Congratulations Class of 2019 We did it Birchwood. Well, they did it, but it’s safe to say that the community of Birchwood played, at least a small part, in the choices and decisions these students took in getting themselves where they are today. The old saying, “It takes a community to raise a child,” is true in Birchwood for many reasons. These include our book buddies coming in and reading with many of these graduates as young students and watching them grow up, remembering those times when they were little, being able to help out area residents with yard clean-up and making memories with that, being welcomed at the Cafe the morning of graduation when your whole class comes for breakfast, and more. In Birchwood we build memories, and hope our youth remember that there’s always friendly faces waiting at home. On Friday, May 21, 2019 twenty students graduated from Birchwood High School including: 17 from Birchwood High School (Traditional), two from Birchwood Blue Hills Charter School, and one from Bobcat Virtual Academy. Taylor Widiker was named class of 2019 Valedictorian and Taylor Robotka was named Salutatorian. Honors students included: Taylor Widiker, Taylor Robotka, Trenton Stanley, Tyler Lee, and Sophia Trude. Superintendent Diane Johnson welcomed the guests, and speeches were given by Taylor Robotka, Hunter Block, and Mady Schultz. The Band, under the direction of Jenny Landes performed the musical selection, “The Greatest Showman” and the choir, under the direction of Tom Johnson, performed the song, “The Water is Wide”. Students also received more than $75000 in scholarships. Diplomas were presented by School Board members Jessica Downey and Becca Hrdlicka. A full list of scholarships can be found on page 23. Welcome to Summer in Birchwood and Area Communities Have you ever thought about summer in Birchwood from the opposite perspective? If you are a summer resident, or just visiting, what does the rest of the year look like in Birchwood? How does your visit impact the community? If you are a year round resident, what would the Birchwood area be like without our summer residents and visitors? No matter how you look at it, without each other this place would not be what it is. The celebrations, the friendships, the atmosphere, this is what makes our community great. Throughout this issue, you will find out about many of the area summer events. From Birchwood’s Bluegill Fest, to Mikana’s Biggest Little Parade, from the 4th of July Fireworks celebrations, to the special music at many area businesses and resorts, we encouage you to try something new in the area and meet even more friends from near and far! Read on and we hope to see you soon! A Lesson in Confidence. 2019 Birchwood Bluegill Fest Queen Candidates, Taylor Good, Kaitelyn Cayzer, and Katrina Meyer learn skills in confidence and how to dress to impress at Two Sister’s Boutique in Rice Lake as part of their candidacy. by Diane Johnson, Superintendent Summer is here and so it the district’s incredible summer school program! Welcome to all current and new families! Our summer school program is open to all community youth PK-12, whether your child is a district resident or not. If you have family members visiting for the summer and would like them to attend a day, a week, or six weeks of summer school, please call us at 715-354-3471 and let usknow.Weofferreadingandmathclassesaswellasenrichmentclasses such as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), wizarding, paper mache, science safari, and legos, to name a few. Classes run June 10th-June 28th and July 8-July 26th from 8:30am-12:30pm. Fridays are reserved for interesting and educationalfield trips. Breakfast (served at 9:15am) and lunch(served at 12:00pm) are both provided free of charge for any child up to age 18 and also to adults at the low-cost of $4.00 per meal. Community youth do not have to be enrolled in summer school to take advantage of a free breakfast or lunch. Stop in, we would love to have you and provide a tour if you are interested! Looking back to May 3rd, the school district was gifted, politics aside, with a visit from Governor Tony Evers, Senator Janet Bewley, RepresentativeJamesEdming, andfiveschooldistricts(Webster,Northwood, Hayward, Mercer, and Turtle Lake) that face the samefinancialchallengesasBirchwood.Asmanyofyouknow,Birchwood is a zero-aided district, with a revenue limit less than it was twenty years ago. Revenue to the district comes primarily from property taxes and open enrollments. The challenge is Birchwood property taxes are the thirteenth lowest (355 out of 368 K-12 school districts) in Wisconsin due to a low mill rate (6.35). Only a community supported referendum can raise the revenue limit and the district is exploring the possibility of a referendum in April 2020. With that said, a goal of inviting the Governor and legislators was sharing the innovative and creative ways our team works with the community and the greater community to meet the needs of students. A second goal was sharing the unique funding challengesofBirchwood, alongwiththefiveschooldistrictguests, who are low aided or no aided districts with low mill rates. After an invigorating round-table discussion, Birchwood may be working withSenatorBewley’sofficetoco-authorabillthatindeedbringssupport to low aided/low mill rate districts. This will be a long process with hopefully some positive results. Stay tuned!

Our office staff is in during the summerworking to finish thisyear and get ready for next school year. Feel free to email me at [email protected], call me at 715-354-3471, or stop in to share your ideas and thoughts. Additionally, if you are a visitor to the great Northwoods, please give me a call or stop in. I would enjoy showing you our little school and meeting you.

Oh, the Places You May Go!--Community TheaterBy: Junior Jenna Johnson The Birchwood School District isofftoawildandwackystarttothesummer as the community theater begins rehearsing Seussical! K-12 youth members, community members, and adults of all ages have been allowed to participate in this musical under the direction of Terri Morse, who has been working hard to ensure the play runs smoothly while creating a fun and safe environment for all. ThisBroadwaymusical, whichwasfirst released in 2000, isbased on the wonderful works of Dr. Seuss, and will include classic stories such as Horton Hears a Who, Horton Hatches an Egg, Miss Gertrude McFuzz, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and many more. Seussical aims to inspire audience members of all ages through the main ideas, “Oh the things you can think if you’re willing to try!” and “A person’s a person no matter how small!” The musical is set to be performed on the last weekend of July. The cast hopes to see a crowd of family and friends at the performance and assures all listeners that the play will be fun, silly, and inspiring!

Birchwood Volunteer Fire Department NewsBy: Junior Jenna Johnson The Birchwood Volunteer Fire Department has been working hard within the community on many tasks, such as building a new central location for their operations to take place. Although there is no set start date, the team aims to begin constructing their newfirehouseby2020,astheyalreadyhavealottobeginonasofficialbuildingplansaredrawnup.Theseplanshavealreadybeenapproved by the state and by various other teams in order to ensure their safety and stability. To achieve the goal of starting in 2020, the department has been working on fundraising and campaigning throughout Birchwood and the nearby townships and villages. They are currently taking donations, as one private donor has generously agreed to a $500,000 matching grant. The rest of the money will be acquired by other businesses and private donors or will be approved during township meetings. Building a new space for Birchwood’s Fire Department will create a functional and safe environment, as the existing structure is too small for both trucks and people, and the team is barely able to keep all its equipment stored in the area available. A brand new spacewouldallowthedepartmenttohavetheirownoffices, ratherthan temporarily renting spaces, have access to air suction, which would create healthier breathing air, and have more room for trucks, people, and equipment. Not only is the Birchwood Fire Department working hard on their new station, but they are also celebrating summer fun within thecommunity.DuringBluegillFest, theFirefighter’sAnnualRafflewilltakeplace, whichisanopportunitytosupportthefirefightersand win some lovely prizes. The winner will be announced on July 31st around three o’clock in the afternoon. There will also be an openhouseduringthistimeframewithtoursandrootbeerfloats!Thankyouforallyoudo, firefighters! ATV Safety Training Class Conducted in Birchwood Nine Birchwood students have successfully completed the six hour ATV safety class required by the DNR for anyone 12 years of age as well as those born after December 31, 1987 who want to operateanATVinWisconsinonpublictrails.Conductedbycertifiedvolunteer instructor Dave Zemaitis of the Birchwood Bobcat Riders, the students learned the rules and regulations involved in driving an ATV as well as being a safe and ethical rider. Students were required topassafinaltestinordertoreceivetheircertification.

Birchwood Bobcat Riders Urge ATV/UTV Riders To Drive Safely According to the Wisconsin DNR, as of May 31st there are 353,281 registered ATV’s and UTV’s in the state, up 5% from the same time last year. Along with the increasing number of machines is the fact that the machines themselves have grown in size, with someunitsmorethanfivefeetwide,weighingwellover1000poundsand capable of carrying four or more passengers. However, the trails they use in many places are the same trails originally designed for use by snowmobiles which have a maximum width of approximately 48”. As a result, operators need to be extra cautious, keeping to the right side of the trail (especially on curves) and keeping their speed under control. In addition, some of the trails in the Birchwood area are connected by gravel roads that can produce a lot of dust, much to the displeasure of area homeowners when a group of ATV/UTV riders pass by at higher than posted speed limits. Finally, operators should always be on the lookout for wildlife, including adult deer and fawns, turtles and other animals that may be on or crossing the trail. This is especially true at night when it is easy to “overrun” the headlights.

August 15 Meeting to Gather Public Input to Fisheries Management Plan for Chetac and Birch Lakes The Wisconsin DNR and the Big Chetac and Birch Lakes Association (BCABLA) are sponsoring a meeting August 15 from 6-8 p.m. in the Birchwood School commons to provide input for development of a Fisheries Management Plan for Chetac and Birch lakes. The public is encouraged to attend. Max Wolter and CraigRoberts,WisconsinDNRfisheriesbiologistsforSawyerandWashburn Counties, respectively, will lead discussions along with a meeting facilitator. Max and Craig will also present data from recentpopulationandfishingsurveysonbothlakes.Participantswillbeabletoexpresstheirpreferencesforthefisherytheywouldliketoexperience.Althoughspecificregulationswillnotbeaddressedat the meeting, the data gathered will inform future proposals and decisions on such regulations. Information from the meeting will be combined with remote surveys of those unable to attend to contribute to the development of a comprehensive management plans for the lakes.

Now this is Sprummer...Spring and Summer all at once as we have decided Spring is so short, why even acknowledge it. I love it. *Lotsofimportantdatestuff...sogetthosecalendarsandacupand sit a spell. First of all..the July potluck will NOT be on the 4th. We assume you have other plans. It will be a week later on the 11th. So chill those leftovers and bring ‘em with you and see you at 11:30. * Our scholarships this year went to 2 special ladies: Callahan Eva Harrington, graduating from the Birchwood Blue Hills Charter School, and Alexandra Jo Schott from the High School. Both will attendCommunityColleges andprepare formedicalfields. Wecongratulateall2019graduatesandwishyoujoyandfulfillmentofyour dreams. Blessings always! * The mirrors are in and the classes are loving them. So much brighter down there and the outside shows more in. Thanks to all of the community members who helped this project to happen: Ed’s Pit Stop; American Legion; Bluegill Bar; Just Rite; Greeners Lumber; NorthLakes Community clinic, yoga members; line dancing group, John & Kathy Seever and Sandy Engler. Thank you all! We have such a special facility...and if you have not ever been here...whazzup? By the way...remember that ‘Pizza Party” I mentioned last month? Well we had to change the date but if you called to let us know you were coming, you found that out and hope you were there. Your chance to see how awesome this place is..sitting on the shore of Little Birch Lake in downtown Birchwood. Do stop in some time and have a cool one on our deck, overlooking that awesome lake. Someone will be here to join you if you come before 1pm, or call and see if a happening is happening in the afternoon. As much as we would like to send out a search party for you...we just don’t have the time. Our membership is way over 100 now so someone you know is a member here. * So its that time of year when we fun it at our festival parades. The 2nd one is the BluGill Festival on July 20th...we will be in that parade...and lest you think we will be in wheelchairs or walkers...you better come see that we are the “young and restless” we have always been. Many of our members are probably younger than you are! * Our Memorial Weekend bakesale was very successful and thank you all who baked or bought. These fundraisers help us give those scholarshipsandmakethosetripsyouliketotakemoreaffordable.Speaking of trips. Nel has that Fall trip almost set to go and it is a winner...like all of her trips are...but she says..this one is an Award Winning one....so be sure your name is on that list in the book. * Hope you were reserved for Dining at 5 this month on the 28th. It was ham and cheesy potatoes with all the trimmings and one of Becky’s amazing desserts. Always a full house and full tums. * Our hostesses this month were Judy Hokanson, Barb Nylen andNelfilledinforthegalthatcouldnotbewithus.Manywerevery pleased with the wonderful plants that were door prizes. Many of you may be familiar of these wonderful facilities on South Street across from Farm and Fleet. One is Memory Care and the other Assisted Living. They are Privately owned and have about 20 rooms each for residents. They are set up to be like living at home and as close to that style as possible. Many volunteers come to provide book, bible and other studies and classes. Anyone is welcome to tour the facility but if you call first,someonewillbetheretoansweranyquestionyoumayhave...715-236-7211. They do have openings. There are a total of 31 facilities throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. There were many June Birthdays. Mike Houy’s was the day of potluck so we sang Happy Birthday with a bit more gusto...but somebody thinks we are all bases..(editorially speaking). * Tai Chi is back and will be even better with the new mirrors. Probably on Thursdays but call for clarity and to reserve. Price will be established by # of participants. Same director as previously. * Our treasurer will be moving in August so her position will be open. Please give consideration to becoming Treasurer, if only for the rest of the year. Banking is done right here in Birchwood and extremely good records have been kept. Call the center and leave your name and President Mike or Treasurer Ruth will contact you...and thanks!! * Well I sure hope to see you at Mikana’s amazing Biggest Little July 4th parade or at our amazing Bluegill Festival here in Birchwood the weekend of July 19th. Big awesome events for all ages. We do live in paradise up here and all you need to prove that is to watch the news. So if you are there..please say “Hi” cuz a gazillion of you know who I am and Lord willing...I’ll be there.Chow

New Club Alert---Birchwood PickleballBy: Freshman AJ Jones Have you ever heard of pickleball? If not, do not fret because pickleballisdefinedas“apaddlesportthatcombineselementsofbadminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymerball, similartoaWiffleBall, overanet.”ItisalsooneofAmerica’s fastest-growing sports! If you think that sounds like fun, then you will be pleased to know that Birchwood is trying to get their very own pickleball club right here! Thanks to the Birchwood Lion’s Club and the Dowd Foundation, Birchwood is receiving a newly renovated tennis court and they have agreed to add on a single stripe for pickleball as well. Pickleball is a great sport to play with friends and family. It is also a fun way to get a workout in. But the best news is that all will be welcome to join Birchwood’s future pickleball club, regardless of skill or age! The only requirement is tennis shoes to be able to participate. If you are new to pickleball, instructions and support will be provided amongst arrival. However, if you want to practice against more skilled people in the meantime, Spooner and Cameron also have weekly pickleball sessions. If you are interested in signing up and being on a list, you can contact Bonita Basty at [email protected] to let her know. She is looking forward to getting the pickleball club started as soon as the tennis court is finished. If you want to learn more about the sport, you can always watch how to play on youtube and look up the USA Pickleball Association website for extra rules, information, videos, and strategies.

Trinity Lutheran Church Members Give Back Nearly 20 church members from Birchwood’s Trinity Lutheran Church gathered together at Woodlawn Cemetery in Birchwood, WI on June 2nd to clean headstones. Bob Hayes, a member of Trinity and the cemetery’s sexton, demonstrated how to carefully clear gravesite markers of the lichens, pollen, mold and moss that had collected for decades. For several hours volunteers used soft brushes, wooden skewers, mild cleansers, and putty knives to renew more than 60 markers and make them legible once more. Trinity Lutheran Church practices the mission to “Live as He lived. Be third” inferred from Luke 10:27. This means putting Godfirstandtheneedsofothersinfrontofourown.Eachmonth, scheduled on the third Sunday, Trinity’s congregation participates in an opportunity to serve the community. Business Highlight---Fred Thomas ResortBy: Senior Adam Robotka “Perpetually New!” That has been the slogan at the Fred Thomas Resort for almost 100 years. The resort was firstestablishedin1925by two locals named Connie and Fred. After three more ownership changes, the resort is currently owned by Ted Telitz and Dan Herscher. Since the resort began in 1925, it is most known for its everchanging resort environment which seems to correspond nicely with its “perpetually new” persona. Nowadays, the resort is perhaps best viewed as a cozy lake retreat. Both Ted and Dan have had many years of business experience, and their collective attention to detail is what really sets the Fred Thomas Resort apart. In addition, the resort prides itself on its amazing customer service that everyone can come to expect when they walk through the front door. However, you don’t need to take our word for it, just check out all the reviews on Google, as the resort has an average rating of 4.8 stars out of 5 with comments, such as “The lakehereisverybeautifulandthestaffwereveryfriendly.Cleanfacilitiesandalotoffunstufftodoveryfunrecreationroom”and“Great service. Cabins and great. Covered boat dock. Great people. On the best lake around. Beautiful.” Thenewspaperstaffcaughtupwithapreviousownerwhostated,“FredThomasResortwastheveryfirstresortsinBirchwoodtohavea connection to electricity. This was because they made a powerplant just for the resort! As their expertise and knowledge has increased over the decades of being involved in the business, their slogan has stayed the same, “Perpetually New” and it’s something broadcasted all throughout the resort. While the resort may embody the “Perpetually New” motto, most of the customers that come and spend part of their summer there are actually repeat customers. This fact goes to show how the resort has fostered great loyalty amongst its customer base. That loyalty is returned tenfold, as it is obvious when talking to both the previous and the past owners how grateful they are for their customers and how much they love helping people have a pleasant and relaxing vacation. If you are interested in booking a stay at the Fred Thomas Resort, please call 715- 354-3761 or visit www.fredthomasresort.com

Starting Off the Summer with a New Skate ParkBy: Junior Elora Repman Nothing says summer like hanging out with your friends outside. One of the greatest places to accomplish this is the brand new skatepark, and soon to be new tennis courts, in the village of Birchwood. Thefinaldecisionfortheskateparks’futurewasmadebythevillage board after a generous donation from the Dowd Foundation. The construction for the new park started in April and ended on June first.NorthwestBuilderswereresponsiblefortheactualconstructionof the skate park. This company will also be building the new tennis courts in the near future. The Dowd Foundation also donated the funds to Birchwood so that they could build brand new tennis courts. The village board decidedthatthecolorsshouldreflectthoseoftheBirchwoodschool. This new tennis courts will be painted a vibrate maroon with grey spread out within the courts. This project will be completed at the end of July. Any money left over after the main construction of the skate park and tennis courts will be used for maintaining the two areas. These new parks can be found by the school along the back of the playground. It is free to get in and anyone is welcome to use them. So come down to Birchwood to check out these brand new areas. A special thanks goes to the Dowd Foundation for donating the money for the renewal of the skate park and tennis courts.

Birchwood Student Lobbies on Capitol HillBy Sophomore Lucas Lehnert During the month of June, I was privileged with the opportunity to take a trip to the one and only Washington D.C. for a week. I experienced many different things while I was there, and I am here to share them with you now. As for the reason I went to D.C., I was interested in learning more about climate change through an international conference, but most importantly I was able to lobbydifferentmembersoftheUSCongressforactiononclimatechange. The conference I attended was showcased by Citizens Climate Lobby, or better known as CCL. CCL is an international environmental group that trains and supports volunteers to build relationshipswiththeirelectedrepresentativesinordertoinfluenceclimate policy. Through many breakout sessions at the conference, my knowledge about climate science has grown tremendously. From listening to young Americans and those around the world concerned withthistopictolobbyingonCapitolHillforthefirsttime, thiswasan amazing experience. I was able to meet and voice my concerns withSeanDuffy’s(R-Wisconsin)staff,myUSCongressmanfromthe7thDistrict,aswellasAnnWagner’sstaff(R-Missouri),andDanny Davis (D-Illinois), a US Congressman from the Chicago area. Our local Birchwood CCL chapter is very active, and another member, Linda Herscher, attended with me, along with my mom. The reason I am so involved with our local CCL is because we are alreadyseeingtheeffectsofclimatemorerapidlythanexpected, and I care about our earth and my future. It’s no secret that climate changebringsaboutdroughts, floods, heatwaves, extremeweatherevents, and sea level rise in more numbers and increasingly greater intensity. The cost to our nation alone to clean all this up will have youfeel theeffectsof this ifwedonotstart todosomethingtolower carbon emissions into our atmosphere. In twelve years time, theseeffectswillbeirreversibleonceourglaciersmelttoacertainpoint and the amount of carbon in our atmosphere warms with a deteriorating ozone layer eventually heating up our planet.

Thankfully, we are a smart nation, and I am hoping that the newly introduced bipartisan Bill H.R. 763: The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act will get passed by the House and Senate. Then our country can start putting money into more GREEN INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY instead of continually funding all the help people need to clean-up the preventable more intense disasters, floods, fires, anddroughtswehaveseen.Thisbillwillgradually reduce carbon emissions in the US by 40% in the next twelve years and save almost 300,000 lives currently caused by bad air quality and other health issues created by these disasters. 2.1 million new jobs will be created, and the fee created by this bill will be returned to the American people making this bill revenue neutral. It’s a win-win for us, our future, and our planet. According to the recent Luntz Global Partners poll, 75% of Republicans under the age of 40 support this legislation, and 4 out of 5 voters want Congress to put politics aside to reach a bipartisan solution on this topic. I agree as this is an urgent matter. The goal is for the US to be 90% carbon free by 2050. During our trip, we were also able to secure a tour inside the White House, get a lecture inside the actual Supreme Court, take a student tour of Georgetown University, attend mass in the National Shrine’s Basilica, and sit in on proceedings in the House of Representatives. We were also able to walk down the National Mall to see the Washington Monument and memorials from the Korean and Vietnam Wars as well as WWII. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History had a large, new exhibit called, “Deep Time”, thathighlightedtheeffectsofourchangingclimateandishighlyrecommended. I a m t h a n k f u l I was able to attend my first international conference. I hope you feel this strongly about something that you are able to visit our nation’sCapitoltofightfor change like I did. If you are interested in joining our Birchwood CCL Chapter, please contact Dan Herscher at [email protected].

Receipts from the voluntary subscriptions are applied to postage, material and printing costs, donations of any amount are appreciated.

The Birchwood News is a great way to improve communication between the school and the community and has cre-ated many educational opportunities for the students at Birchwood School. In the Jungle I Have Found Youth entering grades PK-6 have been enjoying learning and enrichment through the Birchwood Community Summer School Program. This program is open to community youth and runs from June 10-28 and July 8-26. It runs from 8:30-12:30 with breakfast served at 9:15 and lunch served at noon. Our young friends entering grades PK-1 enjoy a morning of educational activities and fun. They have plenty of time to play. Youth entering grades 2-6 have a session of reading and a session of math to keep up on their skills and then have 2 enrichment sessions. So far they have had time to explore the FabLab making vinyl cut stickers and utilizing the laser engraver. They have made weaving buddies and explored summer fun. They learned how to decorate cupcakes and also learned the many ways to make noodles. There is something fun for everyone. If you’d like to come, just show up in the morning and we’ll get you set. You can also call the school at 715-354-3471. We hope to see you in session 2! There are also classes for youth in grades 7-12, call the school to learn more.

A Great 2018-19 School Year at the BBHCS by Jenny Landes, Advisor It is always uplifting to look back at the school year that just ended and be amazed at all of the fun learning opportunities at the BBHCS! This was our 10th year as a school that provides a project based learning option for students in grades 7-12 - and we’re proud of the BBHCS! Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Todd Brunclik and I were founding advisors and JeffStanleyandFrankHelquistwerefoundingadministratorsofthis innovative charter school. From day one our mission has been to create a learning community of students ready to contribute to a global society. We believe that by giving students ownership of their education and providing unique experiences in and out of the classroom, we can accomplish that mission. Student-led projects that connect to learning targets and require the student to create something to demonstrate their learning are central to our school. The Birchwood School Ended the Year with Great FunBy: Junior Elora Repman To mark the end of the 2018-2019 school year, Birchwood School took its students on a variety of fun and exciting field trips.Thehigh school students got active at Birchwood’s own Tomahawk Scout Reservation. Meanwhile, the middle school students had some fun on the water at the St.Croix River.

Finally, the elementary students celebrated the end of a great year by traveling to the Jack Links Aquatic Center. Perhaps one of the most successful excursions was the high school students’ trip to the Tomahawk Scout Reservation. Students werespecificallyaskedtostepoutof theircomfortzoneandtrysomethingnew, astherearemanyexcitingopportunitiesofferedatthis unique camp. For example, the scout camp boasts of an epic high ropes course that is meant to test one’s fear of heights. There isalsoafiretower,a“FlyingSquirrel”contraction, aclimbingwall, mountainbiking, archery, discgolfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more!. To make this trip even better, halfway through the day the students enjoyed an amazing lunch from Ed’s Pit Stop courtesy of the High School Conservation Club. When asked about the trip, student Kayla Deroussea said, “I loved the high ropes and how the people there were so helpful and helped us with how to put the belts on to go and climb the ropes.”It was a day full of fun and the high school can’t wait to do it again next year. Another special trip that took place was the elementary students’ day at the Jack Links Aquatic Center in Minong. They attended an Aquatic Center as an AODA event for Wellness Day. This is a special day for the students because it encourages them to get physically active and helps them learn about safety and the importance of eating healthy...all while having a ton of fun, of course! The event was planned by the Birchwood School’s Special Education Director, Sonja Rogers. After all the fun students had, they hope to do the trip again in the future. Birchwood School would like to thank all of the businesses and volunteers who make these spectacular end of the year trips possible!

The Final Swing of the School Golf Season By: Senior Adam Robotka Wehave, unfortunately, reachedthefinalswingoftheschoolgolfseason. Over the entire season, the team placed 1st in two meets and placed 2nd in the remaining 6 golf meets. However, the team was oftennecktoneckwiththeircompetitionuntilthefinalstrokeofthe eighteenth hole during all of their meets. This year was quite a nail-biting season, as the team went on to compete for the conference championship. They had three all-conference players, they include Matthew Marcinske (Junior), Adam Robotka (Junior), and Trent Stanley (Senior). After the all-conference play, they competed at regionals but fell short as a team. However, Matthew Marcinske ended up qualifying for sectionals, which was held in Cumberland on May 28th, where he later missed the mark to compete at state by shooting a 97 during his round. Overall, it was a great season for the Birchwood Golf Team and it will be astonishing to see how they will succeed in the following years. Thank you to all the businesses who made this season possible.
