Welcome To The United StatesOf AmericaOn Christmas Day, Lis & I ewfrom Heathrow to New York tospend our annual holiday in thecrossing America by train.

We hadjust a couple of weeks totake in as much of it as we could.

Like most ights these days itwas packed full of jolly soulsall watching the latest lmsor sleeping / eating as bestthey all could.

Wehave always loved the BigApple, ever since our rst tripthanks to the Hoover offer.

This time we stayed in a hoteljust offBroadway, very much in the middleof everything that was going on insuch a wonderfully alive city.

Other than a few days of R & R inNew York, we took a 2 day hop on/hop off bus tour of the city, takingin Central Park (above) through theBronx, downtown Mannhattan and

China Town. The city was bustlingwith people all laden with bags ofbargains from the Winter Sales.

New York is one of those places thateveryone should experience at leastonce in a lifetime.

After 2 glorious weeks in the US,it was nice to be home but I wouldhave preferred to be in good healthand not suffering from a depressingchest infection.

Now I am back on the road again, ready to face the world and what-ever it tries to throw at me.

The highpoint of our trip must havebeen the visit to the Grand Canyon.

Not only is it massive, but is trulyimpressive whatever direction youlook at it from and well worth thetime visiting.See Page Six.

Despite the images of the snow inNew York, before we left, it wasa lovely day to be doing an OpenTop bus tour when we were there.

The weather was perfect everywherewe went, apart from the few hourswe spent in Chicago.

Iwould like to thank Jo Berry verymuch for her account of her trip toJapan over Christmas & New year.See Page 4, I do envy her as it isone of those must see places that

we have yet to get to.Iwould also to wish Holly Farnellall the very best for her MountainGorilla trek.See Page 11. I havealways been a great believer intravel broadening the mind.

Likewise, thanks to Micky Petersfor his account of the goings on atthe Sheringham Station all veryinformative and interesting.See Page 7.

As always, many thanks to PaulDamen, this time for his report

and photographs of the Sea SurgeDebrief meeting onPage 8.

Dear Editor,It seems staggering that Januarys cabinetmeeting at the North Norfolk DistrictCouncil has been cancelled due to alack of business.

Individuals in the Tory administrationhave privately said much of the keydecision making at the council goes

on in these meetings, so Im surprisedthey have found nothing to talk aboutat such an important time.

    Dear Editor,

In reply to the letter in the last issue of CrabTalesfrom Mr.A.Bailey (itself a response toone from Rupert Read), I think Mr.Baileyhas missed a crucial point.

Given that we are one of the greediest nationson earth (by a measurement of average personalconsumption), surely the most urgent needis for more promotion of energy savingmethods (of which insulation is one).

    Possible long-term methods are

very long-term.Each of us could make a personal decision inthe short-term to conserve resources for thereto be any chance of a long-term future.

    J.Wheatley

Dear Philip,Could I ask your readers to save their postagestamps which I send on to various charitiesto raise vital funds. Thank You

    Yours Sincerely

Whats worse is that the administrationexplained on Twitter that the decisionwas made in the middle of December -seemingly days after the oods hit thecoastal areas of our district.

What sort of message does this send out to thecommunitieswanting more action on ooddefences from both council and the government?

The council will also shortly decide where theaxe will fall for the next round of budget savings- which includes negotiations over our towns

CCTV systems - these meetings should be usedto give the public an opportunity to have theirsay before the nal decisions are taken.

There is no word on whether allowanceswill be deducted for the reported shortageof business to deal with.

they all get delivered at once wrappedin an elastic band!!

The day is as any other but a few shopsare closed and we had traditionalNew Years Day food Japanesestyle - O-ishi (delicious).

That evening theres a traditional televisionprogramme. Its a competition boys versusgirlseach year various bands and artistesare invited to perform.

The costumes and sets are stunning.

It runs until 11.45pm when it all goes quietandthe programme shows people visitingthe Temples and Shrines and at Midnighta priest sounds a huge bell with a largewooden cylinder to welcome theNew Year.

How civilised and sensible a way to markthe mid winter season!

Of course we visited the local shrine alongwith several Hundred other locals to throwsmall change into the coffers, bow twice, clap twice (to wake the gods who didntget much sleep at New Year) bow twiceand go home.

Oh, and all Japanese children get money for

the New year. Ewan did rather well this time!Im very glad Ive done this -an amazing experience.

    Thanks Damian, Chikako and Ewan.

Thanks to Jo Berry for this article.

sit in 43C spring water, get warm get out andre-don yukata and go for the evening meal!

The next day (you could go for more hotbaths if you wished!) we went 3000 feetup this volcano - cable cars and walkingto buy and eat black shelled eggs.

The air was very sulphurous and the eggs arelowered into 80C vocano water to cook foran hour (the minerals turn the shells black).

Quite an experience eating a hard boiledegg up the side of a steaming volcano!

Apparently you add 7 years to your life for

each egg you - if the climb or descentdoesnt get you rst!!

We then had a boat ride on a pirate ship- of course what else!!

New Years Day - all the New Year cards toare sent are brought by the postman duringthe day - the Post ofce collect them so

Christmas & NewYear in JapanIwould probably never have visited Japan outof choice but as Damian, my son, decided toget a job and live & work there about 21 yearsago I found that really there wasnt anyoption but to visit.

I have own to Tokyo several times andeach time I learn more about the peopleand the culture.

Japan in the Spring with the stunning Cherryblossom, Autumn with the breathtakingchanging leaves are both very enjoyableas the temperature is comfortable.

The Summers are too hot and humid for me -getting out of a shower wetter than goingin and the incessant cicadas whirring allnight are great as an experiencebut I wouldnt do it again.

This last year the Grannie in me wanted to seethe family again and I opted for the Christmasand New Year trip to say Id done it!

John and I booked our seats as early aspossible as the New Year is the time forJapanese families to celebrate together.

And planes ll up quickly. We think weve bought the plane - the tripsout and in on the newly tted 747- 400 withthe real lie down beds were comfortableand the food delicious!

Damian with his wife Chikako and GrandsonEwan met us at Narita and we then had a halfhour train ride to Hatsutomi where they live.

We soon settled to the Japanese style of shoesoff slippers on, sleeping on futons (on theoor - why is it getting further away?)

Getting the futons and bedding away in thecupboards in the morning and getting it allout again in the evening.

Opening the shutters in the morningand closing them at night.Showering in the morning and showering inthe evening after which you sit in 42 C bath, get nice and warm and go to bed!

Theres no central heating and it was cold!

The Japanese toilets are something else -you have a separate pair of slippers towear in the loo!

Chikako is an excellent cook and we weretreated to wonderful meals & Lunch boxesof sushi & traditional Japanese food whichwe bought to help save on the cooking.

On Christmas day we exchanged a fewpresents - as the Japanese dont do

Christmas the presents are tokensof the Traditions back home.

We had roast Chicken and Christmas pudding(John being allergic to meat had an omelette)and then we went shopping!!It was brilliant!

All the shops are open as it is a normal day.

Yes there were Christmas decorations butnot in your faceand those came down onChristmas eve and up went the New Yeardecorations.

Damian and Chikako treated us to a nightaway at a Hot Spring Hotel near Hakone.

Hot springs water heated by volcanoes arebelieved to be very benecial to health soyou check in after an amazing train ridezigzagging up the mountain, explore thearea about 2,000 + feet above sea leveland return to your room.

Collect your (supplied)dressing gown (yukata)and wander off to the communal baths boyin one - girls in the other, Shower and then

    Traditional New Years day food

Sailing on lake Ashi on a Pirate Boat!

Going for dinner in your dressing gown!

A long climb up the volcano to buyblack shelled eggs

Continued From Front PageOn December 28th at 8am, we checked inat Penn Station to board the rst of severaltrains to cross the USA.

First stop was Washington where we spent afew hours doing an open top bus tour, whichwas great as the tour guide was bright andjolly, the weather was perfect and it was avery relaxing way to see Washington.

Above:The White House (in the background)

After visiting the Post Ofce Museum, wewent back to the Station, where we enjoyeda delicious lunch at the Sushi Bar.

We then boarded the train for Chicago, a tripof about 18 hours, arriving there, at 9am.

With a cold wintery day of some 3degrees topsand raining, it was not the kind of day to spendany time walking around, as we had been therebefore for a few days. So after spending severalhours over breakfast & lunch, we boarded theAmtrak train heading to Williams in Arizona.

I must admit that the mistake I made was notbooking a sleeper on the train, as despite theseats being comfortable, it would have beenmuch more enjoyable to pay the extra andget a sleeper like my mum and I did a fewyears ago, when she paid for it!

After just over a day, we arrived at Williams,at around 10pm, where we checked into ourmotel on Route 66, for a comfortable nightssleep & after a healthy breakfast on the way tothe station we were up and ready to face a dayof seeing the Grand Canyon by train.

As we were leaving everyone from the stationcame out to wave us good bye and once we hadall settled into our carriage, our lovely Hostess,Amber Rose, introduced herself and then spentthe rest of the day keeping us entertained withloads of information about the Canyon andtelling loads of wonderfully dreadful jokes.

One could not ask for a better lady to undertakethis role and the whole operation was very wellorganised and appreciated by everyone on board.

Amber Rose (above) was quite simply delightfullyfriendly and helpful, all day long, as well beinginformative and jolly and taking an interest ineveryone on board, she told us that she lovesher job and it certainly showed.

In fact everyone we met who were involved inthis trip was extremely friendly and helpful.

I always knew it was large, but never dreamtjust how large and impressive it all was.It really isA Must Seebit of the USA.

Lis and I on the Grand Canyon train.

With such a delightful hostess on the train, boththere and back, as well as gun toting cowboys(Below) climbing onto the train on the return

journey, hotly pursued by the Sheriff, I canreally recommend this trip to everyone as itwas so well organised and great fun.

After re-boarding our train for LA, at just after10pm that evening, we nally arrived at ourdestination 9am the next morning. A total of

over 60 hours was spent on the various trainsfrom New York.

After picking up our rental car and nding ourwonderfulLA Adventurer hotel/ motel,Belowwe spent the rst day sleeping and recoveringfrom our long journey across America. After several swims in their heated pool as wellas our free glasses of good bubbly, we were

both starting to recover in this amazing motel.

There were so many freebies that we didnt getto sample them all. Free Tea/coffee all day long,a free glass each of champagne each evening, afree light buffet afterwards, mostly chips or ricea free piece of homemade cake at 8.30pm, freecookies at 3.30pm& free popcorn all day plusall the usual amenities. I would recommendthis place to everyone travelling that way.

There is sometime about LA that I always like, because it is such an open and friendly placeto visit and the climate is wonderful.

Other than going in the wrong direction for fartoo many miles trying tond the Queen Maryfor almost a whole day, we enjoyed the nextday very much with Liss former son in lawand new girlfriend in Hollywood

After 6 days in LA, we at last found theQueen Mary, right were it should be.

I.E. no one had moved it anywhere.

Lis was very relieved as she had always wantedto see it because her mother had travelled on itwith her sister just before WW2.

After a very early morning ight from LAXto NY and then eventually on to Heathrowairport, we were both completely burnt outfrom only a couple of weeks holiday.

    Just a smallsample of the

    delightful periodfeatures which

    we enjoyed whilewalking around

    the decks ofThe Queen Mary.

Finding her way unceremoniously toWoodham Bros scrap yard at Barryin South Wales, she languished there, with many other steam locos, for14 years and 4 months - longerthan she had spent inoperational service.

Steam Loco 76084.......makes another Saturday lunchtimedeparture from Sheringham station...

This time, however, the scheduled destinationisa little further away than Holt as shes on herway to East Lancs for a couple of months beforereturning to the North Norfolk Railwayfor the 2014 season.

This is where BR Standard Class 4 MT re-entered public passenger hauling duties, onSunday 21st July last year - almost 46 yearsafter being withdrawn by British Railways -heading the 13.30 departure from Holt.

76084 rst saw the light of day when out-shopped from Horwich locomotive workson 28/3/57 but withdrawn, less than11 years later, on 2/12/67.

Would we recommend this trip to anyone?

    Yes, we would.

For further information, I would suggest that youphone me, or go online to look at the train trip.

The website is simply man in seat 61where youcan access all the details of trips all over theworld, if needs be, but make sure you book acabin, not just seats, unless of course you area lot younger than either of us and I wouldalso suggest going at a warmer time of yearwith more daylight hours, than we did.

Despite not taking a cabin in the train, thejourney was very interesting and is idealfor any and everyone wishing to see theUSA over three or four weeks.

Tony Garbutt presented two plaques; one tothe Walcott Flood Wardens WEVA, and oneto Mundesley Lifeboat Flood Team for theoutstanding work and commitment shownon the 5th December.

Nick Alexander, Chairman of MundesleyLifeboat and Matt Allen WEVA team co-ordinator were pleased that Mundesleyood teams and Walcott Flood Wardenshave received recognition for rescuingover thirty people and pets.

Its thanks to the continued support of localpeople that our voluntary organisations arekitted out and trained to respond to those introuble in oods.

Following the debrief meeting at HM

Coastguard Station, Nth Norfolk MPNorman Lamb commented:

The response to Decembers oods fromthe Coastguard, Lifeboat Crews, FloodWardens and other emergency serviceswas simply brilliant.

It is a tribute to the dedication and expertiseof everyone involved professional staff andvolunteers that the worst oods in decadesdid not result in loss of life.

There is a huge clean-up operation to under-take but at the same time it is so importantthat we review what happened in Decemberso that we are fully prepared for next time.

I am personally really grateful for the effortput in by everyone involved and I know somany North Norfolk residents who feelthe same.

The debrief meeting chaired by Tony Garbutt, sector manager of the coastguard, (Above)reviewed the past incident looking at thestrengths and weaknesses of equipment, teams and organisation.

Future training was discussed and planned.

Grave Error.............at funeral down under. An English priest, ministering in Australia, recently had to wait nearly 6 hours to buryone of his parishioners.

The Priest-in-Charge of St John the Evangelists,in Newcastle, in New South Wales, the RevdChristopher Yates, originally from Manchester, was about to begin a funeral when theundertaker informed him that thegrave had not yet been dug.

I honestly did not know what to say or do,Mr Yates said I was racking my brain foranything Id learned during formation, orfrom other priests, but there was noreference point at all.

Mr Yates explained to the family that the gravehad not yet been dug, but that the undertakerswere working hard to x the situation. He invited the eulogists to take asmuch time as they wished.

Halfway through the funeral, which began at11am., Mr Yates received a message sayingthe grave would be dug in time for a 2pm.burial at the council cemetery, half a mileaway from the church.

At the end of the service, the congregationagreed to meet back in the church at 1.30pm.and until then the family would keep vigilaround the cofn.

In Port Stephens, where Mr Yatess parish islocated, there is only one licensed gravedigger,& on the day of the funeral he was a 45min.drive away. By 2.30pm. he had still not arrived, and unfortunately for him,the Mayor of PortStephens was at the funeral, and furiouslyembarrassed, Mr Yates said.

However, Australians are a resourceful lot.The news that there might not be a burial atall that day was greeted with: Thats it, Imgettin me shovel, and the dead mans sons

headed to the graveyard.By 3pm. Mr Yates had been told that the gravewould be ready in an hour. He spent the after-noon with the family, looking up their namesin the registers.

The atmosphere in the church around thecofn was jovial, he said. It was a littleabsurd to be laughing and talking in thepresence of their departed loved one, but, strangely, it was a good way to grieve.

The ceremonies at the graveside nallyconcluded at 4.30pm. The family askedMr Yates to join them for a drink.

I dont usually go to wakes, he said, buton this occasion I made an exception.

Did You Know........that we older folk are worth a fortune?

We have silver in our hair, gold in our teeth, stones in our kidneys, lead in our feet andgas in our stomachs!

We are never alone, having plenty of friendsround everyday. As soon as I wake up WILLPOWER helps me out of bed, and then I go tosee JIMMYRIDDLE, after which it's time for

breakfast with MR. KELLOGG, followed by

the refreshing company of MR. TETLEY orhis other friend, who I only know by hisinitials PG.

Then along come someoneI don't like at allARTHUR ITUS - he knows hes not welcome

but he insists on being there and, what's more,he stays for the rest of the day.

He likes to move around and takes me fromjoint to /oint.

After such a hectic day, I am glad to get tobed with JOHNNY WALKER.

    Oh, what a hectic life!

Another one I don't like is that ALZ HEIMERfellow who he is lurking about somewhere.

The Vicar called the other day and said that,at my age, I should be thinking of the hereafter

So I told him I did - all the time!

For no matter where I am - the bedroom, the kitchen, the sitting room or thegarden -I ask myself:

"Now what am I here after."

I'll close now and hope that WILL POWERis your constant companion too, but makesure that his friend EMMA ROYD doesnot creep up on you from behind!

And watch out for the crafty one who callshimself JERRY ATRICK!

Thanks to Stewart & Jennifer Barnes for this

Chronic ObstructivePulmonary DiseaseChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is acommon disease affecting between 20 to 30%of smokers over the age of 40 years.

Whilst cigarette smoking is the main cause in the

Western world, exposure to indoor cooking amesis the major cause in the developing world.

COPD has many other names; chronicbronchitis & emphysema are probablythe commonest and illustrate the diseasepatterns of the disease which are varied.

The symptoms of COPD are also varied, the commonest are:

Dyspnoea (shortness of breath) on exertion

    Sputum production

    Chronic cough (smokers cough!)

Repeated chest infections, particularlythroughout the winter months

The underlying cause of COPD is loss

of the normal lung tissue. This is caused by the effect of cigarette smokereleasing enzymes in the lungs which lead todestruction of the lung anatomy and anincrease in mucus production in thecells lining the airway walls.

The treatment of COPD has improvedenormously over the past 15 years.

The mainstay of therapy remains stoppingsmoking cigarettes.

All patients should have a chest X raywhen the diagnosis of COPD is made.

In addition there are many inhalers whichhelp improve symptoms.

They fall into two groups (beta agonistsor anticholinergics).

    They reduce breathlessness

    They reduce exercise limitation

    They reduce wheeze

    They improve health status

They can reduce exacerbationsand sputum production

    Examples of these inhalers are:

    Beta agonists

    Salbutamol which is short acting

Salmeterol which is long acting, twice daily

Formoterol which is long acting, twice daily

Indacaterol which is long acting, once daily

AnticholinergicsIpratropium Bromide which is short acting

Tiotropium which is long acting, once daily

Aclidinium Bromide which is long acting, twice daily

Glycopyrronium Bromide is long acting, once daily

Salbutamol, Formoterol & Ipratropium Bromidecan be used to relieve symptoms on a as requiredbasis. The others are used regularly to achieve

their maximum effect. Some patients take combination inhalers whichcontain an inhaled steroid as well as a long actingbronchodilator. Examples of these are Seretideor Symbicort inhalers. The inhaled steroid partin the device is recommended for patients whohave 2 or more exacerbations (are ups)oftheir COPD in the last 12 months.

There are many other important issues toremember in the management of COPD.

Having a regular inuenza vaccination, stayingwarm, following a self-management plan if youhave one, & attending pulmonary rehabilitation(which is a 6 week programme of exercise andeducation for which your GP or Practice nursecan refer you).

There are many sources of information aboutCOPD, but the one which provides a greatdeal of patient support is the British LungFoundation, they can be contacted on:

    03000 030 555or email at [email protected]

So if you have COPD or think you may haveCOPD and want more information, contactyour surgery or if you are a patient at theMundesley Medical Centre, ask to seeCarol Manson the practice nurseor Dr Daryl Freeman.

Mountain GorillaTrekI was hoping you would be able to help meby including this article in the Crab Talesas a means of encouraging some support

from your readers for my MountainGorilla Trek in July.

I am Holly Farnell and I have just nished myrst semester at the University of Surreystudying Maths with Music, during whichI decided to embark on a Trek in Ugandato raise money for the charityEast African Playgrounds.

Over three weeks in July, I will be trekking upto the peak of Mount Mutinda in the RwenzoriMountain Range at just under 4,000 metres andthen tracking the silverback mountain gorillasthrough the Impenetrable Forest.

Following this I will spend a week workingalongside Ugandan children, teaching them

arts and building them a new playground.

East African Playgroundsis a small, unknownbut incredible charity that promotes play andfocuses on the development and well-beingof East African children.

Volunteering with this charity in Uganda will besuch a life changing experience, and the moneyI fundraise will go towards the playground thatI help to build, meaning I will get to see thedifference I have made to the communityand the futures of its children.

I really feel that this amazing charity deserves tobe so much more widely known and the moremoney I can fundraise for them the better.

RomanceAn older couple were lying in bed one night.

The husband was falling asleep but the wifewas in a romantic mood and wanted to talk.

She said: "You used to hold my hand when wewere courting."

Wearily he reached across, held her hand fora second and tried to get back to sleep.

    Afew moments later she said:

"Then you used to kiss me."

Mildly irritated, he reached across, gave herapeck on the cheek & settled down to sleep.

Thirty seconds later she said: "Then you usedto bite my Neck."

Angrily, he threw back the bed clothesand got out of bed.

    "Where are you going?"she asked.

    "To get my teeth!"
