SPIE DCE CHAPTER These 6 months marked the coming of age of SPIE DCE Chapter.
It was the period when the membership drive went into overdrive,
student contribution increased, new talents were found to lead the
chapter to greater heights, high-quality projects were initiated and
the contribution of the chapter was acknowledged by one and all.
As ours is a unique chapter with majority undergraduate students
and the council completely consisting of them, we have a yearly
process of change of leadership. It is my final year at DCE, and
my final report for my chapter. When I look back at how far the
chapter has come from the day we founded it in January 2005,
I’m always left amazed. But the predominant feeling in my heart is
that of gratitude. I am what I am because of the chapter, because
of the platform SPIE provided me. Ill always be thankful to Dirk
sir, Jason sir and the rest of the team at SPIE for their continuous
support…..
…..and now as I pass the baton to the next generation of worthy
students, I hope they would take the chapter to new heights and
that I will be able to feel proud for being a part of this great
endeavor.

New and Improved Website
www.spiedcechapter.dce.edu
New SPIE DCE chapter website was launched. I contains all the
information about the chapter, contact information of members and
leaders and details of all forthcoming and past events organized by us.
The site was made by a team consisting of Paramdeep Singh, Tejbir
Singh and Vikrant Aggarwal. Its maintainance is being kept by the
creators and Sunny Sharma.
Lecture on ‘Laser Light and Terahertz’
by Dr. Harvey Rutt University of Southampton, UK
26th September, 2006
A lecture on Terahertz by Dr. Harvey Rutt was organized by SPIE DCE
Chapter on 26th September, 2006. He is a Fellow of the Institute of
Physics (UK) and a member of the Optical Society of America, SPIE,
and the European Physical Society. Prof Rutt took up the Rank Chair of
Infrared science and Technology at Southampton University in January
1992. The group has established a broad range of work in novel sources,
instruments and systems in the mid and far infrared. He is involved to a
substantial extent in managing the Department, and also edits the Journal
Infrared Physics and Technology. He is a Deputy Director of the
Optoelectronics Research Centre, the largest optoelectronics group in the
UK.
He discussed his research work on Terahertz, the future of the
technology, the pros and cons and implementation issues of
Terahertz.
He also discussed the prospects of higher education at University
of Southampton and had an informal chat with student members
after the lecture.
Lecture on ‘Laser Light and Terahertz’ by
Dr. Krishna Shenai Utah Science, Technology, and Research (USTAR) Professor
Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Utah State University
10th October, 2006
This talk focused on new strategies and directions for the
development and application of advanced low-power mixed-signal
and RF electronics, especially to fuel next generation multimedia
and wireless devices with embedded power management
technologies.
.
The talk highlighted state-of-the-art and new developments in on-
chip power conversion and power management
Visit by Dr. Eugene Arthurs 10 November, 2006
Dr. Arthurs visited Delhi College of Engineering to meet the
members of SPIE DCE Chapter and gave a very informative
presentation regarding benefits of becoming a SPIE member. It
was a great opportunity for us to meet him and clear certain
doubts regarding the working of the chapter.
He was highly impressed by our accomplishments and also
visited our TIFAC-CORE labs for research in Fiber Optics and
Optical Communication.
Optics and Photonics ‘06
San Diego, CA
Alpesh Chaddha was awarded the SPIE Travel Grant to attend
the SPIE Optics and Photonics 2006 at San Diego, USA.
Award for Dr. R.K. Sinha,
Faculty Advisor, SPIE DCE Chapter
Dr. R. K. Sinha of DCE Delhi was selected for the “Optoelectronics Technology Award” for the year 2006 by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication
Engineers, India. Dr Sinha received this prestigious award of IETE “in recognition for
distinguished contribution for outstanding research in the area of Nano-Photonics
leading to the establishment of interdisciplinary research center, TIFAC-Center of
Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in Fiber Optics and Optical communication, at DCE
Delhi.”
This award has been instituted by the organizing committee of the International
Conference on Emerging Optoelectronic Technologies (CEOT) held in July 1994 at
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and is co-sponsored by IETE. The award is
conferred biennially by IETE on a person for outstanding contribution in the field of
Optoelectronics covering materials, devices, circuits, technologies, systems and
application and is known as IETE-CEOT award.
