This Week at the Chapel

GriefShare is a thirteen week support group for those who are hurt-ing from the loss of a loved one. We will show a video each week and hear from well known counselors and people like yourselves who will give you positive input on how to deal with your pain. You will bond with the people in your group as talking to them about your feelings is very healing. We will start on Oct.10th, and go to Dec. 19th. The group will resume on Jan. 9th, and end on Jan. 16th. We will meet downstairs in the Broyles Center in the Big Canoe Chapel and will begin at 5PM and end at 6:30. It is rewarding to meet former partici-pants who will say they couldn't have managed their grief without GriefShare and how their life has become so full again. Contact San-dra Hintze at (706.268.1937), Bob Layfield (706.268.1356), Della Clendenan, (706.516.8192). Women’s Guild Fall Retreat: Thursday, October 13, 9 am – 12:30 pm, at Peach Brandy Cottage, Dawsonville. Retreat Leader: Rev Julie Merritt Lee. Your $25 reservation includes morning coffee and a deli-cious buffet lunch. Purchase at Stand Around today or place your check, payable to BC Chapel, in the envelope in the Guild Alpha box in the postal facility. Call Bonnie (706.579.012) or Brenda (706.268.2118) with questions. Retreat Leader, Rev. Merritt Lee, was pastor of Providence Bap-tist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina from July of 2009 until this summer. In June, she and her husband moved to Houston, Texas where she is working on her spiritual direction certificate. Before Providence she held a number of pastoral positions in Dallas, San An-tonio and Waco, Texas. Rev. Merritt Lee was the plenary speaker at the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) General Assemblies held in Houston in 2009 and in Dallas in 2015. Blanket Ministry-At Stand Around next Sunday (September, 25th) the Blanket Ministry will be offering children's caps and scarves and adult scarves and shrugs. Don't know what a shrug is? Come and see. These will make good Christmas presents and the children's items will fit nicely in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. These items were made from the leftover fleece in the Blanket Ministry. There is no charge for these items but donations will be appreciated.

Welcome!

Big Canoe Chapel is a multi-denominational congregation united in our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. The Chapel gladly welcomes anyone desiring to become a regular, associate, or fellowship member.

As we proceed over the next few weeks looking at the Big Canoe Chapel statement of faith, I hope you will be mindful of the living dynamic that the statement represents. It is cer-tainly more than a mere document expressing some very im-portant foundational truths. It is that but it is much, much more. It’s actually a testimony of a spiritual reality being ex-perienced in the lives of God’s people at Big Canoe Chapel.

Recently, I came across a poem by W.E. Sangster. It’s a poem of petition. I discovered it in a book that I often use in my devotional time. Petition is the inward look. The prayer of petition is the cry of the heart for the individual believer. Sometimes it arises from a bankruptcy of the soul. Often it expresses a need that is far beyond our ability to meet. Listen to what Sangster writes:

Lord Jesus, I am longing From sin to be set free: To find my deep desiring Forever fixed on Thee. All hope I now abandon Myself to conquer sin; Invade my willing nature And come and dwell within.

Sangster concludes his prayer with what the living Jesus seeks to do in your life and mine. It rises far above a doctrinal distinctive.

If Thou should’st stand close by me ‘Tis more than I deserve; But, being still outside me, From virtue yet I swerve. Come nearer, Lord, than near me, My succour to begin Usurp the heart that craves Thee! O come and dwell within.

Jesus dwells within! The statement of faith at the Chapel leaps off the page and inflames every heart! Thanks be unto God.

Grace and peace,

Len
