A Life Less Healthy: Tobaccoʼs Daily Toll(NAPSI)—When people think of the consequences of smoking and to-bacco use, often-fatal diseases such as Stage IV lung cancer most com-monly come to mind. But there is another side to tobacco use.

About 8.6 million people in the U.S. are currently living with tobacco-re-lated illnesses. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema and oral cancer can bedebilitating illnesses—illnesses that can rob people of opportunities andthat can affect their daily lives.

For many of these people, tobacco use means no longer being able toenjoy eating, be physically active or spend quality time with family.

Thomas Cook, 51, knows the effects firsthand. Cook started smoking atage 13 and was diagnosed at 38 with Stage IV larynx cancer.

“When you get sick from using tobacco, your whole life changes. Thingswill never and can never be the same. Not one day goes by that I donʼtthink about cancer. All I have to do is look in the mirror and there it is,” saidCook, who appeared in the Emmy-nominated truth youth smoking preven-tion campaign commercial, “Singing Cowboy,” in 2006.

Christine Brader smoked for almost 28 years until she was diagnosedwith oral cancer. Brader, 48, survived three bouts of oral cancer in threeyears. She lost 65 pounds from not being able to eat and has had moresurgeries than she can count. She lost her pets because she was too sickto care for them. She also lost her house, her job and in her words, “myteeth, my jaw, my looks.”

New Cancer Medicines Offer A Prescription For Hope(NAPSI)—Thereʼs hopeful news for those fighting cancer. A recordnumber of medicines (887) to help fight a variety of cancers are nowin clinical trials or awaiting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ap-proval for patient use.

According to a recent report from the Pharmaceutical Research andManufacturers of America (PhRMA), thatʼs well over double the num-ber in the pipeline just six years ago, when there were fewer than 400medicines in development for cancer.

One promising development, said Garry Neil, M.D., corporate vicepresident of science and technology at Johnson & Johnson, is the in-creased understanding about the many ways a tumor can protect andfeed itself by co-opting the bodyʼs own mechanisms.

Other new developments in cancer research include a better un-derstanding of the key role that cancer stem cells play in resistanceto chemotherapy, and the interplay between cancer cells and the sup-porting tissue that surrounds them, said Scott Waldman, M.D., Ph.D.,of the Kimmel Cancer Center. Biomarkers, Waldman added, are in-creasing researchersʼ ability to predict and to understand the bodyʼsresponse to new therapies.

Dr. Waldman was recognized this year by the PhRMA Foundationfor his breakthrough work on colorectal cancer. He and Dr. Neil alsopointed to advanced gene sequencing that is revealing the geneticbasis of cancer and leading to opportunities for personalized medi-cine.

Combination therapies, which were so successful in fightingHIV/AIDS, also represent an important step in cancer treatment, saidDr. Neil. Regulatory agencies, he added, are recognizing the need tosimplify the testing of multiple medicines in development in order torealize this potential breakthrough.

“Unprecedented insights into how cancer cells develop, grow andspread are providing new targets and new ways of attacking the dis-ease,” said John J. Castellani, PhRMAʼs president and CEO. “Rapidlyadvancing technologies and the commitment of researchers to fol-lowing new clues are providing hope.”

Asked where we now stand in the battle against cancer, Dr. Neilsaid, “We are hopefully moving to the beginning of the end for manycancers.”

Beliefs About Healthy Lifestyle Clash With Behavior(NAPSI)—Youʼre never too young to reduce your risk of stroke-andyou may need to start by changing your lifestyle.

According to a recent American Stroke Association survey:• Nine out of 10 Americans between ages 18 and 24 believe theyʼreliving healthy lifestyles and want to live well into their late 90s. Yetmost eat too much fast food, drink too many alcoholic and sugar-sweetened beverages and engage in other behaviors that could putthem at risk for stroke.• Most of those surveyed said they want to maintain quality healththroughout their lives. Yet one-third donʼt believe engaging in healthybehaviors now could affect their risk for stroke in the future.• Eight in 10 people between ages 25 and 44 years old also believetheyʼre engaging in healthy lifestyles and hope to live to be 90 andbeyond. While theyʼre more likely to engage in healthy behaviors than18- to 24-year-olds, they could also improve.

“This survey shows the dangerous disconnect that many youngAmericans have about how their behaviors affect their risks for strokeand other cardiovascular diseases,” said Ralph Sacco, M.D., neurol-ogist and president of the American Heart Association/AmericanStroke Association. “Starting healthy behaviors at a young age is crit-ical to entering middle age in good shape.”

People who make healthy lifestyle choices lower their risk of havinga first stroke by as much as 80 percent compared with those whodonʼt, according to the American Heart Association. Healthy behaviorsinclude eating a low-fat diet high in fruits and vegetables, drinking al-cohol and sugar-sweetened beverages only in moderation, exercisingregularly, maintaining a healthy body weight and not smoking.

“Young adults need to make a connection between healthy behav-iors and a healthy brain and heart,” Sacco said. “People need to thinkin terms of striving for ideal health as well as surviving and thriving ifa stroke occurs. An easier way to remember this is: Strive, Survive,Thrive.”

Wein and Fisher Exhibit to Open at Willows BistroPhotographers, friends and brothers-in-law Jerry Wein and BobFisher will be guests of honor at an artistsʼ reception at WillowsBistro, 3749 Main St., Warrensburg, on Friday, June 10, from 7to 8:30 p.m. The public is invited to visit with the artists about theirwork. Their aptly-named exhibit is titled “Darkness and Light:Adirondack Starscapes and Landscapes”. Fisherʼs passion lies in the night sky. As a boy, he was introducedto star-gazing by his father and uncles. According to a biograph-ical note, “He first saw the superbly dark skies of the Adirondackson summer camping trips, and at age 15 he built his own tele-scope.” This fascination led to experimentation with astrophotog-raphy in his teens. After a multifaceted career, in 1991 he becamea year-round resident of Olmstedville and has had more time todevote to photography, which includes botanical photographsregularly published in “Wildflower,” the magazine of the Lady BirdJohnson Wildflower Center. His main focus remains astropho-tography. Wein, also a self-taught photographer, for many years worked

primarily with black and white portraits, and also has enjoyedsnapping candid shots of unusual human interaction. He divideshis free time between the Hudson Valley and Paradox, NY, andfor decades has been an avid explorer of the Adirondack wilder-ness, which enhanced his interest in photographing the fine detailof our North Country landscape. The Yaddo Garden Association Celebrates its 20th AnniversaryBy: Barbara Hefter, YGA member

The Yaddo Gardens were originally established in 1899 and were a giftfrom Spencer Trask to his wife, Katrina. The design is based on Italianclassical gardens and contains four oblong beds of roses. The fountainpool on the great lawn directly opposite the mansion contains the statueof Dawn being awakened by nymphs. Marble statues representing thefour seasons stand guard over the rose beds. The statue, Christalan,stands alone in the pine woods and serves as a memorial to the Traskchildren. Christalan represents youth, chivalry and victory over mortality. The sundial on the balcony above the terraces in inscribed with a mes-

sage specifically for Katrina Trask by her friend, poet Henry Van Dyke. Itreads: “ Time is too slow for those who wait; too swift for those who fear;too long for those who grieve; too short for those who rejoice; but for thosewho love, Time is Eternity.” Beyond the sundial stands the 38 column terra cotta pergola with its mag-nificent climbing roses. The pergola was completely restored in 2009thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Yaddo Garden Association. Situated behind the pergola is the rock garden with its many shade lovingplants as well as stone fountains emptying into a rill which flows to a lowerpond. Back in Katrina Traskʼs time, this was a sunny spot but the maturingof trees over the years have resulted in the garden now being a mostlyshade garden. The Yaddo gardens were the victim of neglect and severe vandalism in

the 1970ʼs and 1980ʼs. Charles Wait had a sundial made for Yaddo in1990, to replace the one that had been stolen during earlier vandalism.Charles gave the sundial in memory of his father, Newman E. (Pete) WaitJr., who had served for many years as Chairman for the Corporation ofYaddo. In 1990, while at the dedication of the new sundial and the plant-ing of several rose bushes in the garden in memory of her husband, JaneA. Wait realized how few rose bushes were in bloom in the garden eventhough it was June. After a year of planning and recruiting help from herfriends, in December, 1991, the Yaddo Garden Association was formed.Jane Wait was the YGA Founder and original President. In the spring of1992 the gardens were tidied and 350 new rose bushes were planted. For the past 20 years the Yaddo Garden Association (YGA) volunteers

have tended to the gardens and have restored the historic integrity KatrinaTrask had envisioned. The many volunteers spend hours planting, weed-ing, watering, deadheading, raking and giving tender loving care to thehundreds of plants in the entrance garden, the rose garden and the rockgarden. The YGAʼs success in restoration and continuous maintenance is due tothe dedication of its many volunteers over the years, as well as the supportof the surrounding community and the Corporation of Yaddo. The YGAhas received assistance from many local nurseries and businesses as wellas a partnership with the local BOCES horticulture students, high schooland college students, and Girl Scout Troops. A major goal of the YGA was the restoration of the 38 column pergola

which separates the rose garden from the rock garden. After years offundraising efforts including four Yaddo Mansion open houses, a quilt showand raffle, sale of a cookbook and numerous garden parties, the pergolarestoration was completed and the new terra cotta pergola was celebratedwith a dedication ceremony in 2009.The Yaddo gardens are a gem in Saratoga Springs. The gardens are

open daily, year-round from 8 a.m. to dusk, free of charge. The YGA con-ducts docent-led tours of the gardens every Saturday and Sunday frommid-June through Labor Day and Tuesdays during the thoroughbred rac-ing season. Tours are at 11 a.m., are $5 per person and begin at the mainfountain pool on the great lawn. Tours last approximately one hour. Do-cents share the history of the Trask family, of Yaddo and the gardens. Spe-cial group tours may be arranged at dates and times convenient forgroups. Power point presentations are also available to local groups whoare interested in a program on the Yaddo gardens. 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the Yaddo Garden Association. To

celebrate this historic event, a “Yaddo Garden Party” will be held on Sun-day, July 10, 2011, 2 – 5 p.m. Proceeds will support future YGA work inthe gardens. Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson are the HonoraryChairpersons of the event. Garden tours will be available and a dedicationceremony and planting of the newly developed ʻMarylou Whitney Roseʼwill highlight the occasion.
