FLASHBACK: Police dog handler Blair Spalding puts his charge through it’s paces.

Te Awamutu people are helpingraise funds so that former TeAwamutu resident Blair Spalding(36) can access vital brain surgeryin Germany.

Family friend Alana Fisher sayslast year was supposed to be aspecial one for Mr Spalding, hisfiancee Carla and their two yearold daughter Indie.

‘‘Blair and Carla were to bemarried in Rarotonga in Septem-ber, but earlier in the year Blairwas diagnosed with a fairly raretype of brain tumour.

‘‘This was operated on in Marchand since then Blair has undergonesix courses of chemotherapy.

‘‘Both Blair and Carla hopedthat they could still get married,but in June they had to cancel thewedding due to effects of thetumour and the chemotherapy.’’

Scans have shown that thetumour has stabilised, but toimprove his prognosis, the onlyavailable option is further surgery.

Due to the location of thetumour and possible damage tocritical areas (such as speech andmemory) of the brain, Mr Spaldinghas been advised that his bestcourse of action is to undergo anoperation, which uses a brain-mapping machine during surgeryto significantly reduce risks.

Unfortunately, this type ofmachinery is not available in NewZealand.

‘‘So his family and friends arehelping to raise the money neededto go to the InternationalNeuroscience Institute in Hanover,Germany, for surgery within thenext few months.’’

Ms Fisher is staging a sausagesizzle and cake stall at Mitre 10Mega on Saturday from 9am.

On Sunday there will be a largegarage sale under the grandstandat Albert Park.

River water taste of necessityWaipa District Council has received a small

number of inquiries from residents about thetaste of the water in Te Awamutu recently andthe council’s water services team has been on thetaste trail.

With the current high demand for water in TeAwamutu, the council has had to turn on theriver pump to keep up with the demand.

Mixing water from different abstractionpoints can lead to a difference in taste and smellto what residents are used to.

The river pump is only used at times of highdemand and coincides with the council decisionto move to Water Alert Level 3.

Water services manager Lorraine Kendrickassures Te Awamutu residents the water is safe

to drink.‘‘The water is perfectly safe to drink and is

compliant with New Zealand drinking waterstandards. Testing has been completed andcouncil can confirm that there is no presence ofalgae and it is simply the introduction of theriver water that residents are noticing in theirsupply.’’

Better solution than fire bansCan I take the opportunity to

mention how the current firehazard is handled elsewhere?

I have lived many years inSouth Africa, and commanding afire ban there, in the barbecueseason, would be totally unen-forceable and simply be ignored.

Instead, fire risks areattenuated by being pro-active,by eg, harvesting the grass onroad verges before it gets tinder

dry, or by laying controlled firesduring periods of low winds tomake sure that paddocks areseparated by fire-proof spaces tosuppress uncontrolled spreadingof fires.

Road users habitually discardhalf-smoked, burning cigaretteson to the road verge in SouthAfrica, and road-side fires are aneveryday occurrence. Butbecause the verges are short-

cropped, there is little energy inthem, and it is possible to simplyignore those fires.

If you paid close attention tothe reports on both the recentAustralian and the New Zealandfires, they have either beenstarted by not paying adequateattention to the fire risk, or runout of control because fire breakswere absent.

The hot weather period we are

experiencing currently is goingto happen more often, globalwarming will ensure that.

Fire bans can only be a stop-gap measure.

Kiwis are proud of their can-do attitude; why is there nobodywho converts the fire risk into abusiness opportunity and collectsthe combustibles for cattle fod-der?

Changes on the way for district designWe read with interest

recently the controversyarising in Hamilton withbuilders and others atloggerheads with the localcouncil regarding newprescriptive rulespertaining to sectionshapes and house design.

Changes have beenrung in the recently noti-fied Hamilton proposedDistrict Plan rules, withcouncil promoting urbandesign principles to pro-mote crime prevention byimproving engagementwith the street.

Waipa District Councilresidents should be awarethat similar rule changesfor this district have nowclosed for public sub-mission.

Like Hamilton, themooted rule changes are

along the same lines, withthe use of planning rulesand design criteria to tryto create better livingspaces utilising the sun toadvantage and to promotepublic awareness of whatis happening around theneighbourhood streetfrontage.

Waipa’s proposedrules for new dwellingsdictate that no morethan 50 per cent of thefront facade of thebuilding can begaraging, which mustbe set back at least ametre from the front ofthe house. The frontfacade of the housefacing the street musthave 15-20 per centwindows, while yourfront fence or hedgecannot be more than

1.2m high, unless it hasvisual permeability.

New rules will alsobe imposed regardingthe siting of outdoorliving spaces to maxi-mise sun and shelter,with internal layout ofa dwelling in relation tothose outdoor livingareas also in the pre-scription.

Sections 2 and 15 ofthe proposed WaipaDistrict Plan set out thecriteria for new hous-ing and subdivisiondesign in the district.These can be viewedonline on council’swebsite.

CKL’s planningmanager David Lathamwill attend hearingsover the comingmonths on behalf of the

company and clients topresent submissions tocouncil.

Although the intentof the rules has merit,there are concernsregarding the practi-cality of some of theproposed changes.

After all submissionshave been through thehearing process, it willbe up to your elected

councillors (or anappointed com-missioner), to make thefinal decision on whichrules are adopted.

The future of our dis-trict and the way we liveover the next 10 yearswill be shaped by theirdecisions.

Waipa District Council’s Relayfor Life team members are againpreparing to put their best feetforward in support of the CancerSociety event in early March.

And they are hoping to raise awhopping $4000 to support thecause, starting on Thursday with a‘Dough Raiser’ at Domino’s Pizzain both Te Awamutu and Cam-bridge, where $1 will be donated toRelay for Life for every pizza soldbetween 11am and 11pm.

The Waipa Pirates core team of10 will take to the track at theMarch 9 event for the 22-hour relayat AgResearch’s Ruakura Centre inHamilton.

Other fundraising activitiesthey have planned includeValentine’s Day raffles, the raffle ofa patchwork quilt/throw (donatedby Gayle Dickie), a garage sale atTe Awamutu’s St John’s Anglican

Church on Saturday, February 9from 8am, and a firewood raffle anda sausage sizzle outside The Ware-house from 9am.

Team captain RebeccaHitchcock says the Relay for Lifeevent is very close to her heart.

‘‘The purpose of this remarkableevent is to help communities cel-ebrate and acknowledge cancersurvivors, remember loved oneslost to cancer and fight backagainst cancer.

‘‘Funds raised as part of theRelay for Life event help the CancerSociety to continue their extra-ordinary work; providing access tofree services, information and sup-port for people affected by cancer.

‘‘I find it a very special, movingevent that is for such a good cause.Everybody knows someone whohas been affected by cancer oneway or another.’’

Road safety reminder withstart of new school year

School is back and police andWaipa District Council arereminding everyone to considerthe kids as they make their way toschool for the start of the year.

There will be increased trafficand pedestrian volumes aroundschools. Many students may bestarting at new schools and may beeasily distracted by things such asnew surroundings and meeting upwith friends. Motorists arereminded to slow down and bevigilant.

Pedestrian crossings will beused more frequently at peaktimes as numbers of children walk-ing or using scooters increase.

Road safety co-ordinator MeganJolly says that younger childrenhave difficulty judging distancesand may step out on to a crossinggiving drivers little time to react.Even older children can becomedistracted and just step out. Motor-ists must slow down and be pre-pared to stop at all crossings.’’

Ms Jolly says that motorists

should consider reducing theirspeed to below the speed limitoutside all schools at peak times.

‘‘The faster you drive, theharder the impact. A person hit bya vehicle travelling at 30km/h hasa 95 per cent chance of surviving acrash, whereas the survival ratefor someone hit by a vehicle travel-ling at 50km/h is only 55 per cent.At 70km/h it is only about 5 percent.’’

Motorists may notice anincreasing number of schools withelectronic speed limit signage thatmandates a lower speed limit atpeak times outside the school.

Parents dropping off childrenhave an important part to play inkeeping their kids safe outsideschools. Parents should be goodrole models for their children bycrossing them at approvedcrossings when available.

Cars should be parked legally.Parking on a yellow line even for asecond will most likely occludeother motorists’ vision. Always

have children exit the car from theleft on to the footpath

Police will be patrolling aroundschools to ensure motorists keeptheir speeds down.

Sergeant Warren Shaw, of TeAwamutu Strategic Traffic Unit,says drivers must make sure theyare constantly vigilant aroundschools and police will have a lowtolerance for breaches of the speedlimits.

School buses will also be operat-ing and motorists are remindedthat the speed limit for passing astationary school bus is 20km/h.

This speed also covers vehiclestravelling in the opposite direc-tion.

Exceeding the limit can becostly. Drivers need to be awarethat, for example, passing a schoolbus at 70km/h the fine is $630 andtheir license is suspended for 28days. Anything in excess of that is28 days suspension followed by acourt appearance leading to aperiod of disqualification.

Departing deputy salutedWaipa District Council

chief executive Garry Dyethas announced the resigna-tion of group manager policyand strategy, Ross McNeil.

Mr McNeil has beenappointed chief executive ofRangitikei District Council.

Mr Dyet paid tribute to his17 years of service to thecommunity and acknowledgedthe huge contribution he hasprovided to the communityand council, and cited him asan exemplary deputy chiefexecutive and advocate forWaipa.

‘‘The council is indebted toRoss for focus and commit-ment and he has been anoutstanding advocate for thedistrict. The council, manage-

ment and staff congratulateRoss on his appointment andsincerely wish him a success-ful future in his new position.’’

Waipa mayor AlanLivingston also acknowledgedthe strategic support MrMcNeil provided to the coun-cil.

‘‘Council and the commun-ity congratulates Ross on hischief executive appointmentand wishes him very well inprogressing his career.

‘‘Waipa has been very for-tunate to have had a person ofRoss’s ability and his wideknowledge of local govern-ment matters, his strategicthinking and his excellentpeople skills that have ben-efited us will now be put to

very good use at Rangitikei.’’Mr McNeil joined the coun-

cil in 1996 as the environmen-tal safety manager responsiblefor overseeing animal control,environmental health andliquor licensing activities. Hesaid one of the mainattractions in coming to thecouncil was its reputation as aproactive, community-focusedorganisation.

Mr McNeil says workingwith the community on pro-jects and plans that supportthe development of the districtand improve the quality of lifefor its residents has been aparticularly rewarding part ofthe job.

‘‘Securing $7 million ingovernment funding for the

Kihikihi wastewater project isone of many highlights,’’ hesaid.

He added that local govern-ment is a challenging environ-ment to work in because of theoften conflicting demandsplaced on councils and theextensive compliancerequirements imposed by theGovernment.

‘‘Despite some of thesefrustrations one of the thingsthat stands out as a big posi-tive is being part of a staffteam with a collective commit-ment to make a difference forthe people of Waipa.’’

Mr McNeil will take up hisnew position as chief execu-tive for Rangitikei DistrictCouncil at the end of March.

THE Waikato River Authority is charged with improving thequality of the Waikato River water.

Two of the Crown repre-sentatives to the WaikatoRiver Authority have beenreappointed for a furtherthree years.

The terms of appointmentfor Waipa Mayor AlanLivingston and WaikatoRegional Council chairmanPeter Buckley were due forreview. The reappointmentswere made by the Crownfollowing consultation withcouncils within thecatchments of the Waikatoand Waipa Rivers.

The River Authority hasfive Crown appointed boardmembers and five WaikatoRiver Iwi appointed mem-bers. The Authority is co-chaired with Crown and Iwirepresentation.

Waikato River Authoritychief executive Bob Penter

says board representation isreviewed on a staggered basisto ensure greatest governancestability. A number of otherboard member positions arescheduled for review later inthe year.

The Waikato River Auth-ority Iwi members are:Tukoroirangi Morgan (co-chair), Hemi Biddle, RogerPikia, Stephanie O’Sullivanand John Kaati. The Crownrepresentatives are: HonJohn Luxton (co-chair), PeterBuckley, Alan Livingston,Sally Strang and JenniVernon.

The Authority is a co-governance body establishedbetween the Crown and Wai-kato River Iwi to restore theWaikato River.

The Authority covers acatchment area of 11,000

square kilometres for NewZealand’s longest river.

Over the next 27 years the

Authority will administer$250 million to support theachievement of its purpose.

Meeting his sporting hero was areal buzz for eight-year-old SamDenize.

The Pekerau Primary Schoolpupil was the lucky winner of a tripto Auckland to meet All Blackscaptain Richie McCaw.

His mother Bronwyn (on behalfof Sam) entered, along with around1000 other people, into the VersatileHomes and Buildings competitionvia Facebook.

To win the amazing opportunityshe was required to write why Samwould be a deserving winner.

‘‘Sam is a keen rugby player forPirongia and Richie McCaw is one

of his heroes,’’ she said.‘‘So I explained that Sam has a

number of food allergies he has tolive with and I thought it would benice for him to have somethingspecial to enjoy.’’

She was thrilled to hear theyhad won.

‘‘I was amazed really, out of somany people who had entered. Samwas pretty excited about the trip,but got a bit nervous as it gotcloser.’’

Sam, his parents Bronwyn andRoss and his five-year-old sisterEmma made the trip to the film setto watch the Versatile Homesbrand ambassador make his latestadvertisement.

They were also able to havelunch with the All Black — with aspecially prepared lunch providedfor Sam to cater for his allergies.

Sam also received signed Adidasrugby boots, while the whole fam-ily received signed caps, Adidasshirts, a Richie McCaw book andrugby balls.

McCaw then signed Sam’sChiefs jersey and Emma’s PirongiaRugby Club jersey.

‘‘Sam also appeared on the TV3sports news when Richie was inter-viewed about Zac Guildford.

‘‘But the real highlight for himwas to be able to throw a rugby ballaround with Richie, that was prettyspecial.’’

Despite rain yesterday Waipa District ison Water Alert Level 3.

Sweltering temperatures over recentweeks, combined with dry winds, requiredthe move.

Lorraine Kendrick Manager WaterServices says the district continues toexperience high water usage, so to ensurecontinued supply of drinking water there is atotal ban on domestic sprinklers.

There is also a restriction on outdoorwater use for commercial and non-residential properties.

“Alert Levels 1 and 2 have had a miminalimpact in reducing demand, so Level 3 was anecessary measure to manage this valuableresource.’’

Te Awamutu rider TaylorYarndley and her ponyPhoenician Nightgirl willshowcase their talents at theSydney Grand nationals in2014.

The 17-year-old qualified asa rider rep and the pony as aGalloway with a stand-out per-formance at the New ZealandNational Showing and RiderChampionships, held over fourdays at Hawke’s Bay Show-grounds.

The championshipsattracted record entries thisyear with 340 horses and poniescompeting.

In only her third show out inthe senior rider section,Yarndley on PhoenicianNightgirl took out NZ NationalChampion Adult Ridden Pony,and NZ National SupremeChampion Galloway (largepony, small park hack, 143cm-153cm).

It was sweet success for thelocal teenager. She ownsPhoenician Nightgirl, bred byVivian Staples in Hawke’s Bay.

Yarndley also rode VitoriaWeston’s Greenmoor Obsessionto NZ National Reserve Cham-pion Senior Rider 17 years andover.

Having turned 17, Yarndleyis no longer eligible to contestthe open show pony height138-148cm.

Amelia McLachlan did a fan-tastic job riding PhoenicianNightgirl for her in this event,taking out NZ NationalSupreme Champion.

The pony had further suc-cess — Reserve Champion LedShow Pony and winner of theIntermediate Led TurnoutChampionships, led by SarahParatene.

Paratene has now won theIntermediate Turn Out twoyears on the trot and JuniorTurn Out once, all on aPhoenician pony.

Hohepa trailed Reid by three shotsafter an opening round 75 at Pirongia,then hit his straps with a three-under-par 67 at Stewart Alexander and a finalround 72 at Te Awamutu.

Reid was most impressed by thenumbers shot by young Hohepa, whobroke through for his first seniormen’s strokeplay title at Te AwamutuGolf Club in August last year.

‘‘For one so young to be shootingthose scores three days running, onthree different courses, shows he is aplayer with a very bright future.’’

Reid was equally lavish in his praiseof the organisation of the tournament,thanking Mel Brown and his enthusi-astic team for a job well done.

He also paid tribute to thegreenkeepers at all three clubs, sayingthe courses were all in good nick andthe greens were ‘‘very good’’.

Te Awamutu’s Jill Morgan was in aclass of her own winning the women’sgross.

The Waikato representative shotrounds of 77 (Pirongia), 75 (StewartAlexander) and 72 (Te Awamutu) for a54-hole total of 224.

Her Te Awamutu club-mate SylviaGooch finished runner-up on 259 (85,85, 89), with Lochiel’s Kyla Butcherthird on 264 (90, 88, 86).

The intermediate men’s gross win-ner was Phil Lambert of Stewart Alex-ander with 233 (77, 76, 80), fromPirongia’s Craig McKellow 239 and TeAwamutu’s Craig Vincent 243.

A significant milestone for The Te Awamutu VolunteerFire Brigade is 100 years of continuous volunteer service.Twenty four hours, seven days a week, three hundred andsixty five days a year, for the past one hundred years, is anenormous equation to figure in terms of personnel hours.

Latest calculations indicate that 325 people haveserved as volunteers for the Brigade since its inception inJanuary 1913. This number provides a perspective of thetime and commitment from the men, women and familieswho are directly involved in providing your community witha modern, efficient and capable Fire Rescue Service.

The earliest recorded attendance roll for June 30, 1913shows a membership of twelve. As the town and districtgrew, so too did the Brigade.

By 1955 the Brigade membership had grown toeighteen and in that year responded to 33 callouts.

Skipping forward to 1973, Brigade numbers increasedto 25 with 65 callouts.

Fighting fires in TeAwamutu for a centuryA steady progression of callouts to the current 300-340 a year

has meant our membership has also had to increase to the present35 members.

The demands placed on the Brigade and its subsequent growthover 100 years have also changed the personnel dynamics, from asmall close-knit bunch of people to a larger diverse group. Longservice is fast disappearing because of changing workcommitments, inaddition to familyresponsibilitiesand other activi-ties that add pres-sure to the work-life balance.

Twenty-fiveyears of continu-ous volunteerservice is a realmilestone for any-one.

Te Awamutucan be proud ofthe fact that theTe Awamutu Bri-gade has thirty five members who have now achieved theirgold star (25yrs service) .

Modern day volunteer Fire Rescue Services arechallenging but rewarding and perhaps this is what attractspeople to our organisation knowing that they are continuingthe traditions of the Brigade as well as deriving personalsatisfaction for a job well done. Importantly, there is also thecomradeship that commonly develops within a group ofpeople thrust into difficult situations, plus the human need tobelong, to be recognised and to be accepted in a social andpublic environment.

As with many volunteer organisations there are opportun-ities for self development in addition to the rewards that gowith helping others in need in the community . For currentmembers and prospective members, the Brigade offers aunique sense of excitement and challenges involved with firefighting.

The social aspect of Brigade life also includes regular

opportunities to get together for casual and formalfunctions, and sporting activities. Fire Brigadesthroughout New Zealand are also supported by theUnited Fire Brigade Association who are responsiblefor supporting the nation-wide volunteer contingentthat in New Zealand accounts for up to 80 percent ofthe Fire Service.

Well operated and resourced Brigades need support fromtheir local communities.

Without this support the Brigade would not be able tocomplete projects such as upgrading rescue equipment andobtaining other specialised resources that enable us to do ourjob to the highest possible standard.

The generosity of our local service groups, businessesand community at large are crucial to the success of ourBrigade being able to fulfil its mandate — namely service tothe community.

2013 brings about 100 years of Brigade history and inFebruary this year many past and present members willgather for a weekend of acknowledgement, remembranceand celebration.

Throughout the year of our centennial the Brigade willacknowledge its many supporters and continue to build thestrong relationship with our community.

South Africa will be desperate to rightthe ledger when they meet New Zealand ina one-off polo international at Kihikihi onSaturday.

The rivalry between these two countriesgoes back many years with New Zealandwinning the BMW International Series 2-0on their last tour to South Africa in 2010.

But New Zealand beware.The South African team taking the field

at Nga Rakau ground is a lot stronger andmore experienced this time around.

It is one of the highest rated teams toleave their shores.

All four players have had internationalexperience, with three of them playing inthe Coronation Cup in the UK last July.

Former New Zealand internationalSimon Keyte says the fact that South Africawere only beaten by a late goal by Englandshows how naturally brilliant this youngSouth African outfit is.

‘‘They weren’t overly prepared for theirCoronation Cup clash with England andlost their captain through injury at the 11thhour but still ran one of the most profes-sional sides in the world right down to thewire.’’

New Zealand will field an equivalent 26goal team on Saturday, spearheaded by theworld class John Paul Clarkin.

Keyte says the two teams are matched toa tee.

‘‘It is shaping up to be one of the bestmatches for years, at least the equal of theArgentinian international at Kihikihi afew years ago.’’

The South Africans are a very profes-sional team in their own right.

The players will be accompanied by acoach and manager.

They need not worry about being onborrowed horses. Paul Kay and his fellowKihikihi Polo Club members will ensurethat the visitors are mounted on goodquality horses and given adequate practicetime to be firing on all cylinders come ‘test’day.

At No. 1 will be their youngest teammember Duncan Watson, son of highlyrespected South African international formany years, Russell Watson.

The five goaler is a strong, big hittingimpact player. He has played polo in theUSA, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Zambia,Nigeria and Malaysia.

The youngest of the du Plessis brothers,six goaler Jean, will be at No. 2.

He has worked for the Black Bears teamboth in Australia and the UK, a side thathas won 10 of 11 tournaments over the pastthree years.

Black Bears are the team Simon Keytehas been linked with since he left school asa 16-year-old.

Keyte says Jean du Plessis is a player tokeep an eye out for.

‘‘He’s lightning quick and fearless,arguably the most exciting player to watchon the South African team.’’

Nachi du Plessis will captain the visi-tors. He’s the highest rated player in SouthAfrica, playing off eight.

Keyte says the skipper is extremelyaccurate and able to read the game better

than most.He, too, has been contracted by Black

Bears to join JP Clarkin for high goalcompetition in the UK, including theQueen’s Cup and Gold Cup from May toJuly this year.

At No. 4 will be seven goaler Tom deBruin, described by Keyte as having the‘build of a prop’.

‘‘Tom’s a huge hitter of the ball, verydifficult to ride off, and a very mentallytough player,’’ says Keyte.

New Zealand have fashioned an envi-able record at Kihikihi, always rising to theoccasion against some of the best teams inthe world.

Under the astute captaincy of JPClarkin, spectators are again assured onehell of a test match.

Clarkin has played polo all over theworld and won numerous titles, includingthe St Moritz Polo World Cup, the NewZealand Open, the Gold Cup and the BritishOpen — some on more than one occasion.Most recently, he made the final of theprestigious Queen’s Cup.

The eight goaler will play at No. 3 in thetest.

At No. 1 will be five goaler ThomasHunt, a cousin of Keyte and Clarkin.

Sam Hopkinson will be at No. 2 andThommy Wilson at No. 4. They are six andseven goalers respectively.

The 3pm test will be preceded by acurtainraiser at 1pm and Polo for theFuture at 2.15pm.
