PASTOR’S COLUMN: Let us hope this new year turns out a lot better than the last one. Even so, we have all learned quite a bit about ourselves and our Faith. In a time of pandemic, although we are a sacramental people we can still celebrate as a faith community in person and “on line”. If absence makes the heart grow founder, for many, the inability to receive a sacrament, be it confession or communion, increases our appreciation of these and our eucharistic celebrations of the Mass. One day, this too will pass. Till then let us use the electronic gifts we have and stay connected and close to our faith traditions as possible. Fr. John P. Kavcak, M.S.C.

GENTLE THOUGHTS; You come from dust and to dust you will return. That's why you shouldn't dust. It could be someone you know. Being popular on Facebook is like sitting at the cool table in the cafeteria of a Mental Hospital. (I just know I am going to get in trouble for the above one.) The worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of Charades. One minute you're young and fun. And the next you're turning down the stereo in your car so you can see better. This "killing them with kindness" is taking way longer than I expected. Lockdowns can only go 4 ways. You will come out a monk, or a hunk, a chunk or a drunk. Choose wisely!

Some people write “lockdown” because they cannot spell “kuarenteen”.

Margarita creció en Troyes, Francia, formando una relación especial con Nuestra Señora. Ella fue rechazada por dos comunidades religiosas pero luego, cuando regresó a Francia para visitar a su her-mana, conoció al fundador de Montreal, Canadá. Él la invitó a abrir una escuela en el Nuevo Mundo; a pesar de sus dudas, y luego de rezarle a María, ella aceptó. Desde aquella primera escuela en un establo abandonado, su ministerio creció incluyendo la ense-ñanza de artesanía a mujeres y fundando las Her-manas de la Congregación de Notre Dame. Growing up in Troyes, France, Marguerite formed a special relationship with Our Lady. She was turned away by two religious com-munities, but met the founder of Montreal, Canada, when he returned to France to visit his sister. He invited Marguerite to open a school in the New World; she went, despite misgivings, after praying to Mary. From that first school in an abandoned stable, her min-istry grew to include teaching women crafts and founding the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She managed to keep her sis-ters uncloistered, despite opposition from the bishop, and served as superior for many years. When Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1982, she became Canada’s first woman saint.

Jesus Begins His Mission

Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. After living with his mother for thirty years and working as an ordinary carpenter, it was time for Jesus to start His special work.

What was Jesus’ special work?

It was showing people the way to God and taking away their sins.

When you were baptized God was getting You ready for a special job too.

He was giving you grace so that you could grow closer to Him too.

How can you help bring others closer To God?

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those al-ready afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of heal-ing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be pa-tient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confi-dence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
