Theological Seminary. A recurring theme in the Bible is the call to “Be holy as God is holy.” What does this mean? How do we become holy in a way that is welcoming and hospitable rather than self-righteous and hostile? Each Sunday we will explore a different dimension of holiness.

From the Rector: Chapman Morrow, Parish Development Officer

There are several different ways of being an Episcopal community. For example, a great friend of our parish is the Reverend Katherine Bush, who serves as the chaplain at St. Mary’s School. Katherine would want us to know they are—as a school—as Episcopalian as we are as a parish. And she is correct! I think about the Reverend Deacon Brent Powell, who regularly attends GSL and

is employed as a chaplain at St. Jude’s hospital. His work—in a remarkably diverse, non-churchy environment—is as Episcopalian as any Episcopal deacon’s or priest’s. Parishes and their clerics sometimes forget that we are but one form of Episcopal community. Nevertheless, parishes are the backbone of the Episcopal Church. Vital, creative parishes are what make vital, creative dioceses. Grace-St. Luke’s is a wonderfully vibrant parish with a bright future in Memphis. The Bishop and the Diocese of West Tennessee want and need for us to be healthy and wise. I love serving as a parish priest, but I really love serving as the rector of this particular parish. Grace-St. Luke’s is also a spiritual home for my own family. Katherine (my wife) and I can tell you countless stories—some achingly tender, some really funny—about how this particular parish has made an enormous difference in our spiritual lives as a family. More than any other institution or group in my life or Katherine’s life or in the life of our children, Grace-St. Luke’s Church is the community in which our family learns and remembers that God’s love in Christ is unconditional. And that our family cannot follow Christ in isolation.

For this reason, it’s as a parish that we celebrate the Eucharist, “a foretaste of the heavenly banquet” (in the words of the postcommunion prayer at burials in the Prayer Book). As an individual or as an individual family, we are invited by Christ to the heavenly banquet as a community, as a parish. Therefore, parish development matters as much as anything we do. With this in mind, I am delighted to announce that

Chapman Morrow has accepted the position of development officer at GSL, and she will begin work on April 1. Chapman is a parishioner, married to Chip Morrow, and they have a daughter, Mary Chapman, who is a very active member of our EYC. Chapman is also a lawyer, who recently completed her term as the president of GSL’s school board. She is going to work part-time for us, focusing on two areas: 1) launching planned giving at GSL and 2) growing our base of annual pledges to the parish. A number of different individuals and committees have helped me to see the need for this position. For example, both the Endowment and the Stewardship committees are delighted with this hire, as one might imagine, because these committees work strategically to ensure that Grace-St. Luke’s will be a vital parish in the 21st century and beyond. In the coming months, the parish will hear more from Chapman and from me about this work of parish development. Financial giving to this parish—whether through annual pledges or planned giving through wills or other creative gifts—is one of the most important ways that we pass on the message of Christ’s love and the beauty of the Episcopal tradition to future generations.

Third Thursday is excited to welcome Kacky Walton on Mar. 20. Kacky is WKNO’s classical music radio host extraordinaire…the smart, cheerful voice you hear every afternoon introducing the latest recording

from The London Symphony or the New York Philharmonic. She’s also one of the Checking on the Arts hosts who interviews local musicians, artists and theater folks about upcoming events. Kacky will share with us some good stories about her life, her 20 year career at WKNO, and some of her experiences on stage and the silver screen. Should be a fun night!

Third Thursday dinners are designed to include empty nesters and anyone else who wants to spend a fun evening with others. Come socialize over drinks and appetizers beginning at 6:30 pm in Trezevant Hall. Dinner is at 7:00, and the program follows. Stations of the Cross (Way of the Cross) also called the Via Dolorosa or Way of Sorrows, or simply, (The Way) refers to a series of sculptural artistic representations depicting Christ carrying the cross to his crucifixion in his final hours, and to devotions commemorating the Passion that use the series, moving physically to each of the 14 stations. At Grace St. Luke’s we observe the Stations each Friday during Lent at 5:00 pm. This brief service lasts approximately 30 minutes and everyone is invited to participate in this spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief scenes of sufferings and death and insults that Jesus endured during His Passion.

GSL Waits Tables At Calvary Waffle Shop On Mondays In LentThe parishioners of Grace-St Luke’s Church have been asked again to provide waitstaff on Mondays, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Among the perks of this job are wearing lovely monogrammed Grace-St. Luke’s aprons, serving your friends a delicious meal, and eating a free lunch!! What could be better?! A clipboard with sign up sheets is located at the information center in the hallway under the flatscreen monitor. Calvary would like for us to have eight servers on Mondays, so we’ll have lots of opportunities for all to help. We would love to have men who have available time to help. Also, if you would like to work on another day, please be sure to indicate GSL when you sign in. Each organization is paid $7.00 per worker per day, so the more servers, the more money we earn for outreach. Remember that Calvary will have a shuttle bus running every 10 minutes from St. Mary’s Cathedral, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Baseball & Softball Skill Assessments It’s baseball time and to get the season started we are having our annual Skill Assessments which is part of the baseball and softball registration process. This is not a tryout, but simply a way to more evenly divide the teams.

The Skill Assessments are for 1st- 4th graders who are registered to play baseball and softball. There are NO Skill Assessments for t-ball players.Who: All 1st - 4th graders registered for GSL baseball/softball. This is a required part of the registration process; all players need to attend.

When: Mar. 22 3rd and 4th Grade Girls, 1:30 pm–2:45 pm

March 4–Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper: Youth have the opportunity to participate with the GSL Crossmen in the annual Pancake Supper. Stay tuned for more info!

March 9–Spring Break. No EYC

March 16–More Than a Meal: Come participate in one of GSL’s great ministries by volunteering at More Than a Meal. Open to the first 15 middle school volunteers who sign up with Mary Margaret. We will meet in the church kitchen at 3 pm to help set-up, then serve our guests at 4, and clean up by 5. Advice Column: After MTAM, we will have a special EYC where each grade will get to give advice to the grade below. 5th graders are invited to get a sneak peek of what to expect next year! So come share your wisdom, play games, and enjoy time with friends.

The Lens of Lent: A New Way of Seeing the Other?

In the Litany of Penitence on Ash Wednesday, we say these words, “For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us, Accept our repentance, Lord.”

Are you grieving being at odds with another, be they a family member, co-worker or friend? One of the most common con-cerns shared with me is that of judgment – being judged and judging others. This behavior causes heartache and division. The resulting feeling of enmity sickens our souls and weakens the Body of Christ of which we are members.

For those of us struggling with the sin of judgment, whether on the receiving end and/or giving end, let our Lenten focus be on the call to self-examination and repentance specifically regarding judgment. I offer this poem as words to companion us during our Lenten journey and as a new lens through which to see the one with whom we may be at odds. The author is Tukaram, saint and spiritual poet during the Bhakti movement in India. The poem is from the book, Love Poems from God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West, by Daniel Ladinsky.

neWS oF BYGone daYS50 years ago (1964): In the recent Episcopal Basketball tournament, two of our teams, the Pee-wees, coached by Larry Busby, and the Seniors, coached by Judge Morgan Fowler, won second place trophies. At the 9:15 family service on Palm Sunday, the Pee-wees and Seniors, and their coaches, will be recognized, and their trophies received and added to our ever-growing collection. The players and coaches from all or our teams will be honored by the Crossmen’s Club at its April meeting, when they will be dinner guests. The Crossmen’s Club sponsors our athletics program.

25 years ago (1989): 50-Year Anniversary Committee- Dr. Riddle indicated that Janet Tate has agreed to chair this committee. She is in the process of requesting members of the Parish to serve on the committee. The committee should be formng shortly to organize the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the joining of Grace Church and St. Luke’s Church.

When you encounter a smiling woman in a red apron here at GSL, you’ve not only found a nursery employee, but also a valuable resource for anyone whose life is blessed (read: turned upside down) by a young child!

The Nursery at Grace-St. Luke’s is staffed by a wonderful group of professional, trained caregivers who truly do have the best interests of your child at heart each time we open our doors. Mothers, grandmothers, babysitters, catechists, and teachers (with years of experience and professional training) comprise our kind and capable team. We are here because we love children and we love watching all of our charges as they grow up!

We are well aware that as parents you are faced with many tough decisions. There are new school and new home transi-tions, new siblings, separation difficulties, feeding and meal times, sleep routines, potty training, and single parenthood are just some of the challenges we’ve navigated in our own lives, or helped other parents do so in theirs.

Perhaps you’re exploring childcare or school options, or won-der which parks and playgrounds are best outfitted for a little person your child’s age. Maybe you need know what questions to ask when looking for a new baby sitter. Whatever your chal-lenge, we’re here to help you.

And when you come and share your successes with us, we’ll have a ‘High-Five’ for you with your name on it!

If you’ve looked up in the chancel lately and wondered who else was hanging around the organ bench, he is none other than Grace-St. Luke’s new organ scholar, Ted Turner! Ted is from Chicago and is a sophomore music major at Rhodes Col-lege. As part of his GSL internship, he will be shadowing staff musicians Wesley Emerson and Debbie Smith at services and choir rehearsals before helping out with organ duties during services. Be sure to introduce yourself and give Ted a warm GSL welcome!

Four days before Christmas, Stephen, Matthew, and I drove to Fackler, Alabama to pick up a puppy. This was not uncharted territory for us, but Stephen and I had not had a puppy in a long time.

In fact, the last puppy Stephen and I had had was our Labrador, Cocoa. We were newly married and I decided I ‘needed’ a puppy. So, we looked in the Clarion-Ledger want ads, found a litter of chocolate labs, and set off for Goodman, Mississippi to pick her up. Cocoa was a sweet dog, but God did not bestow her with the largest brain. She thought—as near as I could tell—about food and sleep and food. I remember once Stephen and I went to a movie. We left Cocoa in the kitchen and when we came back (two and a half hours later) Cocoa had found a tiny crack in the flooring in our kitchen, and she had eaten the entire kitchen floor. And, by that I mean only the subfloor was left where there had only hours before been pretty pink and white linoleum. We called the vet.

We are feeling very thankful for technology this spring, as we implemented an online re-enrollment system for the first time this year. You may know that every year, we send out re-enrollment contracts to current families in mid-January, followed by new enrollment contracts to accepted applicants in mid-February. In the past, getting these paper contracts turned in was a somewhat difficult and arduous task, but not anymore! Our rate of re-enrollment was fantastic, jumping from 67% as of January 31 last year to 84% by January 31 this year. We hope for the same good rate of return with new enrollment contracts, and we are delighted to be able to offer our 350+ families a more efficient method of handling this important paperwork. When technology works, it’s really, really good!

On the more personal side of things, we are also grateful to you and to all of our GSL friends and family who continue to support or help promote this school within our community. Your positive word-of-mouth and testimonials are an invaluable help in encouraging new families to join our community. So you see, our growing enrollment is also due to the people who love us, and that is you! Thank you for your belief and faith in our school.

Now, I’m sure it’s no surprise that as the weather warms up, spring fever gears up! Our eighth graders have completed their annual three-day internships and will present reports at their Internship Project Presentation Fair on Monday, Mar. 3, at 7:00 pm in the Anchor Center. This is open to the public, and you are welcome to stop by if you’d like to learn more about the great places our eighth graders interned, which included local organizations such as LeBonheur, Channel 3, Playhouse on the Square, and the Mayor’s office, as well as businesses out-of-state, including New York Fashion Week, FILA Sportswear, and HBO!

At the end of the month, we host our annual 4th Grade Citizenship Breakfast on Mar. 26, at 8:00 am in Trezevant Hall. This is an important culminating experience for Lower School, much like the 8th grade internship project is for Middle School. In preparation for this event, fourth graders get the chance to use leadership, critical-thinking, and social skills to identify community leaders whom they consider good citizens; mail them invitation letters; and then greet them, serve them, and interact with them at a nice, sit-down breakfast at GSL. It’s always a lot of fun!

In between these two capstone events, we will recognize the beginning of Lent with our special all-school Ash Wednesday service on Mar. 5 at 8:05 am in the church; please feel free to join us. We will be closed for Spring Break on Friday, Mar. 7, and Mar. 10-14. And finally, we will end the month with our annual spring Middle School production. This year we offer you Dear Edwina Jr., running Mar. 27-29, at 7:30 pm in McClure Hall. Tickets will be available through the school office. We hope to see you!
