AS TIME GOES BYThis past weekend was pretty hectic for an old codger. A nineti-
eth birthday celebration on April first was pretty exciting, but thesurprise open house the next day really threw me for a loop. Iquickly recovered, however, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest ofthe day.
The amazing part is that it was a complete surprise to me, butwith my poor hearing, things can go on right under my nose andI never pick up on it. Unbeknownst to me, Yvonne had put a no-tice in the Pennysaver/News and when the paper came she hidit so I wouldnʼt see it.
I woke up Saturday morning with the thought that now that mybirthday was over I could get on with the rest of my life. So gettingon with my daily routine, I settled in my chair with paper and cof-fee, completely at ease with my world. My grandson, Casey hadcome in from California the day before to help his old grandpacelebrate and was interviewing and video-taping me for his ge-nealogy search when our youngest son, wife, and daughter fromDownstate burst in the door. From that point, it never stopped.More family came loaded down with cakes and all kinds of good-ies, which were subsequently arranged on the table.
About this time the control tower pushed me in the bedroomand told this poor, bewildered old man to change his clothes.Then she let me read the Pennysaver and it was all revealed, butI sure was unprepared for what ensued.
Friends, neighbors, and many gentle readers stopped by onand off all afternoon and into the next day in some instances.They were all armed with seed packets of every kind and descrip-tion. I should have a bountiful garden this year if they all getplanted. It was a humbling experience, one I shall never forget.
Casey asked me, “How does it feel to be ninety years old,Grandpa?” I answered, “Casey, I donʼt understand it. For ninetyyears nobody paid any attention to me and now Iʼm a celebrity.”Casey said, “Itʼs only for one day, Grandpa, now you have to starton another ninety.”
Well, that put things into proper perspective in a hurry. Iʼm notlooking forward to another ninety, but I am looking forward to an-other seasonʼs garden and maybe if Iʼm lucky, several more afterthat. Iʼm finally getting the knack of it! Now if we can just get ridof that snow.
As usual, I jumped the gun a bit in my planting downstairs. Iʼvegot two flats of peppers up in good shape, but I donʼt know whatIʼm going to do with them until planting time. I have, however, re-frained from starting my main crop of tomatoes. I will start themin a few days and if my timing is right, they will be ready to coin-cide with Mother Natureʼs schedule.
One thing Iʼm really looking forward to is trying out my newMantis Rototiller. Yes, Yvonne got me a new Mantis for my birth-day. She hesitated and questioned me about the wisdom of buy-ing a brand new tiller at my age. But why the heck not? Not onlythat but itʼs got a five year warrantee and I hope to see it lapse.My old Troy-built pony ran well, but it was a devil for me to start.The new Mantis is light weight and starts easily.
At times, Gentle Reader, youʼve probably noticed that I com-plain somewhat about my relationship with Old Ironsides. On re-flection, I ask myself, “What would I do without her?” Shewatches me like a hawk and I canʼt get away with anything. Iʼmalways getting into situations that I canʼt seem to cope with. Shesees me struggling, steps in, and in no time gets me out of an-other dilemma. She hovers in the background pulling strings andthis is good. When sheʼs not there is when things get dicey. AmI complaining? Not a bit. How do you think I got to be ninety?
