TO RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD. . .

*The Affirmation of Faith (from “A Brief Statement of Faith”)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.

Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives,

teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted,

eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.

Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain

and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life,

breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

With believers in every time and place,

we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

The Lord's Prayer p. 16 in the Hymnal

The Service of Offering

The Gathering of Our Gifts

The Offertory “Song Without Words” Henry Kihlken

*The Doxology and Prayer of Dedication Doxology, p. 592 in the Hymnal

In joyous thanksgiving for the banquet of life, O God, we invite those who

live in poverty to share our wealth. We give up some of our luxuries for the

sake of brothers and sisters who lack food, shelter, or medical care. We reach

out to help, expecting no reward but the satisfaction of sharing what You have

so richly entrusted to us. We dedicate our time and abilities along with these

fruits of our labor. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

TO GO FORTH AND SERVE IN GOD’S NAME. . .

*The Hymn 343 “Called as Partners in Christ’s Service”

*The Charge & Benediction

August 29, 2010 THE WORSHIP OF GOD 8:30 and 10:00 am

We are delighted to have visitors worship with us!

To aid you in our liturgy, we want to acquaint you with

our following custom: In the Lord’s Prayer, we use the

words, “Forgive us our debts… our debtors.” We encourage

you to stand for singing if you are able as the organ

sounds the first note of introduction. When appropriate to

the hymn, the organist and choir will lead the congrega-

tion in singing, “Amen.”

Assistive listening devices (amplified earphones and

telecoilneckloops), large-print bulletins and hymnals

are available from the ushers.

Child Care is provided in the Education Building for

infants through kindergarten.

All worshippers are encouraged to sign the Atten-

dance/Friendship pad, greet your friends, and welcome

visitors.

The flowers today are given by Liz and Wyatt Thompson in

honor of Liz’s aunt, Elizabeth Lacy Jones’ 100th birthday.

Christian Education

All children, youth and adults are invited to the Church School breakfast on Sunday,

September 12, at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and the Church House (grades 6-12 and

their teachers meet and eat in the Church House). We ask singles to bring one dish and fami-

lies of two or more to please bring two dishes to share. Children and youth will be dismissed

to their classes around 10:00 a.m. Adults will hear short descriptions of the 8 classes, meet

the teachers and also see where classes meet.

Wednesday Night Fellowship will resume on September 15. Dinner will be served in the

Fellowship Hall from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Meals are prepared by members of the church

or catered by local restaurants and will cost $4 for adults, $2 for children 3-11 (family maxi-

mum, $14). We will sing hymns and play a game after the meal before being dismissed to

classes and activities. There is childcare for the youngest, and 4-year olds – 1st grade will

have story time, games and movies in the library. Our 2nd-5th graders will participate in mu-

sic extravaganza with Mary Ann and Larry Casey. Our adults may choose from cross stitch-

ing, learning to play bridge, Christian meditation, Faith & Movie class, and Congregational

Care Issues focusing on caring for loved ones and members of the church. To be explored

are such topics as visiting in the hospital, grieving, caring for loved ones with dementia,

planning funerals, etc.

Parents of our preschoolers and elementary children are invited to an information meet-

ing on Wednesday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle House. A new program,

‘Children in Mission,’ will begin in our Church School this fall. Our children will engage

in age-appropriate mission projects through the church school year. We hope this will in-

crease our children’s awareness of our neighbors close by and around the world. At the

meeting we will share some of the ideas and plans on ways our parents and church school

can share in this effort.

Bibles will be handed out to 3rd graders at both services on September 26.

The Children at the Lord’s Table Class for parents and 1st-3rd graders will be offered on

Sunday, September 26, from 12:00 to 2:15 p.m.

Micah has opened its Residential Recovery Program at 1512 Princess Anne Street and is hav-

ing a house warming party today, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The house, which pro-

vides respite to those leaving the hospital in need of temporary or terminal care, has been full

with a waiting list since opening the first week of May. Please visit us and see the impact

this program is having on the community and learn how you can participate. Bring a house-

warming gift, such as cleaning supplies, laundry items, hygiene products, socks and under-

wear to replenish our stock.

The Campus Christian Community is hosting its fourth annual golf tournament on Mon-

day, September 20, at Lee's Hill Golf Club. Cost is $300 for a team, $80 for an individual.

Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. For registration forms and further information, go to

Fellowship and Small Groups

The Forever Young Planning Committee will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Septem-

ber 1, in the Middle House.

The Prime Timers will have their annual planning luncheon on Wednesday, September 8, at

11:30 a.m. at Ruby Tuesdays Restaurant in Central Park. Bring your ideas and your calen-

dars. You will order off the menu and be issued separate checks. The Prime Timers (mostly

retired) meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for an activity and lunch.

Thursday Morning Women’s Bible Study: Which book of the Bible never mentions the

name of God nor gives explanation on how to live the Christian life, and yet somehow re-

veals the nature of God and the Almighty’s activity in human history? Welcome to the story

of Esther. Far more than a beauty pageant, the book of Esther is a literary masterpiece, an

artfully crafted short story full of intrigue, tragedy, and triumph. Join us this fall as we dis-

cover God’s providence written on this Old Testament page-turner through the Beth Moore

study, “Esther – It’s Tough Being a Woman.” Our first meeting is Thursday, September 16.

We will meet weekly in the Middle House first floor classroom from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30

a.m. Childcare is provided. Please contact Jen Rowe, 373-6633 ([email protected]) for

more information.
