I am delighted to announce that Grace-St. Luke’s has called Mary Margaret Winn to be our full-time youth minister. Mary Margaret will begin work in July. She comes to us from Sewanee, where she is a graduating

senior and an English major. Mary Margaret was born and raised in Atlanta, and her home parish is Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Decatur.

There is so much that I want to tell you about her. Mary Margaret is someone who has thrived and been a leader in a variety of settings. For example, she is both the Head Sacristan at All Saints Chapel and the Head Proctor for residential life at her University. She is a confident person, too, who naturally engages both youth and adults. She has been graced with a ‘preacher’s voice.’ By this I mean that she likes to talk about faith and is very comfortable speaking in front of all ages.

Mary Margaret is a person of faith. She speaks naturally and thoughtfully about her personal faith in God, the guidance of the Holy Spirit throughout her life, and the comfort we receive from the liturgy in the Episcopal Church. Clearly, she is someone who will be a fabulous example of faith and joy for our youth. She lives the kind of faith, self-esteem, and love that we hope to cultivate in each youth at Grace-St. Luke’s.

When she joins us in July, here is the way—if you are a youth of the parish—to get to know Mary Margaret. We will have weekly EYC (6th-12th grade) youth lunches at local restaurants. We also will have a 6th-12th grade youth mission trip to New Orleans during the third week in July (expect more information soon from Courtney Oliver, our part-time youth minister).

Mary Margaret will be with our youth who attend the Parish Exodus/Retreat from September 27-29 at Camp Bratton-Green, which is always a great time to gather as a parish in a fun place with all ages.

It was our privilege to receive resumes from some very impressive candidates. We are very grateful for all the interest in the position. Additionally, many people have worked hard and faithfully for us to reach this point of calling a full-time youth minister. I want to thank the seven adults (Courtney Ciaramitaro, Rob Clark, Ginger Collier, Amy Huber, Harriet Roberts, Father Joseph Wallace-Williams, and Marci Woodmansee) and the six youth (Katie Ayers, Grey Clark,

Jake Epperson, Audrey Garrett, Abbie Huber, and Adaline Lawson) who served on our search committee. As a group, we learned a lot about the kind of parish that God is calling us to become for the sake of our youth. And our committee is as excited as I am about Mary Margaret’s arrival and the gifts she brings with her.

In the meantime, please know that Courtney Oliver continues to do a wonderful job planning activities and guiding our youth program. I am so grateful for Courtney’s guidance during this interim year. Courtney is another terrific example of faith and joy for our youth. I am delighted as well that Courtney wants to stay engaged with our youth program as a youth advisor once Mary Margaret arrives. Courtney will join us as well for the mission trip to New Orleans, which she is planning.

Last but not least, I want to thank the entire parish for one thing that is so important: pledges. It is that financial generosity—as well as a gift especially given to establish a fund for youth at GSL—which has made this important hire possible at this crucial moment in our parish’s history. This is an example of how the money we give to our parish church generates mission and meaning, with God’s help.

The Reverend Richard Lawson

From the Rector: Welcome, Mary Margaret!

25 years ago (1988): I would like to share with those of you who were not in church on Sunday that our Search Committee for the Organist-Choirmaster met last week and voted by secret ballot to select Wesley Emerson as the permanent Organist-Choirmaster of this church. I want to express my appreciation to the following members of the committee who worked long, professionally and diligently during the selection process: Sidney Hickey, Corinne Wilson, Jeanie Nichols, Lee Wardlaw, Martha Pipkin, Tom Wyatt and Jane McSpadden... The standing ovation at both 9:00 and 11:15 this past Sunday is an indication that we have made a choice with which the congregation agrees. Faithfully and sincerely, Charles M. Riddle, III

Prayersby Harriet Roberts

I HAPPENED TO BE STANDING

I don’t know where prayers go, or what they do.Do cats pray, while they sleep half-asleep in the sun?Does the opossum pray as it crosses the street? The sunflowers? The old black oak growing older every year?I know I can walk through the world, along the shore or under the trees, with my mind filled with things of little importance, in fullself-attendance. A condition I can’t really call being alive. Is a prayer a gift, or a petition, or does it matter? The sunflowers blaze, maybe that’s their way.Maybe the cats are sound asleep. Maybe not.

While I was thinking this I happened to be standingjust outside my door, with my notebook open, which is the way I begin every morning. Then the wren in the privet began to sing.He was positively drenched in enthusiasm,I don’t know why. And yet, why not.I wouldn’t persuade you from whatever you believeor whatever you don’t. That’s your business. But I thought, of the wren’s singing, what could this be if it isn’t a prayer? So I just listened, my pen in the air. - Mary Oliver

When I was in Boston last month, my sister, Kate read this poem to me.

On probably my first morning there we were both still in our Lanz nightgowns drinking Dunkin’ Donuts coffee while piled atop Kate’s bed. This has become our lazy morning ritual when I visit. We sit and talk quietly—coffee in hand—before we shower and tackle the day.

“Have you read Mary Oliver’s latest book” Kate asked. I shook my head. Kate extracted herself from under a duvet and three large cats and she picked up a small grey, hardback book that was on the floor next to her bed. Opening to a page that was being held by the dust jacket, Kate stood in the middle of her bedroom and started reading. With her clear, quiet voice, she read a poem to me. Generally speaking, I like Mary Oliver’s poetry. It is accessible. That is to say, I actually understand it!

When I came back to Memphis with now—my own copy of Mary Oliver’s book, A Thousand Mornings—I read the same poem, “I Happened to be Standing,” to Linda Stine because I thought she would like it as much as I did. I was standing in the doorway to her office.

When Father Joseph arrived at work half an hour later, I read it to him too. I even made Christi listen to me read it too: I just loved it so much. It was a real treat for me to share this poem with Linda and Joseph and Christi in the very same way Kate had first shared it with me.

It is because of Mary Oliver’s poem, I started thinking about prayers.

There are the prayers that we all say together like the Lord’s Prayer or the Nicene Creed. There are the prayers that we say in moments of fear or sadness or desperation. (It seems to me that those are prayers we say when—as Anne Lamott says—we have run out of bullets.) And, there are the prayers we say in moments of profound gratitude.

But, this poem made me think of another type of prayer: The prayer that simply is a spectacular thing or a spectacular moment. I suppose that would be the prayer that is acknowledging the knowing and the appreciating the very essence of something: That marvelous moment when that precious thing is absorbed right into you.

It might be the prayer of watching aurora borealis, lying on your back in a field in Maine; the prayer that is walking through a sequoia forest and pausing to touch the thick, ancient bark; the prayer of holding a baby opossum in the palm of your hand; or the prayer of noticing a strange, pale green, evening light after a thunder storm.

That is the prayer of inhaling and being infused with the very moment of wonder.

Stop by and tell me about your most recent moments of wonder. But, be warned, if you sit down on my office chair, and if you stay for more than five minutes, I just might whip out my copy of A Thousand Mornings, stand up, and read a poem to you.

On Saturday, February 16 , GSL experienced a mighty “Holy Ghost moment” in the Blessing of the Hands service for members of our Pastoral Care ministry. The chancel was full as we gathered together for a beautiful and moving service of blessing, prayer and anointing of our hands—the hands that provide a host of holy touches for our parish day in, day out, all year long. The Rev. Brent Powell, GSL parishioner and

chaplain at St. Jude, delivered a powerful sermon that inspired us all. Each of the thirty servants gathered there, one by one, placed our hands in the hands of Rev. Powell as he prayed these words, “Your hands are the hands of god. They are instruments of healing to everyone you touch. Receive every person as a child

Pastoral Care CornerThe Rev. Gayle McCarty, Associate Rector

of God offering God’s compassion, mercy and love. Amen.” He then gently anointed them with holy oil. It was a meaningful reminder of and renewal of commitment to our individual and corporate calls to ministry.

I commend to all the Closing Prayer for our individual prayer lives:

O Lord, take our ears and hear through them, take our hands and use them, take our lips and speak through them, take our eyes and smile through them, take our hearts and minds and wills, and use them as lamps of love,by which your light may shinein all the darkness of this suffering world. Amen. (picture on the cover)

Crossmen’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, sponsored by the Crossmen with assistance from the GSL youth, was a great success. A fun time was had by all with plenty of delicious pancakes (with yummy toppings), sausage and bacon.

More than $1400 was raised which will benefit the youth programs of the parish.

At Grace-St. Luke’s (and most other independent schools, I daresay), this time of year is marked by excitement and anticipation. We have been busy counting numbers of returning students, while eagerly awaiting responses from the new students who have received GSL enrollment contracts. We are looking forward to finding out which high schools our graduating eighth graders will be attending, while beginning to make plans for the many new families who will be joining our community. Add a dash of spring fever and some March madness to that, and you can see why we are all running in high gear! I thank you in advance for your prayers and support, and ask you one favor: please continue to talk to your friends and neighbors about the excellent program we have here at GSL. Your positive word-of-mouth keeps us strong and is truly invaluable in helping bring new families to this special community.

We look forward to a number of special events this month. First up is our school-wide Dr. Seuss Day, which brings different grade levels together in classroom partnerships and fun activities that celebrate the writings of Dr. Seuss. Next we will have our 8th Grade Internship Project Presentation Fair, at which 8th graders present visual displays of the work they did during their business internships in February. We also host our annual 4th Grade Citizenship Breakfast, when fourth graders invite people they consider good citizens to a special meal and presentation in Trezevant Hall. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell is scheduled as our guest speaker for that event.

We will be closed in the middle of the month for Spring Break (March 11-15). At the end of the month, in preparation for Easter, we invite you to one of our favorite annual traditions—the third grade’s presentation of the Stations of the Cross. At this event, third graders dress in Biblical costumes and present six scenes from the life of Christ: Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, Jesus at the temple, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, Jesus’ burial, and the Resurrection. This will take place on Thursday, March 28, beginning at 8:05 am in the circle drive in front of the Church and Lower School. Scenes are presented every five minutes until 9:00 am, and wind from the church ramp to the left, ending in front of the school administrative office. Please join us!

Finally, I hope you will save the date for our Middle School spring production, Into the Woods, Jr., which runs April 4-7 in McClure Hall. We will share times and ticket info in an upcoming Church eNews bulletin.

News From GSL SchoolThor Kvande, Head of School

The Messenger | March 2013 | 11

Congratulations to all of the third and fourth graders who participated in the annual Lower School spelling bee, and to our top three finishers:

Christopher (third place), Hallie (first place), and Frances (second place), pictured here with Head of Lower School Andy Surber.

We stopped by Father Joseph’s office in February; he was kind enough to pose for a Valentine’s photo and show his love for GSL!

Many thanks from Meredith, Callan, Margo, Carter, Audrey, Francie, and all of GSL’s 8th graders and their parents, to everyone who attended

our Italian Dinner. We appreciate your support!

your hearts and through this NetsforLife program to eradicate deaths from Malaria. You heard the message, saw the need, acted with a loving heart and saved your global neighbors from an agonizing death. Thank you for this amazing outpouring of love. Our hearts are full.

NETSforLIFE CAMPAIGN 2012

The FIGHT is not over, but the MOSQUITOES are losing, thanks to the gigantic gift from Grace St. Luke’s to the NetsforLife Campaign in 2012! The generous donations from the Church and School (listed on page 13) far surpassed our goal.

This was truly a “grass roots” effort because so many families and individuals were actively participating. GSL raised in the neighborhood of $14,000! Most of the gifts to the Nets Campaign were doubled by other donors who were willing to match your donations if sent and received during the designated time. Episcopal Relief and Development is at 99% of the NetsforLife nationwide $5 million goal. Donations are still being processed, so we expect to hear any day that the goal has been reached. We will let you know the final figures soon!

We know well that times are hard and money is of short supply. There are many deserving and needy people. We can assure you that 92 cents of every dollar goes to this program. You have definitely saved lives by your generosity. God is working through

Episcopal Churches worldwide celebrated ERD Sunday on February 17

•What is Episcopal Relief and Development? ERD (er-d.org) is an international relief and development agency and a compassionate response to human suffering on behalf of The Episcopal Church of the United States. Their work to heal a hurting world is guided by the principles of compassion, dignity and generosity; they take their mandate from the words of Jesus, found in Matthew 25: 37-40, that call us to feed the hungry, care for the sick and welcome the stranger.

• Pick up a 2013 ERD Lenten Reflection book located in the baskets in the narthex and west entranceway. You can also go to er-d.org/Lent and click the link to have the meditations emailed to you daily.

• Pick up a Hope Chest for your children to collect monies during Lent. These boxes, located with the reflection books and at the Christian education table, are to be brought to the Easter service for the Flowering of the Cross.
