Wow, what a busy time of the year we are in right now! First, let me thank you, our customers, for making INDY’10 an epic, record setting event! Nearly $42 Million in sales and a 66% sell rate has made it THE national annual collector car event of the year. July means a return to Des Moines IA, and we’re excited to present a diverse assortment of collector cars for this two day event, which will be broadcast live on Discovery Network’s HD Theater. Check out some of the Des Moines consignments featured in this newsletter. Just around the corner now is Monterey and many of you have already seen the news about our exciting lead car: a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT TdF that won its class at Le Mans! That, combined with an expanded two day format, 400 cars, and live HD Theater television coverage, make Mecum’s Monterey Auction an event that you will not want to miss! Also in August, just prior to Monterey, Mecum will expand its auction services to include vintage and antique tractors, with its inaugural Gone Farmin’ 2010 dedicated tractor auction to be held in Walworth, Wisconsin. A sneak peek of some of the early consignments were on display at Spring Classic, and they looked and sounded great!

Safe summer travels, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events –

Tops $41Million in Sales The auction’s top-selling vehicle was the 1963 Harley J. Earl Corvette, which sold for $925,000. Featuring a 327 cubic inch engine, the Corvette boasts a 4-speed manual transmission; distinct dual instrument panels and stainless steel side-exit exhausts that sprout from behind the front wheel wells; and chrome trim, exterior emblems, interior control knobs and four-wheel disc brakes that are all pre-production 1965 parts. A hand-written number code inside the door trim panel confirms Shop Order (S.O.) 10323, indicating a special hand-built, one-of-a-kind Corvette. More than 30,000 buyers, sellers and general car enthusiasts attended this year’s auction. Complete results are available to Mecum InfoNet members, which is free to join at www.Mecum.com. Mecum Auction sold more than 1,000 vehicles at their 23rd Annual Original Spring Classic Auction, May 19-23, 2010, in Indianapolis, Ind., where they offered an eclectic mix of classic muscle, race cars, trucks and even tractors. Total gross sales (excluding buyer’s premium) for the five-day auction were $41.7 million. “A high-energy crowd and eager bidders participated in our flagship Original Spring Classic Auction, which had a final sell-through rate of 66%,” said President Dana Mecum. “As our largest annual event, we strive to give enthusiasts a wide variety of vehicles to see, enjoy and purchase. The buildings at the Indiana State Fairgrounds were packed wall to wall with everything from rare pace cars, exotic Mercedes-Benz and Model T’s to wooden boats, a Howard airplane and neon signs. There truly was something for every taste and budget.”

Getting Prepared to Sell Your Vehicle at AuctionMECUM101

the auction process. From the first crank out of the garage for transport, to the final start up, and every time in between, the draw can be hard on a weak or undercharged battery. Potential buyers like to see cars cross the block on their own power.3.Maintain your vehicle’s appearance. One of the easiest ways to attract potential buyers to your vehicle is with a little “curb appeal.” A fully detailed vehicle will attract more looks than a dirty one. Dirt, dust, and grime may give the illusion that a vehicle is in poor condition, while clean shiny paint, crystal clear glass and gleaming whitewalls will allow everyone to see your vehicle’s full potential. Be sure to check on your vehicle often to ensure it stays clean throughout the auction. While there are a number of preventative maintenance items that should always take place during the care of precious collector cars, focusing on these three easy tasks will help increase your selling potential at auction and allow you to better enjoy your Mecum Auction experience! M

After the decision has been made to sell your vehicle at auction, there are a few simple steps to take to help ensure the experience for you and your vehicle is a pleasant one. Spending just a few extra minutes and couple extra dollars at home in the garage, could be the difference between selling or not selling your vehicle.1.Engines love clean, fresh gasoline. The higher the octane the better! While not readily available at your local corner gas station, higher octane racing fuels may be available from area oil distributors or even a neighborhood speed shop. If your vehicle has been sitting for a long time in storage, the fuel in the tank may be stale and hinder performance. Siphoning or draining old gas and adding 5 gallons of fresh fuel will not only help keep your vehicle running better, but it will give you peace of mind knowing that you have enough fuel in the tank for the entire event.2.Charge your battery. With a brand new, or fully charged battery, your vehicle stands a better chance at making it through the many starts and stops of

MEET THE MECUM TEAM

GINO PIACENTINE has been in the food industry his entire life. After many years as owner/operator of a deli/catering business, Gino has seemingly done it all. “Food is my blood,” says Piacentine. An avid autocross racer, Piacentine’s network of friends in the racing world led his path to Mecum Auctions. Today, Gino is able to combine his passion for food with his love for cars as he manages the food/beverage logistics for the entire staff at Mecum. “Taking care of people is what I do,” says Piacentine. “Nothing gives me more satisfaction than knowing that what I provide keeps staff energy high, and the smiles on their faces, as these are the hardest working people I know.” M

SHERRY WARD and Mecum Auctions crossed paths by mere coincidence a little over 22 years ago. As Mecum was in great need of a License and Title Clerk, Sherry was hired from a referral as she was a known title guru in the wholesale/dealer auction industry. A great fit to the Mecum family, she has performed the onsite title work at most auctions ever since. Just 3 months ago, Sherry joined the Mecum staff full time at the home office in Marengo, IL. Close attention to detail, a high level of customer service, and a natural ability to put a smile on a face, put simply is Sherry Ward. M

BOBBY McGLOTHLEN and his 23 years of auctioneer experience have worked with Mecum Auctions time after time dating back to the mid 90s. Bobby is known best amongst the Mecum family as Dana’s “utility man,” filling the void wherever help is needed on the block. From Ringman to Auctioneer, and anything in between, count on Bobby for his dedicated hard work, inspiring upbeat attitude, and comical interactions with the crowd. When asked about his memorable experiences with Mecum, McGlothlen replies, “It’s been great to watch Dana and his family grow up in the auction business, and to have my family be part of it all. The great venues, the great cars, and the great people makes it all worth while.” M
