Readers are encouraged to spot the Baby in the Norfolk Cleaning Co.advert on the Front Page, who is also watching the Carnival Parade on Page 13 photo: Alex & Alex.If you fancy your little one to be on our front page, do send us a photo and suggest words for the bubble and you’ll not only get a woolie hat but they will also clean your oven for free.Every time Cromer Carnival comes along, I always end up with more photos than I can find space for. There may not have been as many floats in this year’s parade, but the turn out of people for the carnival and the parade was as great as it has been for a number of years.I am always surprised and indeed very impressed at how well the traffic in and around Cromer is controlled during the Parade, by the many volunteers & a private company organising it so well. Because of getting copy off to the printers on time and finding the space means that my photos of the Fancy Dress Dance will be in our next issue out on September 13th.On behalf of our many readers, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Shipp MBE and the 250 plus others involved in pulling off another enjoyable and fun Cromer Carnival. Thank You. Having published an article in issue 017 about the North Lodge Park

Tea Rooms, the lovely Debbie Williamson-Smith mentioned to me, while she was selling tickets at a recent Mundesley Film night that she had also run the same tearooms (See Page 8)I always enjoy doing such follow up articles from readers who have noticed something in the paper. Maybe it is simply a case of pushing one’s ego. I will leave to the readers to decide on.

From The Editor

Dear Philip,Further to the saga of the flower beds on Mundesley sea-front:-The “wild” flower seeds which took such a long time to germinate are now out in flower and they are certainly looking very pretty and are attracting the bees. However, I still maintain that our sea-front gardens should be planted up with recognized

Dear Editor,When we go to post our letters, parcels or even open a new account at the Post Office, we should expect to be dealt with by fully trained and dedicated Post Office staff. Yet we are now finding that the government is allowing businesses to operate Post Offices with shop staff who have very little training. No disrespect to the workers, but doing the post is quite different to selling a can of beans. This downgrading of workers to do more qualified work on the cheap is going on far too often, and devaluing our services.Even when workers take the time to get more qualified they are only rewarded with a few pence more an hour.Is this the way our postal services will be going with the privatisation of the Royal Mail? It’s a bleak vision of the future if so.Recently MP Norman Lamb, who helped over-see the proposals for selling the company off last year, commented that the Post Office & Royal Mail has benefited from a surge in online shopping. It seems more likely that those millions of pounds in profits has come from the government fattening up the company before its sale through increased prices. I expect those prices to rise even higher after their privatisation plans go through.Yours SincerelyDavid SpencerSouthrepps

Dear Philip,A Big thank you, for your write up and photo for the NCI Runton lookout in issue 018.Many thanks for your time in visiting us and for the editorial piece. It was very much appreciated by all the Runton crew. All the bestIan Arnold & the team

Dear Editor,We spend our holidays in Cromer year after year and we love the place. But, what has happened to the Council gardeners? The approach into Cromer on the Norwich Road at the top of the hill used to be attractive. Not any more. The plants look very overgrown and not the thing to inpress the many holiday makers that visit your town, like me, every year.Another cut-back I suppose.R.Holmes

bedding plants, after all they are supposed to be formal gardens.I quote from a letter I received from Nick Baker (Corporate Director at NNDC) “Looking forward, we clearly need to review our future planting scheme in Mundesley and please be reassured that we will seek the views of the Parish Council before we reach any conclusion”Kind regardsJanet MunroMundesley-On-Sea.

Dear Philip,I am writing to inform you of a fine that we received at Lidl’s for overstaying our parking by 11mins for £90! Also to warn your readers that there is only a 11/2 hr. parking limit. We did a big shop at Lidl’s which was very busy and then decided to have a Subway lunch as we were there, again we had to wait to be served as there was a large family in front of us.Morrison’s has a 3hour parking limit which encourages you to shop and have a meal.As you can guess we will not be using eitherLidl’s or Subway again as the fine made our shopping very expensive.Be warned Shoppers.Sincerely,Anne Turrell,Woodlands Holiday Park, Trimingham

Dear EditorSarah Watkins commented in the last issue about my “extraordinary response to an innocent swimmer!” Madam, this swimmer has NEVER been innocent and is indeed extraordinary. I now sadly report that I have since spotted this same mystery swimmer not in the sea, fully clothed as suggested, wearing shorts and a rather gaudy Hawaiian shirt. However this time only the shorts were soaked and dripping, leading me assume that, as a gentleman of a certain age, he may have been away from the facilities too long.Nigel HolmesMundesley

Dear Editor,I wonder, after seeing in issue 017 your picture on page 12, of a Jack Russell on the doctors steps, if it could possibly be my dog.

Would it be at all possible to see a larger copy of this picture to prove one way or the other, the collar will define him.I do hope you can help an avid reader. With thanks Mrs NealeFrom Editor: I hope this picture will be large enough for you to identify your dog!

Dear Editor,Knapton’s major fundraising fortnight was very successful, starting the ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign prior to a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to preserve the ‘Angels of Knapton’ for future generations.St Peter & St Paul’s Church in Knapton has a magnificent Medieval Double Hammer Beamed Angel Roof, constructed 1503, which is unique in Europe. Legend has it that the timbers came from a shipwreck off the coast of Mundesley and that they had been destined for Ireland. The roof is one of the widest in the country, crossing about 12 meters in a single span, a remarkable feat. The beams and spandrels are richly carved with three tiers of angels with outspread wings.

At the ‘Raise the Roof’ fundraising activities at the end of July, the Church Tower was open and there were displays of historic photos & flowers & an exhibition by local artists. On Saturday, the Village Hall had a sale of crafts, bric-a-brac etc. and homes in the village held garage sales. That evening the ‘Raise the Roof’ Concert was held in the Church and we were entertained by the Knapton Belles, a group of local ladies (below) who love to sing.

The star attraction was ‘The Nigel King Band’. Nigel was joined by Martin and Stew on guitars and Geoff (who lives in Knapton) on drums. The church was alive with people singing & dancing to all the old favourites. Our plea at the commencement of the fortnight was: “Please do help us to ‘Raise the Roof’ for Knapton – you will find fun and friendship in our lovely village”! We delivered, and some. To date the total raised is over £2,270 to put towards our HERITAGE Lottery Bid of just over £200,000. We hope to succeed, as the money will repair the roof and tower. Additionally, the improved access and facilities such as toilets and kitchen will mean that the church can be used more and more for community events, benefitting everyone in the village and surrounding areas, and securing its future. Mundesley’s ...... and Cromer’s Debbie

(Pictured Below) In the late 1960’sthey took on the place that was then called the Blue Danube Cafe in North Lodge Park. The earlier photo Above was kindly supplied by Cromer Museum.

Together they converted this into a nursery school & small cafe, it had been empty for a number of years.Derek & Debbie also ran the Rocket House Cafe and shell shop on the front for a number of years.By all accounts Derek’s scones full of fresh cream & strawberries werewere very popular indeed with locals and visitors alike.Over a cup of lovely hot chocolatewith Lisa & Debbie we covered a great deal of the history that makes what is now the North Lodge Park Tearooms such a lovely place to relaxand enjoy a cuppa.

PK.

Having published an article in issue 017, about Lisa Bumfrey (Above Left) taking on and then running the North Lodge Park Tea Room, the lovely Debbie Williamson-Smith (On Right)mentioned to me, while she was selling tickets to Mundesley Cinema night, that she and her first husband had run both this wonderful place as well as the cafe and boating lakeon Cardagon Road, in Cromer.Born a Londoner, Debbie moved in the 1967 to live in Mundesley with her husband and set up a children’s nursery school firstly in Mundesley at 48 High Street. Pictured Below are 9 of the pupils in front of Debbie & Derek’s car in Mundesley.

This lot must now be 50 years old or more and hopefully still living locally. Nice to see two young men wearing ties. While still living in Mundesley, Debbie and Derek took on the Cromer Boating lake and built Andys Cafe on Cadogan Road.

A Wife Was..... .................making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the Salt! USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’ The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’

The husband calmly replied: ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’

Medical Treatment & Your Choices – Part 1By Carla Goodyear, Solicitor with Hayes & Storr

This article looks at what legal measures can be put in place so that you can give instructions in relation to your medical care after you have lost the mental or physical capacity to do so for yourself.Q: What are the ways of leaving instructions as to my medical care for future use?A: Under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 you could make an Advance Decision or a Lasting Power of Attorney: Health and Welfare.Q: What is an Advance Decision?A: This is a document which is a formal record of your refusal of certain specified treatments and can also detail circumstances in which you would not want treatment to be offered. You make it at a time when you have mental capacity, in anticipation of a future occasion when you do not have the mental capacity to make such decisions.Q: Is an Advance Decision legally binding?A: Yes, but the document must comply with certain formalities for it to be applicable to life-sustaining treatment:1. it must be in writing;2. it must be signed and witnessed; and3. it must include a statement confirming that you understand you may die as a result of your refusal. In addition, you must be over 18 years of age and have the relevant mental capacity to under-stand the effect of the Advance Decision.Q: When would it not be followed?A: The doctor might not follow an advance decision if:• you have done something to contradict the advance decision;• they think that new circumstances would have affected your decision; or• the advance decision isn’t clear about what should happen.

Q: What is a Lasting Power of Attorney: Health and Welfare?A: The Lasting Power of Attorney: Health and Welfare (“LPA”) is a legal document which appoints one or more “Attorneys”, people you trust, to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your personal welfare. This includes not only medical treatment but also, for example, where you live or what you eat. There is a specific section in the LPA where you can expressly authorise the attorneys to either consent or refuse life sustaining treatment for you.

Q: Who ultimately decides what treatment I receive?A: In the LPA, or by writing a separate letter, you can give your attorneys guidance as to how they make decisions and what factors they take into consideration. However, whilst your attorneys have to act in your best interests, and must take your guidance into consideration, it is still their decision, and not yours, as to what they think is in your best interests. In addition, they could actually be overruled by the doctor treating you.“This Questions & Answers page aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Over the last few months, the builders have now turned this building into a very user - friendly place, where Barbara Baggaley, the Parish Clerk (Below) will be there to help the village and it’s residents.

Opening hours are to be agreed in due course. As a Parish Councillor I have to say that it it looks very well set up and ready to do the business of running a village effectively in a village I refer to as:

The Magic That Is Mundesley PK

After a number of meetings of the Mundesley Parish Council, it was decided to re-locate our Parish Clerk into what used to be the Fire Station, on Mundesley’s Back Street.I can hear readers thinking already “So where may I ask is Back Street?”The answer is simple: It is the one way road, leading down to the main village car park, right next door to the public loos.It did not take Councillors very long to decide on the colour of the building, or who should be invited to officially open it on Tuesday September 3rd.William Cox MBE, as a former resident of Mundesley, and as a fireman in the village, will be cutting the ribbon on the day and his wife Hilary, the chair of the Norfolk County Council and also a former resident of the village will accompany him.

At a recent Parish Council meeting, the photo (Above) of the original building was given to the Parish Council by Janet Munro.

New To Mundesley Greenbuild 2013 Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th SeptemberAt Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer.Sat 10.30 - 5pm. Sun 10.30 - 4.30pmThis event attracts businesses and experts from all over Norfolk and further afield to the grounds of Felbrigg Hall, which will be packed full of sources of energy advice, the latest renewable technologies, money-saving ‘green’ products, environmentally-friendly innovations and techniques, and local produce. In this age of austerity, Greenbuild promises to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ for anyone looking to lead a low carbon, low cost lifestyle but is also a great day out for those wanting a fun-filled day packed with free entertainment for the kids and fantastic local food.Visit: www.northnorfolk.org/greenbuild for a list of exhibitors, farmers’ market stands, the talks & presentations, and children’s activities. Greenbuild is sponsored by Kier, contractor for waste & recycling collections, street cleansing, and grounds maintenance in North Norfolk.Entrance to the event, talks, demonstrations and children’s entertainment, is free of charge as is the Car Park. All cars will be eligible to collect three bags of compost for just £1 as they leave. The compost at Greenbuild is made from waste that Norfolk residents put in their brown garden bins and this sustainable waste is then composted at a site near Aylsham. Join the scheme & receive a 240 litre brown bin free of charge. Collection charges are £41.60 p.a.

(pro rata if you join part way through the year).

For further information on this scheme call: 0300 123 1163.

Save Money On Gas & Electricity BillsN. Norfolk District Council is offering residents a further opportunity to use ‘people power’ to save money on their gas and electricity bills through the Big Switch and Save scheme. The first round of the scheme was launched in North Norfolk in March this year, with 2796 households in the area registering. They achieved an overall average annual saving of £111 per household, with the highest average annual saving of £139 for ‘dual fuel’ customers opting for online billing. Nearly 12,000 households registered across the country as a whole, of which 71% were able to make a saving through switching. If you missed out on the first round or think you could make even more savings on your gas or electricity bills, there will be a second round of the Big Switch & Save scheme between 14th August and 15th October 2013.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said:“We all know that gas & electricity costs are soaring and energy switching is one way that individual households can reduce those costs. NNDC is delighted to be able to offer a second opportunity for people in N.Norfolk to register for the Big Switch & Save. Our experience in the first round of the scheme shows that it really can help many people cut their energy costs in these difficult times.”Residents can register by visiting:www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk. All you need is a bill or a statement from your energy supplier which includes the energy you used last year or your estimated usage for the year ahead. Registering is quick and easy and up to five households can be registered from a single email address so you can help family, friends and neighbours to register if they do not have their own internet access. A helpline is available on: 0800 0488 285.

A Routine Police... ....Patrol parked outside a bar in Tennessee but after last call, the officer noticed a man leaving the bar, so intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on & off - it was a fine, dry summer night - flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons’ vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all!Dumbfounded, the officer said:“I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken.”

“I doubt it,” said the truly proud Redneck.

“Tonight I’m the designated decoy.”Thanks to David Thorne for this

On Thursday 5th September ......at 5pm. Denise Burke will face her first test as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk when she attempts to impress three dinner guests on Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me and in doing so she will become the first person standing for parliament to appear on the show.

Denise (pictured above on Right) who was selected as North Norfolk Labour Party candidate in July, signed up for the programme at the start of the year and was filmed on the same week in February that she was helping the party contest a by-election in Cromer. She jokes that many in the Labour Party expected her to send out a political message by serving stuffed Lamb - a reference to her rival, Norman Lamb - but opted for a meal that has a flavour of the coast using local produce instead. As the contestants have not had a chance to see the programme yet, Denise isn’t sure what to expect but has told fellow Labour activists to plan for some surprises, particularly when her Labrador, Millie, appears as an unexpected guest to make the meal a dog’s dinner!

Come Dine With Me in North Norfolk has been scheduled to go out on Channel 4 on Thursday 5th September and will be repeated on 4Seven the following day (Friday 6th) at 10am, and will be available on the Channel 4 website following broadcast. Visit: www.norfolklabour.co.uk for details.Denise said:“I cannot wait to see the results of Come Dine With Me in North Norfolk when it goes out on Channel 4. I hope it will sell North Norfolk’s local produce to a wider audience, and show what we have to offer here. The programme was filmed during a freezing cold week in February, but it didn’t stop the camera crew wanting to film some of the beautiful parts of north Norfolk including Happsiburgh lighthouse and beach.

The producers were even keen to capture some of the Labour Party campaigning in Cromer. It was great fun, and it will certainly reveal a few surprises about North Norfolk Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate. We all appeared to get on well during the dinners but I still don’t know what was said about each other on camera after each meal!”
