Dear all...A Clean Spring?

It’s spring cleaning time. However, busy families today are lucky to manage a deep clean even once a year, it is far more of an aspiration than a reality. My grandmother used to do it. For her, baking, cleaning, sewing and knitting were her work and her everyday focus, all year round. Today’s busy families have to share out housework and fit it in around everything else they do, and so dusting and polishing tend to have a very low priority indeed. I once went to baby sit for a friend. I’d had an unbelievably bad day, I was in a bad mood and was full of bottled up anger. I needed to pace around rather than sit and relax. So I got a cleaning cloth, and while she was out, I took my frustration and anger out on her furniture and windows, praying about it as I worked. She was a busy mother, window cleaning and polishing woodwork rarely got a look in, so she was utterly delighted on her return. I had a sense of satisfaction and achievement, and I had dealt with my anger in a very productive way (although not in my own house!).

Cleaning and tidying, “bottoming a room” as my grandmother would say, has a spiritual side to it. Layers of dust get in the way of the light, and the shine becomes dull. Shine in me. Yes Lord, I can sing it, but to get a shine you sometimes need to get out the dusters and polish.

Spiritually, a spring clean during Lent wipes away at our layers of cynicism and gets us ready for the radiance and brilliance of the new light of Easter, so when hope shines, we can reflect it out to the world. A bit like how clean windows and dusted furniture sparkle in the bright spring daylight, we can too. Lent is the time to get on and do it.

So if you are tempted to do a little spring cleaning and pick up a duster in March, say a little prayer as you start, asking God to wipe away at the dust inside, so you can sparkle too.

April – lambs, daffodils, greenery and spring – AND ST GEORGE!

St. George – a martyr for the Christian faith, and adopted by the English as their Patron Saint (April 23rd) that we too might be inspired and uphold the same faith for all time.

Our first Coffee Morning in 2013 was held in the Old Boys’ Free Grammar School and was a success both socially and financially, and we hope members of the congregation will support the next one which will be held at the same venue on Wednesday 6th March.

The annual Lunch at Morecambe Golf Club, held on Shrove Tuesday, was once again a very popular event with over sixty members enjoying each other’s company and a delicious meal. We do thank Kathy Edwards for making the arrangements.

Mothers’ Union members worldwide are united in prayer every day by the ‘Wave of Prayer’. Members pray for their fellow members in dioceses around the world and this month Holy Trinity MU members, as part of the Blackburn diocese, met for “The Seeds we Sow” Service ,when members learned of the work being done by the Mothers’ Union in the links we have with dioceses abroad.

In Ibadan North, Nigeria, there is a students’ hostel funded by the MU and a mobile health clinic which is taken to rural areas. In the Diocese of Free State, Southern Africa, the MU works with HIV/AIDS patients and orphans through the After Care Programme and in the Diocese of Sekondi, Ghana, the MU run a school and nursery as well as providing travel for workers to go to villages to give

marriage counselling and adult literacy classes. In the Diocese of Nsukka, Nigeria. the MU is campaigning to improve the rights of women and to prevent the exploitation of children whilst in the Diocese of Shyogwe, Rwanda, there are training sessions in discipleship, leadership, savings and credit, in efforts to promote family health, both physical and spiritual.

In her address, Mrs Betty Scott from Inskip, gave part 2 of her life story in which she gave details of the work she has done on her many visits to Shyogwe in recent years. Her first visit was soon after the horrific genocide when thousands were murdered, and she was greatly impressed by how forgiving the people were. During her last visit in 2010, at the age of 82, she helped a rural community to get machinery to juice the abundant supply of pineapples and now it is sold in packaging bearing the MU logo.

The service was conducted by Mrs Janet Thompson.

We look forward to giving our “Make a Mother’s Day” gifts on Mothering Sunday, and our next meeting is on 20th March when the Revd Linda Macluskie will take as the title of her talk “Crocuses, Cabbages and Corfu” by which time Pam will be back at the helm!

Bolton-le-Sands Bowling ClubThe 2013 season commences on Saturday 23rd March, and new members are welcome to join us in club play. Permits are available from Secretary, Geoff Forrest, 30 Broadlands Drive (824346) or from Sands News at Londis on the Coastal Road. Full permits cost £40, social permits £27 and winter permits £15. Competitive matches are held alternate Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Thursday afternoons. (Veterans leagues operating on Mondays and Thursdays and a ladies league on Wednesdays). Evening competitive matches are held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with cup matches generally played on some Thursday evenings.

Important dates for your diary : This season, the Club will be hosting several open events. The first of these is the Mike Rigby Open Pairs on Sunday 14th April, from 9.30am. Severallocal businesses have given generously to sponsor the event, which attracts bowlers top bowlers from a wide area, having proved for several years to be a most popular opening event in the area, attracting 32 pairs. A few places are still available from our organiser on 824346 .Any proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Unique Kidz, a very worthy local charity, which supports young people with disabilities. Come along and watch even if you are not a bowler. In May, North Lancs and Fylde Bowling League has an individual event for both men and women – The Jean and John Isherwood Over 60’s; for further details please contact Alan Swindlehurst, on 824128, who will be running this open event on Saturday 11th May. Later in the month, on Wednesday 29th, an all ladies doubles event will be held, followed on Wednesday 29th August by another ladies social gathering – for further details of both these events contact Margaret Coward, President of the local ladies league, on 823705.

Internal Club Tournaments are to be held on several Sundays throughout the year – 12th May, 30th June, 4th August and 15th September. These will commence with bowling at 1.30pm, followed by a Jacob’s Join, with barbecue/hot pot – details to be arranged.

Improvements to surrounds of ‘top green’ Much work has been done around this green of late to make the area more environmentally friendly and safe. The gullies have been strengthened and the surrounding paths improved. Work is still going on, courtesy of the local lengthsman, Mike Ashton, working in conjunction with the Parish Council. Alan Swindlehurst is working to improve the playing serface, which is to be used for some of the Open Tournaments already mentioned. Social bowlers will find this area much improved when using this green, when the main green is in use.

Celebration of Life” Choral ConcertThe Rotary club of Carnforth is putting on a choral concert at St Oswald’s Church in Warton, at 7pm on Saturday 16th March, that features the K Shoes Male Voice Choir (Kendal) and Ladies of Note. The Concert title “Celebration of Life” is to celebrate the lives of loved ones lost and to remind us through the music and voices in the choirs, just how great it is to be here. The K Shoes Male Voice choir’s pieces reflect this completely, and the Ladies of Note programme includes songs about love and the weather - being something none of us can escape! We feel sure that the joined choirs rendition of ‘Singing in the Rain’ will bring a smile to everyone’s face. Tickets are £8, including refreshments afterwards; from Carnforth Rotary 01524 734722, the Choirs, Inner Wheel, or on the door. All net proceeds will go to North West air Ambulance.

Men’s GroupThe monthly meeting of the Men’s Group took place in the Old Boys’ School on 11th February, when the speaker was Mike Craddock. His subject was “From a Skip to a Pearl”, and it gradually was revealed why that was the title of the illustrated talk.

Instead of having a campervan, Mike and his wife decided to have a boat on the Lancaster Canal. They found one for sale at Carnforth at an affordable price, but it smelled of cigarettes and was old fashioned inside. They looked at other boats, decided that they liked a cruiser stern, and bought a nearly finished hull. A colour was chosen, involving Mike’s wife, and then came the name. ‘Oyster’, Carnforth was decided upon after their Pearl Wedding Anniversary.

‘Oyster’ arrived at Carnforth on 28 July 2009. It weighed around 12 to 13 tons and was lifted by crane and lowered into the water. Mike did worry about a ‘risk assessment’ when the saw his boat up in the air, but all went well and it was lowered into the water.

Fitting out followed, Mike doing the work. With all the timber etc around on the inside, waiting to be fixed, Mike felt that ‘Oyster’ looked like a builder’s skip. Anyway, he worked on the boat, fitting the timber, fitting a kitchen unit, cooker, shower and everything else. By August 2011 the work was all done, and what had been like a skip was then a pearl.

The next meeting of the Men’s Group will be the Annual General Meeting on Monday March 10th in the Old Boys’ School.


Lent AppealThis year, the Lent Appeal at Holy Trinity will support the Food Bank, which was featured in the February Messenger. The Food Bank is seeded by The Tussel Trust which provides three days of crisis food for people and families who qualify.

Many of the recipients are low paid, working families who have hit financial problems when an extra repair bill or heating bill arrives. Long life and tinned produce with a three months minimum shelf life are required, please.

Leaflets at the back of church give full details of suitable items for donation. Please give generously, and also pray for these families over the coming month.

AGM of the Lower LunesdaleJanuary 30th saw the AGM of the Lower Lunesdale Trefoil Guild. Judith Spotswood is our newly elected chairman.

After the formalities of the AGM, our speaker, Susan Rae told us about her involvement with the Kenyan Project. Her involvement had begun when a friend showed her a three minute you tube, video clip, highlighting the plight of abandoned babies and children in Kenya. Being a person who enjoys art and craft, she decided to make and sell things to raise money for what was then New Life Homes Trust. It all snowballed from there.

Her first Art and Craft Fair at The Memorial Hall, Slyne, was very successful, with many people eager to make items to donate for sale. Items were also made and taken to the home in Kenya through the kindness of Stuart who went out there on business.

Two other organizations Education for Life and a baby rescue centre in Mombasa came to the attention of the now growing numbers of supporters and it was decided to amalgamate giving to all three charities under the name of Kenyan project. There are now regular meetings at the Memorial Hall Slyne, to sew, knit, crochet and make blankets in order to help the project.

Dear friends...As I write this letter it’s half term, we are just at the beginning of Lent and the weather is glorious. It has been a long grey winter and it’s good to see the sun and know that the children and teachers on half term holiday will be able to get out and about and enjoy the first signs of Spring.

As you read this letter we will be half way through Lent and our Thursday morning Lenten Reflections on The Servant King based upon words of Jesus and images produced by Christian Aid.

‘The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve’. Matthew 20:28In Jesus we find not just a servant but also a king. He fulfils two strands of Old Testament prophecy from Isaiah. In Isaiah 11 we read of the promise of a king to be born ‘ from the stock of Jesse’ and in Isaiah 53 the mysterious servant who will be ‘despised and rejected’ and subject to untold suffering, in order that he might ‘make many righteous’. The idea of a king who also serves, and who suffers in serving, has been a source of strength to many Christians, especially those in countries where oppression and hardship are basic facts of life.

On Easter Day we celebrate the resurrection when the servant at last reclaims his full majesty. His resurrection offers to all of us a source of unending hope. Brian Wren puts it beautifully in this verse from his hymn ‘Great god your love has called us here.’

Commitment for Life The following has been received from Linda Meade re Bangladesh, to where our contributions are sent:

The three Harirampur villages in which Christian Aid works are some of the most vulnerable to floods in the area. In the most affected parts, 28 per cent of the community are at risk of losing their homes and land because of river erosion. Fifty-seven per cent of households live in extreme poverty, and their lack of land exacerbates this.

To tackle this, Christian Aid supported partner Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) to undertake participatory vulnerability and capacity assessments (PVCAs). A PVCA helps people to reach a shared understanding of their situation and the changes that they need, and to identify appropriate, sustainable ways to bring these about. It allows people to analyse their problems and suggest solutions, drawing on their strengths and capabilities.

With support from local organisations and authorities, households are raising well-heads and houses above flood level, establishing tree nurseries to offer flood and storm protection, and developing new ways to earn a living. People are earning more and are less likely to experience food shortages since they started growing more flood- and drought-resistant crops and using more organic farming techniques. They are more knowledgeable, assertive and united, and feel able to contact local authorities to find out about, and use resources and services. Protests prevent British mining company GCM visiting mine site in Bangladesh – director resigns.

Massive protests against British mining company GCM Resources prevented the company’s CEO visiting the site of its proposed open-pit coal mine in Bangladesh last week. One of the company’s directors resigned the following day. CEO Gary Lye was due to visit Phulbari on 29 January, where GCM wants to open a mine that would displace up to 220,000 people.

Mr Lye had planned to distribute blankets to people living in the area, according to the local press. Thousands of people joined protests against the mine, and Lye abandoned his visit on official advice. One of GCM’s directors, Graham Taggart, resigned on Wednesday. The company’s largest shareholder, Polo Resources, has announced that it is considering selling its 29.77% stake in the company.

A Bangladeshi parliamentary committee has also spoken out against GCM, claiming that that the company does not have a valid agreement with the Bangladeshi government to proceed with the mine.

The British mining company has faced sustained opposition to its planned mine. Three people were killed and around 200 injured when paramilitary officers opened fire on protestors in 2006. World Development Movement campaigner Christine Haigh said “The Phulbari mine would devastate hundreds of thousands of lives, destroying valuable agricultural land and causing irreparable environmental damage. It’s high time GCM listened to the massive sustained opposition in Bangladesh and abandoned the project.” www.wdm.org.uk

Here’s a little story, I found that I thought had an important message.

It was a cold wet day and the couple had just got home after the christening of little Sarah Louise, their friends’ new baby granddaughter. “I suppose it rather silly of me, Francis”, said his wife, as they relaxed in front of the fire, “but whenever I go to a christening, it always makes me wonder what I would give a child if I was a fairy godmother”. “Riches, beauty”, jokingly her husband suggested. “No”, she replied firmly, “it would be the gift of being able to appreciate small pleasures. You know we’re often so busy wishing away our lives until the next big event, things like holidays or special treats, that we forget to enjoy the simple day to day delights such as good company or a warm fire on a cold day. I do hope little Sarah Louise has many pleasures in her life, but even more than that, I hope she will remember to cherish all of them.”

The proceeds will go towards a project which is aiming to raise £7500 to sink a borehole, build a well, install a solar powered pump, and erect storage tanks for a drought-stricken village in Hwange, Zimbabwe. At present, women and their babies and young children face a daily nine-mile round trip to collect drinking water. They struggle to water their crops and animals, so life is very bleak. Bolton-le-Sands WIOur Tuesday meeting on 12th February proved to be a bit special for a number of reasons.

Firstly we welcomed two new members. We also had a number of visitors, so along with many members the Village Hall was full. A good many members had had birthdays to celebrate dur-ing February and good wishes were also sent to Pat Forrest who had celebrated her Golden Wedding. It was good to see Pauline Sterritt, as she was well enough to come along, and she was pleased to be able to thank members for their kind wishes of support. We also heard about Jennifer Fothergill, who had fallen off her bike and could not come, although she managed to win the competition, so well done Jennifer and hope to see you at our next meeting.

We had interesting report backs from the leaders of the various Interest Groups which have been recently formed. We have Judith Spotswood (Crafts), Jean Bayliss (Walking) and Dorothy Car-ruthers (Flower Arranging). Watch this space for news on a “Knit and Natter” Group, possibly meeting at the Blue Anchor. It is hoped to arrange a trip to Martin Mere Bird Sanctuary on 16 April. Dorothy Carruthers made leaflets available on the update of plans to build dwelling on the Coastal Road.

The main event of the evening was a cookery demonstration by `The Inspiration from Sainsbury`s Try Team`. Helen and Zoe worked very hard with entertaining chat and culinary expertise. It was an evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the members.

Hazel Short gave full details of the sound advice shown to her by Steve Turner of the Lanca-shire Fire and Rescue Service about safety in the home. A full safety check can be carried out by the Fire Service on request, and Hazel said that after Steve Turner`s visit to her home she could well recommend this service.

Lent AppealThis year, the Lent Appeal at Holy Trinity will support the Food Bank, which was featured in the February Messenger. The Food Bank is seeded by The Tussel Trust which provides three days of crisis food for people and families who qualify.

Many of the recipients are low paid, working families who have hit financial problems when an extra repair bill or heating bill arrives. Long life and tinned produce with a three months minimum shelf life are required, please.

Leaflets at the back of church give full details of suitable items for donation. Please give generously, and also pray for these families over the coming month.

Musical NotesI hope that many people will have heard, and enjoyed or even been moved by the recent efforts of the Church choir. I believe that now we are beginning to produce a good sound which praises God in the way that He should be praised. We are limited, however, by the lack of bass voice singers, indeed by men in general and we could do with a few more altos. If anyone could volunteer to be the accompanist, that would be splendid.

If you are thinking of Lenten discipline, how about giving up some time to join the choir, which practices on Wednesday evenings in Church between 7pm - 8pm. No previous experience is necessary and you would be really helping us. We range in age from teenager to nonagenarian, and in experience from none to vast.

It has been known for people to actually enjoy choir practice! We try to sing at Morning Service on the first Sunday of the month as well as at festival times. I f you are considering joining us, please have a word with me, or any choir member soon – so that we will have enough people to do Bach’s St. Matthew Passion !?

Incidentally I am trying to give up playing wrong notes on the organ for Lent – just for Lent you understand – you’ll be able to hear how it goes.

Bolton-le-Sands Village Website A new website for the village has recently come on line, with the address : www.boltonlesandsvillage.org.uk. The website contains information about the village and its amenities, news and events, and has a useful link to Bolton-le-Sands Parish Council, where you can find more information about the work of the Parish Council.

Council Meetings are held in the Old Boy’s Free Grammar School at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each Month (except for August). Members of the public are entitled to attend these meetings, and may address the Council at the discretion of the Chairman. Planning Application matters are normally discussed, in Committee, at the end of each meeting.

Bolton-le-Sands is divided into two wards; North Ward has 7 Parish Council seats, and South Ward has 3 seats. Residents living to the south of the middle of Slyne Road and ByePass Road are represented on the Lancaster District Council by Slyne-with-Hest Councillors.

The current Chairman of the Parish Council is Keith Budden, who has been a Parish Councillor since 1987. Keith also represents Bolton-le-Sands North on Lancaster District Council, and served as Mayor in 2008/09. The Vice-Chairman is Mike Craddock, who became a Parish Councillor in 2008.

Dance Crazy 2013The students of the Alysia Gilda School of Dance, which is based in Bolton-le-Sands, will be appearing at The Grand Theatre, Lancaster on Sunday 24th March. With routines to suit every musical taste - from Grieg to Glenn Miller, from hornpipe to hip hop - the dancers who are aged from 4 years to adults, present a showcase of our local talent.

Thwaite Brow Woods Conservation GroupThe Conservation Group consists entirely of volunteers, and a working party group meets once a month at 10.00am and/or 1.45pm, by the canal bridge at Whin Grove.

New members are always welcome; just wear appropriate clothing and bring your own gardening gloves. During February, the group met to clear out and repair the 35 or so nest boxes that are maintained in the woods, and to put up some new boxes. There will be additional boxes for robins and nuthatches due to last year’s successes.

The next working party will be on Sunday March 10th, when there will be the usual litter picking and repairs to any damage which has come to light recently. Sadly, there has been quite a lot of vandalism over recent months, and anyone who spots an incident is asked to contact CrimeStoppers free on 0800 555 111.

Bible ExplorerAfter the half-term holiday, our Year 5 and Year 6 children will be experiencing ‘Bible Explorer’ lessons with Mr James Bovenizor from the Faith Mission.

Community Playground ProjectFurther to the Public Meeting held in the Old Boys School on December 1st 2012, the Community Playground Project (or CCP) has now been formed. The committee members include Emma Bousfield, Bob Bond, Keith Budden, Dani Khan, Linda Leak, Cath Morris and Andrew Parker.

This group has come together with the aim of raising funds to redevelop the village playground. The playground/recreation area is very well used but the equipment is aging and the design dated. Local children have been consulted to help determine the design of the playground. The CCP have commissioned with support from Lancashire County Council, a local award winning playground designer to guide the design development and create a fun place for the children and families of the village.
