Exterior options include hood pins, chromed outside racing mirrors and the Rallye Road wheels and White-letter Goodyear Polyglas GT tires are correct new replacement items along with new factory shocks, brakes and ignition wires. Finished in the original Jamaica Blue paint with Gold body side pinstriping and Blue vinyl body side trim, the car retains original Black interior with vinyl bucket seats, center console with Slap Stik shifter, Rallye gauges and

oriented mode of transportation. There it was kept for 43 years, during which time it was driven just 16,770 miles. The power train is the stuff of automotive lore: the venerated 426/425 HP Hemi engine with high-duration hydraulic-lifter cam, 10.28:1 compression ratio, forged rotating assembly and dual inline Carter 4-barrel carburetors, in this case topped with the optional Shaker Hood Fresh Air Package and backed by an A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission and a

AM/FM sound. This gorgeous 1970 Hemi Cuda will be offered with the original bill of sale as Lot S144. Ordered March 16, 1966, the first year the car was offered in Blue, this 1966 Shelby GT350 has maintained its pure, from-the-factory condition in part by remaining a one-family car for almost its entire life. Shipped to Nagle Ford in Rochester, New York, the car was originally purchased by George Stowe. Stowe’s car was the envy of

many and best friend John Drysdale made Stowe promise him the first right of refusal upon the off chance he ever decided to sell it. Stowe never could part with the car and continued to keep meticulous care of it until his death in ’93. With the odometer still showing only 52,000 miles, the car was passed on to Stowe’s daughter Sandra Hodges Wohler. Some time later Drysdale finally got his chance to call this gorgeous 350 his own when Wohler agreed to sell it to him recalling the promise her

father had made, and Drysdale didn’t hesitate. Now offered for the first time to the public, still in its pristine, unrestored condition, this 4-speed manual retains all of its original features including the all-black interior set against the Blue paint with white LeMans striping atop the factory-installed ten-spoke wheels. This 1966 Shelby GT350 will cross the block as lot F216, still showing less than 54,000 miles. Also among this dignified unrestored originals group is this show stopping, show topping

1967 Sting Ray coupe, which registers a documented 18,380 original miles and is one of fewer than 100 Corvettes that has been able to achieve Benchmark certification since Bloomington Gold introduced the coveted award in 1991. This highly decorated, unrestored original mid-year has also received NCRS National and Regional Top Flight certification, Chevy Vettefest Gold Spinner and Triple Crown Awards and the NCRS Duntov Award of Excellence. In addition to mostly original Cortez

Silver paint, Black interior, Soft Ray tinted glass and AM/FM radio, factory side exhaust and Rally wheels with Redlines, the car retains the entire original matching numbers driveline: the famed L71 427/435 HP Tri Power engine with solid lifter cam, close ratio Muncie 4-speed manual transmission and Positraction rear end. Documented by the original Protect-O-Plate, this is one of the highest-quality original Tri Power coupes in existence and will ride the red carpet as Lot S136. Featured in the February

edition of the Monthly, this 1968 Chevrolet Biscayne cannot be left out of the mix. One of fewer than 100 with the L72 Turbo Jet 427/425 HP big block engine and the only known factory Tuxedo Black L72 Biscayne in existence, the car remains entirely original with just 720 miles on the odometer and will run as Lot S122. These four rarities comprise only a small sampling of the stunning selection of unrestored original cars that will be offered among the 2,000 car lineup at

Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic. After getting its start on Dana Mecum’s kitchen table back in 1988, the Indianapolis auction has played host to rare muscle machines like these for years and each year “new” ones are discovered by those dedicated treasurer hunters, continuously searching for these elusive rides. The opportunity to take home and preserve a piece of history packaged neatly inside a straight-from-the-factory car will be at Indy this May 14-19. M

It was 1909 when The Texas Company registered its first trademark. The image featured a red star with a green capital “T” in its center. The sheer simplicity of the design most likely played a big role in the public’s quickness to recognize it, and despite subtle changes, this design has survived the test of time and remains incorporated in the company’s logo even today. In 1913 The Texas Company adopted a new moniker, “Texaco,” and introduced a new logo as well. Opting to keep the green “T” inside the red star, the company simply added the “TEXACO” name to the mix and wrapped the package up in a white circle with a red border that read “THE TEXAS COMPANY PETROLEUM PRODUCTS.” After becoming the first oil company to advertise in all 48 states in 1928, Texaco chose to return to its trademark roots and simplify the design of its logo by shedding the outer red border and words and changing the “T’s” outline from black to white for a cleaner look overall. Though there was no doubt that the star with the “T” in its center had become a highly successful identifier for the gas giant, Texaco decided to buck the trend and try on a whole new look in ’63 shrinking the star and tucking it beneath the company name written in huge black letters. The previously white, circle-

shaped background morphed into a six-sided figure with a red outline. Never gaining much steam, the logo was replaced again in 1981 after Texaco administered a survey to the public which confirmed what the company already knew: people identified better with the enduring star. The company was quick to react to the results of the survey and the trademark became a white star with a red capital “T” inside surrounded by a red circle. Though somewhat modernized in style and lacking the signature green color incorporated into every other form of trademark used in the past, the newest logo is really a return to the first registered trademark used in 1909. With Texaco products and signs now in high demand by Road Art and petroliana collectors, we are excited to be offering an original and free-standing Texaco sign dated 1947 as Lot J33 at Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic auction this May 14-19. This magnificently restored sign features lights with a dimmer control and sits proudly atop its custom-made, portable matching base and would be a perfect addition outside any home garage or even indoors to dress up an empty space. ICONIC LOGOFIT TO A “T”

Fans of the Touchstone Pictures 2000 remake of the 1974 cult movie “Gone in 60 Seconds” will recognize this as the original Eleanor, the modified 1967 Ford Mustang piloted by retired master car thief Memphis Raines, played by Nicholas Cage. Several cars were built to handle various duties during the filming of “Gone,” but this is serial number 7R02C179710, the “Hero” car driven by Cage during filming and used in movie close-ups, posters

and promotional materials, in the process launching a whole new trend in Resto Modding. Built by Cinema Vehicle Services with the help of master designer Chip Foose, the body pieces of the car were mocked up on a Mustang using clay and wood. Molds were then made to produce a new fiberglass front end filled with high-powered PIAA driving lights, new fender flares, side skirts and scoops, hood and trunk lid. The front

suspension was replaced with a lowered and reinforced coilover spring arrangement with power rack and pinion steering; 4-wheel disc brakes were installed and Goodyear Eagle F1 tires mounted on Schmidt 8x17-inch Cobra-style wheels. To give the car big-screen performance, it was treated to a 351/400 HP Ford crate engine, which shares room under the modified hood with a front subframe body brace by Total

This progenitor of the Eleanor revolution is relatively untouched inside with the exception of an Autometer Sport Comp Monster tach, fire extinguisher, Go-Baby-Go shift knob button for Line Lock and a switch for activating a nitrous injection system. Seaman Knapp was employed by the government in the early 1900s to promote good farming practices in the South and is known as the pioneer of the demonstration method of teaching better farming. He first put his idea to the test on a Texas farm in 1903 based on the theory that “What a man hears, he may doubt. What a man sees, he could doubt. What a man does, he cannot doubt.” International Harvester Co. (now Case IH) implemented its own large-scale demonstration program in 1970. The tractors used

in the program had magnificent gold paint schemes and were aptly dubbed the “Gold Demonstrators.” The Gold Demonstrators were available for only one model year and today, they are a hard-to-find treasure. Case IH went on the road in 2007 to promote the new 2008 gold signature edition tractors and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of

the popular Steiger tractor and the 20th anniversary of the Magnum tractor. Case IH selected one of the rare Gold Demonstrators to be a part of the display and promotions – an 826. The company leased the 826 and completed the restoration to return it to the way it was the day it was built. The 826 Gold Demo that was displayed at the Case IH corporate headquarters and at farm shows across the Midwest that summer, will now be offered August 10th in Walworth, Wisconsin, at the fourth annual Gone Farmin’ Auction. Charger in pristine condition, he chose a catalog position for Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic auction, May 14-19 in Indianapolis, knowing it would be the best way to promote his blue muscle car. What he didn’t

expect was that his gorgeous car, worth an estimated $125,000 at auction, would become a mere shadow of itself just hours after the photography session ended. Originally Lot F267, the Charger is a one-of-one car that features a numbers-matching hemi. “It was one of the better ones in my collection,” Bowman

said of the Charger. Bowman has built a personal collection consisting exclusively of Dodge models. “I’ve got a variety: a few Dodge fire trucks, Power Wagons and two Super Bees: a V code and an M code.” He’s bought and sold at Mecum’s

Indianapolis auction many times in the past, and said he keeps coming back because it’s always been a good experience. Bowman said it was pleasant working with the Mecum photographer and seeing the results. “It went great,” he said, “I was really happy with it.” Just hours after the photo shoot the delightful day turned disasterous. “I’m still not really sure what happened,” Bowman explained. “I’d been out in the garage working when I looked over and suddenly there was smoke pouring out of the other side of the building.” He quickly searched for a way to put out the unexplained flames coming from beneath the hood of his pristine Charger. “I looked everywhere for the fire extinguisher, but finally had to run the 100 yards to my house for one, ” Bowman recalled. “By the time I returned, there was too much smoke to get back in the building.” It was another 15 agonizing minutes before the fire department arrived to douse the growing flames. “It was bad. I thought I was going to lose them all,” Bowman said of his prized collection housed inside the

smoking building. The garage was nearly a total loss, yet amazingly, all but his Charger escaped with nothing more than minor smoke damage. When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, his blue beauty was no longer so. In fact, it was no longer even blue. Sitting along the far wall of the garage was something dismally different than what had been shining in the sun just hours earlier. The check Bowman received from his insurance company that deemed the car a total loss paled in comparison to the car’s actual worth. Still, with all the history

that continues to thrive beneath its burnt outer shell, Bowman couldn’t bear to see the car hauled off to the dump, so he bought it right back. Though he has little experience in restoration, Bowman knows that someone out there would love to get their hands on the project. “If someone

really wants the car, who am I to say no? The drivetrain is still okay, the engine is burned but it still turns over and it’s a matching numbers hemi, so it’s definitely worth the time if someone wanted to restore it.” Bowman knows the original, largest and best muscle car auction is still the paramount place to find a new owner for his once-perfect 1967 Hemi Charger so it will continue on as a consignment and cross the block at Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic as lot number W198. As far as what to expect from bidders, Bowman said, “I really have no idea.” M

In photography, we embrace math, sort of. One of the most commonly used terms in automotive photography is called the ¾-shot. Its name describes the angle, or fraction, that the camera is in relation to the subject, in this case, a Camaro. Like most photographers, I’m better at letting an image demonstrate what I’m trying to describe. Note how the first photo shows

the front of the Camaro well, but very little of its side is visible. This shot could be coined a front 7/8. It’s a good shot, but when we’re limited to the number of shots we can use to represent a car, we want each one to pack the most punch. Now look at the second photo. There’s an equal amount of the side and front showing. This essentially shows half of the vehicle. If I were to walk around to the other end of

the car and position the camera to show the driver’s side and rear, similar to this image, it would be called a rear ¾, and it would show the other half of the car. When you’re taking photos of your car to send to Mecum Auctions, try capturing front and rear ¾ angles. It will ensure that your car is shown at its best. And that usually translates to more interest, which equals higher bids at auction. M

in Rally Red with Black interior, this car comes equipped with its original numbers matching drivetrain including the 327/350 HP engine mated to a 4-speed transmission with Positraction rear axle; a desirable bonus to the car’s list of features is the optional factory-air conditioning. This from-the-factory Coupe is extremely well documented and comes with the original window sticker, sales invoice, title history and service records dating back to the year it was built. This 1967 Corvette Convertible (below) is original and unrestored touting Serial #00007 – a number which designates its status as a pilot car and only the seventh one to roll off the assembly line for the

‘67 model year. Equipped with a 327/300 HP engine accompanied by a 4-speed transmission, this top-optional ride still wears its original Rally Red paint with Black interior. Especially unique to this particular Corvette are the two small, filled holes on both fenders that can be seen just beneath the surface of the car’s original paint. As an early production car, it was factory-fitted with ’66 fenders made to look like those of a ’67 by simply filling the holes where the fender badges were left off. The 1967 design omitted the badge sported by ‘66s, but this frugal use of leftover parts by GM now serves to highlight the originality of this untouched piece of history. M
