Egypt’s Mother’s Day on21stMarch is celebrated with songs devoted tomothers. In Australia, Mother’s Day grewfrom Janet Heyden’s campaign to give gifts tolonely inmates of Newington State Home forWomen. Schoolchildren in Japan drawpictures of their mothers for a nationwidecompetition to exhibit pictures around thecountry.Mexico’s Mother’s Day on 10th Maycelebrates both mothers and the Virgin Mary.Traditionally the day starts with mass beforemothers are presented with a breakfastaccompanied by a song. 14The problem I am asked about mostfrequently is one that almost all of us have:“What do I do with a north-facing wall?”What everyone wants to know is what you canplant against it and what can you do to turnyour luck around and increase the chances ofyour chosen plantnot just survivingbut also thriving.

Getting the rightplant for the spot isessential (somegreat north-facingwall climbers arelisted opposite) butfirst considerwhether you needyear round cover(and so somethingevergreen) or if you would accept a deciduousclimber that will lose its leaves but keep aframework of stems, or if you would mind aherbaceous climber that will die back eachyear and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth

reducing the shade somewhat if you can.Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back oroverhanging trees crowns lifted (the lowerbranches removed) or crown thinned (thecrown’s density reduced).

Walls may be a darkgrey or brick colourbut you can makethe spot considerablymore plant friendly ifyou change thecolour of the wallbefore planting. Useof a pale-colouredmasonry paint on thewall will cause lightto be reflected backto the plant andmake it more likely to

thrive even if conditions are a bit gloomy.

Consider growing more than one climber toincrease the season of interest and so theamount of time that the wall looks good –perhaps a climber for spring and another forsummer.

15Flowering may be reducedif the site is gloomy and soto maximize your climber’sflower power make surethat you apply sulphate ofpotash as this will increaseflowering potentialsomewhat. Follow theinstructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root areain late summer and then again in spring.

Make sure that the climber goes in at a gooddistance from the wall up which it is to grow.A minimum of about 45cm (18in) shouldmean that it can develop a good strong rootsystem and this will help to keep it growingwell and strongly even in this rather shadedspot.Self-clinging climbers such as the climbinghydrangea or a variegated ivy can look greatand help to provide at least part of theinterest you’re after for your north-facingwall, but even these often need a bit of ahelping hand to get them started – train thestems on to the wall and protect from winduntil they get properly attached.

Akebia Quinata (the chocolate vine).Pretty pale green foliage with vanillaperfumed purple-brown flowers in latespring.

Berberidopsis Coralline, evergreentwining climber. Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in earlyautumn.

Clematis, twining climber. Many smallerflowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well.

Codonopsis Convolvulacea. Aherbaceous climber with pretty bell orsaucer shaped violet coloured flowers insummer.

Humulus Lupulus, the hop, a twiningclimber. The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ willperform quite well as long as the shade isnot too intense or the site windy.

Hydrangea Anomela Petiolaris. A self-clinging deciduous climber with broadcreamy white flowerheads.

Lathyrus Latifolius. the everlastingpea. A herbaceous climber with smallclusters of pinky purple flowers throughoutthe summer and in to early autumn

Lonicera x Americana, a deciduoustwining climber. Classic honeysuckleflowers in yellow flushed red and with agorgeous perfume during the summer.

Lonicera x Tellamanniana, a deciduoustwining climber. Bright yellowy orangehoneysuckle flowers in late spring andsummer.

Vitis Coignetiae, a self-clinging,rampant climber. Renowned for itsfabulous autumn colour.

17The Herb Garden at C&C Plants - Opening on Easter SaturdayI’ve just finished picking some herbs to dryready for the grand opening of The HerbGarden Florist and Gift Shop on EasterSaturday. I started The Herb Garden 6 yearsago as a freelance, working out of a room atthe back of my garage. I specialise in usingBritish garden flowers, wild foliage, berries, seed heads, twigs and nuts as well as herbsfor my arrangements. So many importedflowers nowadays have little scent, so herbsadd both a wonderful scent and a country feelto any arrangement. I have provided flowersfor weddings in some amazing venues acrossthe country including the house of a rock star, stately homes, Army Officers’ Messes andthe RAF Club in Piccadilly.

I also run flower workshops at C&C Plants orany suitable venue. I love using naturalmaterials at my workshops, from pheasantfeathers, walnuts and Chinese lanterns tolilac, sweet peas and cornflowers in thesummer. Come and try one of the workshopsand see for yourself. You can learn the basicsand then choose from all the wonderfulmaterials to make your own arrangement totake home as well as lots of ideas to inspireyou. See my website atwww.theherbgarden.club for dates offorthcoming workshops.

To complement the garden centre and TheOld Brickyard Tea Garden, this new shop isbeing added, selling flowers, indoor plants, handmade, new and up-cycled gifts, gardening accessories and of course herbs! The recently completed landscape gardens atC&C Plants give you a good idea of what youcan achieve in your own gardens.

C&C Plants opens from Easter Saturday andthen every weekend until 1 May, when it isthen open every day until the end of August, when it’s back to weekends again untilChristmas. We look forward to welcomingyou.

What is it?The long-awaited replacementfor the Freelander and the firstin a new family of Discoverymodels. Land Rover has splitits range into three distinct‘pillars’. There’s Range Rover, with the Sport, the Evoque andthe full-fat Rangie. There’s theDefender range, which is soonto be retired in current classicform and replaced. And thenthere’s Discovery. The DiscoSport is the first and where itsits in the range will becomeclear as the new models areunveiled. There willundoubtedly be a larger modeland we’d expect to see a babyin the range too. That clear?Good. What’s under the bonnet?A diesel engine. Yes, for nowat least, just the one. JaguarLand Rover has an all-new setof power plants waiting in the

wings, dubbed Ingenium, butthey’re not ready yet so thelaunch of the Discovery Sportfeatures the tried and trusted2.2-litre SD4 unit that featuredin the outgoing Freelander. Itcomes in six-speed manual ornine-speed automatic guises, has 190bhp and 420Nm oftorque. CO2 emissions are161g/km and it’ll return47.1mpg. It’s nothing ground-breaking, but there’s littlewrong with it either. We can’thelp thinking, though, in fiveyears’ time the first batch ofDiscovery Sports with this ‘oldengine’ will be the ones buyersavoid. What’s the spec like? Not too bad at all. Mostimportantly there’s a newinfotainment system whichLand Rover - and sister firmJaguar - have been crying outfor. There’s a new suite of

apps which run on asmartphone and can bedisplayed on the car’s screen. They look pretty basic, but thesat nav works well. Four trimsare available - SE, SE Tech,HSE and HSE Luxury - all withvarying levels of the usualextras. Options include anarmrest cooler and warmerbox, seven USB points - onefor each passenger - andheadrest mounted iPadholders. It’s pretty competentin the towing stakes, too, witha maximum capacity of2,500kg.What’s it like to drive?Ok, so that’s the toughquestion, because it wasactually hard to tell. We spentthree days at the launch of theDiscovery Sport in Iceland, tackling terrain that wouldn’tlook out of place on the moon. However, the landscape was

so extreme it gave us very littleidea what it would be like todrive on a normal road. Wecan report it’s incrediblycompetent off road, though, and if the snow does fall, owners will be safe in theknowledge this car can copewith even heavy drifts. Wefound the ride a little hard, butthen that could have been the

dreadful surfaces, and it was alittle loud inside too, but againthat was probably the studdedtyres.VerdictThere’s no doubt theDiscovery Sport is a markedimprovement on theFreelander - stick them side byside and it makes the oldmodel look positively ancient.

The interior is a vastimprovement; it’s comfortableand has plenty of room in thefront and back. The multimediasystem is better than before, although not perfect, and offroad it’s in its absoluteelement. However, with notime on ‘normal’ roads on thelaunch it’s impossible to reporton what it would be like as adaily driver. We’ll reservejudgement on that for a laterdate. Still, we doubt this willharm the Disco Sport’spopularity - the brand is onsuch a roll it’s going to fly outof the showrooms.Model: Land Rover DiscoverySport SD4Price: From £32,995Engine: 2.2-litre, four-cylinder,turbocharged, dieselPower: 190bhp, 420NmMax speed: 117mph0-60mph: 9.8sCO2 emissions: 161g/km

20Honda CR-VThe Honda CR-V makes agreat case for family buyers.Stylish looks and newefficient diesel engines, capable of up to 62.8mpg,make this 4x4 extremely appealing. Combinethat with masses of boot space, folding rearseats for extra flexibility and extensive safetyfeatures, and it’s ideal for agrowing family.Volvo XC90New to the market in 2014,the Volvo XC90 has alreadymade a massiveimpression. A striking and stylish car to makeany Range Rover driver think twice, it’s packedwith Volvo’s latest safety and crash-preventiontechnology. Space is generous inside, withseats that can fold in various formations to suityour needs. It doesn’t come cheap though!Mini CountrymanIf you want quirky styling butaren’t looking for a hugeSUV, look no further than theMini Countryman. It offersfive seats, five doors and enough space to

swing a very small cat. It might not be the mostpractical car for five adults but you’ll fit in, whileall-wheel drive means you can take this Minioff-road where it’s surprisingly capable.Suzuki Grand VitaraThe Suzuki Grand Vitarawill please those buyerslooking for value for moneyand practicality. It’scheaper than most of itsrivals and this year’s model will be availablefrom £14,000. For their money, owners getloads of interior space, plus a decent level ofsafety and tech kit. It’s rugged and performswell off road, but those considering it shouldopt for the more economical diesel engine.Kia SportageThe Kia Sportage mightnot offer top-level quality, but it’s still spacious andcomfortable enough fordriving everyday. Runningcosts are extremely reasonable and thoseopting for the 1.7-litre diesel engine will be ableto achieve a reasonable 54.3mpg. Kia’s seven-year warranty makes this car, with pricesstarting from £17,500, even more appealing.

24It’s such a tempting idea – to give up today’sgadget-bound and stressful complexities andreturn to a simpler way of life: all home-made,home-grown and home-cooked. At the veryleast, why not surround yourself with some ofthe comforts of an old-fashioned home?

Take a look at your floors for afirst step towards nostalgicstyle. Plain or painted woodenboards are ideal, with flat-woven rugs for extra warmth.Neutral carpets or natural-fibrecoverings are a goodalternative, while you could optfor stone tiles in hallways orkitchens. On the walls keep things simple withwhite or off-white paint, or else push the boatout and go for floral wallpaper. For bathroomsand kitchens, painted tongue and groovepanelling or white bevel-edged tiles workespecially well.

The good news here is that furniture can bereally inexpensive – the sort of thing you mightpick up for next to nothing. Look for sturdy, useful pieces in a timeless style, made frompine, oak or Lloyd Loom. Anything too darkcan be painted – though make sure it is not toomassive and overbearing in the room. Don’texpect perfection: knocked corners or fadedupholstery may even enhance the overall look, while mismatching pieces aren’t too much of aproblem provided they fit into the overallaesthetic. If in doubt, a lick of paint or a well-positioned throw can work wonders.

Textiles are often the key to getting nostalgicstyle just right. Think plain fabrics combinedwith ticking stripes, gingham, spots and florals– spriggy or else big, blowsy blooms. Don’t aimfor over-co-ordination; instead, a range of

complementary colours and patterns gives asuitably eclectic effect. Natural fabrics (such ascotton, linen and wool) are nicest, in a range ofweights and effects, such as tweed, canvas, muslin or sateen. Look out for interesting

remnants at markets, auctionsand car boot sales that, ifyou’re good with a sewingmachine, can be run up into allsorts of lovely items. Windowtreatments, for example, are adoddle – just a pair of gatheredcurtains – while leftovers canquickly be made into cushioncovers. Add ric rac, ribbon orbobble trims to your heart’s

content. Patchwork quilts, of course, aresimply perfect in the bedroom, as are Welshblankets and satin eiderdowns, while knittingand crochet (especially granny squares) areessential ingredients in virtually any room.

Displays of pretty accessories can be themaking of this look, whether it’s sponge-printedceramics, pressed glass, blue-and-whitecrockery or enamelware. Modernreproductions are easy to find , but more funcan be had in seeking out just the right originalbits and bobs, from a vintage fair, charityshops or your local car boot sale. Thinkdressers piled with pretty crockery, a stack ofbiscuit tins on a shelf or lace-edged towels inthe bathroom. Add woven baskets, metalbuckets, vintage milk bottles, bristle brushes, some lengths of bunting, even old books suchas orange Penguin classics or Ladybirdchildren’s stories; and finish things off withsome informal arrangements of native flowerstucked into jam jars or informal jugs or vases. The result? You have transformed yesterday’spleasures into today’s delightful treasures.

Husband-and-wife team Salvatore and Ruthhave arrived in Leicestershire withSarusa, their new Italian Restaurant andbar. Between them, this hospitable duohave 30 years’ experience of runningrestaurants, which is why they’ve wastedno time importing fine wines, olive oil, cheeses and organic charcuterie fromSalvatore’s family estate in Tuscany.

Salvatore has crafted a variety of temptingmenus, including impressive Gluten-free,Vegetarian and Vegan bills of fare.Sarusa Restaurant & Bar is located at Six HillsGolf Course and boasts stunning views overthe greens. .

Salvatore and Ruth ran restaurants in Tuscanyuntil their move to England in November andthe Sarusa menu is highly influenced by thecolours and flavours of Tuscany and theirauthentic organic Italian produce. Theirconnections with Tuscany are an ongoingenterprise, guaranteeing continuous supplies ofproduce, which can also be bought from theirDeli Corner. Ruth was passionate about thequality of ingredients used and their dedicationto provide the ultimate dining experience for alldietary requirements and needs. Sarusaprovides mouth-watering options forvegetarians, vegans, gluten free & wheat freeand also any food allergies or intolerances.Various regular dishes can be individuallycooked for diabetic needs. Ruth does requestthat for any special culinary needs you shouldbook in advance and discuss your requirementsto ensure a good choice is possible.

We visited Sarusa on a winter’s evening, therestaurant is sign posted from the Six HillsLane (at the Golf Course entrance) and istucked away out of view of the road, but fairlyeasy to find.

The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, well arranged and coordinated. During thedaytime and on lighter evenings there is apleasant view of the greens and fields, andoutdoor seating and tables at warmer times. Wewere shown to a lounge/sitting area to order ourdrinks, nibble a few olives and peruse the

menu. The a la Carte menu is not extensive buthas a bit of everything, and in addition there is adaily specials board and a good selection forvegetarians. There is a full bar with a widechoice, including cocktails and local bottledBelvoir Ales also available on hand pull. Thewine list is well set out, offering both Italian &French house wines and a very interestingItalian wine map proposing fine wines fromvarious regions of Italy, including Salvatore’s2010 Tuscan Riserva.

After ordering, we were shown to our table andthe starters were served. I chose leek, broccoli& parmesan soup served with bruschetta fromthe specials board, whilst Kevin opted forprosciutto crudo from the a la carte menu. Thesoup was tasty, chunky & hearty but not toofilling, an Italian take on broccoli & stilton soupperhaps. Amongst the other starters there wasalso a spicy Tuscan tomato soup availablewhich tempted me. The prosciutto crudoconsisted of Salvatore’s own cured organicTuscan ham served with garlic bruschetta andCerignola olives. The ham was full of flavour, ideally mixing with the large olives and fresh

bruschetta.

SPECIAL OFFER FORMESSENGER READERS

FREE GLASS OF HOUSE WINEfor diners with this advertValid until May 31st . No photo copies.

My main was Chicken Saltimbocca, which islayered chicken breast, cured ham and sage,pan-fried and with a white wine sauce. The dishwas served with carrots, broccoli, spinach andpotatoes, all well presented and at the righttemperature. I especially liked the taste of thecombined chicken & ham and the sauce justbalanced it all. Kevin chose the porcinimushroom risotto from the Primi/Pasta & Ricemenu. The risotto wasn't available, so he wasoffered the porcini mushrooms with either quinoaor penne pasta. Although he doesn't normallychoose pasta dishes, Kevin did enjoy the pennewith mushrooms, the distinctive porcinimushrooms complemented the pasta equallywell.

Then on to tiramisu for meand chocolate lava puddingfor Kevin. Both wereindividual servings, thetiramisu was served in a tallglass, very indulgent andcreamy. The lava puddingwas an Italian style 'melt inthe middle' chocolate sponge, very chocolaty, gooey anddelicious.

During the meal, we tasted the Italian housewhite & red wines, both enjoyable and pleasant. We finished with creamy cappuccinos and shotsof complimentary Limoncello.

I must mention that the restaurant is open at9am for breakfast and throughout the day forlight bites, snacks, homemade cakes & sconeswhilst lunch is served from 12 – 2.30( Tuesdays and Wednesdays take advantage ofthe special offer 2 course lunch for £12.95! )Everyone is welcome to drop in. There is anEnglish Italian twist Sunday lunch menu with adifferent specials board each week. Typicaldishes can be : roast beef & Yorkshire puds withChianti gravy, herby roast pork with balsamicTuscan sausage & onion stuffing and cidergravy, penne with homemade rocket & almondpesto – all very mouth-watering. (£16.95 for 2courses, £20.95 for 3 courses)Salvatore and Ruth specialize in parties andevent catering for parties of 10 to 250 and willopen up the restaurant specially for groups of 15or more. They will also provide takeawaycatering at your own venue for a minimum of 6people. Why They Do TheThings They DoMarking, scratching and climbing are com-mon feline behaviours, but depending on thecircumstances, may not always be welcome. Here are some of the reasons why cats be-have the way they do, and what you can doabout it.

MarkingThis is often a territorial reaction to stress –maybe the fear that other cats could invadetheir space. Apart from providing extra loveand attention, you need to make sure theireating and sleeping areas are free from othersmells, and safe from intruders.

ScratchingThis is an inherent trait in all cats, and en-ables them to keep their claws sharp shouldthey need to defend themselves. A scratchingpost is the best way to prevent damage toyour furniture, and spraying catnip on andaround it may help to distract them from chairand table legs. Scent glands in their pawsalso mean that they may be scratching as away to mark their territory.

ClimbingIt won’t be unusual to see your cat hangingfrom the top of a curtain when you go into aroom, clinging on for dear life having got tothe top and then become stuck. Their naturalsense of adventure, plus the need to run off abit of energy, makes them do things like this. You may even find them looking down on youfrom the top of a door. It’s usually becausethey feel more confident when up high,or are simply showing their fun side.

For a professional, friendly and dependableservice, call on yourlocal legal team.

When you market your property (usuallythrough an estate agent) then you are requiredto have an Energy Performance Certificateprepared. These can be obtained from anumber of suppliers and most estate agentshave an Energy Assessor that they use. MostEnergy Performance Certificates are preparedat a relatively modest cost and last for tenyears.

Once a buyer for your property is found thenyour solicitor will obtain copies of your titledeeds either from HM Land Registry or willobtain your unregistered title deeds packet. Acontract will then be prepared setting out theterms upon which you sell the property toinclude details of the seller and the buyer, adescription of the property and of course theprice. Your solicitor will also request that youcomplete a Property Information Form which isa general questionnaire about your propertyand also a Fittings and Contents Form todetail which fixtures and fittings are includedor excluded from the sale. If your property isleasehold then there will be furtherquestionnaires to complete dealing with thingssuch as service charges, buildings insuranceand rent payments. There are usually enquiries raised by your

buyer’s and their solicitors which will be dealtwith as received. Once your buyers are readyto proceed then you will usually meet with yoursolicitor to sign the contract before contractsare exchanged, thus legally committing you tosell the property and complete on an agreedcompletion date thereafter. The completion date is the date upon whichthe sale price will be paid by the buyer’ssolicitor to your solicitor. If there is a mortgageto be redeemed then your solicitor will redeemthat mortgage directly by way of electronicfunds transfer with the lender concerned. Yoursolicitor would also normally obtain your estateagent’s account, approve it with you and thensettle it on your behalf. The funds that are dueto you are then normally be transferred to yourbank account by electronic funds transfer or ifyou prefer by cheque.

On the day of completion you must vacate theproperty if you have not done so before. Youwill need to take meter readings and informthe Local Authority for Council Tax purposesand the local water company for your wateraccount. You should also cancel yourbuildings insurance policy on or by the day ofcompletion. Mark Shepherd

Melton Mowbray Community First Responders50The Melton Mowbray Community FirstResponder (CFR) group provides voluntarysupport to the East Midlands Ambulanceservice (EMAS).When someone is suffering a potentially life-threatening illness, a member of the CFRgroup can often arrive before the emergencyambulance, as they all live in the area. In thesecases the 999 control desk will task the closestmember of the group to provide assistancewhilst the regular ambulance is travelling to thescene. In time-critical illnesses this can meanthe difference between life and death although,in the majority of cases, the early initialtreatment can provide relief or just ease thepatient’s suffering. This is not just a paper exercise; during 2014the group attended 1700 incidents, including18 cardiac arrests. The group was set up in April 2004 under theumbrella of St John Ambulance (SJA), whichprovided equipment, training and support to themembers. Although this arrangement hasworked well for almost 11 years, a mutualagreement between EMAS, SJA and the CFRgroup agreed that the group would benefit bybeing affiliated directly under EMAS rather thanSJA. This transfer took place on the 1st March.

To ensure that there was no disruption to ourservice, all equipment provided by SJA hasbeen transferred to the group.Under the new arrangement with EMAS, somemembers of the group have elected to undergofurther training this will increase their range ofskills enabling them to attend to a wider rangeof incidents, including young children andminor accidents. This will be a great benefit tothe community. The move away from SJA has increased theneed for the group to raise its own funds.Although the ambulance service replaces allconsumables we do need to provide our ownequipment, including the defibrillators. Oncethe members have received their enhancedtraining they will need additional equipment tocarry out their new skills. We also need to startplanning the replacement of the olderdefibrillators, as the batteries and pads willshortly be going out of production. We are currently looking for someone to jointhe group with the specific role of helping us toraise funds. 51Why you shouldn't use spreadsheets as databasesAll too often spreadsheets are used incorrectlyas a database. Spreadsheets are incrediblyuseful tools in their own right but they shouldnot be used as a substitute for a database.Simultaneous user access, data security, normalisation and validation are some of thereasons why a database is the correct softwareto use when storing, accessing andmanipulating data.

Spreadsheets only allow single user access atany given time - if more than one user needs toedit the data within a spreadsheet they need toeither wait for the first user to finish or make acopy of the spreadsheet. Copies lead to allsorts of problems when it comes to mergingthe data back together again.

Spreadsheet security is very basic: protectingyour sensitive data requires a proper securitymodel. A database will provide you with this.

Data stored in spreadsheets is flat. It is held ina single table and any duplicate data must becopied on each row. Just use the example ofone customer with multiple orders. Each time anew order is added to the spreadsheet thecustomer's address needs to be re-entered.What happens if their address changes? Eachrelevant cell of each relevant sheet related tothat customer would need to be updated withthe new details.

Relational databases can have many tables;rows from different tables can reference eachother so there is no need for duplicate data.Data validation in spreadsheets is very limitedat best. Databases can carry out very complexdata validation if needed. This will ensure thedata going into your tables is being heldcorrectly and is as you would expect it to be.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show,(CES) held in Las Vegas is where all thetop trends for the coming year are shown. So what’s coming our way in 2015?

TVs : screen sizes aregetting bigger and bigger, with resolutions increasingtoo: if you thought TrueHD was impressive, 4KUltra HD offers twice thepicture quality. Some firms are also trying toconvince us that curved screens are the wayforward, but so far such screens appear to belittle more than a gimmick. We’re much moreenthusiastic about firms using OLED (OrganicLED) displays, which deliver amazing coloursand deep blacks while using relatively tinyamounts of energy. Also on the TV front is Android TV, Google’sthird attempt to take over our living rooms. All2015 Sony Bravia TVs will have Android TVinside to deliver the usual Netflix and iPlayerservices plus specially developed Androidapps and games, and lots of other TV firmsare making Android TV sets too, and separate

Android TV boxes.

Fitness technology andwearable computing: Bragi’s“The Dash” manages to pack fitness trackinginto a tiny pair of wireless headphones, andwe saw endless fitness tracking bands andsmartwatches from the likes of Withings andSony. We even saw a smart belt: Belty, whichautomatically adjusts its fit as yourmeasurements change and which tells yourphone whether you’re getting bigger orsmaller.

Photography accessories :One of the oddestgadgets is the Belfie stick. You may haveheard of Selfie Sticks, which enable you totake selfies by sticking your phone on a longpole and shooting yourself from a distance;the Belfie stick is an evolution of that idea, designed to take selfies showing your bum.

Virtual reality : headsets were everywhereand 2015 should see the likes of theFacebook-owned Oculus VR, Sony’s ProjectMorpheus and similar sets from firms such asMicrosoft taking gaming and movies into anew dimension. VR has been overhyped for

Tech trends for 2015

Page 53: Melton Messenger March 2015

53years, but in 2015 it’ll actually start to deliveron its promises - first for gamers butultimately for everyone. For example onFacebook where you can see your friendswhen you talk to them?

Transportation ideas : Mercedes Benz wasshowing off a particularly stunning self-drivingcar concept, but there were plenty of smallertransporters too. There was Onewheel, askateboard with an electric-powered wheel inthe middle and clever technology to keep youbalanced; the GenZe, Inu and Ecorecolightweight electric scooters; that looks like a

shrunkenSegway andwhich cantravel 20Km at20Km/h on asingle charge. The devicesdiffer in howthey look and

work, but they all have the same aim: to getus out of our cars and onto cleaner, moreeco-friendly transport. Or of course you couldalways walk.

The Budget ison 18th Marchand the tax yearends on EasterSunday(5th April).

This year’s Budget will take place within afortnight of Parliament winding up ahead ofthe general election on 7 May. That meanslittle time to pass legislation, so there maybe another Budget (of some sort) after theelection – as occurred in 2010. So whenyou’re undertaking year end planning for2014/15, you also need to keep an eye onpossible pre-election tactics, too.

Among the items to review on theinvestment front are:

Individual savings accounts (ISAs) Themaximum ISA investment in 2014/15 is£15,000 and, following last year’s Budgetchanges, there are no restrictions on howmuch of this limit you can invest in cash.Unused ISA allowances cannot be carriedforward, so you should normally contributeas much as possible each tax year. Achange of government might see someerosion of tax benefits of ISAs. In 2013 theTreasury examined the option of cappingtheir value and the idea could be revisitedby a new Chancellor.

Capital gains tax (CGT) In the 2014/15 taxyear you can realise gains of up to £11,000with no capital gains tax liability. And once2015/16 begins on 6 April you will haveanother £11,100 annual exemption to use.If you have the gains, then using both years’exemptions could be a wise precaution: both

Labour and the Liberal Democrats havefloated the idea of CGT reform. You cannotsimply sell and then immediately repurchasethe same investment to crystallise a gain, but there are other options which havesimilar effect.

Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)andEnterprise Investment Scheme (EIS)These high risk investments can be animportant element of year end planningbecause of the initial 30% income tax reliefand other tax benefits they offer.

The value of your investment can go down as well as upand you may not get back the full amount you invested.Past performance is not a reliable indicator of futureperformance. Investing in shares should be regarded asa long-term investment and should fit in with your overallattitude to risk and financial circumstances. The value oftax reliefs depends on your individual circumstances. Taxlaws can change. The Financial Conduct Authority doesnot regulate tax advice.

The popularity of cycling hasbeen enhanced bytrailblazing athletes such asSir Bradley Wiggins, who hasachieved elite status as aprofessional cyclist on bothtrack and road, but this newtrend is also driven by healthconcerns.Sport England claims thatover 2.1 million peoplecurrently cycle on a weekly basis in the UK,and in the autumn of last year the governmentpublished a draft version of its Cycling DeliveryPlan for consultation, giving details of a 10-yearstrategy that includes the ambition to doublethe amount of cycling activity on Britain’s roadsby the year 2025.So where do you start if you have decided totake up cycling for the first time? Will you beusing your bike for transport, for leisure or forcompetition? A local specialist cycling shop willno doubt give you some excellent advice!Budget is another important factor. Noteveryone can afford to buy models such as thenew, lightweight carbon framed bicycles, whichcan cost up to £1,000. An old bike can fit thebill provided you’re not competing in the Tourde France or planning any off-road trekking, butif you’re buying second hand it’s advisable toget your bike serviced to ensure that it isroadworthy.Once you have bought your bicycle, you’ll needto acquire some basic skills. How to signal, howto ride in traffic, how to do an emergency stopand even how to change a tyre: these are allessential things to learn before you set out on abusy road. On the British Cycling website(www.britishcycling.org.uk) you can search fora local Bikeability course, designed to teachyou the skills you need to ride confidently ontoday’s roads.Britain’s network of cycle lanes and paths issteadily growing, and cycling is now a muchsafer activity than it used to be, although urbancyclists often complain of cycle lanes being toonarrow, or the layout stopping abruptly.Cycling is a great leveller and these days youcan expect to meet anyone - from your localbobby to a millionaire pop star - getting aroundon two wheels. These new converts to thecycling revolution understand that cycling notonly benefits their physical and mental healthbut also helps the environment by cuttingcarbon emissions.

Nordic Walking isa whole body exercise that can be enjoyed atmany levels, from walking for health to athleticNordic Walking challenges. How will it benefit my body?Nordic Walking combines walking with simulta-neous core and upper body conditioning, simi-lar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full bodyworkout, which means that you:•burn up to 46% more calories compared towalking without poles•release tension in the neck and shoulders•improve your posture, gait and fitness•strengthen your back and abdominal muscles•reduce the impact on the jointsIs it for me?Nordic Walking is a very accessible activity andsomething that can be enjoyed by people of alldifferent fitness levels and abilities. It’s an idealactivity for people who haven’t exercised for awhile or who dislike traditional sports or gymactivities. The sporting year has got off to a great startwith some thrilling FA Cup shocks and AndyMurray reaching the final of the AustralianOpen. I wonder what the rest of 2015 willbring? The ICC Cricket World Cup takesplace in Australia and New Zealand(with the final on March 29) andsuch has been England’s one dayform we may actually be in for apleasant surprise for once undernew skipper Eoin Morgan. The Champions League hasreached its knock-out stages whilethe Six Nations (until March 21) ismade all the more important as it’sa World Cup year, too (more of thatlater). Can England get their full-strength first XV out on to the pitch?Lewis Hamilton will begin thedefence of his Formula One worldtitle at the Australian Grand Prix on March 15and we go racing at Cheltenham for the GoldCup on March 10-13 and at Aintree for theGrand National on April 11, betting slips (andpin!) at the ready. All eyes in the world of golf will be on Augustafor the US Masters from April 9-12 for the firstOpen of the year. Snooker’s big moment in thespotlight will come with theWorld SnookerChampionship at The Crucible in Sheffieldfrom April 18 to May 4.Elite, club and charity runners will line up for theLondon Marathon on April 26 while athletic’sDiamond League begins on May 15 in Doha. It’s a big year for those dreaming of Olympicglory in Rio in 2016 with theWorldChampionships in Beijing from August 20-30.The Premier League reaches its climax on

May 24 (will Leicester City survive?) and a team- sadly not mine - will lift the FA Cup on May30. Another team - maybe mine?! - will win theChampions League in Berlin on June 6.In rugby will anyone be able to stop Toulon

winning a third European title onthe trot by the time theChampions Cup final comesaround on May 2? And willLeicester Tigers reach thePremiership final at Twickenhamon May 30?In tennis, will 2015 be Murray’syear? It will be strawberries andPimms all the way in SW19 fromJune 29 to July 12 for the AllEngland Championships atWimbledon. For me the summer will all beabout the Ashes (First Test July8-12) but the Tour de France

(July 4-26), The Open at St Andrews (July 16-19) and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone(July 5) may be welcome distractionsdepending on how England performs out in themiddle! The most exciting sporting event of 2015,though, promises to be the Rugby World Cupwhich will lead the sports news bulletins for sixweeks from September 18 to October 31. Thereare three pool games in Leicester. New Zealandwill start as favourites but England can win ifthey believe and make home advantage count.

I wonder how will your sporting year will turnout? Whatever your goals, remember we’rehere to help and, one thing is for certain, you’llalways be able to get the latest scores!

I have suffered with Raynaud’s (poorcirculation in the fingers) for decades, which isnot great for someone working out of doors. Ihave an assortment of gloves – warmwoolly ones, basic (usually filthy)‘gardening’ gloves for mucky jobs, waterproof ski mittens for breakingand removing ice on water troughs –but I still get digital ulcers which areslow to heal. Unfortunately one ofthese became badly infected and myGP prescribed antibiotics, the first Ihave had for years, which quickly andefficiently did their job, along withregular attention to dressings fromthe MTU team at Latham House(thank you!)

The last couple of generations havebeen blessed with the discovery anddevelopment of a range of antimicrobials andwe need to guard these precious tools in ourarmoury. Everyone has a shared responsibilityin this – the public in not demanding them, andthen taking them as instructed, and healthprofessionals in not over-prescribing.

As users of antimicrobials, the agriculturalindustry also has a responsibility and it is onethat we take seriously. As livestock keepers,we keep our stock as healthy as possible andtry to prevent infection in the first place.Calves are born with no immunity to diseaseand it is therefore essential to ensure that theyare fed a good quantity of high qualitycolostrum soon after birth, typically minimum 3litres within 6 hours. We test ours with acolostrometer to ensure that it has high levelsof immunoglobulins, which are then absorbedfrom the gut into the bloodstream to help thecalf fight infections. Getting colostrummanagement right makes a massivedifference to the future health of that animaland is key in reducing the need for

antimicrobials. Unfortunately it may meanbottle feeding a calf at 2am in the morning, butthere is no better investment of effort.

Then we can use vaccinations to boostimmunity against disease. Viruses of coursedo not respond to antibiotics, but often a viralinfection can lead to secondary bacterialinfection – as in the case of calf respiratorydiseases, for which vaccines are available.

When we do need to resort to antibiotics, these are prescribed by our vets and we value

their expertise in choosing themost appropriate product whichwill do the job whilst minimisinguse of the most precious tools;later generation antibiotics andthose used in protecting humanhealth. Most importantly, asmany doses are weight-dependent, we judge theappropriate volume and thenadminister the full course;resistance is most likely todevelop with under-dosing, notover-dosing. Finally, we need tomake sure we record all usageand observe withdrawal periods

to ensure that residues do not enter the foodchain, which is constantly monitored; forexample, a sample is taken from our milkevery time the tanker collects. At our vetreview, we look at annual usage to see if it isindicative of a problem with our husbandry.

The industry is signed up to the UK’s 5-yearstrategy against antimicrobial resistance andhas its own industry alliance, RUMA(www.ruma.org.uk), which is focusing on thistopic. The National Office for Animal Health(www.noah.co.uk) also takes a leading role inensuring responsible use. Together, we needto ensure that we do not waste these preciousjewels that are so essential to animal andhuman health.
