Did you know? According to the AmericanBankers Association, manymerchants view debit cardpurchases in the same lightthat they do purchases madewith cash or personal checks. That's an important distinctionfor holiday shoppers to con-sider before making pur-chases, as any items boughton their debit cards may onlybe worthy of store credit in-stead of a full refund shouldsuch items need to be re-turned. Shoppers buying giftsfor friends and family mem-bers should understand that, even if they remember to in-clude gift receipts when wrap-ping gifts, those items mayonly be eligible for store creditif purchased with a debit card. When buying items with creditcards, consumers can with-hold payment if they are notsatisfied with the product. Nosuch option exists when usingdebit cards. In addition tomore restrictive return policies, shoppers who use debit cardsmay incur debit transactionfees, This means they arecharged each time they usetheir debit cards, or such feesmay be triggered when usersuse their card too often. Debitcard users can check theagreement signed when theyopened their accounts to de-termine if they will be sub-jected to debit transactionfees. Holidays shopperswhose purchases are subjectto such fees may want to avoidusing their debit cards duringthe holiday season.

THE HOLIDAY SPENDING SEASON BY THE NUMBERSThe holiday season is significant for a variety of reasons. In addition to its religious significance, the holiday season is when many retailers enjoy their greatest successes. To understand just howmuch business Christmas and Chanukah can bring in, consider the following figures. 20: The percentage of annual sales jewelry stores indicate are made during the month of Decem-ber.150,205: The number of clothing and accessories stores open in the United States as of 2009.27.2: The amount, in billions of dollars, spent during the December 2010 holiday retail season.983: The amount, in millions, of Christmas tree ornaments imported from China between Januaryand September 2011.34.87: The average cost of real Christmas trees as of 2011, Artificial trees sell for an average of$70.55.4.0: The percentage the National Retail Federation expects retail sales to increase this year.2012: The year when holiday retail sales were the weakest since 2008. According MasterCard Ad-visors SpendingPulse, sales in the last two months of 2012 increased by just 0.7 percent from theprevious year. Some financial analysts blamed Hurricane Sandy, an epic storm that caused billionsof dollars in damage along the eastern coast of the United States, for the small increase in consumerspending.24: The percentage of U.S. retail sales made by only the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states.8.4: The percentage growth of online sales from 2011 to 2012. Online sales generally make upabout 10 percent of total holiday business.70: The number, in millions, of poinsettia plants sold in the United States each year.

CREATE A GIFT WRAPPING AREA Nearly as much energy goes into wrapping gifts as purchasingthem. Some people excel at wrapping gifts, while others do notenjoy the task at all. Part of the trouble with gift-wrapping is theroom and tools needed to wrap all of those holiday treasures. Buta gift-wrap station in a corner of the home that is seldom usedcan make wrapping presents any time of the year easier andmore enjoyable.* Find a place to store gift wrap and the tools needed to wrapgifts. Many people find the back of a closet door works perfectly. * Install wire hanger racks so the gift wrap tubes can be storedvertically along the surface of the door.* Install a folding shelf on a hinge, and use that shelf to do yourwrapping. Fold the shelf up when it is not needed and secure itwith a latch at the top. * Hang hooks to store tape and scissors. Attach the scissors tothe hook with a string so they won't go missing. * A basket tucked nearby can house bows and ribbons so thatthey are easily stored until needed.Having the wrapping station so accessible also allows you to takeinventory of supplies and restock when necessary.

A Handy HolidayEntertaining Checklist

One of the best parts aboutholiday entertaining is spend-ing quality time with friendsand family. If youʼre rushingaround trying to cook andprepare everything, your foodmay taste great, but youʼremissing out on a key elementof the season -- together-ness.But the quality of your fooddoesnʼt need to suffer forgreat conversation, say cook-ing experts.“With a little advanced plan-

ning you can have it all at your holiday gathering -- both a delicious, hearty meal, and qualitytime with your friends and family,” says Christy Jordan, author of the new cookbook “ComeHome to Supper,” a collection of budget-conscious, kid-friendly recipes designed for busy fam-iliesJordan is offering this handy checklist for a more fulfilling holiday entertaining season:

Two to Three Days AheadShop for groceries and make dessert.

“If I know I am going to have company, I like to make my dessert a few days ahead of time sowhen itʼs time for dessert, I know all I have to do is cut and serve!” says Jordan.

Jordan points out that refrigerator cakes are wonderful for holiday entertaining, because theycan be made in advance and actually get better as the days go by. They also taste great cold. One to Two Days AheadAssemble the main course. Many entrées can be made ahead of time, such as chilly weather soups and stews. Casserolesalso do very well if assembled ahead of time and then placed covered in the fridge to be bakedjust before supper. You may also consider doubling your recipe and freezing half for later use. Since the seasonis a busy time of year, having extra meals on hand can save you a mid-week headache.

The Big DaySet the table, make the bread, pop the entree on the stove or in the oven. Enjoy!“I like to have as many things done as possible before company arrives so I have more timeto enjoy my guests,” says Jordan.Making most of the meal beforehand can save you valuable minutes just before supper tobake fresh bread -- a true treat and easy to make.  More useful cooking and entertaining tips can be found at www.SouthernPlate.com.Donʼt be stressed by your entertaining schedule. Plan to be relaxed and ready when your com-pany arrives.

as you can see is a beautiful orange, neuter, long haired kitty. He was

outside begging to come in from the cold into this house in Stony Creek.

They would not allow him in the house, nor did they feed him as we were told that he could find food in the field. We had to plead with them

to get him to safety and bring him to us. He is one cool cat and he too

deserves the very best.

These little guys were abandoned in a box at one of our rescues. They are about 7-8 weeks

Understand Odometer Fraud(NAPSI)—While many people think youʼd have to turn back thehands of time to find used cars with their odometers turned back, odometer fraud is, unfortunately, still alive and well. According tonew research from Carfax, more than 190,000 cars have theirodometers rolled back every year, potentially costing victims inexcess of $760 million in lost value and unexpected repairs. To avoid odometer fraud:• Check the vehicleʼs title and compare the mileage there withthe odometer.• Compare the odometerʼs mileage with that on maintenance andinspection documents.• If the vehicle has a traditional mechanical odometer, see if thenumbers are aligned correctly.• Get your used car from a dealership you can trust, such as onerecommended by family or friends.• See if the wear and tear of the vehicle is consistent with themileage shown.•_Have a qualified mechanic check out the odometer and the restof the car before you buy it.• Get a free Carfax Odometer Check.Youʼll be better able to buy a car with more confidence if you visitwww.carfax.com to get Carfax Reports.
