From the Rector: All Sorts and ConditionsThe Spirit routinely opens my eyes to see the beauty and breadth of the people who come to GSL. On one particular Sunday last month, I

had a profound sense of God's presence in so many different people whom I met or saw at GSL, people who came for many different reasons. There is an old prayer in the Prayer Book that mentions "all sorts and conditions" of people. "All Sorts" might be a good nickname for our parish.

At both of the morning services, I prayed with a range of ages and personalities. Before the altar, all of these people share one thing in common: spiritual hunger and thirst. We hunger and thirst for Christ's presence in the sacrament, but we also hunger and thirst for some meaning and a sense of belonging to a larger purpose, a greater story. I love how the Eucharist makes a space for all of our longing, for all of our prayers, and even for all of our doubts and fears. It is a kind of miracle that in this parish a diverse group of people can find some measure of unity before the altar and before God.

After the 10:30 am service, I talked with people full of life. In light of my sermon in which I mentioned (as an aside) that it is a good thing God called me to be a priest rather than an electrician or an engineer, one person joked with me about the fact that he breaks everything in his house that he tries to fix. Another person shared an intimate prayer request that she did not want to be read out loud. And then there was the 3 year-old who brought me a picture she had colored during the service, a picture so abstract that only God could know what the little girl intended, as I am sure God did.

Each Sunday afternoon from about 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm or so, GSL feeds our guests in a program named "More Than A Meal." On this particular Sunday, there was an incredible team of regular volunteers led by Ruthie Lentz (a parishioner) and assisted by our youth minister, Mary Margaret, and a slew of youth from our parish. The guests who come for food and community at "More Than A Meal" range from people who are homeless to the poor who work but cannot quite make ends meet due to their wage. Each Sunday, there are a number of children who come as guests with their parents. I sat and talked with a gentleman who asked for my prayers because this was a big week for him as he had two different job interviews in Memphis. I prayed for him as hard as I could.

At the 5:30 pm Eucharist, I presided and preached, enjoying the beauty of the chancel. Because the new space in the chancel and nave have improved our acoustics, I do not have to wear

a microphone, so there is a real sound to my voice and a more relaxed but focused feel to the liturgy. The 5:30 pm seems to draw people looking for quietness, intimacy, and a less frenetic pace in life. As is usually this case, I was moved by this service's beauty and mystery, especially the people who are drawn to pray in this more intimate and quiet way.

Last but not least, I returned to the church later that night because I had left my iPad (which I use for the sermon) in the pulpit. I walked into the parking lot and saw at least twenty-five cars. It was a big group that had come for the last recovery group of the weekend. As I walked in, someone held the door for me, a nice turn of events in a place where I often serve as a host.

In that moment, with the door opened for me by someone whom I did not recognize and who did not recognize me, I realized that God in Christ is the One who welcomes all of us to GSL. "All sorts and conditions" come to this parish for so many different reasons, but the quest for wisdom and love is what makes all of us more alike than we usually admit. God is the One who opens the doors of the building and the doors of our hearts. Thank God for our parish.

Clothes Closet Thank You

Dear Grace St. Luke's Friends, What a wonderful way to share with our neighbors in the downtown community! Your contributions to the Calvary Clothes Closet are so appreciated. You collected over 20 bags of things and delivered them to us. I am thankful for

the relationship Juan Fuentes is fostering. After Easter, for a series called Easter in Action, we will begin to collect canned goods for your GSL Food Pantry and will be glad to deliver them to you after Pentecost. I am thankful for GSL and Calvary's work in harmony. During Lent I know I will see you serving or eating at Waffle Shop and attending the Lenten Preaching Series. We really appreciate you.

Going forward we would love to let you know of things we really need for the Clothes Closet, like men's belts and sleeping bags or blankets. Please feel invited to come any Sunday morning at 7:30 to see how your things are being used. At Community Breakfast you could be one of the personal shoppers who help our guests find pants that fit and a coat to keep them warm. Or, come Sunday nights and help with Room in the Inn sleeping overnight with guests who have no home or helping them find new clothes. Please call me at 312-5214 or [email protected].

Thank you again!Much love,Christine Todd, Community Ministries Coordinator

Angel Tree Project Thank You

I would like to thank Julia McDonald and all of the generous donors to the GSL Angel Tree project this past December. The children at the

Exchange Club Family Center were the recipients and they were overjoyed to receive these presents. For so many of them, Christmas is not an exciting time of year and they receive so few gifts, if any. Thank you GSL for making this Christmas one that will stand out in their memories as being one that made them very happy. Your generosity was so appreciated, not only by the families, but also by all of us at the Center. Barbara King

Men’s Retreat at St. Columba April 8–10

Will You Strive For Justice and Peace Among All People?I Will With God’s Help!

At the heart of our Episcopal identity is respect for the dignity of every human being, a commitment we renew each time we celebrate the baptismal liturgy. Come enjoy the beauty of St. Columba as we explore how to be

steadfast and faithful in our common commitment to strive for justice over the course of our lives. Our conversation will be guided by parishioner Stephen Bush. He is the Chief Public Defender for Shelby County, and is recognized nationally for his ground-breaking work with the Jericho Project serving those living with serious mental illness. He is also charged with leading efforts to ensure the constitutional rights of all children in Shelby County are protected under the Department of Justice mandated juvenile justice reforms that are underway in Shelby County.

Expand Your Horizons! Meet New Friends! Get Connected! We are reviving an old program which was a lot of fun, created long-lasting friendships, and helped new parish-ioners feel the hospitality that is associated with GSL. Groups of 6-8 GSL parishioners will gather for dinner two or three times during the months of April, May and June. The first host (a couple, partnership or individual) will

provide the venue, coordinate the date with the group, and provide the main dish. Those in the group will bring the rest of dinner in pot-luck fashion. Before everyone leaves that evening, someone will volunteer to host the next gathering, and so on.

Sign up online at www.gracestlukes.org/news/supper-clubs/ or Stop by Trezevant after each of the Sunday services on April 3. Once sign-up is complete, the Steering Committee will assign groups and identify the first host. From there, it’s up to each group to press on and have fun! GSL To Host Episcopal Relief & Development’s 75th

Anniversary Photo ExhibitionEpiscopal Relief & Development (ERD) is the compassionate response of The Episcopal Church to human suffering in the world, and provides relief in times of disaster and promotes sustainable

development by identifying and addressing the root causes of suffering.

One of the cornerstones of the 75th Anniversary Celebration is a touring exhibition of iconic photos from programs around the world. This beautiful presentation leads the viewer through a meaningful, intimate exploration of ERD’s history and four core program areas. Collected from five continents, these photographs reveal the faces and stories of 75 years of work.

The Diocese of West Tennessee is excited to host a representative from the national organization at an upcoming Rector’s Forum, and the exhibition will be available for viewing in Trezevant Hall on two Sundays–April 17 and 24. For more information, please visit www.episcopalrelief.org.

A big thank you, also, to the boy scouts who brought a cart full of food on Scout Sunday, Feb. 7.

Reaching Out From WithinAre you looking for ways to become more involved at GSL? Was your New Year’s resolution to learn about what is going on in the Memphis community? You are in luck! The Outreach Committee has many partner organizations who would love a parishioner to act as liaison. Outreach liaisons are parishioners who keep in contact with their organization over the course of a year. The major responsibility is establishing contact, keeping abreast of ongoing needs, and learning about volunteer opportunities where other parishioners or groups within GSL can become involved. This is an inspiring way to see the good works taking place in Memphis and how GSL is making a difference. For more information please contact Erin Shoughrue ([email protected] or 281-1468) or Ed Hord ([email protected] or 569-6149).

Many thanks to the clergy of GSL for holding a beautiful Ash Wednesday service for the school on February 10. We completed our second trimester the following week, and hosted two of our favorite PA events for 4th–8th grade students, the Father-Daughter and the Mother-Son events.

The 8th grade also completed their most important capstone project, the eight grade internships, last month, and presented their work to their mentors and the community at the Internship Project Presentation Fair on February 29. This year, we had 16 new businesses that agreed to host our students in the Mid-South. We even had one 8th grader travel to Washington D.C. to intern with Nike. We are so proud of these students!

At the end of this month, we have our annual middle school production "The Lion King, Jr.," running March 31-April 1 at 7:30 pm and April 2 at 10 am and 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available through the school office. We hope to see you there!

Second grade completed their service learning project in February by understanding how they can volunteer in the community. Courtney Miller from Volunteer Memphis, Mr. John Stewart who volunteers at the Streetdog Foundation, and Megan Banaszek from the Carpenter Art Garden spoke about their organizations and the many ways they use volunteers. Students then prepared materials for two projects at the Carpenter Art Garden and made bandannas for rescue dogs to wear at Streetdogs.

Pastoral Care Corner

from Maundy Thursday LiturgyThe Book of Common Prayer

The Lord Jesus, after he had supped with his disciples and had washed their feet, said to them, “Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.”

Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you.

I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.

Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you.

By this shall the world know that you are my disciples: That you have love for one another.

Easter Card OfferingMarch 13

NEWS OF BYGONE DaYS50 years ago (1966): The Agnus Dei window in the narthex, which is given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Margaret Ann Hammet by her aunt, Mrs. Gerald Wade, will be dedicated in the presence of the familiy and friends following the 7:30 service on Palm Sunday. This beautiful window joins the Baptistry, where Margaret Ann was Baptized on a Palm Sunday in her infancy.

No one knows the exact age of the cushions in our Church pews, but reliable informants suggest that they are at least forty, and probably fifty years old. They look it! A more or less spontaneous grass-roots movement to replace these ancient cushions has developed, and it has been found that for the cost of approximately $25 per four-person section of a pew, that new, highest quality cushions may be procured... If every family would consider the purchase of one cushion, we could easily replace all of the old ones at one time.

Dr. Jeff Blancett will be discussing teenage drinking and how both school and parenting styles affect the likelihood of alcohol abuse. In this entertaining and informative discussion, parents will also learn about new evidence showing the damage that drinking alcohol can do to teens’ brains.
