Christopher Johnson 9/1 Piano Recital Sells Out Second Performance Booked for 9/2

Pianist Christopher Johnson has described the program for hisSeptember 1 recital at The Sembrich, “My favorite all-Chopin pro-gram---EVER!” Evidently local music lovers feel the same way,as all but five tickets for his performance were snapped up almosttwo weeks prior to the event. To meet the high demand, organiz-ers have scheduled a second performance at the Marcella Sem-brich studio, on Sunday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. Johnson will perform Chopinʼs Barcarolle in F-sharp Major, andwhat he terms the “mysteriously austere” Polonaise in E-flatMinor. He also will play "Revolutionary" Etude, two mazurkas andthe “Heroic” Polonaise. Chopinʼs compositions, he explains, de-mands a “Mozartian perfection and yet, the figurations are farmore extended, the harmonic vocabulary far richer, and themelodies far more adorned. In short, the technical demands canbe brutal.” According to critics, Johnson is equal to the job. SaysRobert H. Newall of The Ellsworth American, "Johnson haseverything to make a big career: musicality, technique to squan-der, a touch capable of the merest whisper or a thunderoussound and stage presence. With these indisputable gifts, heshould shortly be following in the footsteps of Murray Perahia orKrystian Zimerman."Johnson, who has made annual appearances at The Sembrichsince 2007, confides that he is drawn to the audience here andto the unique setting. “The audience is knowledgeable, sophisti-cated, and spirited. The experience is very up close and per-sonal, as people are sitting just feet away -- watching every moveand hearing every sound (also a bit daunting). The venue is pro-foundly inspirational, as Marcella Sembrich was one of the great-est singers of all time. It is also ineffably beautiful and charming, interwoven with nature just feet away from Lake George itself.”The Sembrich is found at 4800 Lakeshore Drive, Bolton Landing, and tickets are $30. For more information see www.thesem-brich.org or call 518-644-2431.

Navy Seaman Recruit Amanda Cable, granddaughter of SusanJ. Dicks of Lake Luzerne, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navybasic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Cable completed a variety of

training which included classroom study and practical instructionon naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placedon physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This ex-ercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to suc-ceed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize thebasic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and en-durance in each recruit through the practical application of basicNavy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commit-ment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into ac-count what it means to be a Sailor. Cable is a 2006 graduate of Hadley Luzurne High School of LakeLuzerne, N. Y.

Volunteers Needed for Suicide Prevention Hotline SO. GLENS FALLS – The Moreau Community Center has re-ceived its second grant from the NYS Office of Mental Health(OMH) to provide a crisis hotline and crisis chat line to communitymembers in distress. This program, which provides service onthe National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and CrisisChat.org, isoperated in partnership with Family & Childrenʼs Services of theCapital Region and its crisis center, CONTACT Lifeline, whichprovides the training and oversight for the program. Since Janu-ary 2012, four Moreau Community Center volunteers have un-dergone more than sixty hours of training to become the firstround of volunteers on the hotlines in South Glens Falls. Thesevolunteers have contributed to answering more than three thou-sand crisis calls and chats by the CONTACT Lifeline Center sincethat time. MCC is now looking for a new round of volunteers totrain as Certified Call/Chat Specialists for the fall training that willbegin in September. The Moreau Community Center wanted tomake a difference in their local community after several youthsuicides deeply affected the community in the past three years. As part of the Community Coalition for Family Wellness (CCFW),MCC wanted to expand their reach to people at risk and the fund-ing from OMH was the perfect opportunity to make the crisis hot-line program a reality. The Community Center is currentlyrecruiting volunteers for Certified Call/Chat Specialists. Volun-teers will attend intensive training which will prepare them to fieldcalls which come in over the National Suicide Prevention Lifelineand Crisis Chat. Anyone interested in this challenging and re-warding experience should contact Andrea Bello at 792-6007 orgo to www.fcscr.org and complete the volunteer questionnaireand application. CONTACT Lifeline is nationally accredited byCONTACT USA and is part of the National Suicide PreventionLifeline (www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org) and Crisis Chat(www.crisischat.org).
