“Enjoy Your Crab Tales”

Philip Keddell 01263 519 628

From The Editor Yes, it is indeed Carnival time again.Once again Cromer is set to run the ever popular Carnival, full of fun and with all the events that are enjoyed by all the locals and visitors alike. I never cease to be always highly impressed by how well the Carnival committee pull it off. Whether it is getting all the tents etc. set up in the right locations or organising the breakfast for the many unpaid volunteers throughout the Carnival weeks and of course ensuring that everything runs smoothly during the parade through town on Carnival Day.Tony Shipp MBE is one of those people who always seems to pull everyone together in a calm and well organised way. Come rain or shine, the Cromer Carnival always works out brilliantly and I am in no doubt that Tony’s ability to manage people is due to his many years of working in education before his retirement a couple of years ago.(See Page 12 for all the details)On August 7th, I enjoyed joining the parade in the Sheringham Carnival (See Page 8) They are now in their 3rd year since being re-formed and they also have a great team of people organising it all.Having turned up in my silly VW Kubelwagen on my own, I met a young man keen to admire my silly car, so I invited him to join me while driving around the streets of Sheringham andgetting him to take the photographs.I was impressed by how well organised it all was while we drove along the route, even

without any street barriers along the route.I would like to thank Hubba (aka Dave Roberts) for the photograph above. I draw readers attention to the photograph on Page 4 of Paul Reynold’s half shaven face, I thought he looked more handsome with his beard than without it.I have to take my hat off to Victoria Craske for her fund raising climb in the mist. (Page 4)Many of you may well recall that Victoria was a senior attendent in the Cromer Carnival Royal Party some years ago now, she was always a thoughtful and lovely young lady.

Dear Philip, I live in Mundesley and have been following Janet Munro’s comments about the flowers (or lack of) in the beds above the slope to the beach. I have seen some of the beds in Cromer which also have the wild flowers in them and they look fine, but there is obviously a problem with the ones in Mundesley, they look awful, especially as we are now entering the main six week tourist part of the year.Surely there should be some back up plan to plant normal bedding plants in these circumstances, or if they are that desperate to save money it would look better if they just grassed them all over!Keep up the good work, Ian Pilcher. Dear Philip, I am writing to you to warn theatre goers who want to see the Seaside Special Show one DO NOT book seats in the front row. I took my sister to see the show for the first time (I’ve seen it many times)we sat in the front row and during the first half, a bubble machine was used and we were appalled to be covered with bubbles, our hair was soaking and our clothes were wet. During the interval I told one of the management team that it was not good as we now had to sit through the second half in damp clothing. He apologized and assured me someone would be in touch about this matter.

We watched the second show the following week, which was a great improvement on the first and during the interval we saw the same man and told him that no one had been in touch, he again apologized for this and assured me some one would contact me. Some weeks later I saw a young lady promoting the show in Nth Walsham. I told her my story and she said that was awful and that someone would definitely be in touch the next day. Guess what? I am still waiting.I do not expect any compensation, just an apology and perhaps an update on what has been done to improve the situation but obviously the customer is not important to these people so please warn all your readers: Do not Book The Front Row on show one. Regards,Janine Robinson

Dear Editor,On the 27th of July the rain held off giving the villagers of Southrepps a beautiful day to attend their dog show, being held in conjunction the Vernon Arms Beer Festival.‘It was really good fun’ stated sponsor Lesley Bradford of Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop, Cambridge, ‘I wanted to give back to the village, it’s a lovely place and the people are so friendly.’Matt Gordon and 7 month old Rolo, an Old English Sheep Dog, stole the show. After grabbing a first in ‘Best six legs’ they went on to win the title of

Dear Philip,We were pleased to be in Mundesley to see the Mundesley Players production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the last night. What a treat that was. From the novel staging, fine costumes and the excellent acting. Thanks to all involved and special congratulations to the Director. Having seen the outdoor production in Regent’s Park, while learning the play for GCE ‘O’ level many years ago, it was great to see it again.A truly dreamlike evening.Maureen JohnsonWare, Hertfordshire

Dear Editor,I would like to thank you for advertising our Great Ormond Street Hospital charity event that was held in July at The Links Hotel in West Runton. The event was a great success and raised £1,358.42 for the charity, which could pay for a recliner chair/sofa for parents to stay with their child at GOSH, or two new playrooms within the hospital, or 135 overnight stays for parents at the hospital hotel Weston House. Children was entertained by our surprise Disney guests, Mickey and Minnie mouse, and we had over 175 raffle prizes. A big thank you to local & national businesses for donating and supporting our charity event, and everyone who attended. We are now considering holding another charity for Great Ormond Street Hospital next summer. As a GOSH family we know much of a difference this money will make to so many families.

Many Thanks

Some of these actors are so two faced. See above. Thanks Paul Reynolds

Dear Philip,The Mount Snowdon challange was completed and I just want to thank all your readers and the fantastic clients of Hair Couture for their generous donations in helping me raise £622 for the Alzheimer’s society.

As you can see from the photo above, the day itself did not go as expected, as thick fog and extremely high winds tried to dampen our spirits but the five of us together (Barry Foulser, Sandra Foulser, Nathan Foulser and Jennifer Armstrong) ploughed on with the aid of jelly babies!Thank-you again for all of your suport and kind messages. Roll on the next challange.Yours,Victoria Craske

‘Southrepps 2013 Dog of the Year’ following close in second place was Lulu, owned by Mike Briggs and shown by Sarah Warnes. Other classes included ‘Best Veteran’, won by Flora Gair and Roxie, ‘Best Crossbreed’, ‘Best Pedigree’ and ‘Junior Handler’.Thank you to judge Gillian Carrick, locally based author specialising in pet health and to the rest of the team for making the day possible.Emily Gair

World’s Oldest Running Car Sells For $4.62M In A 3 Minute Bidding WarThis is the oldest motor vehicle car in the world that is still running and was built one year before Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the internal combustion engine. The vehicle has been sold at auction for more than double the pre-sale estimate, as 2 of the bidders chased the price up in a three-minute bidding war.The 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout drew a standing ovation as it was ‘driven up onto the stage’ at Friday’s Auction in Hershey, Pennsylvania, to prove that this 127-yr-old car really does run and attracted a starting bid of $500k, which was immediately doubled to $1M. Encouraged by the applauding crowd, bidding went swiftly up to $4.2M - 4.62M including the 10% commission, before the car was knocked down to a ‘unnamed buyer’. The Dos-a-Dos (Back-to-Back) Steam Runabout was built in 1884 by George Bouton & Charles-Armand Trepardoux for French entrepreneur Count de Dion, who named it ‘La Marquise’ after his mother. In 1887, with De Dion at the tiller, it won the world’s first ever motor race (it was the only entrant to make the start line!) covering the 32km from the Pont de Neuilly in Paris to

Versailles and back in One hour and 14 mins (an average of 25.9km/h) and, according to contemporary reports, hitting a breathtaking 60km/h on the straights. La Marquise has only had four owners, and remained in one family for 81 yrs and has been restored twice, once by the Doriol family and again by the British collector Tom Moore in the early 1990’s. Since then, it has taken part in

four of the London-to -Brighton runs and has collected a double gold at the 1997 Pebble Beach ‘d’Elegance in California.

The Editor would like to thanks to David Thorne for sending us this. PK

The Crab pots are an issue that I will not cover, other than to say that it is an issue that deserves no coverage from any publication.Having been a volunteer for the Mundesley Coastwatch I can recommend anyone to undertake the training involved to do a shift of say 2 hrs a week or more. Not only are the volunteers of this new site keeping a watch on the sea and the beach but are also

Always A Great DayThe Mundesley Lifeboat Day held on the park next to the Mundesley Coastwatch, is always a popular event every year, as it was once again on Sunday July 28th.It is very much all about the community getting together to have fun and raise money for this important voluntary service, saving lives out at sea.

Above: Amanda Ng with her daughter Daisy and friend Francesca. As always everyone enjoyed themselves and put their hands in their pockets to raise money for this local charity.Over £2000 was raised for the boat. PKBelow: Some of the crew relaxing in the lifeboat which was on display.

The Mundesley Players Pull It All Off AgainOnce again the production of A MidsummerNights Dream was like any, and everything that is produced by the Mundesley Players, was a great success and very much enjoyed by all who rolled up to see their enchanting production at the Coronation Hall, which was performed each evening from the 25th to the 27th July.Interestingly, the way in which the stage was set up to extend more into the hall than usual made you feel much more involved in the production, as wherever you were seated, you were much closer to what was going on.With the singers located on the balcony abovethe entrance to the hall, there was a delightful atmosphere and along with the beautiful scenery, the balance was just right. The cast included about 25 or more local people, who were all very much hands on, to pull off a great performance without any prompting needed.Without mentioning all the cast, I would like to say that the work of the Director David Ros was brilliant as was, in no particular order, Christon Sharpe as Theseus, Neil Elison as Nick Bottom, Paul Reynolds as Oberon and Yasmine Macklin-Page, with her wonderful voice as the Moth in the Fairies. It goes without saying that Dr Roger Burford as Peter Quince was brilliant, as was Cerian Ellson as Helena. In summary: everyone I spoke to on the night, and since, enjoyed the performance.Thank you Mundesley Players. PK Editor would like to thank Paul Damen for supplying these photographs.

Denise Burke Labour’s General Election candidate for Nth Norfolk

North Norfolk Labour Party has selected their party chair Denise Burke to run as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate in North Norfolk at the 2015 General Election.Denise has led a number of local campaigns including the Act on Ambulances & Protect Our Post campaigns and is a school governor and a volunteer in the community. She works with her husband, Stephen, on a number of initiatives to improve care for both young and older people. She runs the Good Care Guide - a ‘TripAdvisor’ style website for families using childcare & eldercare - and United for All Ages bringing young and old people together.Between 2004 & 2010 she worked for the Mayor of London on childcare and youth strategy. Previously she worked as a tax inspector for ten years, and headed up early years and childcare for Peterborough city council. She has pledged to fight for better care & health, more jobs, improved transport, affordable housing & coastal protection in north Norfolk - all areas she believes Norman Lamb and the government have failed to adequately address.Speaking after her selection Mrs Burke said: “I am proud and honoured that local members have selected me to be Labour’s general election candidate for North Norfolk. People here are being let down by Norman Lamb and a Tory-led Government that is making working families pay more while millionaires are getting a tax cut. Day in day out in Westminster Norman Lamb votes for policies that hurt people in North Norfolk and leave families here worse off.”She added: “North Norfolk now has a real choice in 2015 - between three Tory parties or a One Nation Labour Party. More of the same or a big change for the better. With our ageing population and rural communities, there are some major issues to be tackled here. From affordable housing to jobs and transport, care and schools to regeneration, we must do better. My mantra is ‘well behaved women rarely make history’ and I’m not scared of standing up for what I believe in and fighting for justice for local people.”To find out more about the Labour Party email: [email protected] or visit: www.norfolklabour.co.uk.

Even If You’re Not... ..........a Smallholder, this is a really fascinating Show, that Lis and I took a good friend along to on Sunday August 4th.The annual Norfolk Smallholders Training Group show and market took place in Sheringham Park, where we joined several hundred other good souls. I should to admit that, as a son of a New Zealand farmer, I have over the years lost touch with what farming is all about, particularly the breeds of livestock, many of which were on display here.It is always a very friendly and informative event for everyone to enjoy, including non farmers such as me.Alongside events in the main ring for dogs, their owners and children, this show does, I am sure, link the townies such as me with the local smallholders.Like NZ, England is one of those places where the linkbetween the town and country folk needs to be improved, so that we understand and relate to each other better and this show is one of the best ways of doing it.As always the alpacas (Below On Right) tend to draw a great deal of attention from the hundreds of people who attend this great local show every year. Likewise theWorking horse (On Right) .Whether it is tasting a healthy sample of roast pork from Brambles Farm pork or chatting to Rachel (below)

with her dogs, from Canine Connections the whole day is well worth a visit this time next year, whether or not you are a townie or country person with your family in tow.So watch out for it as there is so much to be learnt and to enjoy at this great show. PK

Saffron Insurance Services opened an office in Cromer’sBond Street on April 2nd for clients to receive insurance advice from Will Howett and his team. Since then hundreds of local residents have either phoned or popped in to organise their insurance.

Will has been an insurance broker for many years and understands the needs of the local community and what a response he has received! Will Howett said: “The feedback from businesses and residents has been fantastic. Saffron is very focused on good quality products at a competitive price, which all my clients have been pleased with”. The 1,000th policy was taken out by Peter Davison who was presented with a bottle of champagne as a thank you. Peter has commercial, motor and home policies with Saffron and was delighted to receive the champagne. Peter said: “I’ve known Will for a long time and trust him; he has always looked after me”.

“Online does not always fit the bill, our needs are a bit more complex and we need to talk to someone.” He added: “When you talk to other insurance companies they do not always understand what you want, but Will does.”

Saffron can assist with all business, home, motor and life insurance. Why not pop in and see Will, Tracey, Peter or Toby, we’re sure they’ll be able to help. Perhaps you can be the 2,000th policyholder.Visit us at 9 Bond Streetin Cromer. Or phone us on:01263 586 125Or by Email: [email protected]

Menopause Menopause is defined as the time when a woman’s monthly periods stop permanently due to loss of ovarian activity. For most women this is a naturally occurring event but it can be brought on prematurely by surgery (ovarian removal). A hormonal imbalance then brings on menopausal symptoms, which are variable and unpredictable ranging from mild to severe. In the UK the average age for the menopause is 52 years. About 80% of women experience menopausal symptoms and 45% of women find them distressing. The symptoms are usually self-limiting and so will improve naturally and last between 2 to 5 years. The perimenopause is the period of time before the full menopause, corresponding to when the level of hormone is decreasing and ends twelve months after the last menstrual period, when the menopause begins. At this time falling levels of hormones cause menstrual periods to become irregular, usually scanty and infrequent. Other menopausal symptoms can also occur during this time and the management is the same as for the menopause.Common physical symptoms of the menopause include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances and urinary and vaginal changes. Other symptoms include mood changes, loss of sexual drive and skin changes. Many women will be able to manage their menopausal symptoms with lifestyle changes. Helpful activities include taking regular exercise, avoiding possible triggers for hot flushes and maintaining a regular sleep pattern. Most women will be happy to “sit it out” in the knowledge that symptoms will improve in their own given time.Unfortunately there is a group of women with either very severe symptoms or who have a premature menopause, when help is required. These women are often benefited with HRT (hormone replacement treatment). However these women do have to be carefully and individually assessed to make sure that the benefits of taking HRT outweigh any potential medical risks.Women with a premature menopause have an increased risk of osteoporosis (bone thinning causing fractures) & heart disease (especially if they smoke). The benefits of taking HRT include improvement of menopausal symptoms and a reduction in the risk of osteoporosis. The risks of taking HRT include a small increased in the risk of breast cancer, cancer of the womb, ovarian cancer and blood clots.

For these reasons it is important that while on HRT the woman is regularly monitored to make sure that she is not getting unwanted side effects or increasing her risk of medical harm.

From The Week Poll WatchThe British public tends to assume things are worse than they really are. 51% think violent crime is rising, when in fact it has fallen steadily since 2006. 29% think we spend more on Jobseeker’s Allowance than on pensions. In fact we spend 15 times more on pensions (£4.9bn versus £74.2bn). We estimate, on average, that £24 in every £100 is lost to benefit fraud - when the real figure is 70p. We think 15% of girls under 16 get pregnant every year (the real figure is 0.6%). We think 43% of us voted in the last general election; it was actually 65%. We’re also confused about the make-up of Britain: we assume that 31% of the population are immigrants (rather than 13%), and that 24% are Muslims (5% in England & Wales)

(Bowtech - the original Bowen Technique) is a gentle, non-manipulative therapy that helps many conditions. The technique is gentle & stimulates the body's own natural healing processes. Simply stated the technique allows the body to reset and heal itself in a truly magnificent way.Bowen treats the whole person. My use of rolling type movements activate specific muscles, soft tissue, nerves and energy within the body. The technique is deceptively light, non-invasive and non-manipulative and done through light clothing.

From muscular pains and strains, to digestive imbalances, from migraines & headaches to respiratory problems and low or no-energy conditions, the technique aims to restore your body to the balance and harmony of its original 'blueprint'.I have been treating clients with this amazing therapy in Norfolk for over 16 years. A special interest has led me to study Bowen-NLP and Specific-Bowen-Mind-Body.A treatment lasts about 60 min. Please phone: 01263 825 438 or: 01263 711 712 to arrange an appointment or a callback to advise you on treatment.

Ingworth Trosh Ingworth Trosh, which has taken place on the 2nd Sunday in Sept. for the last 9 years, has moved to the 3rd Sunday as several seasons of challenging weather have meant that harvests have been delayed. Last year especially meant that Trosh took place before the harvest had finished so that available manpower was reduced. So the Trosh will be on Sunday 15th September on the new fields near the A140 Ingworth / Erpingham turn off. Follow the signs.

As well as the centre stage Ransome Thresher powered by the Field Marshall tractor there will be a Fun Dog Show. Not a Crufts, but classes for dogs of all shapes and sizes – on leads of course!Tradition will be kept however with ploughing demonstrations, bygones and vintage tractors and machinery. There will be the popular farmers market, alpacas, sheep shearing, owls & reptiles from the Seal & Bird Rescue Trust with raptor flying displays, and also the return of some members of the Norwich and Norfolk Medieval Association.

Plenty for children to do and see alongside stalls of country crafts & produce with refreshments available. Something of interest for everyone.Admission stays for the 3rd year at £4 per adult with children under 16 FREE.If you have a vintage tractor/machinery you would like to bring or would like to have a stall pitch (£20) – country pursuits especially welcome – please ring 01263 761 156 or 768 209.The Trosh is in aid of the three local medieval churches of Alby, Erpingham and Ingworth, all of which are in need of urgent repairs.

Until Sunday 1st September‘Priory Maze turning ‘Blue’

No it’s not the imminent arrival of winter, it’s the theme for the new NOVA artworks

are on the walls of the Priory Maze café near Sheringham until September 1st.

Far from being chilly, the shades of ‘Blue’ in this new display will be more reflective of the sparkling sea and the shimmering

sky of our coastal strip - with some quirky surprises too, including some lovely azure

papier maiche bowls and delicate pale-turquoise ceramics.

Exhibiting NOVA artists will be Ruth Brumby, Katrina Cole, Rainie Kay,

Shane Mallett, Sarah Scott & Jackie Watson. Futher info from: 01263 820 942.

For details of NOVA visit: www.artinnorfolk.co.uk

Dear Philip,As I know that you are a keen supporter of all things Mundesley, I expect that you were at Lifeboat Day.Mundesley Coastwatch( NCI Mundesley) regularly exercises with the Lifeboat crewby using our radio to guide them to mock incidents.

The picture above shows our stand at the Boat Day, with some of our volunteers. You probably know that we are open 365 days a year, 12 hours a day.We keep an eye on people and animals on the beach and the cliff. All types of shipping – large and small is also monitored.Best wishesAdrian Frais

Dear Editor,What an extraordinary response to an innocent swimmer ! Would Mr. Holmes have found it more acceptable for the gentleman to bathe fully clothed? Or perhaps Mr. Holmes is of the persuasion (voiced to me by a Norfolk primary school child) that you only swim in swimming pools - the sea is just for paddling in?Sarah WatkinsIngworth

Sheringham Lifeboat Service LaunchThe Sheringham Lifeboat was launched at the request of Humber Coastguard on Thurs 1st August to go to the assistance of two young people on a Jet Ski which had broken down approx 1 mile off Water Lane West Runton. The tide was on the last of the ‘flood’ with a 3 knot easterly wind generating a ½ metre of swell. The father of the of the two young people padelled a Kayak out to to help and being unable to re-start the Jet Ski all three then decided to swim ashore. The Lifeboat arrived and collected all three, who were being taken away on the flood. The Life-boat returned to the Jet Ski which by then was being blown a long way off; and towed both the Jet Ski and kayak back to West Runton beach where the casualties were handed over to the coastguard to be de-briefed.Fundamental LessonAlways stay with the craft.
