Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Vet-erans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected]. (A)

“Quality Is Our Reputation”25 Years

I’m still impressed at how quickly the days get shorter this time of year. We’re losing daylight at a rate of almost 3 minutes a day! It adds up day after day. There are signs of fall everywhere. The asters are beginning to flower in the meadows. Ajax the dog has begun collecting seed pods in his fur from every thistle and burdock within shouting dis-tance. The cats are QUITE interested in visiting with us overnight now. There’s dew on the windshield and lawn every morning. I’ve noticed the Monarch Butterfly migration is in starting up. The hummingbirds will be gone soon. All these are indications that our glorious growing season will be coming to a frosty end. You would think that this would be a quiet time for gardeners. Not at all!

There are bulbs to plant and it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs that are on season end clearance at the garden centers. Cool weather makes it a great time to catch up on any lingering landscaping projects. Most of us have more time to devote to garden tasks in September. In spring, with all the preparation for the vegetable garden, raking the lawn and other pressing chores, it can be hard to find time to keep up. Rainy spring weather can also make it difficult to accomplish all you wish to. Many of the gardening chores that you’d normally think of doing in spring can actually be taken care of now.

One task that I like to tackle in fall is the dividing and transplanting of perennials. Most of our perennial flowers are just about finished for the season. They go dormant as frost approaches. This is a great time to make improvements and adjustments to our flower-beds and borders. You may have underestimated how large a plant would get and need to move it. You may have some perennials that have become mature and need to be divided. This is a great time to take advantage of cool, crisp “work weather” to get a jump on next spring.

For instance, I’ve got some daylilies and hosta that are in need of dividing. It is a good idea to have the new location ready to receive your transplants before you lift them from their present spot. Dig you holes and add you soil amendments. The most important soil additive is bone meal. Bone meal (as I’ve stated many times before) provides phosphorus to promote a strong, healthy root system and it lasts in the soil for several years. If you have sandy soil, the addition of compost or peat moss will improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture.

Next, slice all the way around the plant you wish to divide with a sharp spade and lift it from the soil. If you’re simply moving it to a new location simply plant it and water it in well. If you need to divide the plant, simply slice the clump apart (as with hosta) or gently pull the clump apart (as with daylilies). Sometimes this seems a bit brutal but remember most perennial plants NEED to be divided every few years to remain healthy and vigorous.

Remember your gardening friends when you’re dividing your perennials. I always set a few small divisions aside to share. My friends share with me so, there’s always something new for all of us to enjoy.

You might not think of it but it’s also a good time to purchase and plant potted perennials. The selection of perennials won’t be as good at the garden center in fall as it is in spring and summer but what there is will undoubtedly be on sale. I’ve got some great bargains by being willing to poke through the perennials at the garden center in fall.

On a different topic: If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get your bird feeding stations ready to welcome out feathered friends. Remember, it’s important to clean you feeders before you fill them with seed. Old, moldy birdseed can make the birds ill and can even kill them. Wash you feeders thoroughly with soap and hot water then rinse. Next, soak your feeder in a tub filled with one part liquid chlorine bleach and ten parts water to sterilize it. Let it dry completely before filling it with seed. If you have any suet feeders, they’ll need to be cleaned as well.

I like to get my feeders up now so that I’ll have a chance to see the migratory birds as they stop by for a snack on their way south. You never know what might show up. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of a female Kinglet at the feeder. It was only about 4” from beak to tail. It is the smallest bird I’ve seen in my yard except for the hummingbird. Thanks for the read.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Southern Saratoga CountyYour Staycation Destination

Our county is a great place for a vacation. We all know that August is Track season, but what can you do after watching the ponies? Perhaps watch some other ponies - such as at the Casino and Raceway, or (for a decidedly different variety) the Double M Rodeo in Malta, or various other equine farms. Then, stop by farms and orchards such as Bowman, Lakeside, Lindsey's, Riverview, and others for fresh produce, or Predel's Ranch in Clifton Park for a va-riety of meats and other goodies. Hayner's has ice cream to go along with freshly picked sweet corn. There are so many nearby places to eat! Next, take a ride down to the water, where various marinas along the Hudson and Mo-hawk Rivers, and inland marine service facilities cater to the boating public. Throw a line in Ballston or Saratoga Lakes, or either of our two Rivers. And don’t forget the Tugboat Roundup is coming up in Waterford on Sept 7-9. Trails and walkways wind throughout our area, passing historic sites such as Grooms Tavern or Historic Lock 19 and scenic vistas such as the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve. For shopping, there's the malls in Clifton Park, plus interesting finds in downtown Ballston Spa, Ballston Lake, Mechanicville and Halfmoon, or at the Exit 8 Plaza (a place called Artique is a local fa-

vorite) among others. Scenic roads wind westward through Charlton, with more farms and restaurants. For history buffs, there's the Saratoga Battlefield, the XO Tower in Mechanicville, the Stillwater Blockhouse and various museums. On September 8 is the Malta 5k run. For more information and "staycation" ideas, visit southernsaratoga.org, calling 518-371-7748 or visiting the Chamber's community information center right behind the big Price Chopper at Exit 9. C'mon in and say hello, and ask for a copy of our newly issued Buyer's Guide and Directory.

Albany, NY (July 31, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Gold-stein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, includ-ing sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the preven-tion of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $46,000 during the first half of this year, an increase of $12,000 or 34% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total

of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our custom-ers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.
