Waterford City, Co. Waterford Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city and was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. Waterford is located in the south east of Ireland on the estuary of the river Suir. It is located 170km south of Dublin and 130km east of Cork.

The county colours are blue and white and the county is often referred to as The Deise (pronounced “day-sha”). The term comes from a tribe of native Gaelic people called the Déisi which populated the area between the 4th and 8th centuries. Waterford is renowned for its crystal which has been produced in the city since 1783 and is also the site where the Irish national flag was first flown.

Every August the city hosts ‘Spraoi’, a festival with artists and musicians from around the world culminating in a parade and fireworks display on the final night.

The People’s Park, located in the city is a 6.6 hectare green space 10 minutes’ walk from the Birchwood Centre. Amenities include a children’s playground, skate park and playing fields.
