From The Editor

Dear Editor,I was absolutely disgusted when I read theletter from Mr Graham in the Crab Tales. Ihave never read such bigoted and shallowminded comments in my life ! I havemanaged charity shops in the past (startingas a volunteer when I was unemployed after

being made redundant) and had a wide rangeif volunteers, all of whom were invaluable. How dare Mr Graham comment on peoplethat he does not know. Volunteering, aswell as giving something to the communitycan be a life line to someone whomay had had a hard time and lost theircondence. It can relieve loneliness andhelp a person feel valued. Keep up thegood work Cromer volunteers you should all

be proud of yourselves. Regards Annelouise Avis

Dear Editor,I am writing to complain about your

publishing of the letter by Philip Grahamin issue 075. I think this letter goes well

beyond opinion and enters the realm ofhatred and abuse. cont...

I am not alone in my view. The letter andyour role in dealing with it have beendiscussed and generally condemned on theCromer Facebook page. I am not myselfan unemployed individual, but I feel forthose who are, and also for younger peoplein general who work in charity shops andwho have read Mr Graham’s chilling andrepellant bile.If you have any decency you should print anapology in your next issue.Yours faithfully,Ian Webster

REPLY FROM THE EDITOR.Well Ian, thank you for your letter. I hope Iam a decent person but an apology from mewould be inappropriate .The oft quoted words attributed to Voltairespring to mind, “I disapprove of what yousay, but I will defend to the death your rightto say it”. Not sure I would go quite that far.Freedom of speech does not exist to allow

people to say the popular. It exists so thatviews that some disagree with can be aired. Our obligation is to allow reply, which ihope you feel we have done.  continued page 4.

Austrian Wines really did Trimingham proud withtheir selection of wines at the tasting last Friday,Chris and his charming wife Ingrid came notonly bearing wine but Austrian smoked pork patedelicious. Dear Editor,We are writing to thank all of those whosupported us and the Cromer and DistrictFoodbank at our fundraising dinner onFriday 20 November 2015 at the ConstantiaRestaurant, East Runton. It was a fun evening with good food andentertainment from Simon Curtis and theConstantia Brothers. The Right Honourable Norman Lamb MP

popped in and generously donated a bottle ofsigned House of Commons Wine and tea fortwo at the Houses of Parliament which wereauctioned and raised a stunning £200 on the

night.People also generously donated 24 bags ofmuch needed supplies to the foodbank whichwill support those in need in North Norfolkover this festive season.A stunning £642 was raised on the nightand we would just like to thank everybodyfor their support and generosity.YoursMichael & Laura White

Dear Editor

I have to say that once again the villagersof Gimingham, Mundesley, Knapton,

Paston and Trunch have really pulled thestops out. Collectively you have raised£4180.19 for the Poppy Appeal. Thisamount is outstanding. I cannot nd thesuitable words to give you all the thanksyou deserve. Your donations, churchcollections, the work by our house to housecollectors, hours spent by collectors outsideMundesley Post O ce in miserable weatherand the help given by proprietors allowingPoppy Trays in shops and pubs all gotowards the national gure.

Nationally £51 million was spent last yearhelping those in need. The Royal British Legion was able to fund

Recovery Centres around the country to helpthose badly injured to regain their health, with a further £18 million.Every week last year the Royal BritishLegion was able to channel a staggering£1.7 million into its welfare activities for exservicemen.Derek SidawayPoppy Appeal Organiser Mundesley and District

Dear Editor,I was more than shocked at the letter you

printed from “Philip Graham” in issue 75.how dare he assume young people are all “illshaven scrubags” or work shy criminals.Sheringham and Cromer do not oer muchemployment for its young citizens, exceptseasonal work. And if the Job Centre, callingit a “Labour Exchange” reflects Mr Grahamsgeneration, hope to help young people gain workexperience via voluntary roles, then theseyoung people should be encouraged, Notinsulted.Had it not occured to Mr Graham that many

people, regardless of age, nd social skills

a problem. And the sort of bigoted attitudeof people like him deserves to stay in thedark victorian workhouse days.Yours Respectfully

A big thank you from the Wings AppealOrganiser for the North Walsham Branchof the Royal Air Forces Association MrR.E Barker wants to thank all those who

gave their time to help in the collectionsin Hoveton, North Walsham, Aylshamand Mundesley and the public for theirgenerosity. “Together we raised the sum of£2830. I would also like to thank thosestores and shops that also helped in manyways but mainly by providing us with shelterfrom the weather.”

The Wings Appeal is the RAF Association’son-going fundraising campaign that runs

throughout the year. It is the fundraising armof the Association and helps raise the vitalfunds needed to support serving and ex-RAF

are needed. Whether it’s an injured airmanghting to get back onto his feet, a youngchild missing their parent away on overseas

operations or a WWII veteran needing ashoulder to lean on, we are here to help.Wings Appeal fundraising is recognised

by the wing emblem that we use on ourfundraising appeals, so if you see the wingit means that the funds raised go towardshelping those in need of our welfare help.

Sheringham CoastwatchNeeds You!

If variety is the spice of your life, being a volunteer with SheringhamCoastwatch must be the ideal role for you. What other voluntary role ranges from giving water to a thirstydog to (on one occasion!) helping to dispose of a hand-grenade? Orhelping a holiday-maker with weather or tidal information and thenhelping in a Coastguard search. And all without moving more thanten feet.

Our volunteers keep a lookout over the clis, beaches and sea visiblefrom the former Coastguard lookout high above the Sheringhamgolf course. If we spot someone in trouble we immediately contactthe emergency services (usually HM Coastguard) and provide anyassistance requested by them.So as well as enjoying the spectacular views there is enormoussatisfaction in knowing that we are helping to ensure the safety ofthose on the sea or using the beaches and cli paths.Whether you are male or female, of working age or retired, youcould enrich your life by joining our friendly group of volunteers.Members come from many dierent backgrounds and “work” forthree hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

No previous maritime experience is needed. Full on-the-job trainingand on-going support is provided. Professionalism and commonsense are the order of the day, not physical ability.

Norfolk man completes WorldWar One Pillbox Trail A World War Two enthusiast has turned his attention to thehistoric legacy of World War One and completed a trail aimed athighlighting Norfolk’s built heritage. Alan Hancock, from Great Yarmouth, spent a day trackingdown 12 of the 14 pillboxes which appear in the North NorfolkWorld War One Pillbox Trail leaet. The trail forms part of North Norfolk’s World War One

Centenary Commemorations 2014-2018 and oers directionsand advice on how to nd the structures. It was launched in thesummer by North Norfolk District Council in partnership withmembers from the NNWN (North Norfolk WW1 Network). Mr Hancock said his wife had picked the leaet up fromSheringham Tourist Information Centre during a day visit. “I am mainly interested in World War Two but also have aninterest in World War One,” said Mr Hancock. We spent thebest part of a day on the trail, starting with the furthest pillboxfrom home, at Stikey. We then worked our way down alongcoast and then inland, nding 12 in all. It was a lovely drive andan interesting challenge. “Considering they are all the best part of 100 years old, I wassurprised to nd how well preserved the pillboxes were.“Some were harder to nd than others because they werecovered with ivy and overgrowth.”

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Culture at NorthNorfolk District Council, said: “The built heritage of NorthNorfolk is something to be celebrated in many dierent ways. The pillbox project is helping people discover a very specic andimportant part of that heritage. The trail is a fascinating day outfor history enthusiasts.” The pillboxes are located at Stikey, Weybourne, Beeston Regis,Aylmerton, Thorpe Market, Bradeld, Little London on the edgeof North Walsham, White Horse Common, Wayford Bridge and

TINSEL, TURKEY &TRAUMA

It’s that time of year again, pulling out thedecorations, fattening the turkey and thecoming together of the tribe all building tothat one special day Christmas!Unlike many other countries wherethroughout the year various events, both

religious and non-religious are celebratedwith great and communal outpourings(Thanksgiving in the USA for example) wein the UK focus all our energies on this oneday. As someone who doesn’t celebrate thisfestival I’m still fascinated by the sort ofmadness it instils in the people aroundme who do. Of course Christmas is allabout ethics and values linked to Christiantradition, the practice of giving, charity, sharing, coming together of family, remembering old friends and making newones, love and compassion. So why is it so stressful! As the whole populace in a sort ofunconscious frenzy moves towards the 25thDecember we see an increase in mentalhealth issues or rather their symptoms, suchas depression, suicide, aggression to namea few. Also why as a community orientatedevent does isolation actually become moreacute not less, I know it’s a bit of a clichéthese days but it has more meaning thanever; have we forgotten what Christmasreally means.Maybe it’s worth doing something you havenever done before like introduce yourselfto a neighbour who you know is alone fora chat on the door step, in such a rural areamany people are disconnected from family.

If you’re not comfortable approaching astranger in your area pop a Christmas cardthrough the door with a warm note and

best wishes they may connect with you onanother day. When you are altogether as a family, is theresomeone who sits apart in the room?Connectwith them, not everyone is comfortable infamily gatherings, I know I’m not, it maymake all the dierence in the world and it’sthe one day you can do something out of thenorm.

I will not pretend to have all the answers, though I have a few, here is a guide for those

who struggle through this period and even ifyou don’t it’s worth taking note:• Most important, don’t be afraid toask for help, draw on the people around youdon’t take on the burden of Christmas aloneit’s a shared experience, and that includes allthe work behind it.

• Talk to someone about how youreally feel at this time of year its surprisinghow therapeutic a chat can be to release a bitof pressure

• If you are alone and have accessto the internet, use it to connect with others, you will be surprised how many peopleshare similar feelings to you about this timeof year and you can always be anonymousonline

• Treat yourself, if you live alonespoil yourself because you deserve it

• Choose not to celebrate Christmasat all or start your own tradition

• Watch your alcohol intake try notto start drinking to early and pace yourselfas it leads to irritability, low mood, evenaggressive behaviour and can exasperate

mental health conditions.

• Remember its only one day.

To all the readers of Crab Tales have ahappy and therapeutic Christmas and tothose of us who do not celebrate this festivalenjoy your day o.If you wish to contact me about anything intoday’s article please drop me a line.David Maddax Dip. (M)BACP.Email: [email protected] Mobile: 07941106928

Patients urged: pleasedon’t ask for painkillerson prescriptionIt’s your NHS – please use it wisely is themessage to people in North Norfolk andrural Broadland as a new campaign seeksto highlight the true cost of providingsmall quantities of low-dose painkillers on

prescription.GPs at the 19 member practices within

North Norfolk Clinical CommissioningGroup (CCG) currently write about 107,000

prescriptions a year for paracetamol andibuprofen at a cost of £400,000.But the CCG has agreed to change its

approach to make the best possible useof resources. As a result, GPs are to stop

prescribing these painkillers in smallquantities for short-term use, with patientsencouraged to purchase their own from alocal shop, supermarket or pharmacy.By choosing less expensive generic orin-store brands, patients can buy their

paracetamol or ibuprofen for less than halfthe price the NHS pays when providingthemon prescription.Dr Linda Hunter, North Norfolk CCG’sclinical prescribing lead and a member of itsGoverning Body, said it was important that

patients were aware of the drugs’ true cost to

the NHS.With 16 paracetamol or ibuprofen tabletswidely available for between 20p and 40p,the fees the NHS pays to provide them on

prescription can be much higher than thecost of the drugs.“At a time when the NHS is facing hugenancial pressures, providing smallquantities of these painkillers on prescriptionis not an eective use of funds,” Dr Huntersaid.“Every time a doctor writes a prescription, the NHS incurs charges through dispensingand administrative fees – and if GP time isalso included the cost rises even higher.“By doing so they will help us save moneythat we can then invest elsewhere – to ensureit’s spent providing care for the patients in

North Norfolk and rural Broadland who need

it the most.”As part of its campaign, North Norfolk CCG has produced postersfor local GP practices, health centres and libraries. These explainthat the £400,000 spent each year prescribing paracetamol andinbuprofen as tablets, caplets, gel and suspension products isequivalent to more than,• 80 more hip replacements or • 15,385 more hormone treatments for breast cancer or • 18,000 more Alzheimer’s drug treatments (average cost) or • 490 more cataract operations or • 13 more chemotherapy treatments

Patients with existing medical conditions who require paracetamoland ibuprofen in large quantities or higher doses will continue to

MUNDESLEY GETS ALLDICKENSIAN

Make a note of the date, Sunday, December 13th. Mundesley will be having a Dickensian Street Market and Carol Singers. Youcan also enjoy food, mulled wine, a free Father Christmas in his

Grotto and the Village Lights Switch-On. Starts 2.00PM. No entry fee so it promises to be a great event that all can

enjoy. The Parish Council choose this over the other proposedDickensian theme with all children over the age of eight sent tothe Workhouse and the young and elderley fed a suspicious thin

grey stew.I myself have been eyeing up the prize Turkey in the Butcherswindow, you know the really big one. Sadly i have nowhere tostore it so i’ll probably get it Christmas morning if i can nd a

local lad to fetch it and of course if the butchers are open.
