GARDENER’S MAILBAG
By NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: We had a di-chondra lawn when we lived in California. Here, no one even talks about it. Is it pos-sible to use it in Texas?
There are several species of dichondra that are native to Texas, but none are suit-able as a lawn substitute, primarily due to our extreme heat and drought. You do hear Texans talking about them, but usually in terms of understory weeds that crawl around beneath St. Augustine or intermingled with weak bermudagrass.
Dear Neil: What is the best way to control cutleaf evening primrose? It’s taking over my fl ower beds. Round Up has not worked. It dies to the ground, but it comes back from its roots. What will work?
Evening primroses are among our most beautiful wildfl owers, but when we introduce them (willingly or unwillingly) into our gardens, they quickly take over, just as you described. It’s miserable when you get them mixed into a perennial bed or within a groundcover. At least in annual beds, you have a new chance to get
rid of them every time you replant the bed and rework the soil. You can rototill carefully and rake out the roots. I’ve had a lot of experi-ence with it in my own beds, and keeping the soil loose by incorporating fresh organic matter into it once or twice a year really helps eliminate any seedlings or sprouts that do get started. Mulch-ing also helps. Technically, it’s a broadleafed weed (as opposed to a grassy weed), so broadleafed weedkill-ers containing 2,4-d should control it so long as they’re applied while it’s growing actively. The only problem is that they cannot be used near other desirable fl owers, groundcovers and shrubs. They’re safe only in lawn ar-eas. Good luck! It’s a tough one. Reworking the soil is your best, and easiest, bet.
Dear Neil: I enjoy your column and have sent in questions on occasion. I was concerned about a recent an-swer, however, on plantings to attract birds. I teach peo-ple at a workshop about the devastating effects of inva-sive species, even when they seem to attract birds. One of the plants you recommended was pyracanthas, although they are on do-not-plant lists because of their invasive na-ture. By comparison, I have had good experiences at-tracting birds with Carolina buckthorn, red mulberry, rusty blackhaw, soapberry, hackberry and mustang grapes.
I really appreciate you taking time to write and your suggestions. Respect-fully, I’m going to disagree gently, and I’ll explain why. However, I also need to ac-knowledge what a fi ne line this is for a garden writer. My goal is to assist Texas homeowners in establishing and maintaining functional and beautiful landscapes, lawns and gardens. To that end, I am mightily concerned with how “adapted” a plant is, not whether it is native to Texas or not. Asian jasmine is a lovely groundcover, but its name gives away its non-native roots. My father was a range ecologist with Texas A&M University. I learned at an early age how plants must co-exist and about the devastation that can result when one overly aggressive species takes over a plant community. However, in my 50 years of gardening in Texas, I have removed fewer than fi ve pyracan-tha seedlings from my own landscapes. In that same time, I’ve personally re-moved countless thousands of hackberry and red mul-berry seedlings that were brought in by birds from distant woods and hillsides. Even the previous question on evening primrose proves that native plants can be-come worse invaders than many of our non-natives. My problem is to sort through those non-native plants that could cause problems (i.e., Chinese tallow trees in South Texas wetlands, also
Japanese privet) and weigh them against the other non-native, yet handsome landscape plants (i.e., crape myrtles, nandinas, Asian jas-mine, etc.) that are unlikely ever to cause problems.
Dear Neil: How can I kill several large patches of ber-mudagrass that have invad-ed my zoysia lawn?
Killing one grass within another type of grass is one of the riskiest tasks in land-scape maintenance. In fact, bermudagrass is one of the worst invaders you can get in zoysia or buffalograss lawns. The best control for bermu-da is the family of glypho-sate herbicides (Round Up and others). They do a ter-rifi c job of killing bermu-dagrass. However, they kill other grasses even more ef-fi ciently. There is no control that will do what you need, so your best option would be to spot-treat at a point that the bermuda is growing ac-tively. Give the weedkiller 10 to 15 days to do its work, then replant each area with the same type of zoysia that you have in the rest of your yard. There is no other reli-able means of solving your problem.
!
Have a question you’d like Neil to consider? Mail it to him in care of the Wise Coun-ty Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-mail him at mailbag@sperrygar-dens.com. Neil regrets that he cannot reply to questions individually.

According to the March of Dimes, one in eight babies in the United States is born prematurely, a condition that poses greater risk of complications. Fortunately, there is an FDA-approved assessment that can help detect the likelihood of preterm birth that is recommended for high-risk women (such as those carrying twins and women who have delivered prematurely previously). Similar to a Pap test, the Fetal Fibronectin Test involves taking a sample of secretions with a swab that is analyzed for the presence of fetal fi bronectin. This glue-like substance holds the baby in place in the womb during weeks 22-35 of pregnancy. If the test is positive, there is an increased likelihood that the baby will arrive early.
Knowing all the options is important in making decisions for your body and your baby. At WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A., we understand the unique needs of women at every stage of life. For further information about this column or to discuss another concern, call 940-626-
8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201,

Prematurity is considered to occur when a baby is born sooner than 37 weeks after the beginning of a woman’s last menstrual period.

CHICKENPOX
Chickenpox remains one of the
most prevalent childhood diseases,
occurring most frequently in children
between two and eight years of age.
This highly contagious disease begins
with a slight fever, loss of appetite,
and malaise. The contagious period
starts one or two days before the
rash appears. Next, the distinctive
itchy, blister-like rash appears,
usually on the trunk or scalp at fi rst,
later spreading over the body. The
time between exposure and onset of
the illness is usually 14 to 16 days.
Children must be isolated until the
blisters are crusted, usually fi ve to
seven days from the time of onset.
Scratching the blisters may result in
scarring. A case of chickenpox usually
makes a person immune to the virus.
Let your pediatrician know right
away if your child has been exposed
to chicken pox. If you have questions
about any serious consequences,

Food service managers are encouraged to attend a food safety training pro-gram Tuesday, Jan. 27, and Wednesday, Jan. 28, begin-ning at 8 a.m. each day at Wise County’s Texas AgriL-ife Extension Service offi ce, 206 S. State Street, in Deca-tur.
This program will be of-fered for $110. Cost includes training, materials, and the state food manager certifi ca-tion examination.
The “Food Safety: It’s Our Business” course is designed to not only prepare food ser-vice managers to pass the certifi cation examination, but also to provide valuable education regarding the safe handling of food. Almost 50 cents of every dollar Ameri-cans spend on food is spent on meals prepared away from home. Therefore, care-ful attention to food safety will help keep customers safe and satisfi ed.
Foodborne illnesses are es-timated to cost thousands of dollars in lost wages, insur-ance and medical bills. With these statistics, knowledge of how to prevent foodborne illness is essential. The ben-efi ts of improved food safety include:■ increased customer sat-

By GARY CLAYTON
Wise Co. Extension Agent
The United States agricul-ture industry is essential to the livelihood of its citizens and those in other countries that purchase our commodi-ties. Ag industry in Wise County accounts for more than $50 million in income generated annually. Even though we live in one of the faster growing areas in Tex-as, it shouldn’t come as a sur-prise that you may have to share the road with a farm vehicle from time to time. Motor vehicle collisions with farm vehicles contribute to a number of unintentional injuries and fatalities each year. Most of these collisions can be prevented. By un-derstanding how they occur, motorists can take defensive
driving steps to avoid becom-ing a statistic.
One of the most common collisions happens when a mo-torist tries to pass a farm vehicle turn-ing left. A tractor that appears to be pulling to the right side of the road to let motorists pass may be actually prepar-ing to make a wide left turn. Check the left side of the road for gates, driveways or any place a farm vehicle might turn. Watch the farmer’s hand and light signals carefully.
Rear-end collisions with farm vehicles are also com-mon because of the large difference in speed. It can be diffi cult to judge traffi c speeds from a distance, so
slow down as soon as you see a tractor or slow-moving
vehicle emblem (an orange triangle out-lined in red). Stay a safe distance be-hind farm vehicles.
Another common type of collision happens as mo-torists pass farm equipment. This equipment may be extra-long, so be sure you can see the
farm vehicle in your rearview mirror before you get back in your lane.
Be patient. Even if you have to slow down to 20 mph for a tractor for two miles, it takes only six minutes of your time, about the same as waiting for three stoplights.
Pulling out in front of a pickup with a loaded cattle
trailer is another common error made by many inex-perienced drivers. It takes several hundred feet to stop a fully loaded gooseneck trailer being pulled by a 3/4-ton pickup. When a cattle hauler is forced to stop or ap-ply brakes quickly, the result will usually be injured live-stock.
There are many miles of farm-to-market roads in Wise County, so don’t be shocked next time you en-counter a farm vehicle, and please don’t curse or use sign language as you pass one of these slow-moving farm ve-hicles. Instead, say a prayer of thanks. It’s because of our nation’s farmers and ranch-ers that we all enjoy the saf-est and most economical food supply in the world. Happy New Year!

Junior exhibitors, are you getting ready for the time of your lives at the Fort Worth Stock Show? We all know it’s lots of fun, but don’t for-get why you’re there — to compete.
It’s important that you start getting your animal ready as well. First, you should start making them drink out of the bucket and eat out of the pan that you will feed them with while you are there. You can start
this about two weeks before you leave for the show.
It is also important that you take all the equipment and supplies you will need, and don’t de-pend on someone else to lend you something.
If you are taking cattle, some impor-tant things to take are neck ties, show halter, show stick, feed pan, water bucket and enough feed and hay for a week.
If you have them, also bring a rubber mat and di-viders.
If you have sheep or goats, you need a blanket, muzzle, feed and whatever you will need for show day such as feed pans and a cooler. If you have hogs, you will need your hog stick, feed pan and brush.
One very im-portant thing you
should do prior to the show is have the veterinarin do
a health check on your ani-mal.
If you do not have a health paper for your animal, they will not let you in the gate. Read over your papers, and make sure everything is cor-rect.
In closing, 4-H’ers should not lose sight of how they are representing their club and county.
Best wishes and good luck to everyone participating. If you need help while at the show or before, call me at the Extension offi ce at (940) 627-3341.

The Northwest
High School girls’
basketball team
proved its strength
last weekend in the
Boswell Holiday
Tournament. The
Lady Texans used
their talent and
toughness in
beating three teams
in two days at the
annual event. At
far left, Meredith
Moore (10) and
Shauntal Nobles

room inside the
paint. Left, Dee
Dee Jones doesn’t
let a defender get

opponent.
