Christ Remains with Us until the End of Time
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This Sunday, the Church celebrates the [transferred feast of the] Ascension of the Lord. Forty days after Christ rose from the dead, He now ascends to the Father. Be-fore He ascends, the eleven apostles gather around Him to worship, but the passage says they doubted (Mt 28:17). In their humanity, they must have been sad to see the Lord go, but He assures them: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Mt 28:18). Omnipotence, an attribute belonging exclusively to God, belongs to Him: He is confirming the faith of His worshippers; and He is also telling them that the authority which He is going to give them to equip them to carry out their mission to the whole world, derives from His own divine authority. Christ then gives the “Great Commission”: to baptize in the Name of the Most Holy Trinity and to teach all that He has commanded. And for the last 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has been faithful to this mandate of the Lord. The Church and her teachings are a gift because they help us in discerning God’s will for our lives; the Church keeps us on the right track; she protects the Holy Bible from being misinter-preted. Jesus promises us, “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). He also promised us that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church (Mt 16:18). And so, despite the trends, philosophies, and calamities that come and go in the world — including pandemics — the Church stands strong, built on solid rock. Even though Christ ascended to the right hand of the Father, He promises to be with us always until the end of time. His presence is through the Church, but the way Christ has left Himself for us is through the Most Holy Eucharist. This presence of Christ is probably one we take for granted all too often. Covid-19 certainly has put this reality in perspective. In the Mass, Jesus takes normal bread and wine and converts it into His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. He is our Bread of Life, the one who feeds us with Himself. In this Mass, let us ask the Lord to help us believe, to increase our faith, and to dispel doubt.

Cristo permanece con nosotros hasta el fin de los tiempos
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: Este domingo, la Iglesia celebra la [fiesta transferida de la Ascensión del Señor. Cuarenta días después de que Cristo resucitó de los muertos, ahora asciende al Pa-dre. Antes de ascender, los once apóstoles se reúnen a su alrededor para adorar, pero el pasaje dice que dudaban (Mt 28:17). En su humanidad, deben haber estado tristes de ver al Señor irse, pero Él les asegura: "Todo el poder en el cielo y en la tierra me ha sido dado" (Mt 28:18). Y así, a pesar de las tendencias, filosofías y calamidades que van y vienen en el mundo, incluidas las pandemias, la Iglesia se mantiene firme, construida sobre roca sólida. Aunque Cristo ascendió a la diestra del Padre, promete estar con nosotros siem-pre hasta el final de los tiempos. En esta misa, pidamos al Señor que nos ayude a creer, a aumentar nuestra fe y a disipar las dudas.
