La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia que se celebra el segundo

domingo de pascua ha quedado asociada ya al Papa de la

misericordia. San Juan Pablo II la instauró el año del jubileo,

consagró un santuario en Polonia, escribió una encíclica,

canonizó a Sor Faustina, apóstol de esta nueva devoción, y Él

mismo vivió, predicó, escribió y murió movido por la

misericordia divina. En el Evangelio de hoy Cristo resucitado se

muestra misericordioso y comprensivo con Tomás, que

experimenta en persona el perdón y la paz. En sus 27 años de

pontificado el Papa Juan Pablo II fue apóstol de la misericordia

de dos maneras: Con su enseñanza, especialmente en la encíclica

"Dives in misericordia". Pero también con sus gestos que han

quedado en la memoria de la Iglesia, más allá de sus palabras.

¿Cómo no recordar la visita que hizo a Alí Agcá en la cárcel para

perdonarlo, después de recuperarse del atentado? La mejor

representación artística de este abrazo es el cuadro de Rembrandt

que visualiza la parábola del hijo pródigo. Lo vimos siempre

cerca de los que necesitaban su palabra y su ayuda concreta,

ofreciendo ese abrazo a los enfermos de sida, a los ancianos

abandonados, a los niños, los emigrantes, los perseguidos. La

devoción a la Divina Misericordia constituye un auténtico

movimiento espiritual promovido por santa Faustina Kowalska.

A ella le pidió Jesús que se pintara una imagen suya con la

leyenda "Jesús en ti confío", y que se celebrara con gran

solemnidad el primer domingo después de Pascua de

Resurrección. Jesús prometió: "A las almas que propaguen la

devoción de mi misericordia, Yo las protegeré a lo largo de su

vida como una madre cariñosa a su hijo, y a la hora de la muerte

no seré para ellas Juez, sino su Salvador Misericordioso". En

1980 escribió una de sus encíclicas más bellas, que hoy podemos

volver a leer. "Rico en misericordia". En ella llama a la Iglesia

"casa de la misericordia" donde se acogen cuantos necesitan

ayuda, perdón y amor. Las relaciones mutuas entre los hombres y

los pueblos no pueden limitarse sólo a la justicia, sino que tienen

que perfeccionarse en el amor. Que nuestro canto final repita la

invocación del salmo: "Dad gracias al Señor porque es bueno,

porque es eterna su misericordia". Que así sea.

The feast of Divine Mercy that is celebrated on the second

Sunday of Easter has already been associated with the Pope of

Mercy. Saint John Paul II established it in the year of Jubilee,

consecrated a sanctuary in Poland, wrote an encyclical,

canonized Sister Faustina, an apostle of this new devotion, and

he himself lived, preached, wrote and died moved by divine

mercy. In today's Gospel, the risen Christ shows himself

merciful and understanding with Thomas, who experiences

forgiveness and peace in person.

In his 27 years of pontificate, Pope John Paul II was an apostle

of mercy in two ways: With his teaching, especially in the

encyclical "Dives in misericordia". But also with his gestures

that have remained in the memory of the Church, beyond his

words. How can one not remember the visit he made to Alí Agcá

in prison to forgive him, after recovering from the attack? The

best artistic representation of this hug is Rembrandt's painting

that visualizes the parable of the prodigal son. We always saw

him close to those who needed his word and his concrete help,

offering that embrace to the AIDS patients, the abandoned

elderly, the children, the emigrants, the persecuted.

Devotion to Divine Mercy is an authentic spiritual movement

promoted by Saint Faustina Kowalska. Jesus asked her to paint

an image of her with the legend "Jesus I trust in you", and that it

be celebrated with great solemnity on the first Sunday after

Easter. Jesus promised: "To the souls who spread the devotion of

my mercy, I will protect them throughout their lives like a loving

mother to her child, and at the time of death I will not be their

Judge, but their Merciful Savior."

In 1980 he wrote one of his most beautiful encyclicals, which we

can read again today. "Rich in mercy". In it he calls the Church

"house of mercy" where all those who need help, forgiveness

and love are welcomed. Mutual relations between men and

peoples cannot be limited only to justice, but must be perfected

in love. May our final song repeat the invocation of the psalm:

"Give thanks to the Lord because he is good, because his mercy

is eternal." So be it.

Charitable & Pastoral Outreach

Families and individuals in New York are struggling

with financial and medical needs--but you can help.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, our priests have

been ceaselessly ministering to their communities,

and parishes and their staff mobilized quickly to

support our communities with critical needs. The

Church is at work every day feeding the hungry,

providing for those in need, ensuring that essential

human services are available to the most vulnerable

among us. It is thanks to this long standing

foundation that the archdiocese was able to

effectively mobilize crisis response during the

pandemic.

Catholic Charities provided 151,000 people

with food and shelter in 2020. 39,000

vulnerable immigrants and refugees were

provided with legal assistance, taught

English, employment and resettlement

support.

The Prison apostolate develops bible study

groups, and makes baptisms, confession

and Mass accessible to inmates in both

women’s and men’s facilities

For this reason, I ask that you join me in sustaining

our network of parishes and the parishioners we

serve by participating in the Cardinal’s Annual

Stewardship Appeal. I invite you to prayerfully

consider a contribution and participate in this year’s

appeal. I kindly request that you fill out the

enclosed pledge card, place it in the mail, or drop it

in the offertory basket at Mass. If you have already

responded to this call to action, I extend my

sincerest gratitude.

¡Las familias e individuos en Nueva York están

luchando con problemas económicos y médicos

- pero nosotros podemos ayudarles! Desde que

empezó la pandemia, nuestros sacerdotes se

han encargado de las comunidades, las

parroquias y los empleados han apoyado a las

comunidades con sus necesidades más

importantes. La iglesia trabaja todos los días

para dar de comer al hambriento, proveer para

los necesitados, asegurándose de que los

servicios humanitarios están al alcance para

todos - incluyendo los más vulnerables. Es

espíritu de oración contribuir a la Campana.
