Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On the weekend of Memorial Day, let us pray for those who have given their lives in war. Let us also pray that all wars will end and no more lives will be lost.

Memorial Day Meaning – The History

Memorial Day was first widely observed in May 1868. The celebration commemorated the sacrifices of the Civil War and the proclamation was made by General John A Logan.

Following the proclamation, participants decorated graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.

In years since World War I, the day has become a celebration of honor for those who died in all America’s wars, as well as those who are Veterans and current members of the US

military. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. The United States celebrates this holiday the last Monday of May.

A Day of Honor

Does Memorial Day have meaning to you? Many communities around the United States have memorial day events at cemeteries where veterans and spiritual leaders speak. Other

cities and towns host parades to honor the military. However, in many cities around the country, these events have been forgotten.

It is important for Americans to take time to remember the sacrifices that bought their freedom. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate this important American holiday:

* Send a note of thanks to Veterans you know.* If you know someone who has lost a loved one in battle, offer to help with a household

project or help meet a special need they have.* Visit a local cemetery and place flags or flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

Fly the American flag at half-staff until noon.* Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 pm.

Pause and think upon the meaning of Memorial Day.* Pray for God’s blessing on America.

Ask for God’s protection over all branches of our military.

Estimados Hermanos/as en Cristo,

Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie,

Dzień Pamięci Znaczenie - historia

Dzień Pamięci został po raz pierwszy zaobserwowany w maju 1868 r.Uroczystość upamiętnia ofiary wojny domowej, a proklamację złożył generał

John A Logan.

weteranami i obecnymi członkami armii amerykańskiej.

W 1971 r. Dzień Pamięci został ogłoszony świętem narodowym. StanyZjednoczone obchodzą to święto w ostatni poniedziałek maja.

Experience and data teach us that financial crises, home confinement and prolonged stress exacerbate the

frequency and intensity of domestic violence. It is no surprise that the Covid-19 pandemic has made life more

dangerous for many already at risk in our country. The Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline reports that calls for help have increased 50% in March, from 60 to 90 a day. Some

victims were about to leave their abuser, but now he is home all the time, and they have less opportunity to free themselves. Some are in counseling, and now in-person

services are unavailable. Some abusers are more angry by loss of work or home quarantine and thus more threatening

to their partners. If you know or suspect someone is a victim, please check on them! If they are in immediate

need, help them call 911, the National DV Hotline: 800-799-7233, the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline:

877-863-6338,or another reputable DV resource to help them connect with support and services.

Domestic Violence

“Cardinal O’Connor preached most powerfully by his example the necessity of seeing in every human being, from the first moment of conception to the last moment of natural death and every moment in between ... the image of a God to be

loved and served. What a great legacy he has left us in his constant reminder that the Church must be always

unambiguously Pro-Life.”Cardinal Bernard Law, in his homily delivered at the funeral of

New York’s Cardinal John O’Connor

Parish Mission Statement

We Believe that God is Love, and when we live in love we live in God and God lives in

us! Therefore we, the Parish Family of Saint Turibius, dedicate ourselves to living out

Christ’s Great Commandment: we will love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength, and we will show our love for God

by the way we love and care for one another. To this end, we will respond to our baptismal

call, strengthened by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and empowered by

the Holy Spirit. As a Family of Faith that has an Attitude of Gratitude for the gifts God has given to us, we will share our time, our talent

and our treasure with each other. We welcome into our parish family all people, because we

believe that together we are the Body of Christ and together we can bring the love, peace,

forgiveness, healing, and joy of Christ into our community in ways we never could have if we were to remain apart. May all who meet us, who worship with us, who work and play with

us, know we are Christians by our love!
