    PragjyotishpuraalongwithDurjaya(NorthGuwahati)werethecapitalsoftheancientstateofKamarupaundertheVarmanandPaladynasties.[3][4][5][6][7]ManyancientHindutemplesareinthecity,soalsoknownasthe"TheCityofTemples".Dispur,thecapitaloftheIndianstateofAssam,isinthecircuitcityregionlocatedwithinGuwahatiandistheseatoftheGovernmentofAssam.

    ThecityliesbetweenthebanksoftheBrahmaputraRiverandthefoothillsoftheShillongplateau,withLGBInternationalAirporttothewestandthetownofNarengitotheeast.ItisgraduallybeingexpandedasNorthGuwahatitothenorthernbankoftheBrahmaputra.ThenotedMadanKamdevissituated30kilometres(19mi)fromGuwahati.TheGuwahatiMunicipalCorporation,thecity'slocalgovernment,administersanareaof216squarekilometres(83sqmi),whiletheGuwahatiMetropolitanDevelopmentAuthority,theplanninganddevelopmentbodyadministersanareaof254squarekilometres(98sqmi).[8]

    GuwahatiisamajorcommercialandeducationalhubofAssamandthenortheasternregionofIndia,andishometopremierinstitutionssuchastheIndianInstituteofTechnologyGuwahati,GauhatiUniversity,andCottonCollege.Thecityisamajorcenterforculturalactivitiesandsportingevents,aswellasacenterforadministrativeandpoliticalactivitiesofAssam,andimportantregionalhubfortransportation.

    TheGuwahatiregionhostsdiversewildlifeincludingrareanimalssuchasAsianelephants,pythons,tigers,rhinoceros,gaurs,primatespecies,andendangeredbirds.[9][10]

    ThenameGuwahatiisaportmanteauwordconsistingoftheAssamesewords'guwa'(arecanut)and'haat'(marketplace).Priortocolonialrule,thenamewasspelledasGowhatty,andwasthenanglicizedasGauhatiduringBritishcolonialrule.Thenamewaschangedtoitspresentforminthelate1980stoconformtothelocalpronunciation.

    EpigraphicsourcesplacethecapitalsofmanyancientkingdomsinGuwahati.ItwasthecapitalofthekingsNarakasuraandBhagadattaaccordingtotheMahabharata.[11]LocatedwithinGuwahatiistheancientsaktitempleofGoddessKamakhyainNilachalhill(animportantseatofTantricandVajrayanaBuddhism),theancientanduniqueastrologicaltempleNavagrahainChitrachalHill,andarchaeologicalremainsinBasistaandotherarchaeologicallocationsofmythologicalimportance.

    TheAmbari[12][13]excavationstracethecitytothe4thcenturyAD.Duringearlierperiodsofthecity'shistoryitwasknownasPragjyotishpura,andwasthecapitalofAssamundertheVarmanDynastyoftheKamarupakingdom.DescriptionsbyXuanzang(HiuenTsang)revealthatduringthereignoftheVarmankingBhaskarVarman(7thcenturyAD)thecitystretchedforabout30li(15km)[14]andaccordingtoXuanzangwasaprincipalbaseforastrongnavalforceof30,000warboats,withofficerswhowereexpertsinsearoutesfromtheIndianOceantoChina.ThecityremainedasthecapitalofAssamuntilthe10th11thcenturyADundertheruleofthePaladynasty.ArchaeologicalevidencebyexcavationsinAmbari,andexcavatedbrickwallsandhousesdiscoveredfuringconstructionofthepresentCottonCollege'sauditoriumsuggestthecitywasofeconomicandstrategicimportanceuntilthe9th11thcenturyAD.

    MedievalEra

    Betweenthe12thand15thcenturiesAD,afterthedestructionoftheKamatakingdom,thecitybecamemainlyastrategicoutpostoftheKochHajoandAhomkingdom.WhenthewesternpartoftheKochKingdom(KochBihar)felltotheMughals,theeasternhalf(KochHajo)eventuallybecameaprotectorateofAhom.Althoughtheborderbetweenthepowers(AhomsandMughals)fluctuatedbetweentheKartoyariver(nowinNorthBengal)totheManasandBarnadirivers,Guwahatiremainedanimportantoutpost.

    ThecitywastheseatoftheBorphukan,thecivilmilitaryauthorityoftheLowerAssamregionappointedbytheAhomkings.TheBorphukan'sresidencewasinthepresentFancyBazaararea,andhiscouncilhall,calledDopdar,wasabout300yards(270m)tothewestoftheBharalustream.TheMajindarBaruah,thepersonalsecretaryoftheBorphukan,hadhisresidenceinthepresentdaydeputycommissioner'sresidence.[15]

    TheMughalsinvadedAssamseventeentimes,andtheyweredefeatedbytheAhomsinBattleofItakhuliandBattleofSaraighat.DuringtheBattleofSaraighat,foughtinSaraighatin1671,theMughalswereoverrunduetothestrongleadershipandhardworkofLachitBorphukan.TherewasanancientboatyardinBrahmaputra,probablyusedbytheAhomsinmedievaltimes.Medievalconstructionsincludetemples,ramparts,etc.inthecity.[16][17]

    ThecityexperiencedabriefperiodofBurmeseruleduringtheBurmeseinvasionsofAssamfrom1817to1826.AftertheFirstAngloBurmeseWar,thecitybecameapartoftheBritishIndianEmpireVideYandaboTeatyon24thFeb1826.Later,thecitywasanactivesiteoftheIndianIndependenceMovement,beingthebirthplaceofmanyindependenceactivists.[18]Afterindependence,thecitybecamethecapitalofthestateofAssam.

    Guwahati's'urbanform'radiatesfromacentralcorewithgrowthcorridorsradiatingandextendingtowardsthesouth,eastandwest.Duringthepastfewdecades,southernGuwahatiareassuchasGaneshguri,Beltola,Panjabari,Jatia,Kahilipara,etc.,beganformingasouthernsubcentersurroundingthecapitalcomplexatDispur.

    Thecorearea[21]consistsoftheoldcitywithPanBazaar,PaltanBazaar,FancyBazaarandUzanBazaar,witheachareafacilitatinguniqueurbanactivities.WhilePaltanBazaaristhehubfortransportationandhotels,PanBazaariscenteredaroundeducation,administrative,culturalactivities,officesandrestaurants.FancyBazaaristhehubforretailandWHOLESALE commercialactivitiesinthecity,andUzanBazaarmainlycontainsadministrative,retailandresidentialareas.Ulubari,LachitNagar,ChandmariandZooRoad(R.G.BaruahRoad),whichhaveamixofretailcommercialandresidentialareas,canalsobeconsideredadditionalpartsofthecore.

    ThemostimportantcorridorisalongtheGuwahatiShillong(GS)Roadtowardsthesouth(almost15kmfromthecitycenter).TheGSRoadisanimportantcommercialareawithretail,WHOLESALE andofficesdevelopedalongthemainroaditisadenselybuiltresidentialareaintheinnerparts.ThecapitalcomplexofAssamatDispurisinthiscorridor.ThiscorridorhasfacilitatedthegrowthofasoutherncitysubcenteratGaneshguri,alongwithotherresidentialareastothesouthdevelopedduringthepastfewdecades.

    Thecorridorextendingtowardsthewest(around30kmfromthecitycenter)containsarailroadlinkingGuwahatiandotherpartsoftheNorthEasternRegioneastofGuwahatitorestofwesternAssamandIndia.ThecorridorlinksresidentialandhistoricallyimportantareassuchasNilachalHill(Kamakhya),Pandu,andMaligaon(headquartersofNortheastFrontierRailways)beforeitseparatesintotwo:onetowardsNorthGuwahatiandtheothercontinuingwesttowardsGuwahatiAirportviatheUniversityofGauhati(Jalukbari).Therearemanyriverports/jettiesalongthiscorridor.

    Thethirdmajorcorridorextendstowardstheeast(around15kmfromthecitycenter)linkingNoonmati(GuwahatiOilRefineryIOCLtd.)andNarengi,andhasfacilitatedresidentialgrowthalongit.

    HighwayNH37,whichencirclesthecity'ssouthernpartsandlinksthesoutherncorridorinNoumiletothewesterncorridorinJalukbariiscurrentlysupportingrapiddevelopment.Similarly,theVIPRoadlinkingZooRoadwiththeeasterncorridorandrecentlycompletedHengerabariNarengiRoadarealsosupportingmassiveresidentialdevelopmenttotheeast.

    Thecityprovidesresidentialandworkingenvironmentswithbeautifullandscapes,pleasantclimate,modernshoppingareas,modernapartmentsandbungalows,andgoodsocialinfrastructure.Yetinfrastructureinthecitystillrequiresextensiveattention,toimprovethecity'sreputation,investmentenvironment,andoverallgrowthpattern.Majorinvestmentsininfrastructurearebeingplannedinthecity,coveringmanyaspectsoftheutilitiesandtransportationinfrastructures,withfinancialassistancefromtheAsianDevelopmentBank(ADB).GuwahatiistoalsoreceivesubstantialcitydevelopmentfundsfromJNNURM(JawaharlalNehruNationalUrbanRenewalMission)theGovernmentofIndia'srecentlyconceivedcommissionforurbandevelopment,andadevelopmentplanforthecityhasbeenfinalized.

    Guwahatiisverywellconnectedwithadjoiningregionsviabusservices.Threenodalpoints,Adabari,PaltanBazarandISBTGuwahati,providebusservicestotownsandcitiesinAssamandadjoiningstates.SomeoftheseservicesarerunbythegovernmentagencyASTC,andthemajorityofthemarerunbyprivatecompanies."Nightsupers",orbusesthatrunovernight,andluxurycoaches,areverypopular.

    TheInterStateBusTerminus(ISBT)locatedattheoutskirts,providesconnectivitywithotherregionsoftheNortheastwithregularbusesformajorcitiesandtouristdestinationsoftheneighbouringstates.

    CitizensfromMyanmarcancomeinthroughtheborderpostofTamuMorehandtakeaconnectingflightfromImphaltothecity.TherearealsoregularBusservicesfromImphaltothecity.Similarly,citizensfromBhutanandBangladeshcancomethroughborderpostsandtakethebusservicestothecity.

    Waterways

    Guwahati,beingonthebankofBrahmaputraRiver,isconnectedtoNationalWaterwaysNo2,withaterminalatPandu.Itisusedformovementofbulk&generalcargo,passengervesselsandtouristvessels.SeveralpassengerferryservicesarealsooperatedbythestateInlandWaterTransportdepartmentfortransportationofpassengersacrosstheriverBrahmaputra.

    Localtransport

    Lackofsufficientroadspaceisamajorproblem.Thelengthofsurfacedroadwithinthecityispresentlyat218km(ARSAC).Themajorcorridorroadssufferfrominsufficientrightofway,illegalconstructionmethods,andimproperplanninganddesign.Theroadsintheresidentialneighborhoodsareextremelynarrowcausingproblemsrelatedtobothtrafficandinfrastructureinstallations.Culdesacsareneitherplannednordesignedproperly.

    Guwahatihasagoodpublictransitsystem.ThegovernmentagencyAssamStateTransportCorporation(ASTC)andmanyprivateoperatorsprovideagoodcitybussystem.Itrequiresfurthermodernizationandintegrationwithcityplanningandmanagementinitiatives.GuwahatiisthefirstcityintheNortheastwherelowflooredbuseswereintroduced.

    Ametrorailprojecthasalsobeenplannedtorelievethechaotictrafficconditionsonthestreets.[26][27]

    Apartfromcitybuses,trekkerservices,whicharesofttopmultiutilityvehicleswithasittingcapacityof1012,providepublictransportfacilitiesalongmajorroadsinthecity.Theyarepopularforfasttravel,althoughthesevehiclesareusuallyoverloadedwithpassengersandtendtogoveryfastcausingfrequentaccidents.Rickshawsarealsoavailablefromallmajorplacesandservesonlyaroundthecityorsometimesbetweenlocalities.
