PASTOR’S NOTES

2 | June 2, 2019

UP, UP, AND AWAY? It is common thinking to believe that Christ’s Ascension into heaven somehow removes him from earth and that the Holy Spirit becomes some kind of substitution for his presence here. The Holy Trinity can never be divided and always exists in rela-tionship with each other, whole and intact. How, then, are we to think of this event we celebrate? If Christ is now fully glorified and ascended into heaven, how can he still be here? St. Augustine says: “Why do we on earth not strive to find rest with him in heaven even now, through the faith, hope and love that unites us to him? While in heaven he is also with us; and we while on earth are with him. He is here with us by his divinity, his power and his love. We cannot be in heaven, as he is on earth, by divinity, but in him we can be there by love.” God, in all of the fullness of the Holy Trinity, transcends heaven and earth and time and space. He is present to the past and the future as much as he is to the present. We touch the undivided, intimate presence of God when we live the virtues of faith, hope, and love. These virtues flow from the essence of His being and con-nect us intimately with Him. As important as it is to “look up” to God, it is even more im-portant to look within and look without. Our world, and even our Church, finds itself out of focus and losing touch with their com-pass and true north. While there is a lot of good happening around us and sacrifices are made every moment, there is also a great deal of dysfunction and evil. Our true “reason for being” is distorted and conflicting, and often harmful voices are com-peting for our attention and allegiance. The tyranny of the politi-cally correct is reigning supreme, and less regard is given to what is true and essential. This is why, at its core, this celebration of Christ’s Ascension into heaven propels us to look within to the virtues of faith, hope, and love that God has given us and look without and get about the business of preaching the Good News. What, essentially, is this Good News? It’s quite simple: we are hardwired to be in relationship with God eternally in heaven, and we can share in God’s heavenly glory while we journey on earth. Humanity needs to learn to connect the dots and realize that the very things it relies upon so often each day (faith, hope, and love) are not there because of its own doing or simply because it comes with the package. Faith, hope, and love exist because of God’s gener-ous self-gift. Christ is not further removed from us but more fully and inwardly connected. The author of “The Cloud of Unknowing” tells us that the work of contemplation is “an interior vital adventure pursued in the Spirit.” The Ascension does not direct us to simply look up and fix our gaze upon the heavens but to embark upon this won-derful, exciting interior adventure in which we find ourselves more and more intimately linked and connected to the Ascend-ed Christ through the timeless virtues of faith, hope, and love. This adventure leads us not only to the incredible Trinitarian intimacy of God’s presence but to our brothers and sisters, our own blessedness, and the world we have been asked to man-

age. Have you ever found yourself wondering what all of the ten-sions and conflicts we are experiencing in our world and in our Church are saying about where we have come as a people and where we are going? How do you find yourself answering that question? With Christ’s mission now complete, God’s message to humanity is echoed loud and clear. New life awaits all those who desire it! God never gives up on creating and recreating all that He has made and sustains. As dire and dead as things may seem, there is always new life to be found. The temptation is to live in the frustration, anger, fear, disillusionment, apathy, hopelessness, and even despair. Some may even believe that the human race has gotten to the point of no return. Today, however, we are asked not to give up! We are commissioned once again to be witnesses to the truth, and the Holy Spirit will help us accom-plish our goals. What has the risen and ascended Christ done for you? Take your answer to that question and bring it to others, not necessarily by using words but by the example of your life. If the true light of faith is shining within you, people, by the work of the Holy Spirit, will be drawn to you. If you have really discovered a pearl of great price, others will want one, too. We cannot give up on hu-manity, and we cannot give up on the Gospel. When the Risen Christ saw the disciples that last time, he did not leave them with a specific set of instructions, intricate for-mularies or prayers to say, or condemnations to meet out to those who have erred. He kept it simple: preach in my name. It is our task to help people come to true repentance by adjusting the focus of their lives, reorienting their compass, and discover-ing the heavenly presence of Christ by following the virtues of faith, hope, and love. Then, humanity will no longer be wallowing in the darkness of destruction but living the ascended life that God has promised.

Rev. Mark Suslenko

PRAYER O God unto whom all hearts lie open

unto whom desire is eloquent and from whom no secret thing is hidden;

purify the thoughts of my heart by the outpouring of your Spirit

that I may love you with a perfect love and praise you as you deserve. Amen.

NOTAS DEL PASTOR

St Peter the Apostle | 3

Nunca man-damos a nadie.

SACRAMENTS INFANT BAPTISM The sacrament of baptism for infants is celebrated during Mass. If you are inter-ested in having your child baptized, please make contact Kristine Almada at 760.689.6208 or [email protected] BAUTIZOS Se celebran una vez por mes a las 12PM. RCIA: RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (How Do I Become A Catholic?) If you are interested in finding out more about the Catholic faith, or are missing some of your sacraments please contact Kristine Almada at 760.689.6208 or [email protected] CONFIRMATION Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacra-ment of Confirmation together make up the “Sacraments of Christian Initia-tion”. The reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the com-pletion of baptismal grace. The mini-mum age for the reception of the Sacra-ment of Confirmation is 15 for those already baptized. The policy of the par-ish is to accept candidates for Confirma-tion who are in the 9th grade and up to 11th grade. Those who are 18 years of age or above are to be enrolled in the adult Confirmation program. The two-year preparation process aims to lead the candidate to a more intimate union with Jesus Christ and more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his ac-tions, his gifts and his biddings – in or-der to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. Candidates are expected to attend scheduled faith formation sessions, re-treats, service outreach and attend Mass regularly as they prepare their hearts to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. For information contact Toney Renteria at 760.689.6209

The clergy needs our prayers as much as we need theirs. Would you like to be part of a new Ministry? The Seven Sisters Apostolate is a call to strength-en the Church by ensuring that a Holy Hour is prayed each day of the week for the sole intention of a specific priest or bishop—a “holy wasting” (cf. Mt. 26:10) or lavishing of prayer for his deeper conformity to Christ. We are looking for 6 women to be part of a prayer group for our Pastor. Please email Shirley Chavez at [email protected] for more information.

THE WORD AMONG US Grow closer to God this Easter season! Pick up a copy of the devotional publi-cation The Word Among Us and spend 5 to 10 minutes each day reflecting on the word of God for your life. Copies are located at the church exits. The Word Among Us features uplifting and thought-provoking meditations based on the daily Mass readings. • The June issue will help you understand the truth of who you are and who God is—and the truth will set you free. • The July/August summer issue speaks of God’s faithful, covenant love—and why it matters to you. • The September issue on the Beatitudes shows how you can be poor in

spirit, merciful, and a peacemaker in your daily life. Please pick up a copy as each issue becomes available and experience the joy of hearing from God each day!

INFANT BAPTISM PREPARATION SEMINAR The next Infant Baptism Preparation Seminar for par-ents and Godparents will be held on Saturday, June 8th at 9:00 a.m. This seminar may be attended while you are expecting your child. It is also for those who are planning a bap-tism in the coming months. Please contact Kristine Almada at 760-689-6208 for more information or to register

Children are dismissed from the 9am Mass with a blessing for the Liturgy of the Word aided by catechists using stories, songs and age appropriate activities. They return to Mass during the preparation of the gifts, to join their families and to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Children’s Liturgy of the Word plants the seeds of faith that will grow with the nurturing of the Christian fami-ly and the help of the Holy Spirit. Do You Love Me? Tend My Sheep We have a wonderful time with the children! We teach in teams of two leaders, Septem-ber through mid-summer. Each team is scheduled to lead a liturgy once a month. You can participate with friends and create your own team or you can join an experi-enced team. Lesson plans are provided for you, yet each lesson allows for flexibility and creativity. QUESTION OF THE WEEK PREGUNTAS DE LA SEMANA • The final episode in the Gospel of Luke is Jesus' ascension into

heaven. Luke tells us the disciples "returned to Jerusalem with great joy" on their way back from Bethany, about 1.5 miles away. What do you imagine the disciples talked about on this brief journey home?

"My deepest vocation is to be a witness to the glimpses of God I have

“For every pain we must bear, For every burden, every care,

There’s a reason.

For every grief that bows the head For every teardrop that is shed,

There’s a reason.

For every hurt, for every plight, For every lonely, pain-racked night,

There’s a reason.

But if we trust God, as we should It will turn out for our good.

He knows the reason.” Author Unknown
