown Chicago. It was inspiring to find that Meadowdale holds such an important place in the hearts and memories of so many. So inspiring, in fact, something further needed to be done. The beginnings of the Meadowdale International Raceways Preservation Association (MIRPA) took shape that day.

On September 14, 1958, a 3.27-mile road course featuring a steep 180 degree curve known as the “Monza Wall” held its first race with crowd estimates upwards of 100,000. Never again reaching the excitement of the opening weekend, Meadowdale closed in 1969. During its short run, Meadowdale played host to USAC, USRRC, SCCA, Midwestern Council, AMA, Kart, and Snowmobile races as well as the National Police Driving School. Meadowdale saw famous drivers, cars, and teams including Roger Penske, Carl Haas, Fred Lorenzen, Peter

been held on the historic front straight of the old raceway. Past shows have featured the Meister Brauser Team reunion and the 1959 Nickey Chevrolet Purple People Eater Corvette and race team. To pass the winter months, MIRPA hosts its winter banquet and silent auction. We have been privileged to honor the vision and contribution to racing of the some of the best the Motorsports community has to offer. In 2012, we were pleased to honor three-time Indy winner Bobby Unser. The 2011 banquet honored Indy winner Bobby Rahal. On September 15, 2012

the front straight will once again come alive. We will be honoring Carroll Shelby and the 50th anniversary of the Cobra. The feature will be the 1968 SCCA Trans-Am that was held at Meadowdale. A panel discussion on the “Grey Area” in the rules of racing will be presented at the “After the Show” dinner. Scheduled to appear at this time, include John Morton, SCCA National Champion 1970, 71 and 2.5 Trans Am Champion 71, 72; Corvette Hall of Fame Inductee Tony DeLorenzo winner of 22 straight SCCA-A Production races between

1969 and 1971; Ronnie Kaplan, 1968 Trans Am AMC Javelin Team Manager; Don Devine, Meister Brau Scarab driver; Bob McKee, Can Am, Indy, turbine and electric car designer and builder; and Tom Stephani, Nickey Chevrolet Racing Team historian. Meadowdale was a destination fifty years ago and continues to

be today. It seems as though you can still hear the race cars roaring in the distance. If you turn around, will you see them coming?

Probably not, but the preserved memories and history will bring the track alive for the generations to come. M

Signage. It lets people know that your product deserves their attention, and hopefully their patronage. The neon sign seen here is a wonderful melding of two types of signage embraced by a forward-looking company. The result is an example of Road Art that is truly iconic. Prior to the introduction of porcelain signs in the United States in the 1890’s, most businesses depended on painted wood for exterior signage, with all of the durability concerns that comes with wood exposed to the elements. When the Enameled Iron Company in Pennsylvania started to produce porcelain signs, it was an

advertising game-changer. The next big thing was the use of neon gas to make signs. M. W. Travers and William Ramsey in London discovered this gaseous element in 1898. The name is derived from the Greek word “neos” which means “the new gas.” It made its way across the pond in 1923 when the Frenchman Georges Claude, and his company Claude Neon, sold Packard dealer Earle C. Anthony two neon signs on porcelain that read “Packard” for $24,000. It didn’t take long for the new form of advertising to sweep the nation. One of the giants of American

industry, oil firm Texaco, quickly recognized that this medium would help standardize the look of the company’s signage. A truly international organization, Texaco, short for “The Texas Company”, used a single star to denote the Lone Star of Texas, and the mix of porcelain and neon resulted in a simple, easily identifiable sign that can truly be called timeless. Any collection would benefit from the addition of a full-sized Texaco porcelain-neon sign, and this pristine example is one of the best. Like any top-shelf Road Art, demand outstrips supply, so be prepared to spend a bit to get the best. M

Automobiles were created for one purpose; movement. I know, your star car looks wonderful in the garage, but at its core, it’s a machine built to move. Conveying this characteristic by a photo is something few people try, but it’s not that tough to make your vehicle look like it’s an actual road car. The technique is straightforward, and the results are well worth the effort. First, you’re going to need a second person. Now if you’re the one taking the photo, you’ll need to let body #2 drive your car. I understand, this can be tough. The alternative is to have them handle the camera while you drive. This can be tough too. If you don’t

trust them with your car, a camera might be stretching it as well. Regardless of who is driving, here’s the drill; find a straight stretch of road with little or no traffic. Fit the camera with a moderately long telephoto lens, something in the 125mm-200mm range. Program the camera’s shutter speed for about 1/125th of a second. Position the camera about 75-ft from the blacktop, and try to position the sun over the photographers shoulder. Cue the driver, and they should motor past the camera at about 30 mph. It’s important that as the car goes by the camera, it maintains a steady speed. The photographer will track the car as it rolls by,

and as the vehicle reaches a point perpendicular to the camera, the shutter button is pushed. It takes practice to smoothly follow the moving car with a camera. The goal is to show the car tack sharp, while the rest of the world is blurred. Depending on the speed of the car and the speed of the shutter, the blur can be considerable. Use as long a shutter speed as possible while keeping the vehicle sharp. The results surprise you, and when it comes time to publicize your car at a Mecum Auction, a motion photo will grab a buyer’s eye faster than anything else.
