Ascension Sunday Some years ago, the bishops of the United States allowed for the option of moving the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord from the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter to the next Sunday. The bishops recognize the importance of the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. And they also recognize the reality that most Catholics do not attend Holy Days of Obligation. Therefore, so that the People of God could celebrate this great feast, they allowed the option for a particular bishop within his own diocese to transfer the feast to Sunday. Thus today, we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord.
Similarly, the bishops changed the level of obligation for Holy Days when they fall on Saturday or Monday (except for the feast of the Immaculate Conception because she is the patroness of the United States). This means that if a holy day of obligation falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is removed, however it remains a solemn feast day.
Bishop Elect Brendan Cahill As many of you already know, Pope Francis has named Fr. Brendan Cahill as the new bishop of the Diocese of Victoria. Many of you remember and know Bishop-elect Cahill from when he was a parochial vicar here at Christ the Good Shepherd. What a wonderful honor for him and a great gift he will be to the Diocese of Victoria. Our archdiocese is planning a Mass of Thanksgiving for him at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown on Monday, June 22 at 7 p.m. everyone is welcome. Many have asked me about his ordination in Victoria. As of the writing of this column, I do not know any details. I do know, however, that the cathedral in Victoria is not very large, so there may be limited seating. Let us continue to keep Bishop-elect Cahill and the people of the Diocese of Victoria in our prayers.
Newcomers to CGS This summer, a seminarian will be with us working in the parish in different ministries. I am not exactly sure when he will come, but it will be a summer assignment. A second seminarian will come to us at the end of August to spend a year of ministry—a pastoral year. We look forward to these young men being here. Also, I invite you to please pray that the Holy Spirit send us a parochial vicar in the new assignments in July. We could really use the help.
I will be away from the parish from May 18—May 22 attending a Board Meeting for the Southwest Liturgical Conference (SWLC). We are preparing for two upcoming conferences, one in Las Cruces, New Mexico this summer, the Hispanic Pastoral Musicians Conference, and the other in San Antonio next January. Domingo de la Ascensión Hace algunos años, los obispos de los Estados Unidos permitieron la opción de mover la fiesta de la ascensión del señor del jueves de la sexta semana de Pascua para el próximo domingo. NAM is partnering with Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers which is a faith based nonprofit whose mission is to promote senior
independent living by providing free transportation and other services such as: transportation for doctor and clinic appointments, (they do not drive to the medical center), prescriptions, and grocery shopping, remaining with care receiver throughout a medical appointment, telephone reassurance calls, companionship visits. For: 65 years or older and ambulatory (cane or walker acceptable), must live within one of the 11 Houston area zip codes, and not diagnosed with a mental illness or Alzheimer’s.
