Introduction

My association with SPIE Student Chapter at D.C.E has been a very memorable learning experience in my undergrad program and I am confident that this is true for every other past, present and future members of this chapter. Through this student chapter SPIE has provided all the students of D.C.E, who are interested in Optics and Photonics, a gateway to connect to the outside world involved in this area. The student chapter has provided the much needed platform to bring all the students of the college together who share the same zeal and interests.

Our chapter is unique in a way that most of our members are undergraduates studying engineering in various fields such as Information and Communication Technologies, Electrical, Mechanical and Polymer technology, to mention a few among many. So what SPIE-DCE chapter does for the undergraduates is that it induces interest in Optics and Photonics and encourages the student to think beyond the traditional fields in their respective branches. I still remember the day when through one of the seminars organized by the previous student members, I came to know about the chapter and the TIFAC-CORE lab working in the field of Fiber Optics and Optical Communication and now I find myself going for Masters in Photonics after I complete my bachelors this year. But I am only a part of the tradition, as many of the past members of the chapter have done the same and without doubt it will continue in the coming years as well.

By awarding me the SPIE Officer travel grant and Ms. Swati Rawal the SPIE contingency Student Travel Grant, SPIE gave us a truly wonderful opportunity to attend the Optics & Photonics, 2008 at San Diego. To meet and interact with the most eminent researchers in the field, some of those from whose books we learn back home was very motivating and a humbling experience. The icing on the cake was to meet and become friends with students from all over the world working in the same field, sharing same passion. At the chapter leadership workshops we discussed and shared inputs about how to manage our chapter better and how to popularize our chapters among the new students in our colleges.

At the conference, I also met the Chapter leaders of the Vrije Univiersiteit Brussels who were interested in giving an outreach package called the EduKits which are designed by Network on Excellence in Micro-Optics (NEMO), through a grant from E.U. With the help of these kits the concept of Diffractive Optics (D.O.) can be practically demonstrated, which got me very excited because in India D.O. is already a part of pre-college classroom instruction and I remember how hard it was to understand and more importantly believe in the concept of Diffraction and Interference until you actually see it happening. With those EduKits and other material from our lab, our chapter then organized outreach activities especially in the government aided schools. We informed the students about how optics is making our everyday lives better and what the future careers in optics are. It was very exciting for us to see the young students getting excited about optics.

During my role as the chapter President I have always had support from my senior and the new chapter members, their enthusiasm and eagerness in organizing activities is very commendable. I would particularly like to thank PhD researchers associated with our chapters: Swati Rawal, Monica, Bhawana, Kamal and among undergraduate students: Saumil and Anoop. But the most important and beneficial role has been played by our faculty advisor Prof. R.K. Sinha. Despite his busy schedule as a teacher, researcher and now the Dean of Industrial Research and Development, he has always found time and energy to help and motivate us in chapter related activities. Finally I would like to thank Dirk and Jason for their constant support in smooth running of our chapter. I would also like to use this opportunity to welcome Ben to our SPIE student family. I wish all the best to the next SPIE-DCE Chapter council which will soon be formed in March, 2009 and hope that our chapter will continue to be better and stronger each year.

PHOTONICS 2008: International Conference on Fiber Optics and Photonics

IIT Delhi had organised Photonics 2008 and 8 students from the Delhi College of Engineering attended various conferences and some short courses. The students included: 1) Anoop Ramakrishna - BE 2) Kamal Kishor - PhD 3) Swati Rawal - PhD 4) Monica Rajput - PhD 5) Bhawana Dabas - PhD 6) Anshu Varshney - PhD 7) Shruti Singh - PhD 8) Himanshu Raja - BE The students attended short courses that were held at IIT Delhi and the conference which was held at the India Habitat center, New Delhi. The short courses attended were based on Silicon Photonics, taken by Dr Michal Lipson and Dr Alex Gaeta, both from ECE Department, Cornell University and Photonics Crystals: Fibres and Devices by Prof. Benjamin J. Eggleton, School of Physics, Univ. of Sydney. The conference itself spanned 3 days and was a huge source of information and encouragement to the students to follow the path of knowledge and to be at the cutting edge of the new frontiers of science. The students interacted with many luminaries present at the conference exchanging views and truly amalgamating experience and raw talent. The students were accompanied by their guide, Prof. R.K.Sinha.

Outreach Activities

SPIE-DCE chapter in the past has been active in creating awareness and popularizing Optics in schools

in Delhi. But this year that spirit was taken to new heights when our chapter organized outreach

activities in Government aided schools in Delhi with the help of NEMO’s Educational Kits on Micro-

Optics provided to us by Vrije Universiteit Brussels student chapter and the educational material such

as posters and CD-ROMs provided by the SPIE.

Outreach Activity 1st – 25th October 2008

The student members of SPIE DCE visited a government School in a nearby Locality, Rohini, Delhi to

help popularize optics in the School. The school students were very enthusiastic, making intelligent

observations and asking many questions. We discussed, among other things, the various aspects of life

in College and also the importance of physics and optics in particular. They also gave them many

examples of job prospects in the field.

We then demonstrated them EduKits and distributed the kits to the physics laboratory of the schools

so that the students are able to witness the phenomena that they study in text books.

Outreach Activity 2nd – 31st October 2008

Another school was visited by the student members, this time it was a government school in Mangol

Puri, Delhi. The school students had completed ray optics and were able to follow the instructions

without much difficulty. They were in awe when some of the NEMO kit experiments were

demonstrated to them, and were very excited when NEMO kits were donated to their school's physics

lab, to help further their knowledge and interest in the subject.
