Kihikihi Autobody Repairs owners Craig and MargO’Hanlon, along with staff members Jamie Westburyand Carlton James, opened their doors to host visiting
members of Marineland Street Rods recently. The Friday night get-together was on the eve of the Te
Awamutu Rod and Custom Club 30th Anniversary which thenapier rodders and families were attending. The 50 strong group in attendance included customers,
friends and former workmates who the O’Hanlons had metthrough their years in hot rodding bot here in Te Awamutuand Poverty Bay.Mr O’Hanlon had been a member and past president of
Gisborne’s Surf City Rod and Custom Club. While in gisborne he was also New Zealand Hot Rod
Association delegate and the napier Club fell within his zone.He and his wife have kept in touch with, and supported
marineland events. The evening was much appreciated by the Napier visitors
who had driven through on the day. They and other guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles
supplied by Kihikihi Autobody Repairs and Fairview Motors, the company which services the Spies Hecker paint systemthe O’Hanlons use.As well as being able to view some of the cool projects
being undertaken at the Kihikihi workshop, visitors weregiven an insight into the new technology involved in today’scar painting world with presentations by Fairview Motorspaint sales representative Dean Clarke and Mrs O’Hanlon. They demonstrated the latest paint matching tools and
products and the shop’s new spray booth— a state-of-the-artbooth equipped for waterborne paint systems, the next bigchange in the automotive refinish industry. The evening wound up with a discussion amongst car
builders about new colours and pearl and special effects thatwere available, giving everyone some new ideas for their nextprojects.Spot prizes of Mequires car care products supplied by the
Smits Group were given away before the visitors headed fortheir motels before the following days rod run and festivities.Kihikihi Autobody Repairs were grateful to the support of
Fairview Motors and Smits Group for helping make the eventpossible.

Cars not all equalin terms of safety
The latest results from the Australasian New CarAssessment Programme (ANCAP) show there are stillbig differences in safety levels offered by new cars. The results, released in New Zealand today by the
Automobile Association and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA)show the 2012 Holden Barina has scored the highest five-starsafety rating, alongside the Audi A6 and the BMW X3 SUV.Other ANCAP test results include four stars for the Citroen
Berlingo van and Nissan Micra, and disappointing three starresults for the Chery J1 and Geely MK.AA General Manager Motoring Services, Stella Stocks,
says for a smaller car such as the Barina to score the topsafety rating, it is testament that manufacturers can producevery safe small cars.‘‘It is no longer surprising to see manufacturers producing
vehicles that score 5-stars.’’The new Holden Barina maintained its structure well
during crash testing and comes with a full complement of airbags, anti-lock braking (ABS), electronic brake-force distri-bution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC) and seat beltreminders as standard features.‘‘Given this result, there is no excuse for any manufacturer
to be releasing new vehicles that score less than four stars, sothe Chery J1 and Geely MK results are unacceptable. I urgeNew Zealand motorists to ask what the safety rating is whenthey are making their next vehicle purchase and buy thesafest vehicle they can afford to buy,’’ says Ms Stocks.NZTA Chief Executive Geoff Dangerfield says the agency is
promoting the purchase of safer vehicles as part of the SaferJourneys strategy, aimed at significantly reducing deaths andserious injuries on New Zealand roads by 2020.‘‘Reducing road deaths and injuries is a shared
responsibility that requires safer roads and roadsides, safespeeds, better driver behaviour, and safer vehicles. Whenconsumers have good information on vehicle safety they willpurchase safer vehicles — that demand in turn drivesmanufacturers to build more safety features into their cars.We encourage people to look carefully at crash test resultsand buy the safest vehicle they can afford.’’ANCAP is supported by all New Zealand and
Australian motoring clubs, the New Zealand government, all Australian State governments and the FIA Foundation. The AA and NZTA are both members of ANCAP.
■ Detailed crash test results are available on thewebsites of both organisations—www.aa.co.nz orwww.nzta.govt.nz83

It has taken Colin Downie four yearsto find the classic car he wants —but the wait has been worth it.Already the 1970 Holden Premier
has become quite well known on TeAwamutu streets.Mr Downie is just the third owner of
the car, and to say the previous ownerwas a bit fanatical is an understate-ment.For a start he bought the car in 1979
and owned it for 32 years. He built a special shed at his
Ohakune property to store it, and hewould only let three businesses —all in Otorohanga — work on it.Mr Downie admits to being a
Holden fan, even though he gets abit of stick from his Ford loving sons-in-law.He has wanted another special
Holden after owning one of the firstever HSV’s — the 1988 4.9litre VLCommodore ‘Calais Director’.The Premier fits the bill perfectly. She’s a 308 V8 powered sedan
with Trimatic gearbox, electric windows, leather seats and power steering.Mr Downie believes the ‘70 was the
first model to have the Trimatic andpower steering. The car came in fantastic external
condition and runs beautifully.First job was fitting the new 16’’
wheels and some decent rubber, alongwith a new exhaust. It became apparent handling was an
issue, but that was easily resolved withall new suspension parts, includingarms, shocks, front springs, heavy duty
sway bar and bushes. Once she hassettled the rear leaves will be reset.Mr Downie says she was given a
wheel alignment with the new suspen-sion and now drives like a dream.Despite the outward beauty, under
the bonnet needs attention and will bedone soon.Mr Downie plans to take the motor
out, and have the wiring redone factory— as well as repainting the blackengine bay and the engine in factorycolours. A set of authentic headers willcomplete that work.
The interior is authentic, includ-ing factory radio, and just needs atidy. A new sound system will behidden in the glovebox.Family presented Mr Downie
with the personalised plate, and inreturn he enjoys cruising with thegrandkids in tow. He’s also a fan of motorcycling
— but says when its too wet or cold,or the grandkids want to come— itstime for the Holden.

Call of home motivation to complete radical rod
TC131011DB7A
RAT ROD builder Steve Kelly brought his brand new creation home to Te Awamutu last month.
TC131011DB7C/D
FIRST run for the ‘34 Rat Rod Coupe was TeAwamutu Rod and Custom Club’s 30th BirthdayRun.
Areturn by Steve Kellyto his hometown, andan extended stay to be
with his Mum Doreen, brother Chris and catch upwith other mates has cer-tainly made an impression ina short time. For a start he turned up
in a radical rat rod that hadbeen legally on the road forjust one day — and that wasthe drive down fromWhangarei. Then there was the fact
he had used the 30th birth-
day of the Te Awamutu Rodand Custom Club as motiva-tion to complete his project— but didn’t actually registerfor the limited numbersevent. After a bit of convincing,
the club allowed the Kellybrothers to take part in theSaturday run and immedi-ately his ‘34 Ford Coupestarted to attract attention.Going back in time, Mr
Kelly undertook hispanelbeating apprenticeshipupon leaving school and
started Supreme Panel andPaint in Rickit Road.He recalls attending
meetings where a hot rodclub was mooted, but neveractually joined as his interestlay in rallying and bikes.By his own admission, he
left Te Awamutu for hiswife’s hometown ofWhanga-rei with his tail between hislegs after his business hadfailed.Still the entrepreneur he
started afresh in his newhome, and did well.Mr Kelly started an
auctioneering and vehicleimport business. His auctions were gen-
eral and cars, and he admitshe had a couple of goodbreaks and was in businessat the right time to succeed. In fact he sold up and
retired in 1998.Lately he has been back
at work at a new business—motivation, businesscoaching and mentoring. The idea for the hot rod
came as a vision.Mr Kelly turned that
vision into drawings of hisideas, and then started look-ing for the raw materials. The coupe is a true
TradeMe creation — every-thing apart from the chassiscame through the auctionwebsite. He couldn’t find a 1934
Ford Coupe, so insteadbought a two door sedanbody that no-one else
wanted. It had come in theStates after sitting in apaddock for 50 years. The body had 980 bullet
holes in it, which Mr Kellywould have left if the originalplan was for a rat rod — butit wasn’t.The first drawing showed
a car painted in two tonematt and gloss black. The chassis had
belonged to his father and itwas rebuilt for the project.Mr Kelly got back into
panelbeating mode and builtthe car in his shed at hishome over nine months, working on it full time. The
lower body was repaired —then cut down into the shapeof a coupe.Mr Kelly had the idea of
making the guards and roofdetachable on a clip on clipoff basis. They said itcouldn’t be done— he did it.During the build the idea
of a rat rod took over, so allthe welds for the handshaped guards and roofremain.Mr Kelly bought an XJ6
Jaguar and created a com-bination of his own parts andJag parts to fit it to the Fordchassis and give him thestance he wanted — which
always included the huge20" ‘TradeMe’ wheels. He then bought the Lexus
V8, gearbox, computer anddash and made it all fittogether.Mr Kelly says the beauty
of the Lexus is the easypower.‘‘It’s a big block V8, with
‘hemi’ heads and a greatgearbox complete withpower steering,’’ he says.An aftermarket piggy-
back computer adds another100hp at the flick of a switch. The colour is bare metal
rubbed with a concoction ofoxide, rippo oil and turps.
Eight exhaust pipes allwork, and the interior isLexus and a Toyota seat, cutdown and covered in80-year-old seat leather.Mr Kelly says his one rod
can have 11 looks dependingon what panels are on or off.And while the rat rod
gets plenty of attention, don’t discount changes —including the possibility ofpaint — in the future.Already there’s anotherLexus V8 in the build — witha supercharger.■ Wantmore? Googlekellysnz and check thevideos.

BY DEAN TAYLOR
The last weekend of September was obviously popularwith various motoring groups, providing Te Awamutupetrolheads with a feast of activity.Apart from the aforementioned Te Awamutu Rod and
Custom Club’s 30th Birthday held over two days, TeAwamutu Motor Vehicle Enthusiast group had a Sundayrun. Also on the Sunday I saw a convoy of Mazda MX5’s and
a handful of Austins and Morris’ — and that was just whileI was getting fuel. Also at the service station was a stunning and original
1937 Alvis Speed 25 (parked behind a pair of hot rods).Travelling home I saw another 20 or so vintage cars on
Bridgeman Road — I had come across the North Shorebranch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand SpringTour.Club chairman and tour organiser Paul Collins was
driving the newest car from his collection on the two dayrun — a 1963 Humber 90.He had brought the 25 vehicles on the run to visit the
home and copper craft showroom of Reg and MargaretParkes.Mr Collins says the Spring Tour is an annual event for
their club — a two day affair which often brings inmembers of other branches. This year they had come south, stopping first to admire
a collection of a club member based at Waiuku. They motored south to Matangi to visit another
collection and stop for lunch before headingon a similar route as the hot rodders justhours earlier and also visiting the TirauMuseum.Next stop was Lichfield and the South
Waikato branch at Putaruru before overnighting atTokoroa.A Sunday morning tour of Tokoroa was followed by a
drive up Old Taupo Road to the Jim Barnett Reserve, upand across the Arapuni Dam to Alphra Lavenders for lunchand then through to the Parkes for afternoon tea.Last stop before heading home was Iron Park.Mr Collins says the Spring Tour is a great event, taking
the members off the beaten track to enjoy some terrificscenery.Next year the club is planning to go into the Thames
area.Stopping for a chat also gave me a chance to get close
to the Alvis and meet owners Brendon and Jo Neilson.Although it is a British car, it came to New Zealand via
America where it had been for almost 60 years.Previous owner, the late Bob Schindler (a noted US
rocket scientist and inventor), owned it for 38years.The Alvis has 114,000 original miles on the
