Trunchs Winning ScarecrowDid you go off toTrunch on Sunday14th July?

    If Not why not?

With over 35Scarecrows tocase & admirethis wonderfulvillage was the

    place to be.

I was honouredwith the role of

    being this yearsScarecrow Judge.

With the help ofMatt Flippard, who turned out to be a relation of the onlyother Flippard I have ever met, we walkedaround the village to decide which wasthe best Scarecrow.

After over an hour of walking around, chatting to the Scarecrow creators andmany others walking round the trail,we decided that the wedding couple(above) were the winners.

Proudly produced by Lee and BernardSumser - Lapson, they were closelyfollowed up by Vaugham & KailBumfreys image of a thatchercutting reeds on the broads.

And the third place went to a monstertitled TRUNCHATAURUS.

This really is one of the best local eventsin the area throughout the summer, as thewhole village is involved in creating agreat day out for everyone.

Other than a couple of gardens, all thevillage gardens looked brilliant, withso many of the local people gettinginvolved to make this Sunday, aSunday to remember.

Along with at least 45 to 50 others, I tookmy classic VW car along to join a greatdisplay of both cars and tractors.

With tea, coffee, cakes & lunches onoffer in the Village Hall, it is wellworth pencilling into your socialdiary for next year.

From The EditorAt last some decent summer weather and at lastI am able to get into the North Sea looking atleast a million dollars for a refreshing swim.It is something I did every day, in the earlydays went we rst moved to Norfolk fromStamford in Lincolnshire. An example of my lean and keen body has beenkindly sent in from Nigel Holmes, who had hismobile phone with him while I took one of mynow regular dips in the sea off Mundesley.

Thank you Nigel for your photograph, butmore importantly thanks for your regularcartoon you have been contributing eachissue: MUN & Little Tankie on Page 18.

As Nigel is going to be writing two PantomineScripts and has a book to nish over the nextfew months, he will not have time to send usany cartoons for a while. I hope for not toolong Nigel as I always enjoy them.

    Thanks good Sir.

I also enjoyed going to the Circus this week inMundesley as it was such good fun. (Page 10).

The two memories that I have of going to thecircus as a child were:When my mother, my two brothers and I wentto pick apples in the afternoon to feed them to

a group of elephants outside the circus witha baby elephant getting in on the action andbeing able to get an apple as well.

The other elephant occasion was going to thecircus with a group of about 80 young boysand during the interval all lining up againsta fence for a wee. What a sight we werefor the rest of the audience.

I would like to thankAlex Hannah for histour Backstage on theCromer PierSee Page 8

I would denitelyrecommend takingone of these tripsaround the backstage with Alex.

I would also like todraw attention to thearticle about Lisa

Bumpfrey, with heradvert for her TeaRooms onPage 13. Lisas family in Cromerare a lovely bunch of jolly souls and I amsure that Lisa will make a great successof her business in North Lodge Park.

In just a matter of a few weeks now CromersCarnival will be with us all.

We have listed the Childrens Weeks that leadup to the main Carnival Week.See Page 18.

I will be out there with my camera taking goodand dreadful photos of everyone. Be assuredthat it is the dreadful pictures that getpublished, of course.

    Dear Philip and Lis,

The funds raised at the MundesleyChristmas Eve Pageant totallingapprox. 300 were shared betweenNorwich Cruse Bereavement &Hayleys Kidney Transplant Fund.

This had brought the total forHayleys Fund to 1,030.

Peter Button with his Pink HairSponsorship raised much of thisand the rest from the Ship Innand the Pageant.

Hayley has been back on one of herfrequent visits to hospital where hercondition has stabilised enough todelay the transplant for the fore-seeable future. Good news indeed.

We are handing the money over toher dad, Chris as they are planninga mini celebration in Euro Disneythis September.

Hayley is pleased and very, verygrateful. She is now planning onraising funds herself for a charity(to be decided) but possibly forother Kidney Patients like herselfsometime in the late Autumn.

As to the Pageant - traditionally heldon Christmas Eve to remind peopleof the real reason we celebrate atChristmas - it looks very much asif there will not be one for 2013.It seems odd to be thinking about

Christmas in this lovely weather, but if the Pageant is to happenplans need to be in place soon.

The Parish Council, who asked forthe Pageant to be restarted after theoriginals of 1995 & 1996, ve yearsago have had no success in ndinga new Director.

Jo is stepping down this time as shewants to visit her grandsonand family in Japan. The Parish council have also beenasked if they could nd a suitablehome for the costumes etc. and itwould be a pity to lose them afterso much effort and they would beavailable for another year.

If anyone or a group of people areinterested in either taking on thePageant or more urgently helpingto nd costume space as The ShipInn, who has kindly looked afterthem for the past year now needsthe space please contact Jo Berry

    on: 01263 720 743 or by e-mail:

    [email protected] thanks,

Jo Berry on behalf of the formerMundesley Christmas EvePageant Committee

Hi PhilipOn behalf of Trunch Open GardensCommittee, I would like to say a hugethank you for coming last Sundayto judge the scarecrows.

We had a fabulous turnout on theday and it is looking like we madeover 3000 to go towards TrunchVillage Projects.

We don`t have the full nal gureas yet as we are still waiting forsome odd bits to come in.

Dear Crab TalesMy wife and I were strolling along Mundesleybeach just before sunset when we witnessedwhat I can only explain as a Reggie Perrinmoment.

A gentleman came down onto the beach andproceeded to remove his clothing.

He left them in a pile on the sand and wadedinto the sea, going for full immersion.

I did manage to take a quick photograph andwould request your readers to report back ifthey have seen this man.

He may have come from The Home for theBewildered and I think someoneshould let them know.

Dear Editor,I am researching the artist Walter Starmer(1877 - 1961) who lived in Mundesleyfrom around 1900 until 1914.

He painted many local views and it is possiblesome of them survive in the area. He exhibitedin both Mundesley and Cromer.

More particularly I am trying to identify the houseand studio where he lived which at the timewas called Breeze Mount or Breezemount.

Walter lived with his sister Edith Starmerwho was also an artist.

Any information would be gratefully received.Alan Walker

Dear Philip,I fully agree with your Trimingham correspondent(Issue 016) - there is nothing nicer to look thana bank or meadow of wild owers, howeverThe Green on Mundesley sea-front is neithera bank or a meadow and I had no idea North

Norfolk District Council intended it to be such.

    Kind Regards

    Janet MunroMundesley-On-Sea

Dear Mr Keddell,Its good to see you back in charge of CrabTales (previously The Crab Line).

With the Carnival on the way, here is a poemabout last years event.

    All the best,

    Mr Len Saculla

Memories of Cromer Carnivalby Len Saculla

Im a big fan of Cromer Carnival,

The Red Arrows and the marquee bars

But my favourite is the sunny Sunday

When they display the Classic cars.

    As Tony Shipp announces,

Can the glamorous grannies come to the arena?

Ill be looking at a Buick Eight

Or a dear old Ford Cortina.

When I pick myself a favourite

Its an American car that wins

Something space age from the rock and roll years,

With lots of chrome and ns.So when the cars are parked on the eld

    I know Carnival has arrived.

I could stand and dream of owning them all

    Except I cannot drive!

30 to compete on the 2nd day. Ill plan for thatas soon as my summer rush is over!

Cat began face painting as an Education Ofcerat Banham Zoo & Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

She was UK Pro Face Painter of the Year 2007& 08, 5th in World Awards and winner of thePhizzog Phestival 2011, Body Factory 2012.

Her work has been published in industrymagazines and books.

She was the lead Face Painter / sole body Artistfor the Hong Kong Rugby 7s and own toShanghai to represent the UK in Chinasrst body paint event.

Cat paints and teaches in Norfolk and is oftenseen at local events, especially Bewilderwood.

Cat Finlayson.............from Knapton, has won 1st Place in theexciting Art Couture Body Paint Awards heldin Painswick, Gloucestershire.

The event draws students, designers and artistsfrom around the country and competitors createwearable art to be judged on a catwalk in frontof a packed audience of visitors and celebrities.

This year body paint designs had to be Magic.Model Laurence Caird, pictured above withCat, asked to be steam-punk.

Researching Magic I found that its goldenage of creativity was the early Victorian periodwhen it began in theatres, and many tricks weknow today were invented. Magicians builtincredibly sophisticated automatons; onedrew 200 celebrities portraits.

Cat created her imaginings of the inner workings& outer clothing of a Victorian robot on Laurencesfront, using brush & sponge. His back displayscountryside mysticism using the heavens andnature changing to shows where new-fangledmechanics & electricity confounded audiences.

Cat made his hat by cutting up an old yogamat and painting it to look like ironwork.

A Tour WellWorth TakingOn Saturday July 20th I took part in oneof the rst tours of the Cromer Pier.

The tour started at 10am and ran for just shortof an hour. It was conducted by Alex Hannahwho works for the Pier, operating all thelighting and sounds that makes the PierShow, a show worth watching.

Alex kicked off by giving us a brief history of

the famous Cromer Pier, while explaining howeverything worked, before taking us on to thestage and then backstage.

I was pleased to see that our former lodger, thelovely Jessica Bedford, had put her name onpart of the ceiling alongside numerous otherswho have spent their summers working forOpenwide. A delightful example of thePiers colourful history.

I was impressed by how all the stage sets areoperated from back stage and how everythingis changed over in a couple of hours betweenShow One and Show Two every week.

I had never realised before that there is so verylittle room back stage to pull of any show, butit all works well every time, thanks to the team

in the front of house and back stage. These excellent tours are held every Saturdayat 10am, 10.45am & 11.30am. They cost 2per person or free if you are a loyalty cardholder or have purchased a ticket to the2013 Seaside Special.

All the money which is raised from the tourswill go to the heart debrillator fund forCromer Pier.

Alex has indeed spent many years working onthe Pier, even longer than Openwide have beeninvolved in operating the Pier Shows and thisexperience enables him to give a great accountof how the shows operate.

Cat does not paint nudes and models all wearknickers at least. Most donate themselves inreturn for the experience and the photographs.

Body decoration is an ancient art, but recently ithas become more professional. Cat is proudlyincluded amongst the UKs top painters.

CouncillorsDoing Their......Bit For Mundesley. After a number of letters being sent tolocal papers including the Crab Talescommenting on the state of the gardensaround the Coastwatch cum MundesleyMuseum, the Parish Council decidedto re-plant the area surrounding theMemorial to those who lost theirlives clearing up the land mineson the beach.

    Pictured On Right L-R :

District Cllr Barry Smith, whose wifeDorothy, also a Parish Councillor forMundesley, put forward the idea ofre-planting these gardens, and

Our Information Point is now completed andwas ofcially launched by Norman LambMP last Saturday, watched by interestedvillagers and curious visitors.

Mr.Lamb was welcomed by the Chairman ofthe Council, who thanked everyone who hadworked so hard to bring the project to fruition,in particular Bruce Stratton, Di Rolph, DerekPaul, Gary Bumphrey and Joan Mapperley.

Every year since 2009 a marquee is placed onGold Park and the Circus Ferrel turns up toentertain and amuse any and everyoneprepared to shell out 6.00 each.

Like any good modern circus these days, thereare no animals involved, however the performersare a delight to watch and would be enjoyed

by everyone who turned up, however oldor young they may be.

Above on the left is Martin Taylor and on theright is Lynette Taylor, who runs the show intheir beautiful tent in Gold Park.

I strolled along with Brenda and Nigel Holmeswho are great fans of this circus, Nigel has onoccasions stood in as the ring-master whileLynette has been away on family matters.

(Pictured on Right)Brenda, Martin & Nigel

As it was their Opening night, one somehowrather expected there to be a few mistakes

made by the cast. Not a bit of it.After a great introduction at the start of the

performance, it all fell into place brilliantlyand the atomosphere was great fun andaction packed.

Not only did the children enjoy this show buttheir parents and grandparents loved it also.

The little girl infront of us reallyenjoyed everymoment of theshow with hergrandfather.

Great backgroundmusic livened upthe show beforeTom (in cowboyhat) did his greatroutine with hiswheel and Matt(in the Red Shirt)

juggled up to eightballs all at onceright up to theroof of thelarge tent.

Everyone I spoketo, while enjoyingthe candy oss Itreated myself to

during the interval and after the show, reallyenjoyed the evening of great fun and sucha refreshing experience of a real circus.

The Circus is open until the 8th August withperformances on the 1st August at 2pm,4th at 2pm, 5th at 5pm, 6th at 2pm 7that both 2and 5pm and the 8th at 2pm.For more information visit their website:www.circusferrel.com

Dear Philip,Re Missing pound! There is no missing pound.

    Ask two questions

    Q1 How much money was there? A = 30

Q2 How much money is there now and thisRestaurant Owner has 25.00, each of

    the diners has 1, the waiter has 2.25 + 3 + 2 = 30.

A pilfering waiter and clever use of wordsto confuse!.

The last statement should have read the3 diners each paid 9 and they still havea pound each, the restaurant owner onlyhas 25 as his pilfering waiter stole 2.

    Regards

    Steve Harber

    Dear Philip,Simple Sum : 10+10+10= 30The restaurant charged 25 leaving 5The waiter took 2 leaving 3

    Therefore 30-3=27 or 9x3

There is no missing pound as the nal

calculation in the letter is wrong3x9=27 the waiter TOOK 2 which means27-2=25 and not gave 2 which wouldequal 29 - the alleged answer.

Hope thats simplied it enough for you.

    Regards

    Nigel Robinson

Dear Philip,The teaser is based on a false premise, i e thatthe meal cost 30.

It didnt - it only cost 25, as evidenced bythe fact that the cashier, on receiving 30,returned 5.

Because the diners each got 1 back from

their 10 they believe the combined costof the snacks was 27 (9x3= 27).

So in fact they have actually paid 2 morethan the amount the cashier received.

That 2 has ended up in the waiters pocket.

    Regards

    Robert Miller

Hi Philip,Your brain teaser had me confused for a while,but..the answer is in the fact that it is added upincorrectly, the key to it is in the 2 that thewaiter has.

    It should be subtracted rst, then added to the3 the diners have, so: 3 X 9 = 27 minus 2= 25 now take that 2 add it to the 3 = 5 +25 = 30

    Regards Russell Sparkes

Ps I couldnt do it but I knew a man who could!

Dear Philip,In response to your request for a solutionto the Brain Teaser that I sent you.

It is in the way in which the question is posed.

I don`t believe there is an answer, although logictells you there ought to be one and hence youcan spend a long time trying to puzzle it out.

In reality the restaurant owner has 25, thewaiter 2 and the three men 1 each.

If you could issue a challenge to the Crabtalescommunity to come up with their answers, itcould prove interesting.

    Regards

    Peter Ellis

Dear Philip,The diners each get 1 back, so have paid 9each, a total of 27 for their meals.

This is 2 more than the required 25.The 2 is in the waiters pocket.

The cashier gets 25 for the meals, the diners get 1 back each and thewaiter gets 2. 25+3+2 =30.

What Do Think?Having been told by a couple of local people

that the access to Cromers East Beach wasin a poor state, I went down to have a lookmyself with my camera in hand.

I must say that the bushes could easily be cutback on both sides of the path better knownas theDoctors Steps.

A job of less than 30 minutes, would surely beenough to ensure that visitors and locals wouldnot be putting their hands on the thorns insteadof the hand rails.

I imagine it is the responsibility of the NNDCto cut these thorns back on a regular basis.

After a long and sunny day on the beach, thelast thing you want is to cut your hands onthorns, while walking home.

What do you think on this matter?PK

the property as aninvestment, or didnot predominate ...over that of holdingproperty as aninvestment.

    It now seems that

the key to obtain-ing BPR (or not)is what additionalservices are provid-ed over and abovethe basic letting.

The more intrusivethe landlord is the better.

The provision of homemade cakes & jam could bethe key to obtaining this very valuable tax relief.

A ghting fund is being organised to appeal.

    It is felt that this was a case that HM Revenuechose carefully because the owner was very muchabsent in the letting of the property and theholidaymakers were left to their own devices;

Inheritance TaxReliefOn HolidayCottages? Are Homemade Cakes The Secret

To Tax Relief?By Miranda MarshallPartner at Hayes + Storr

The case of Pawson involved a holiday cottageon the Suffolk coast at Thorpeness. It revolvedaround whether holiday-lets are a business forthe purposes of obtaining Business PropertyRelief (BPR) for Inheritance Tax purposes.

In order to be eligible for BPR on a business itmust be a trading business and not one whollyor mainly of holding an investment.

In Pawson the holiday-let in question was a largebungalow for up to 11 people with a half-acreof garden. Services included cleaning, heatingand some caretaking.

The holidaymakers had to bring their own sheets& towels. The owners only visited the propertyin an emergency and there was no welcomepack or personal attention for holidaymakersduring their stay.

At the First Tier Tribunal it was decided thatBPR was available as the input required intoa holiday letting was far too active an operationfor it to be viewed as an investment. Theprovision of services was mentioned.

This decision was reversed on Appeal to the Courtso that the BPR was not available for a numberof reasons which essentially boiled down to thefact that the provision of additional servicesor facilities of a non-investment nature was

either incidental to the business of holding

    for current Weather & TidesInformation

If someone you love experiences a chronic paincondition, it is so easy to become overwhelmedwith information on the internet etc such as

this can cure anythingstatements.Be assured, a lot of professionals in the medicaleld do not understand chronic pain conditionsand admit to it. It is easy to become overwhelmedby their condition and how to deal with it.

What you need to remember most is: a person ismore than their diagnosis. While the person youlove lifes circumstances may have changed, thefundamental core of this person has not changed.

They may have been a crazy snowboarder, t,active and then their whole world shatteredaround them. They feel bad enough aboutthemselves as it is and this is why theyneed to share your love, laughter, andcompassion more than ever. Why?

To be fair, anyone can be tired and anyone can

experience pain. The world seems to demandattention at all times. However, chronic paintiredness is something else...the exhaustionis psychological, physical, emotional andspiritual and can be akin to carrying arounda lead safe lled with more lead.

So to say you havent done this, that or the other, you used to be able to, or why dont youishardly conducive to them feeling goodabout themselves.

Imagine having u like symptoms...those acheswhich wont go away, you may feel miserable, tired, not able to get out of bed and enjoy thethings you love doing...now imagine that eachday of your life or every moment of your life.

Sometimes even a touch is painful. The pain is

real. They may feel abandoned by the medicalprofession, their friends and their family....months of seeing doctors, consultants,

Kindness, Compassion& Chronic Pain specialists, trials on different medications, advice

from everyone and anyone is exhausting.

Pain can cause brain fog (neurological, chemical imbalance or their medication)

..so you may be subjected to I cant ndmy keys, where is my wallet.

Be patient - show some compassion - theydont want to be in this state and it can befrightening and bewildering at times.

They may experience mood changes - thiscan also be neurological/chemical but alsoenvironmental in that they may want to work, volunteer, go for a walk...and then, almostimmediately, cannot.

    Frustrating, huh?

You may think, hey, this is a one way street here....why should I do all the love and compassionstuff...what about me?

Well, the strange thing about love & compassion

is that it reects, comes back to you, bouncesaround, absorbs, re-wires the brain and is,probably, one of the best drugs available.

Yes, you may feel angry, frustrated, lost, fedup with the person who has the chronic paincondition and these are natural andunderstandable feelings.

However, take a step back once in a whileto consider these two statements by theDalai Lama:

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.

    and

If you want others to be happy, practicecompassion. If you want to be happy,

    practice compassion.

    Thanks to Bee for this.

    Well DoneCrossways

    L-R:Anna & Dave Jackson

It is jolly good news for Crossways tobacconists,in Cromers Chapel Street, as they have beenawarded the Tobacco Retailer Of The Yearby the Pipe Maker livery company Trophy.

This shop is one of very few left in this countryand has been around for a very long time in thesame location.

Since Dave took over the business back inDecember 2011, the place has been tidiedup with new carpet on the oor etc etc.

Whether you are a smoker or not, it is wellworth having a quick look in the doorway.

    Well done Dave & Anna.

    FITTED BY

    ENGINEERS

After A Long.............night of making love, the guy noticesa photo of another man, on the womansnightstand by the bed.

    He begins to worry.

Is this your husband?he nervously asks.

No, silly, she replies, snuggling up to him.Your boyfriend, then?he continues.

No, not at all,she says, nibbling at his ear.Is it your dad or your brother?he inquires, hoping to be reassured.

No, no! You are so hot when youre jealous!she answers.

Well, who in the hell is he, then?he demands.

    She whispers in his ear:

    Thats me before the surgery.
