    Your Letters

Round up hoonsIn response to Rick Dobson’s letter I would like to say I am

with you 100%.We have hoons up our steet, Goodfellow Street — where bad

fellows drive 100kms plus and when asked by police to get theirlicence plate number, no they had vanished. Maybe becausethey were driving too fast.

Yes, we have kids up our street also.We can’t put a policeman on every bad street, but we can put

a speed camera up which will take photographs of the speedingcars and may even catch stolen cars.

The cost of the camera could be paid off with the fines thatcould be given out for reckless driving and speeding.

Or, we could simply ask the Council to put down judder bars,to slow down the traffic and if the car is lowered, the faster itgoes the more likely it will get damaged.

After living in Melbourne for four years, I saw the suburbanstreets with judder bars and speed cameras everywhere, inparticular on long streets and roads.

You had to be 18 years of age to drive a car by yourself inAustralia and there was a power to weight ratio, so small carscould not have large motors.

It was a very low trick totake it away. You could’ve justleft it on the front lawn. I have

Pair happy to support Poppy Day

TC290409CA02TE AWAMUTU College student Tara Henwood (16) meets RSA Associate memberBrian Jeans and his puppy ‘Miffy’ during poppy day in Te Awamutu on Friday.

    BY CATHY ASPLIN

Cambridge resident Brian Jeanscomes to Te Awamutu each year to helpwith Poppy Day and to attend DawnParade on Anzac Day.

This year Mr Jeans was based onArawata Street where he was takingdonations from the public.

He was wearing his late father’smedals and was accompanied by his 14month old Brussels Griffon puppy, Miffy.

‘‘Dad’s medals are from his servicewith the 35th Battalion. For many yearswe came to the Te Awamutu DawnParade together and so I have continuedto do that. I enjoy the company of thelovely people here.’’

He says the parade to the cenotaph isalways a moving experience as theymarch in silence.

‘‘That’s how it should be done.’’Mr Jeans believes Anzac Day is a time

to honour the sacrifices given by those inthe past and to also ensure a betterfuture.

‘‘I hope we never have another war -the number of people lost was plainstupidity and its only the war mongerswho will benefit if there’s another one.’’

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLENMembers of Te Awamutu RSA and the

public celebrated the opening of ‘InMemory of the Fallen’ at the Te AwamutuMuseum on Friday night.

The exhibition features a collection ofletters written home by local servicemanStuart Scott, sound clips from the NewZealand Sound Archives of Anzac storiesbroadcast on Spectrum Radio in the1950’s and a set of photographs from theCommonwealth War Graves Com-mission of cemeteries around the worldwhere New Zealand servicemen areburied or honoured.

Veteran Mike Subritzky moderatedthe ‘Readings for Anzac’ programme atthe Museum on Sunday.

Next month Auckland historian PhilBeattie will present a lecture/discussion— Military Genealogy — about usingmilitary resources for historical andgenealogical research.

This is at 7pm on May, 20 at theMuseum.

Harold hitting the trail toraise cash for classroom

TC280409SP05TRAIL BIKE experts Ilana Wilks and Mark Penny give Harold a few tips for theforthcoming Waipa King Country Life Education Trust fundraising Trail Ride.

A treat is in store this May for local trailbike enthusiasts when the Waipa KingCountry Life Education Trust holds afundraising trail bike ride on Sunday, May17.

The event will be held on a 20 kilometretrack which runs across the Pukeatuaproperties of John and Zoe Hunter, Johnand Margaret Sutton and Ewan McBeth.

One of the Trust’s key sponsors,Wilksbrooke Motors, is lending majorsupport for the event, including trail biketeam Ilana Wilks and her husband MarkPenny who’ll be organising riders on theday along with assessing and setting upthe track.

‘‘We’ve been very grateful for thesupport of Wilksbrooke and the propertyowners in putting the day together,’’ saysWKC Trust Chairman Bruce Carey.

Since the Trust’s mobile classroom wasextensively damaged in an arson attack inOctober last year, mascot Harold andEducator Nicky Wise have been borrowinga spare unit from the Trust’s nationaloffice.

‘‘Insurance is covering most of the costof our new classroom which should beready by June,’’ says Mr Carey.

‘‘But there’s still a $25,000 shortfallneeded to cover the cost of the classroom’smural, sponsor logos and classroomresources.’’

It’ll be a busy weekend for the Trustwhich is also hosting Life Education’sannual conference in Hamilton on thesame weekend.

Mr Carey says the trail ride willprovide a great day out for the wholefamily, with hot food and cold drinksprovided as well as a 5 kilometre kids’track.

Entry is on the day, $25.00 for adults and$10 for kids. Details are available fromMark Penny or Ilana Wilks at WilksbrookeMotors — 8713079 or [email protected] — or from theSilverbullet website(www.silverbullet.co.nz).

    PlaycentrescelebrateFamilies Day

Playcentres all around the countrywill be celebrating Families Day onMay 15 by doing what they have donebest for over 60 years — helpingfamilies to learn and grow together.

‘‘Playcentre offers something forthe whole family,’’ says PlaycentreFederation president, MarionPilkington. ‘‘The children can formlife long friendships while experienc-ing a well-designed learning environ-ment. Their parents also make lastingfriendships and have access to freeparent training and NZQA accreditedearly childhood training.’’

Families Day is based on a resolu-tion from the United Nations GeneralAssembly to promote the importanceof families and the issues relating tothem. The UN focus this year is onmothers and families: challenges in achanging world.

The Families Commission is pro-moting Families Day, and says thatthey also want everyone to stop andthink about why families matter — tothemselves, their communities and toall New Zealand society.

‘‘Parents do a great job of educatingtheir children,’’ says Mrs Pilkington.‘‘Playcentre is based on the philos-ophy of parents as first and bestteachers of their children, and itcomplements the education that par-ents provide for their children athome.’’

It is often not practical to provide awide variety of equipment at home.

Play activities at Playcentreinclude outdoor and indoor activitiessuch as: playdough, jigsaw puzzles, carpentry tables with real tools, sandpits and climbing equipment, books, musical instruments, dancingand dress-ups.

Cutting cloth to match budgetFor International Real Nappy Week this

year (April 27-May 3), the New ZealandNappy Alliance is proving to parents thatreusable cloth nappies are the smart budget-ing choice.

With more than 10,000 job losses in NewZealand over the past five months, manypeople are becoming concerned about provid-ing for their families. Budgeting services andfinancial experts are advising everyone toreduce spending as times get harder.

This advice is creating renewed interestin home economics and the values of thriftand economy. People are realising the bene-fits of rejecting raw consumerism, and goingback to reusing what they have rather thanrelying on so many disposable items.

‘‘As the financial pressure on our com-munity increases, we are noticing a hugenumber of families now opting to save moneyby buying reusable nappies. Parents can savethousands by choosing cloth nappies overdisposables, ’ ’ says Nappy Alliance

spokesperson, Kate Meads. On average it costs a family up to $5 a day

to keep one child in disposables from birth toage three. Compare this figure to that ofabout $1 a day (including washing costs) tokeep that child in cloth nappies for the sameperiod.

‘ ‘Recently, the Nappy Alliance(www.nzna.org.nz) has seen a huge increasein parents-to-be who lay-by their nappies assoon as they find out they are pregnant. Bythe time their baby arrives, they have all thenappies they will need until baby is potty-trained. There is also an increasing numberof friends and families purchasing vouchersor reusable nappies as baby gifts.

‘‘If parents saved the same amount eachweek they could expect to pay for disposablenappies for one child, it would only takearound 20 weeks of full-time use for the clothnappies to have paid for themselves, leavingmore money in their budget for the remain-ing 136 weeks baby is likely to be in nappies.’’

Teamwork, sustainability and profi tability will be some of the key issues discussed at a fi eld day on this year’s Supreme award-winning farm in the Waikato Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

Owned by Gray and Marilyn Baldwin and run with sharemilkersHamish and Jane Putt, the ‘Wuppertal Farming’ property, just west of Putaruru, was described by Award judges as an impressive operation founded on excellent working relationships “with sustainability in mind throughout the business”.

The Putts are in their second year sharemilking 410 cows on the farm, which is in conversion to organic certifi cation, and are targeting 160,000kgsMS production this season.

Waikato BFEA regional coordinator Gerry Glover says the May 5 fi eld day will cover a broad range of issues that will be of interest to people from a wide range of farm types.

Expert speakers will cover topics that include organic dairy farmmanagement and prospects, pastures and fertilisers, riparian planting and water quality.

Forestry will be another hot topic. While a big chunk of Wuppertal was converted from commercial forestry into pasture land, the farm now grows a wide range of trees planted either for shelter and shade, water protection and native bush rejuvenation, or for commercial production.

Another key focus is the all-important issue of sustainable farming.Gerry Glover says the Baldwins and Putts will share some of theirideas on how to successfully balance sustainability with the need togenerate a profi t.

The fi eld day on the Dukeson Road farm (signposted from Golf Road outside Putaruru) will start at 10am and fi nish with a lunch.

Prisoner’s escape plans thwartedCorrections today revealed that a

potential escape from Nikau Unit atWaikeria Prison last month was foiledbecause of the vigilance and timelyactions of staff.

‘‘It is extremely pleasing that staffwere alert to the potential of an escapeand quickly took steps to prevent ithappening,’’ says Waikeria SouthPrison Manager Kevin Smith.

‘‘A prisoner got his thumb stuckinside the cast on his arm during theevening. It is believed this occurredafter he tampered with it in an attemptto be taken on an escorted visit to a localmedical centre.

‘‘The nature of these eventsappeared to be unusual for that time ofthe day and it roused some suspicion

about a possible hidden agenda theprisoner may have had.

‘‘It’s not clear whether the prisonerwas preparing to abscond during themedical escort but the reservationsabout his behaviour led to furtherintelligence being gathered. Thissubsequently showed there was a veryreal risk that this prisoner was plan-ning some kind of escape. A search ofthe prisoner’s cell also uncovered asmall collection of extra sheets. It isbelieved he intended to use these in aneffort to scale the fence and get away.

‘‘The safety of the public is our toppriority so we are now working onincreasing and enhancing the unit’ssecurity features so that the possibilityof an escape is reduced further.’’

    Te Awamutu Golf celebrate

ASB Te Awamutu Golf can now boast state-of-the-art clubrooms and facilities to complement its sta-ble of rising junior star members.

Three years of extensive plan-ning and fundraising came to frui-tion on Friday when the revamped clubrooms were offi cially opened by club patron, Colin Green after being blessed by kaumatua, Char-lie Maikuku.

“The upgrade fi ts in nicely ahead of the club’s centennial celebra-tions at Easter, 2011,” Mr Green told those in attendance.

“The building project is a fi tting tribute to 100 years of Te Awamutu Golf Club.”

The lounge, kitchen, bar, offi ce and shop are now all under one roof.

New carpet and vinyl has been

laid throughout the building, heat pumps installed, bar upgraded and a new offi ce built for manager Helen Turner overlooking the 18th fairway.

The men’s and ladies’ changing rooms have had extensive make-overs - both blocks have two new showers, vanities, toilets and hot water run by gas. There is also a unisex toilet for the disabled.

The kitchen/cafe and lounge has been newly painted, as has the en-tire exterior of the clubrooms.

A newly installed sound proof, bi-fold door can separate the cafe area and the lounge when needed for smaller functions.

A new sound system and ‘50 inch’ coloured TV has been erected in the lounge, and the club has the most up-to-date computerised golf scoring system in Australasia.

Management committee chair-man, Andrew Brown says current club members have been superbly catered for over many years due to the foresight and selfl ess contribu-tion of previous club members.

  • Langman key to Magic attack

MCKEOWNPHOTOGRAPHYLAURA LANGMAN in possession for Magic in their recent ANZChampionship win over the Southern Steel.

An in form Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic midcourter LauraLangman holds the key to her team’s ANZ Championshipaspirations.

This was clearly evident in Magic’s last two outings againstthe type of suffocating Australian defence they will need toovercome consistently to run out champions of this competitionfor the first time.

Langman was, even by her own high standards, ‘magic’ in herteam’s 18 goal defeat of the playing through champions NewSouth Wales Swifts.

Those special comodities were not as prominent in anuncharacteristically flat performance by Langman and her fellowmidcourters in the heavy loss against the Queensland Firebirds. But form is temporary and class is always permanent, so look forLangman to bounce back quickly.

Heroics at both ends of the court from Irene van Dyk andCasey Williams in the opening rounds have largely pushed thelivewire Langman into the background. But chasing newboundaries, Langman, 23, has become instrumental in setting theColourplus Magic on a new course this year.

Bursting into the elite level as a multi-talented teenager, theflush of youth waned a little for Langman last season as she cameto grips with positional changes and the trappings that come withbeing an old hand despite tender years.

There has been a marked improvement in the Magic’sattacking play this year highlighted by patience and betteroption-taking with Langman the driving force.

‘‘I’m progressing in my attacking game,’’ she said.‘‘I wouldn’t mind being a little bit tighter on defence and help

contribute more to our defensive game but I’m happy with whereI’m at.

‘‘We’ve placed huge emphasis this year on all players reallyknowing their roles and that has contributed to us being morecool, calm and collected on attack and really dogged on defence.Looking at the quality of the other teams, no team gets away withjust having a few on defence and a few on attack, it’s all aboutseven on seven.’’

For coach Noeline Taurua the attack is a work in progress butshe is thrilled with Langman’s results to date.

‘‘Laura’s natural instincts are to do everything at 150 miles anhour — she trains that way, her brain thinks that way, she’sdoing study, she’s doing a bit of work — she’s got a lot going on,’’Taurua said.

‘‘Everything is always in forward momentum but at certaintimes she needs to pull back and just do the easy things.

‘‘Those things usually come when you are getting a bit moremature, round about 25-26 years of age. So what we are trying todo is fast-track her and get her to pull back at certain times. Theresults so far have been really encouraging. We have already seena huge improvement in her attacking game and a reduction in hererror rate.

‘‘We just have to keep building with it and once she gets a realfeel for it, the whole process will become automatic, it’s just amatter of time.’’

Sports’ second win on trotin Waikato premier rugby

TC280409CT02RYAN MEACHEAM, pictured playing in the latest home game againstUniversity at Albert Park, scored a brace of tries for Te Awamutu Sportsagainst Matamata Sports on Saturday.

Ecolab Te AwamutuSports gained a muchneeded four-try bonuspoint, 26-12, victory overMatamata Sports in Wai-kato premier rugby.

Peter Bain reportsthat Sports looked sharpfrom the opening minute.

Playing with a strongbreeze behind them, thevisitors kept Matamatapinned inside their 22.

Centre Glen Keveyopened the scoring win-ning the dive to loose ballafter a clearing kick byMatamata had beencharged down.

First-five WaylonTangohau added the con-version from out wide.

Sports kept Matamataunder pressure, movingtheir opponents from oneside to the other withclever switches in play.

Constant pressurepaid off when wing RyanMeacheam brokethrough the defence toscore the first of hisbrace of tries.

Tangohau added theextra points to giveSports a handy 14-0halftime lead.

Matamata would havebeen pleased to haveprevented the scorelinefrom blowing out further, having repelled many ofSports attacks. A fewindifferent refereeingcalls only seemed to frus-trate Sports.

Matamata then hadtheir turn with the windto keep Sports hard ondefence.

They used their bigforwards to keep the ballin the tight and crashover out wide.

The home team’ssecond try was a repeat ofthe first, again usingtheir big pack effectivelyand adding the conver-sion for a 14-12 scoreline.

The score stayed thesame until the final 10minutes when Sports, after a series of attacks, were awarded a penaltyclose to the Matamataline.

Quick thinking fromflanker Cohen Massonsaw him take a quick tap, catching the defence off-side, and crash over toscore, giving Sports a19-12 lead.

With ‘time up’ Mata-mata threw everythingthey had at Sports, mov-ing the ball from every-

    where.A penalty saw them

take a quick tap in a lastgasp effort, but a splitpass was gathered byMeacheam who racedaway from 50 metres outto score round behind theposts.

For Sports, flankerCohen Masson was againawarded player of theday.

Replacement lockLogan Pinny won a lot ofball off the oppositionfrom the front of thelineout, Tangohau

guided his team aroundthe field with some astutekicking, and Kevey had asolid game gettingthrough a lot of work ondefence.

Sports’ next game is athome to a muchimproved Melville side.
