Fiery ex-councillor taken to court Evidence in the court case be- tween Waipa District Council and former councillor James Parlane over a series of fire lighting inci- dents was heard in Te Awamutu District Court yesterday. Council is prosecuting Mr Parlane over four incidents of lighting and burning fires with- out permits in November and De- cember last year and one charge of wilfully obstructing a Council enforcement officer. Defence counsel, Peter Gor- ringe indicated the defence would attempt to establish factual er- rors, procedural steps not taken and an area where the bylaw appeared deficient and missing a distinct standard. Five prosecution witnesses were called to give evidence yes- terday and two by the defence (including Mr Parlane himself). Their evidence related to the series of fires at the property at 1070 Rewi Street which Mr Parlane has a financial interest in and where he burned building timber without a permit. First witness was Warren Good, who is also a director of Select Security which is an after hours contractor for Council. Mr Good’s residence is close to the Rewi Street property. He said when he awoke on Saturday, November 22 last year he smelt smoke coming into his house. He saw the smoke coming from 1070 Rewi Street and Mr Parlane was present. Mr Good was aware that there was a total fire ban on and that it was an offence to light a fire in an urban area without a permit. He was concerned about safety as well as the smoke nuisance. He said Mr Parlane told him it was none of his business. Mr Good said when an after hours contractor arrived, Mr Parlane admitted that he knew his fire was unlawful, but he did not agree with the bylaw. He re- fused to put out the fire and piled more wood on to it. It eventually went out. When another fire was lit by Mr Parlane the following Satur- day morning, Mr Good contacted Council health and environmen- tal safety officer Karl Tutty, who is also an enforcement officer. When Mr Tutty arrived Mr Parlane had left and the fire was unattended. He and Mr Good put it out with buckets of water and Mr Tutty left a note for Mr parlane, explaining the action taken and his authority to do so. When Mr Parlane lit another fire the following weekend, Mr Good again contacted Mr Tutty. When Mr Tutty tried to use the hose on the property to extin- guish the fire, Mr Parlane turned it off. Mr Tutty then tried to use a bucket of water from Mr Good’s place but Mr Parlane intervened and tipped the bucket upside down. Mr Tutty (second witness) showed photos of the fires and also of a mark he said he received when Mr Parlane thrust the bucket towards him. The case is continuing. More in Thursday’s edition. Impressing judges from Australia and New Zealand, Ian picked up the Perform- ing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand (PACANZ) national title, sash, trophy and $600 cash. In awarding the prize judges noted he had an harmonic voice and relaxed tap dancing style. They also felt he was a tal- ented dancer and had a great deal of poten- tial to develop his vocal skills further. Ian has been dancing for 10 years and has been a regular competitor at the Te Awamutu Competitions, as well as other events around the country. The title adds to his growing list of ac- complishments. Earlier this year he sat and passed six dance exams with excellence. Ian also won a major award at the Tauranga Performing Arts Competitions (collecting over $1200 in prizes and schol- arships) and will compete for scholarships in Wellington this weekend, along with his younger sister Leeza (13). Mother Tulouna says the pair are the only dancers to pick up nominations in three categories - jazz, tap and hip hop. Ian was thrilled to win the national title and sends a special thanks to Rosetown Li- ons for valuable sponsorship, helping him with tuition costs this year. His prizemoney collected at competitions has gone towards a car so that he can drive to his weekly lessons, classes he teaches in Te Awamutu and Otorohanga, and to other competitions. Foul language really puts me off!

Lately I heard a lot of that while I was talking to an employee of a local business (it is not only the employee either ...)

The experience has caused me to look elsewhere for better service. I would rather wait for service than having to hear foul language all the time.

Perhaps the people don’t notice it any more what they are saying, but in this case I’m going to look for other businesses that are able to give me a decent conversation without the foul language.

Come on Te Awamutu people, tidy up your act and keep the busi-ness ticking over locally.

Student hit by car after alighting from bus

by A 15-year-old student is lucky to be nurs-ing only moderate injuries after being hit by a car when he ran across the road from his bus.

The accident occurred on Owairaka Valley Road on Friday afternoon.

Due to the reactions of the driver, who man-aged to slow to about 40km/h on the 100km/h stretch of road, the student suffered only cuts, bruising, a broken ankle and a twisted pelvis.

Police remind motorists that the speed limit when passing a school bus is 20km/h. Traffi c sergeant David Hall says Police get many complaints about speeding past buses, but it is diffi cult to police, and best reinforced by way of education.

He also reminds bus students to wait un-til the bus has departed before crossing the road.

No wonder the Un-ion bosses are walking around with smiles on their faces; they have just pulled off the biggest coup of the decade.

The recent passing of the Employment Relations Amendment Act virtually reinstates compulsory unionism in this country.

That can only be bad news for the small and medium sized busi-nesses that the Cham-ber represents.

It’s been done through the back door, which makes it all the more sneaky.

When a new award has been negotiated by the Unions (and they are the only ones allowed to negotiate with employers), employees who have decided not to join the Union will have to pay them a ‘bargaining fee’.

If the employee refuses, their employer is for-bidden to pay them any negotiated extra wages. So, for ‘compulsory unionism’ read ‘bargaining fee’. How’s that for ‘good faith’!

New employers also now have to take on em-ployees from a business that has been acquired through a takeover or purchase.

If the employee doesn’t choose to work for the new owner of the business, the existing employer must reach a redundancy payment agreement with that employee.

This, as one would expect from the likes of Margaret Wilson, is a one sided piece of indus-trial legislation which puts unions back in the box seat.

Woe betide any worker who thinks compulsory unionism isn’t back.

Next best thing to complusory unionism

A Mahoe Street residence has won a regional award in the New Zealand Institute of Architects annual awards announced on Friday night.

The property at 366 Mahoe Street won the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Resene Local Award for

Architecture 2004 for Hamilton architect, An-tanas Procuta.

It was built for Jean Warburton and her son Jack by local builders, Tony Duncan and Roger Ramsey.

Local tradespeople completed virtually all of the work.

The judges remarked: “A restrictive triangular site has been taken as a source of inspiration to produce a quirky home that celebrates life with its angles, outdoor liv-ing materials, colour, light and form to create a great modern and very urban home in a

relatively conservative town.”

Mr Procuta says the nature of the site elic-ited a direct response, with the public areas against the street, the living areas to the sun, a hallway spine stretch-ing from a generous, light entranceway to the bedroom zone, with the bathroom and laundry areas located on the shaded aspect of the house.

“Using the challeng-ing quality of the trian-gular site, the proximity of the site to the town centre, and the desire to bring sun into the living areas, we were able to develop the architecture to provide an urban and modern response to the

street.”Mr Procuta says the

concrete block garage anchors the home to the site, with the roof lift-ing along the northern aspect to let the sun in. Little change was made to the original design and model fi rst presented, with the key improvement relocating the offi ce opposite the courtyard.

With the small site, the original concept de-sign set the house level with the ground, with doors out from each of the living areas and bedrooms to outdoor terraces.

Plans are being con-sidered to complete the landscaping of the property.

Ironman family man

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu pensioner Rolly

Walker came in for ‘one hell of a surprise’ on a trip of a liftime to see his son Andrew compete in the World Ironman Champion-ship in Kona, Hawaii.

The 66-year-old and his wife Jenny were among the 25,000 spectators lining both sides of the street near the fi nish of the marathon.

As Andrew approached, in 670th place overall out of 1800 competitors, Rolly handed him the New Zealand fl ag as planned.

But what he hadn’t counted on was his son hauling him over the spectator barrier and getting him to run the last 200 metres with him.

Pictures of the father and son crossing the fi nish line, hand in hand, were beamed live world-wide on the net.

While on the massage table shortly after fi nishing, Walker received three calls from friends back home in New Zealand say-ing they had just seen them on the net.

Walker says he had never seen his father run 50m before, let alone 200m.

“It gave us both a big buzz. “It was a one off chance with

dad. He’ll remember ‘racing’ in front of the thousands of specta-tors for the rest of his life.”

Walker (41) took took his time, up the 2km home straight, to soak up the atmosphere in his fi rst World Ironman.

“The locals just love Kiwis. They gave us lots of high fi ves.”

On the Thursday before the race, Walker went to the airport to pick up his sister-in-law Paula Bigley and her husband Paul.

To his surprise, his good friend Luke Armstrong of Te Awamutu had also fl own out to support him.

It was Walker’s seventh iron-man and Armstrong has been to six of them.

Their support - and that of his wife Debbie (carrying their sec-ond child) and daughter Petra back home - kept him going when the going got tough.

Debbie phoned him every day, his father helped him do his stretches each night and his mother made sure his meals were good and healthy

“Knowing I had their 100% support helped me relax so much more. The whole experi-ence was fantastic.”

Walker was more than happy to fi nish in the top third of the fi eld overall and in the top 100 of his 40-45 age group.

Each year over 50,000 triath-letes, from more than 50 coun-tries, attempt to qualify for the world’s most famous endurance event.

He was also pleased to be second New Zealander home in his age group, upstaging two of his fellow countrymen who had beaten him in the New Zealand Ironman at Taupo.

Walker covered the 3.9km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run in 11 hours 35 minutes.

A record 13% of this year’s competitors did not fi nish - the biggest percentage in the 26 years history of the event.

Others pulled out before race day because of sickness while acclimatising in Kona.

When Walker arrived in Ha-waii, two weeks early, there were no winds.

But come race day, the sea had white caps and he knew compet-itors were in for a tough time.

He was happy with his time of 1.05.00 for the 3.9km swim, having to contend with tide rips and swells.

The 180km bike leg sorted the ‘men out from the boys’ with a continual head wind for the 90km out to the turnaround point.

The riders were then buffetted about by a head wind for all but 20km of the homeward journey.

Walker found it scary, at times, with wind gusts causing riders to drop in speed from 40kph to 6kph very quickly.

He saw two riders thrown off their bikes

“The winds come off the sea, hit the lava fi elds and spring back at you, catching the riders unaware.”

Despite this, Walker says he felt good on the bike, reaching the bike/run transition station in 6.20.00.

He knew if he ‘cruised’ through the bike leg, he’d cope okay in his main displine - the marathon.

FIRST born for Christine and Brian Kenny is Emma Fiona. She weighed 3390g at birth at Matariki Maternity Unit. 307048AD

From page 6.After covering the

fi rst 5km in a ‘bit too fast’ 25 minutes, Walk-er says he recalculated his remaining splits in his head (“impressive for a concrete cutter”).

He hydrated well at all the main aid sta-tions, making sure he took suffi cient food and fl uid to keep him going in the extreme heat - ranging between 36 and 40 degrees.

There were lava fi elds either side of the road for the entire bike leg and just under half the run.

The Coca Cola, water, ice and wet sponges at each station were in great demand.

Walker now recom-mends anyone prepar-ing for the Hawaiian Ironman do their train-ing in New Zealand.

“I’m sure I lasted the distance because of the 35 weeks training I did in the New Zealand winter.

“The gale force winds, rain and hail I put up with back home stood me in good stead.”

He says competitors have two or three bar-riers to overcome on each leg of a triathlon in New Zealand.

“In Hawaii, there are up to 10 barriers each leg because of the extreme heat, equinox

winds and the tough-ness of the course.”

Walker now plans to have a season off to look after his body, family and business.”

Chances are he will

attempt to again qual-ify for the 2006 World Ironman. If successful, he would take his fam-ily over to Kona.

“Next time I want them with me.”

Came home to fi nd lake

GUTTED: Hazel Major surveys the damage to her near new Pirongia home. 30749AD

When Pirongia retiree Hazel Major arrived home after a La-bour Weekend trip to Rotorua she was greeted by a hallway full of water.

“I was dumbstruck. I didn’t know what had happened.

“Some clothes which had been left by the back door were soaked and I could not work out why.

“Then I looked down the hall-way and it was like I had a lake indoors.”

The hot water cylinder valve had burst, sending water throughout every room in the house except the kitchen/dining area.

When Mrs Major and daugh-ter Kaye Crombie found out later that Pirongia had lost wa-ter for about an hour on the Fri-day preceding Labour Weekend their suspicions were aroused.

Especially when a friend, Caroline Corr revealed that a

water pipe in her Pirongia home had also burst and a near neigh-bour said she had luckily been at home when sounds of stress from her cylinder’s valves made her turn the water off.

Mrs Major says she often turns the water off from her main when she heads away, but unfortunately did not do so on this occasion.

Some checks indicated that Council contractors had been working on the main Pirongia supply on the Friday and it ap-pears they replaced some parts incorrectly, sending a surge of pressure through lines as they had their supply restored.

Fortunately Mrs Major was insured, but her insurance com-pany were keen to follow up the cause with Council.

Virtually all the gib wall-boards in the house have to be replaced up to the fi rst joist, along with architraves and the

carpet. It will be some time before

Mrs Major has her normally immaculate house back ‘as good as new’.

Council communications man-ager, Wayne Green says Council is unable to comment on the specifi cs of the problem at this stage as staff are investigating. Only two home owners have so far contacted Council.

“Anyone affected should contact their home insurance company in the fi rst instance to lodge a claim for any water damage that may have oc-curred, or alternatively they can write directly to ‘The Planning and Policy Manager, Finance at Waipa District Council outlin-ing their claim and this will be assessed by Council’s insurers.

“Anyone needing further as-sistance or advice is encouraged to call Council’s utilities serv-ices manager, Tim Harty.”

Evening for womenMusician, book publisher

and committed Christian Rosie Boom is special guest at the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel Ladies Night on November 12.

The evening is being organised by the Weekly for Women group and will also feature some of the Boom family in concert, as well as cafe style food and coffee.

Mrs Boom lives at Te Pahu with her husband Chris and six children (whom she home schools).

She is also a trained nurse and spent time working on missions in Borneo.

She entertains, often singing with her husband, daughters or twin sister, and plays acoustic guitar.

Their music ranges from folk to ballad and blues. It has been described as heart moving and heart healing, with warm, inti-mate presentations.

The last fi ve years have seen the family produce over 60 new songs, take part in over 300 concerts and release fi ve profes-sional recordings.

Many may remember an ear-lier Te Awamutu Courier article about the Boom Family, when they produced and released a children’s book and CD which is a re-telling of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Happy Prince’.

The family is also very in-volved with World Vision, doing many concerts each year pro-moting Child Sponsorship.

Organisers of the evening promise an enjoyable, yet heart moving and motivating experi-ence.

The Ladies Night featuring Rosie Boom begins at 7pm on Friday November 12 in the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel.

Tickets ($15) are avail-able from the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel offi ce or Mansfi eld’s Fab-rics. Further enquiries to Sally Shierlaw (ph 870 2074).

The fi fth annual Waipa Networks Rose and Cultural Festival gets underway tomorrow night with an offi cial opening.

Events proper start on Thursday with ‘A Cosmic Concert’ by the Te Awamutu College Music Department (see page 3) and the Embroiderers Guild display in the Burchell Pavilion and concludes in two-and-a-half weeks with Rose Sunday.

The concept for the festival grew from a wish to celebrate Te Awamutu’s ‘time of the roses’ in a grander manner.

It was timed to fi nish on Rose Sunday, the popular event which has been running successfully for many years.

This year Rose Sunday and the Festival has been pushed a week later to allow more time for the fl owers to bloom, and hopefully for the weather to come right for many of the events.

Rose Sunday remains an iconic event, now held in conjunction with the popular McDonald’s Lifestyles Craft fair in Selwyn Park.

This year there will be the usual entertainment

from Te Awamutu Brass, joined by Rochdale Marching, tours of the gardens with Ray Hyams, the driving force behind the gardens, and the announcement of the Waipa Kidz Poetry Challenge.

Refreshments will be served from a marquee in the gardens, and there will be art displays in the Burchell

Pavilion and working artists in the garden, rose care demonstrations and fun for the kids at the craft fair.

This year also sees the return of the Top Pics Competition, which is judged soon.

Organisers will send invitations to the entrants to attend the awards night at Waipa Networks.

Festival news onlineTe Awamutu Online (wwweb.co.nz) has been one of the Waipa Networks Rose and Cultural Festivals best

supporters over the past fi ve years. The site puts up free programme information and previews and reviews events. Check the site at any time to

fi nd out about Festival events, and other Te Awamutu happenings.

Gold struck at Hokitika

SIX OF THE BEST: Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club representatives to win medals in the time trial at the national road championships, from left: Manu Robson, Shem Rodger, Peter Latham, Rushlee Buchanan, Sally Fraser, Tim Gudsell. Photo supplied

Te Awamutu Sports has con-solidated its standing as one of the top two cycling clubs in the country.

An outstanding haul of four gold, two silver and fi ve bronze medals gave Te Awamutu Sports second placing overall at the New Zealand road champi-onships in Hokitika.

Rushlee Buchanan set the ball rolling, winning the under-17 girls’ time trial by over 30 seconds on the fi rst day.

Sally Fraser emulated the feat, winning the women’s Vet 1 20km time trial.

Olympians Peter Latham and Tim Gudsell showed their class in the under-23 event.

Latham claimed his club’s third gold medal and Gudsell collected bronze.

Time trial bronze medals were also claimed by Shem

Rodger (under-17 boys) and Manu Robson (Vet 1 men).

Don Buchanan reports that the road races also produced some great racing.

Latham and Gudsell domi-nated the under-23 and open event, held as one race.

Latham won the under-23 gold and Gudsell silver. They placed third and fourth overall.

The seniors cracked on the pace from the outset.

A breakaway group was caught with 30km to go, then Heath Blachgrove and Justin Kerr managed to jump away with 20km to ride.

Then came the attack from Latham and Gudsell.

Over the last 5km they were able to keep away from the chasing bunch, with Latham winning the sprint to the line for the under-23 gold.

It was a mixture of fast, ag-gressive riding to a slow ‘trot’ in the under-17 girls’ road race.

With no rider being able to get away, it was down to a bunch sprint.

Ashleigh Stone took silver and Buchanan the bronze.

Fraser continued her good form, adding bronze to her gold.

Under-15 riders Mitchell Fal-coner and Emma Peterson were just off the pace in the fi nal sprint, fi nishing out of the med-als in their respective races.

Tim Bennett, James Morris and Shem Rodger featured in the under-17 boys’ race.

Riders attacked at various stages throughout the race, with the bunch always pulling them in.

It was down to a sprint fi nish, with Rodger the best of the lo-cals in fi fth place.

Baker bows out in semis

Te Awamutu tennis star Leanne Baker made the semi-fi nals of the doubles at the Tier 3 US$225,000 WTA event at Luxembourg.

Baker and Dutch partner Kim Kilsdonk were beaten by fourth seeds Jill Craybas (United States) and German Marlene We-ingarther 6-3, 6-3.

Baker collects half of US$3,000 but, more importantly, gains 66 personal world rank-ing points which could take her to around the 130 mark.

That would entitle her to enter the likes of the Australian Open.

Her present ranking is 153.Baker qualifi ed for Wimbledon this year and

made the USA Open main draw.

Conditions tough for bowlers

Twenty teams contested the handicap pairs in wintry conditions at Te Awamutu Bowling Club.

Janet Offi cer and Barbara Ryburn (handicap 8) beat Gay Bastion and Rhoda Bates (9) in the ladies’ fi nal.

The men’s fi nal was won by Gary Williams and Jim Baird (handicap 7) over Mick Barron and Ron Wilcox (8).

Rosetown cup glory rests with Grylls

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu ‘punters’ will

have added interest in today’s Melbourne Cup with the late call-up of Gary Grylls to ride Pacifi c Dancer.

Grylls, Waipa Racing Club’s personality of the year, will be hoping it is a case of third time lucky in the glamour event across the Tasman.

He was 20th on Ashburton galloper Bonsai Pipeline in 1997 and sixth on the Richard Otto-trained The Warrior in 1999.

The 41-year-old gained the ride on Pacifi c Dancer after booked rider Michael Rodd broke his wrist in a fall, rac-ing in Hong Kong on Saturday night.

Grylls can consider himself a trifl e lucky to be in a position to take the ride.

He was fi rst past the post on the Otto-trained Atapi at Ellerslie on Saturday, then relegated to second for inter-ference, copping a four day’s suspension.

Fortunately, acceptances had closed at the two meetings (Auckland today, Paeroa tomor-row) he was booked to ride.

The suspension takes place after these two meetings, allow-ing him to ride in the cup.

A relieved Grylls fl ew out for Melbourne on Sunday night with Pacifi c Dancer’s former trainer Richard Otto.

He was to be up before dawn yesterday for a trackwork gal-lop at Cranbourne.

Grylls could hardly believe his luck getting the opportunity

to ride one of the favourites in the cup.

One minute he’s landing a four day suspension, the next thing he’s riding the bookies 10 to one chance in the cup.

“You don’t get these chances every day,” says Grylls.

“I’m still in a state of shock.”Grylls has won all three ma-

jor (two mile) cup races in New

Zealand and would like nothing more than to add a Melbourne Cup to that impressive list.

He won the Auckland Cup on Kerry Lane in 1986, the New Zealand Cup on Soldier Blue in 2001 and the Wellington Cup on Oarsman last year.

Pacifi c Dancer drops 4kg in weight from his Geelong Cup win last start.

GARY GRYLLS on the Moira Murdock-trained Burglar. The popular Te Awamutu jockey will be hoping for a ‘smash and grab’ raid (win) on Pacific Dancer in today’s Melbourne Cup. Photo supplied

Win a double pass to the Finn Brothers

Te Awamutu Courier and Key Travel give readers the chance to win a double pass to the fi rst Auck-land concert from Te Awamutu’s favourite sons Tim and Neil Finn.

The boys have recently completed ‘Everyone is Here’, the second Finn Brothers’ album, although they were together for many years in Split Enz and briefl y in Neil’s band Crowded House.

The top selling album is backed by an internation-al tour which hits New Zealand next month with shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The tour is a chance for the Tim and Neil to revisit songs from their individual and collective catalogues.

Tim and Neil Finn have written over 500 songs, many of them among the country’s best known and best loved - songs like ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, ‘Weather With You’, ‘Six Months In A Leaky Boat’ and ‘I’ve Got You’ … and that’s just a start.

They’ve had more New Zealand number one sin-gles and albums than any other local acts. Split Enz alone are New Zealand’s most successful local chart

band with four No. 1 albums, while Neil Finn has the most New Zealand No. 1s of any local act with a total of nine albums and four singles reaching the top of the chart.

The Finn’s have also enjoyed success on an inter-national scale with both their solo careers and with Split Enz and Crowded House, together selling over fi ve million records.

‘Won’t Give In’ is the fi rst single from the new al-bum and on release was immediately the No. 1 most added song at radio.

The Finn Brothers will be joined on-stage by Tim Smith (Bass) and another set of brothers Paul Stacey (Guitar/Keyboards) and Jeremy Stacey (Drums).

KEY TRAVELThe Christchurch show and Auckland’s Saturday,

November 13 show have already sold out, and a sec-ond Auckland Sunday is also selling well.

Key Travel Te Awamutu has the simplest way to see this amazing pair in concert.

For just $90 they have great tickets for Saturday night and they will take care of the driving for you, so you can enjoy the night.

Phone John Pye on 871 6373 or 021951786 to secure the last few tickets.

To be in to win the double pass simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to ‘The Finn Double Pass Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Friday.
