About SPIE-IISc Chapter

The SPIE-IISc chapter was inaugurated in August 2010 with a vision to bring together researchers working in all different fields of Optics and Photonics under a common platform to explore opportunities and share knowledge. Since then the chapter has been successful in regularly conducting educational and technical talks by eminent speakers all across the country. In this report an update of SPIE-IISc chapter activities for the current year is presented.

Chapter Meetings

Execom committee meetings were held on 17th January, 24th March, 15th July, 9th September and 9th December of 2014 to discuss and plan various talks and activities.

Chapter Activities

To increase the involvement of the student members, we have setup a Google site webpage for the Applied Photonics Initiative, IISc. https://sites.google.com/site/appliedphotonicsiisc/spie-chapter .Also a facebook group has been created named as “Optics-Groups-IISc” https://www.facebook.com/groups/spieosaiisc/ where all students working in the Optics and Photonics related areas can coordinate and plan meetups etc... Updates on chapter events and other activities are regularly posted online.

Below are the activities conducted and co-ordinated by the SPIE-IISc student chapter. The members of the chapters have actively contributed their time and effort in the organization and functioning of these activities.

On March 5-8, 2014Student members participated and presented Oral and Poster presentations in the International Conference on Optics & Optoelectronics (ICOL-2014) held at IRDE, Dehradun. Chandana, memeber of IISc student chapter received the BEST PAPER Award.

On 14 March 2014 : (Friday) Being the birthday of great physicist Albert Einstein and World Pi Day. We organized a one day workshop on Computational Photonics at the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, ECE Dept., IIScIt included Three talks on Photonics

9.30am-11 am: Prof. James B Cole, University of Tsukuba, JapanThe Finite Difference Time Domain Method for Computational Optics and Electromagnetics: the Devils in the Details

11.30am- 1pm: Prof. Murugesan Venkatapathy: SERC, IIScOptical properties of matter: significance of computational models and some recent examples

Lunch Break: 1pm-2pm

2.30pm-4.00pm Prof. B K Das, IIT MadrasSOI Optical Interconnects - Technology and Trends

4.00pm onwards: Photonics Membership Drive was conducted to help those who want to join.

Total of 76 students attended the workshop. 34 Graduate students from various departments of IISc and 42 undergraduate students attended the workshop. The students interacted with the speakers over the talk and also on the breaks. The event was very popular and we plan to do similar events in the coming year. No Registration fee was collected.

On April 14-17, 2014Neeraj Sharma, student member from ECE Dept, IISc represented the student chapter at the student leadership meet at the SPIE Photonics (Europe) meet.

On 25 April 2014 We conducted a Technical Session on Micro Nano Photonics, it included talks on “Micro opto-electro mechanical systems” by Dr. Jagannath Nayak, RCI Hyderabad (2:30- 3:30pm) and on “Recent Advances in Photonic Integrated circuits for communications and Sensors Applications” by Dr. T Srinivas, IISc Bangalore (4-5pm) Venue: Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, ECE Dept, IISc

On 6 May 2014 (Tue) 5.30pm-6.30pmA Technical Presentation Demo on the topic of “Overview of Optical Test and Measuring Equipment” was organized at Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, ECE Dept, IISc. Mr. Mathieu Bergont, from Yenista Optics, Singapore presented and interacted with students and faculty members. The presentation covered the topics related to Tunable lasers, Filters, Optical spectrum analyser, Component Analyser and OpticalSwitches. It high light the features of each of the equipments,Technology and application area etc.

On 8 May 2014 (Thu) 4pm-5pm, A Technical Talk on the topic: “Multilayer Structures in Fiber and Integrated optics” was organized.Speaker: Prof. Vipul Rustogi, IIT RoorkeeVenue: Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, ECE Dept, IISc

On 22 May 2014 Talk on “Photonics for energy and security applications” was given by Bala Pesala, CSIR- AcSIR, Chennai at Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, ECE Dept, IISc from 11.30am-12.30pm.In this talk, Solar energy harvesting, building integrated photovoltaics and the applications of Terahertz technology, photonics were discussed.

On 23 July 2014, 4.30-5.30pm We organized a Technical Talk on “All optical wavelength conversion of phase-modulated data”by Dr. Deepa Venkitesh, Assistant Professor, Dept of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras at CeNSE seminar Hall

Bio-Photonics Seminar SeriesDue to increased number of student members from interdisciplinary branches and popular demand in the area. We have initiated a lecture series wherein talks on this area are presented. Every month we plan to organize a talk related to the Bio-photonics topics.

On 28th November 2014The first talk in this series was given by Dr. Samir K Biswas on the emerging area of “Photoacoustic imaging” at Golden Jubilee Hall, ECE, IISc. 4-5 PM .

Outreach Activities

In the month of April every year OpenHouse is organized where in students from local school and colleges visit IISc. A lot of optics and photonics demonstrations are conducted to invoke curiosity and encourage students to appreciate and understand the science behind many common phenomena.

On November 15 2014On the eve of Childrens Day, student members visited two primary schools in Lakshmipura and Jalahalli. They demonstrated the optics experiments and distributed chocolates. About 200 school students witnessed the various Optics demonstrations and were thrilled by the show. It was wonderful experience to see the joy and excitement of the kids seeing a rainbow inside their classroom. The students were given opportunity to present their ideas on the environment and importance of its conservtion through debates and plays. Prizes were distributed to the best presenters.

Planned Activites

Apart from Lecture series and seminars. We plan on three major workshops for the year 2015 on the following topics

1. Bio-Photonics2. Computational Techniques in Photonics3. Optics and Lasers in Engineering Applications

This is mainly for the benefit of the student community and to increase membership growth.

Monthly technical talks are planned at various Educational Institutions are planned as outreach activity. We also plan to visit more schools and colleges to create awareness on optics and photonics and its impact on our lives. We are planning to involve more people through out the International Year of Light #IYL 2015.

We would like to take part in activities of other SPIE chapters in India – In December 2014, PHOTONICS 2014 international conference is being held in IIT Kharagpur. About 10 research students are presenting their work and look forward to meet and interact with other students.

Financial Position

Technical talks are open to all.Major Workshops are charged for Non-membersExpenses usually shared with OSA and IEEE Chapters.Did not claim any grants from SPIE in the last two yearsPresent Position: Rs.32000/-Canara bank, Indian Institute of Science
