STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

In our Second Reading from the letter to the Hebrews, the writer says, “…persevere in running the race that lies be-fore us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” The author of the letter to the Hebrews has traditionally been consid-ered to be St. Paul, although many scholars question that. However, the quote cited certainly sounds like Paul, doesn’t it?

There are three elements in it that more or less jump out at you. The reference to life being a race is similar to other thoughts expressed by St. Paul (“I have run the good race; I have kept the faith”). In addition, there are two key words which also are themes Paul often expressed. Those are found in the word “persevere” and in the phrase “while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” Paul often points to perseverance as a necessary approach to being a good and consistent Christian. And he also tells us over and over that we must keep our eyes and hopes and motivations on something above, on Jesus.

It is easy to look at life as a race. In doing that nonetheless, we all understand that we are not speaking of a sprint, but of a marathon. In Greek the word used which we translate as “persevere” is hupomone which also might be translat-ed as “endure.” God has set a race before us. God wants us to run that race and He wants us to finish it correctly. To do that requires endurance, the willingness to continue and to seek holiness as good stewards, because our focus is on what is to come, not what is.

REFLECION DOMINICAL

Prayer Ministry What’s Prayer Ministry ? At a healing Mass, you will hear and see manifestation of the Holy Spirit through the gift of tongues, prophecy, Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom, raising our hands in praise . . . just like the apostles, disciples and Christians in early church times experienced after Pentecost. These are gifts or charisms which oftentimes lay dormant within us. You can read about this in the Acts of the Apostles in Scripture. At the end of our quarterly healing Mass, you will have the opportunity to receive prayer from the priest and in “prayer circles” where we intercede for each other as brothers and sisters in the family of Christ. Everyone is welcome to come and be prayed over. We never know how God is going to touch us and heal us. “Come and see…” That is the invitation

Save the Date! The next Returning Catholics 7-week Mini-Series will begin on Wed evening, Sept 28, 2016 in the church Social Room. For information contact Carol Becker ([email protected] 858-354-7085) or Steve Diamond ([email protected] 858-945-7171)

Scholarships for our High School Graduates

MAEGA (the Mexican American educational guidance foundation) is hosting a fund raising dinner at Tony’s Jacal famous local Mexican restaurant to help in seeking tax deductible donations that are utilized to provide scholarships for higher education after high school for local public high school Latino graduates on an annual basis.

We have been doing this at MAEGA for over 40 years and over the past few years we have been able to provide an average yearly total in the area of over $70,000 to be shared by an average of sixty to eighty deserving Latino new high school graduates as they seek higher education in the future in community colleges, universities and vocational schools. We also provide some scholarship renewals when funds are available.

This Don Lapham Memorial fund raising dinner will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd and Tuesday, August 30th 1st. from 5:00pm to 8 pm. Adults are $20 each and $10 each for children under 12. As in the past, this delicious Mexican dinner will be prepared by Tony Jacal. Dinner tickets can be purchased at Tony's on the night of the dinner or from parishioner Bruce Wadman.

Looking forward to seeing you there for a fun and "yummy" dinner that will also help to educate our essential, ambitious and energetic young people for the future.

Welcome to St. James-St. Leo Catholic Community!

We warmly welcome all visitors and hope you will consider making our community your parish home. Church attendance does not make you or your family registered members.

Registration forms are in the brochure rack at the entrance of the church, online, or at the parish office.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistes.org/english.htm
