Anyone who has ever seen one of Steve Hewletts shows as a Ventriloquist will agree that he and his puppets are simply brilliant.During last years Mundesley Festival, in August, I ended up on the stage with another volunteer, trying to be as good a Ventriloquist as Steve.

One Show Is Not Enough For Steve & His Jolly Team

I can assure you that this is an impossible task for anyone to even think of achieving.Due to Steve being a finalist in Britains Got Talent, his show at the Mundesley Festival has already sold out. He will however be doing an extra matinee at the Coronation Hall at 3.45pm on Thursday 8th of August.

Dear Mr Keddell,I thought these photographs might interest your Crab Tales readers.

At the Pebbles Pre-School and Daycare Centre in Mundesley, robins have taken up residence and plan to rear their offspring in the outdoor toys shed. The children all enjoy feeding the birds and we have already had one robins nest in the garden but the one in the shed was a surprise!

The children at Pebbles are already encouraged to be close to nature: theres regular play in the outside area where they grow vegetables and flowers and care for the resident chickens.

As Pebbles is a Forest School, we take groups of children to Bacton Woods to learn and be inspired by a woodland environment. However, with the robins arrival it seems that nature is taking its own course and choosing to get closer to the children who eagerly await the day the eggs hatch.Kind regardsCatherineDear Philip,We would like to thank everyone who came to or were involved with the E.A.A.A. dinner at Northrepps Cottage Hotel on 12th April. We raised 315:00 for the charity & it was a great success, so another dinner has been arranged in aid of the Air Ambulance. See Special Events page for further details.Yours faithfully Val Laker Dear Philip,It has come to my attention that Cromer Chamber of Trade have been advising retailers that there may be an issue surrounding the displaying of merchandise on the pavement outside their premises. Have they got nothing better to consider? We are supposed to be taking on a more Continental feel and this is the result. To a lot of traders, these displays are an extension of their shop

    Enjoy Your Crab Tales

    Philip Keddell 01263 519 628

From The Editor Not often do I put myself on the front cover ofthis local paper, but having never published these photos before, due to the then Crab Line been owned by someone else at the time, I thought I would print Paul Damens great pictures that were taken at last years Mundesley Festival. We have always enjoyed Steve doing his routines both in Cromer and Mundesley.I recall seeing Steve at a Press Launch of the Seaside Special on the Pier a few years ago when he was entertaining 2 of dancing girls with a female puppet and I had a go at him, by explaining to them that this was only a puppet that was talking to them.Steves (Puppet) then decided to put me in my place and I must admit that after a few minutes Steve had me apologising to both the two dancers and his lady puppet. In simple terms Steve is brilliant as are his assistants / puppets.Within the first few days of this issue coming out we (Lis, self and Lis grandson Geogory)are off to Germany to visit Lis family and attend her 2nd sons 50th Birthday Party in the Black Forest near Freiburg.Flying by Ryanaire may well be cheaper than your normal type of flight, but booking the flights is very time consuming and very hard work in getting it right. As a Kiwi Passport holder it is hard work booking flights sometimes as they seem to have no idea that I can now travel in

and out of European cities, becuase I have a stamp in one of my old passports giving me the right to do so.As for getting a British PassportI would have no problems, other than it costing something like750 plus.I draw readers attention to the fact that my VW Kubelwagen is now very much back on the road again with me proudly driving it. (See Page Six). Now all I want is for the sun to shine, so that I can get the roof pulled back.Readers who do not live and enjoy life in our catchment area can now enjoy reading their Crab Tales on line by visiting our website and downloading the last three issues. Our website site is: www.crab-tales.co.ukThis is all thanks to one of our advertisers,Gary, from Norfolk Computers. window, and it would be totally impractical to store this merchandise inside. Certainly down Garden Street, this creates an ambience in keeping with being at the seaside. The street in the height of the season is heaving with people, and any extra pavement space would be inconsequential. Do we want tourists to use and support our traders, or do we want to become another casualty of the ever declining High Street we see in so many other towns and cities. I suggest that whoever is responsible for considering changing a winning formula, goes back to their Ivory Tower and thinks again.Yours sincerelyS Taylor

Dear Mr. Keddell,Each year the United Norwich Kidney Patients Assoc. take a group of over 40 Kidney Patients and their Carers on a holiday to Holland. The Patients dialyse at the Renal centres of the Norfolk and Norwich, James Paget or Cromer Hospitals and many of whom would be unable to have a holiday without this being arranged for them. They are taken to a holiday resort where they stay in rented houses, on a site which has an excellent Dialysis unit where

Dear Philip,The letter from Derek of Roughton in the last Crab Tales somehow didn't ring true. When I see someone sitting in a bus shelter I assume, however rashly, that they are waiting for a bus. Did Derek approach this woman and ask if she was homeless? If so, no woman in her senses would fall for such a chat-up line.On Derek's 2nd winge; if they can fake putting a man on the moon I'm sure someone can come up with a sensible compromise over parking charges in Cromer. Although, as a pedestrian, I have noticed that motorists are reluctant to pay anything toward the privilege of driving. If they are not complaining about parking charges it is petrol prices or the cost of tax and insurance. Finally, like you I am keeping my fingers crossed for fine weather during carnival week. However, as a survivor of four Handsworth Carnivals I do have to say that I find the Cromer Carnival a wee bit dull. Hard to imagine reckless gun-play on Church Street and it is unlikely you will be offered anything more potent than a peppermint. That said, I am looking forward to the Batucada and the young ladies sashaying along the route to the samba beat.Very life affirming, that.John Crump

they able to receive the treatment which they require three or four times a week. The cost of the Holiday gets more expensive each year and including travel (Coach Hire, Ferry) accommodation and Insurance is in excess of 26,000. Due in part to the current financial situation we are having difficulties in raising the amount of money required. The charity is an independent charity purely run by volunteers who raise moneys by street collections, a hundred club and donations. However it looks at the moment that we may not have enough money this year to proceed with the holiday, since we are approximately 3,000 short of our target and unless we can find the shortfall by the end of July we may have to cancel the holiday for this year. For further details contact Mrs. Sandy Lines (Chairman of UNKPA) on 01603 783 003 or email: [email protected] LeeTrustee & Committee Member

Tuesday June 25th was indeed a lovely day with the afternoon being spent witnessing 8 awards being given out by the NNDC to people who had set up their businesses locally with the help and advice of the District Councils Enterprise North Norfolk Business training programme.Handing out the awards was the Leader of the NNDC Cllr Tom Fitzpatrick, alongside Cllr Russell Wright as Cabinet member for Business Enterprise and EconomicDevelopment. The event took place in Cathy Howletts (Centre Front Row) new business which she took over on the 2nd of May this year, The Victorian Tea Rooms on Meadow Road, Cromer.

Well Deserved Awards Handed OutAfter working for the NHS, before deciding to take over this existing business in Cromer, I did have to ask Cathy Howlett Why?I have always wanted to run a business like these Tea Rooms. So, when my husband needed to move up here, I took the bull by the horns and took on this place. After, I would add, a great amount of help from the NNDC, particularly in marketing and the numerous other aspects of business advice. They were really helpful people to work alongside. I continue to look to them for help and would encourage others to seek their help in organising their businesses.Other awards went out to people who had made a change to their careers.

(Pic On Right Below)Left: Elaine Owers who now works as aspecialist in Tapestry.Having workedfor a national organisation before, she is now workingin the private sector.Right: Sarah Harris was a legal secretarybefore setting up her on-line young Childrens clothing business.

It really was great to see so many new businesses setting up successfully and I wish them all the very best. PKThe Victorian Tea Rooms (above) are really looking good these days.

Summers Here........and it is the 36th YearThere are 140 shows of the Seaside Special over the coming season, so do partake of the friendly surroundings.

We have 4 acts this summer with a combinationof song, dance, magic, impressionism, comedy & illusion. The latter from Dain Gordean, who is headlining again this year, with his personality drawing the audience to him. Wait until you see his exceptional illusions. Danny Posthill likewise has hilarous and impressive impersonations.Comedy and a great voice is offered up with the return of Jo Little to the show and hello to vocalist David Jon ONeill. All have cleverly funny entertaining skills. The scene-stealer had to be the slapstick sketch, I havent laughed that much for many moons. Our five dancers were resplendent in classy and fun custumes. They romped through manydifferent routines with enthusiasm and spectacular style. The show is packed with a wonderful montage of entertainment and a stage full of movement. It all bounces along with a mix of laughter, razzle-dazzle, diversity and fun.Much hard work went into this production from all those concerned.Hi again to Jo, in her special seat in the front row, which she has been occupying for so many years now.You cannot fail to be impressed, it is everybodys kind of show.Expectations are fulfilled and maybe you should pick up some of the Pavilion Theatre Vouchers as they make perfect pressys.

A Very Successful Day Was Had By All InvolvedOn Friday June 14th, these fourladies organised a day of golf to raise money and awareness for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, PSO which Sams mother Marion Shrevesuffers from.(Pictured on Right):L-R: Sally Ing, Ali Cook,Sam Hele & Fiona SpencerBy all accounts with 18 groupsof four, playing from 9am until after 6pm, the Mundesley Golf Club was a hive of activity and fun raising loads of money for PSP Progressive Supernuclear Palsy fund. Each of the holes was sponsored by several local companies whichincluded Crayford & Abbs witha selection of their Nissan cars on display around the front of the Clubhouse.Over the green, near the former hospital, a group from the Relax Driving School were offering cold drinks to the numerous passing golfing teams.L to R:Colin Flook, Sharon Coxand Chris Posthumus. Was it a good day? I would say that that is a silly question, as having targetted to raise 1,000 these ladies raised over 4,500, on the day, and are still getting more funds in.Not only did this event raise much needed funds for PSP but it was enjoyed by all involved in the event.

The winning team on the day were Pete & Pat Wood and Alan & Ruth Epton, all of whom aremembers of this club. PK

A Personal Service through to a Professional Finish

  • Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. NR27 9DS10

Personal budgets are designed to allow people to spend an allocated budget on care & support, as they wish, rather than being allocated a given number of hours of care by the LA. The fairer contributionssystem attempts to sort out the basis of charging where there is no fixed number of hours of care. The charge is calculated on a percentage basis according to income & capital. The philosophy behind this is one of personalisation to enable people to receive the support they choose and to enable people to spend their budget as they think best. The result of this well-intentioned thinking is that it is not very clearly defined and so makes it difficult to challenge a personal budget set by the LA which is too low. There have been a number of cases brought to Court to challenge insufficient home care provision where the LA has set too high or tight eligibility criteria resulting in insufficient care or payment for care.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

Funding Home Care Part 2. National Guidance on Charging for Home Care. by Anna Lloyd Legal Executive with Hayes + StorrThere are two pieces of guidance on charging for home care. The first on fairer charging sets out a framework for charging. This is supplemented by the second piece of guidance on fairer contributions.Fairer charging sets out a framework for calculat-ing the charges. The charges should not reduce the persons income to less than the value of income support plus 25% and should not take earned income into account. Peoples assets (savings & capital) can be taken into account. The amount of capital disregarded should not be lower than the national guidelines prescribed for charging for residential care. The upper limit for residential care charging is 23,250. If you have more than this the Local Authority (LA) may ask you to pay the full cost for care. Under residential charging rules, capital of between 14,250 & 23,250 will be assessed on the basis of an assumed (or tariff) income. For every 250 (or part of 250) of capital you have over 14,250, you will be assessed as though you have an extra 1 per week of income. This assumes a return of 52 per annum on an investment of 250, i.e. of more than 20%, which is quite clearly unachievable. Unlike residential care funding, the persons home is not taken into account when calculating home care charges. This is because the home is needed for the person to live in. Capital earmarked for a specific item can be dis-regarded but this needs to be declared and the reason explained. Spouses/partners income and assets are not normally taken into account either. The situation is slightly different where assets are held jointly.

Living With PainIn my last article, I wrote about the importance of activity, even though you have chronic pain. Most of you who read these articles and who live with a chronic incurable pain condition will understand this concept however some haven't experienced it. Okay: Over the next month or months your mission is (if you choose to accept it) to perform two tasks: 1. Choose an activity you really enjoy and work out your limit for performing this activity. There are two ways to do this i. Unrealistic: Walk 10 kms today...after 20 steps the pain kicks in, you go back indoors. flop down, judge yourself, cry and give up.ii. Realistic: Walk 20 steps today: 10 steps to the garden gate and 10 steps back. Result: 'I did it! Bear Grylls look out!' So, here's an example of personal limits (PPLs) {these are hints not commands by the way}: walk - 2 mins, swim: 5 mins, sit at computer 10 mins, do the washing up (what!). Pat yourself on the back: 365 days a year. These are realistic PPLs. So that's the fun part....now here comes 2. How long would you like to do your favourite activity?

STOP RIGHT THERE AND BE REALISTIC. 1. Determine a realistic PPL for your activity; e.g. if your first PPL stroll is is 2 mins then you could set your next goal to 3 mins and so on. A little more at a time. Don't double it...just add a minute at a time...some can add more minutes or more quickly others not....be kind to yourself at all times (another useful tip is: if you are going to walk for 2 mins...that equals 1 min one way and 1 min back...otherwise carry a mobile and the cab fare!). Important: on 'good' days avoid aiming to do more than your PPLs. Why?....because the next day you may feel exhausted and back to square one. Even more importantly on 'bad days' return to your first set of PPLs. Reward yourself each time and be kind to yourself. If you don't reach your PPLs then stop, re-evaluate and BE REALISTIC. Never, ever, push yourself beyond your PPLs; this could result in setbacks such as injury, disappointment, frustration, anger, giving up and telling yourself you are useless. You are not useless....you are in control of your PPL...and you only. This is based on my experience. I used to be a very active person who loved to run, go on long-distance walks and snowboard and then through injury and EDS I now live by my PPLs...so I'm with you all the way.

    Thanks to Bee for this.

Oldie British Artists AwardA few days ago we received this e-mail from Margaret Newton.Dear Philip,Some weeks ago, I was selected for the Oldie British Artists shortlist with my painting of the staff at Keys Cafe.I took details to the E.D.P. and they asked me for a photograph. So I promised two of my youngest grandchildren they could be in it, however they could not come over to be photographed for a day or two because of school dance classes etc. In the meantime they published the article without the picture and the children are still looking for their photograph so could you try and find space in the Crab Tales please, it is a pretty picture.Thank you, Margaret

Local artist and writer Margaret Newton has been shortlisted for the O.B.A.A., which recognises the achievements of British Artists over the age of 60, eleven pictures were on the short list including her painting of The Cafe Staff at Keys Auction rooms.Last winter Margaret did a series of paintings of people who came into town on market day called Just Another Monday. The chosen painting pictured here, held by Margaret, was one of them and her grandchildren, Willow &Summer Bushel are holding their portraits. Margaret has also painted the immediate members of her family tree, all 63 of them! If a local school is teaching about family trees & would like to borrow them, please contact her at:[email protected] Margaret lives in Cromer with her husband Ian who is also an artist.

Dear Editor,St Michaels Church, Aylsham was the venue for a fund raising concert organised by the Royal British Legion & the Womens Section RBL. The audience enjoyed the singing of Marham Bluebirds, (Military Wives Choir) who sang a varied programme and sharing the billing were singer Dale Bullimore and the local group the Aylsham Players. The 1st prize of 200 off a holiday was donated by CAS Travel, other prizes donated by local businesses and our members helped us raise a staggering 1232.72 which included money raised during the morning efforts in the town. This has been split between the RBL. and the Womens Section RBL., for our continuing Welfare work for Service personnel past and present. We are grateful to all who supported us on the night, the Rev Andrew Beane for allowing usto use the church and to his team who served interval refreshments, to help church funds. The Effect Of These Four Words...........I Love You, SweetheartA group of women were at a seminar on how to live in a loving relationship with your husband. The women were asked:"How many of you love your husband?"All the women raised their hands. Then they were asked: "When was the last time you told your husband you loved him?"Some women answered today, some yesterday, some couldn't remember. The women were then told to take out their cell phones and text their husband: "I love you, sweetheart."The women were then told to exchange phones and to read aloud the text message responses.

Here are some of the replies:1. Who is this?2. Eh, mother of my children, are you sick?3. I love you too.4. What now? Did you crash the car again?5. I don't understand what you mean?6. What did you do now?7. ?!?8. Don't beat around the bush, just tell me how much you need?9. Am I dreaming?10. If you don't tell me who this message is actually for, someone will die.11. I thought we agreed we would not drink during the day.12. Your mother is coming to stay, isn't she??
