Jason Karauti told the Courier he joined the brigade (in 1991 at the age of 20) because he wanted to give something back to the community. He had grown up with a fire- fighting background - his stepfa- ther was a volunteer in Ashurst near Palmerston North. “Whenever he responded to the siren we would race down to the end of the street to see where the engine was heading.” The family moved here in ‘84. By Grant Johnston The Auckland property market weakened off large gains last month, but in Te Awamutu area there appears to be plenty of steam left in the market. Ken McGrath, co-owner of Har- courts’ Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, and Te Awamutu offices, forecast that rural towns were going to hold up better under the predicted level- ling off of the market than larger urban centres. “Throughout 2005 and into this year we have seen a lot of inter- est from people moving away from cities and from people from overseas who have done their homework. “In places like Te Awamutu they can buy well and have a great lifestyle.” Mr McGrath says along with keen locals, buyers from further a field were driving around the area they saw as “a quaint place to live”, impressed with what they saw. “Prices are still between $200,000 to $300,000 for a good family home.” Sales had occurred right up to Christmas day and those agents who worked over the holiday pe- riod had been kept busy. Diane Tyer, office manager for L.J. Hooker in Te Awamutu, says buyers are still actively seeking properties. “But they are not quite as ready to jump in and buy for asking price, like they were three months ago. “They are a bit more cautious and keener to negotiate.” Mrs Tyer says interest rate ris- es and predictions by economists and the media of a housing price correction had taken some of the steam out of the market. There are also more proper- ties available, taking some of the panic factor away for buyers. “But properties that are listed carefully, realistically priced and well presented are still selling readily.” Mr McGrath says while prop- erties are achieving good selling prices, double digit price hikes appeared increasingly less likely. “I certainly don’t see prices go- ing down, but there is probably going to be a levelling off.” Mr McGrath, who is also an auctioneer, says while the price rises have slowed to a more sus- tainable level, the buying and selling confidence was still very strong. Two very successful auctions in the same week last month il- lustrated this, he says. A 20 hectare block in Parawera with a large modern homestead and second house in park-like grounds after “very competitive bidding” sold under the hammer for around $1,450,000. A well presented four bedroom Otorohanga home on 6.6 hectares of cropping land with three road frontages also suitable for a stud or hobby farm, or subdivision sold under the hammer for $635,000. Mr McGrath praised Otoro- hanga District Council’s ini- tiative in actively driving new residential subdivisions to give developers the confidence to in- vest in meeting buyer demand. Congratulations to the organisers of Saturday’s fundraising concert for Lanie Elison. I know better than most in Te Awamutu how diffi cult it can be to get locals to attend musical events.

A crowd of 500-600 is a good effort and I hope the money raised helps bring about the success result Ms Lanie and her supporters hope for.

I see also that many people were im-pressed by a couple of the local bands which performed in Saturday.

We have, in fact, been host to many good Kiwi and local performances over the years.

It is true the Split Enz concert of 1984

would be Te Awamutu’s biggest pop music event. Prior to that the Sound Out ‘72 show was a major event, featur-ing many ‘Happen In’ pop stars of the time and headliners The Peddlers.

In 1993 Tracey Magan brought Tim Finn to Te Awamutu and last year Ec-cles Entertainment brought Dave Dob-byn to the Kihikihi Town Hall.

Also from 1993 Backstage Pass has been promoting top Kiwi bands in Te Awamutu, as well as giving many lo-cal acts the chance to play in a concert setting.

Big names to play here include The Muttonbirds, Midge Marsden and the

Legendary Mudsharks, Tom Sharplin and the Cadillacs, Fur Patrol, Good-shirt, betchadupa, Beaver, Dave McCa-rtney, John Hore, Barry Saunders, Paul Ubana Jones and The Warratahs.

Midge Marsden and Bullfrog Rata also starred in the fi rst Free Concert in the Park.

Acts featuring homegrown talent include Whisperscream, Lizard, The Big Muffi n Serious Band, Torch Songs, Cameron Olsen and Kelly Tauroa, Head First and Heavy Lounge Suite.

With reference to the ad in your paper last Tuesday ‘Barking Dogs’.

I suggest the person who placed the ad amuse himself by educat-ing the public on the sins of ob-taining puppies and abandoning them when they mature and need de-sexing.

Rather than the dogs being shot, I suggest their owners should be.

Dogs have far more sense than humans, are true friends, utterly loyal and ask for nothing more than food, shelter and love - not a lot to ask is it.

There are not a lot of people out there who can comprehend the basic rights of animals.

We were taught at home and at school. There were regular SPCA speeches at our school and we looked forward to them.

So instead of moaning, do some-thing useful and defend the dogs. Give me a dog any day.

Mighty redwood no moreBack a few months there was a huge

protest about some trees having to be removed to widen the street by the Medi-cal Centre.

Last week an 80-year-old redwood tree was felled and mulched for no apparent reason.

This beautiful specimen stood proudly next to the Morgan monument beside the Information Centre and new toilet block being built in Arawata Street.

Several people stared in amazement as the professional tree fellers made short work of this tree.

They could not understand why this

tree was being removed as it was in per-fect health and had another 25 years of life at least.

I can not believe we are in the same district as Cambridge. They treasure their trees and would not cut a tree down without very good reason. I would appreciate an answer from the Council through your paper as to why this tree was removed and also whether there will be any trees planted as replacement.

Several trees have been felled in Gorst Avenue and to date I have not seen any replanting taking place.

Ah - sex for money! The wonder of its honesty, its simplicity, its morality and its courage.

A trading relationship exposed: one’s there for the sex - the other for money. An outcome of light and truth: no miss-understanding and no lies.

I would be very happy A. J. Evans, to live next door to a brothel. Such an hon-est expression of primary needs - sex and

money, would be a welcome relief to all the dishonest ways that these two bedfel-lows are generally traded in our society.

I would especially like to meet my neighbours - the prostitutes - male and female - whose courage to live their truth means they must live it out confronted by a society founded on the judgement of others.

Waipa District pa-raded an unparalleled number of its sporting stars on Sunday as the Queen’s Baton Relay made its way through the district on the pe-nultimate leg of its New Zealand tour.

Olympic, Common-wealth, world and New Zealand champions in equestrian, cycling, rowing, rugby, netball and a host of other sports either took part in or were present dur-ing the event on Sunday afternoon.

It was also a chance for the district to show off some of its world class sporting venues, a fact not lost on Com-monwealth Games offi cials who said the would back Waipa’s bid to host the the World Rowing Championships at Karapiro.

The baton is travel-ling all 71 Common-wealth countries in the lead up to the Mel-bourne Commonwealth games in March.

By Cathy AsplinWhen Faye Coxhead

came to the Kaipaki District almost 40 years ago with her husband and young family she found life on the farm quite lonely.

So she joined the Kaipaki Church Ladies Guild to enjoy some female company and quickly became involved in the community.

The Guild had been going since World War I and is still going today - with Mrs Coxhead still a member.

She is also a trustee of the cute little church on the corner of Kaipaki

and Mellow Roads. While the church isn’t

used as often as it was when she fi rst arrived, she still believes it is a vital part of the rural community and well worth preserving.

“Last year the Kaipa-ki community donated funds towards replacing the roof and repainting it, so it looks great from the outside.

“But there is still much to be done inside and we didn’t want to go to the same people for further donations.”

Mrs Coxhead says the next project is revar-nishing and painting of the interior.

“So the trustees have decided to have a fundraiser in the Kai-paki Hall to help pay for this project.”

The trustees are delighted to have 2004 Tui Music Award fi nal-ist Rob Innes as guest artist for the event.

The fundraising con-cert kicks off at 1.30pm on Sunday, February 12.

Pre-paid tickets (adults $20, which in-cludes afternoon tea) are available from Mrs Coxhead (ph 07 823 6802) or one of the other trustees. Copies of his CD will also be avail-able on the day.

CHURCH HISTORY Mrs Coxhead says

there has been a church in the Kaipaki area since 1871 when the fi rst Methodist church was built at Pukerimu.

“At the turn of the century it was moved to Kaipaki - through Walkers Gully with the use of a farmer’s trac-tion engine - and placed on the present site on the corner of Kaipaki and Mellow roads.

People walked road or drove considerable distances to services.

But by 1926 the church was in a bad state, with much of the wood full of borer and timber rotting in places.

So the decision was made to demolish the church and construct the new one that is on the site today.

It was initially admin-istered by six trustees from the Methodist, Presbyterian and Angli-can churches, with each denomination taking turns to have services.

Today the services are held in the church at 11am on the fourth Sunday of each month with ministers or lay preachers from Te Awamutu-Paterangi Parish, St Andrews Anglican Parish, Union Parish and Cambridge churches.

The church seats around 70 and is often used for weddings, bap-tisms and funerals.

HAT-TRUCK: Police and firefighting personnel at the scene of Thursday morning’s crash. 024066AD

A Couplands Transport truck parked on the side of State Highway 39 in Ngahinapouri last Thursday became an innocent victim in a bewil-dering three-truck crash.

The parked truck was struck from behind by a smaller northbound truck, which in turn was struck by a northbound Rocwool Insulation truck, unable to stop in time.

The 10.50am accident happened on a morning on which there had been frequent showers and the road was greasy, but the accident was still dif-fi cult for those arriving at the scene to ‘fathom’.

Three children who were passengers in the cab of the centre truck, were lucky to escape serious injury after the passenger side of the cab was ex-tensively damaged (see photo at right).

The children, two girls and a boy aged between fi ve and eight, received minor injuries and were taken to Waikato Hospital by St John Ambu-lance.

Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade and Pirongia Fire Force attended the accident.

The minor nature of the children’s injuries was a relief to all involved, particularly considering the potential for much more serious injuries that the damage to the cab suggested.

Police investigating the crash believed it was a case of drivers not adjusting to the wet condi-tions.

The Couplands Transport truck had to return its load of horsefeed bound for Hamilton to the company’s Te Awamutu depot for loading onto another truck for delivery.

Then, like the other two trucks involved in the crash, it was headed for the panelbeaters.

Plunket increased contacts with high need fam-ilies in Waikato by 38% over the last two years, according to latest results.

“Contact is crucial for supporting happy, healthy families. Our teams can be very proud of the results they’ve achieved,” says Plunket’s general manager operations, Jenny Prince.

“A strategic focus on increasing access to care and support is producing some fantastic health outcomes,” she says.

The results also show exclusive breastfeeding

rates in Waikato are 10% higher than national averages for six-week-olds (61%).

“These outcomes are brilliant because breast-feeding is very benefi cial for health, nutrition, development, immunity, and psychology.”

Elinor Rawlings, Plunket operations manager for Waikato says: “Clinics and home visits are arranged to meet the community need. Collabo-ration with clients and working with local volun-teers makes the difference.”

READERS’ SUMMER SNAPSBabies to benefi t from Variety appeal

Neo-natal units around the country will soon welcome a new addition in the form of much needed hearing screening equipment for premature babies.

Variety - The Children’s Charity has an-nounced that funds from its 2006 annual appeal (February 6-19) will be used to pur-chase Auditory Brainstem Response Ma-chines for selected New Zealand neo-natal units (including Hamilton).

And for the fi fth year in a row, national supermarket chain Countdown is naming rights sponsor of the appeal, providing New Zealanders with the opportunity to support the cause at its 57 stores.

Variety chief executive Lorraine Taylor says currently only three of the country’s neonatal units have screening equipment, with two of the machines using outdated technology.

“More than 1600 premature babies are admitted to our neo-natal units every year and they have a much higher incidence of hearing loss than full term infants.

“About 23 per cent of children with hear-ing loss are from premature births – so this equipment is extremely important in these units to identify those infants with permanent congenital hearing loss. Results are much more favourable for children who receive hearing aids in their fi rst six months of life.

“The machines cost $25,000 each, so our target is to raise $175,000 to purchase the seven machines. We couldn’t do this with-out the generous support of Countdown and its shoppers”

Children’s television personality Suzy Cato is another proud supporter of the 2006 appeal, as offi cial ambassador for the campaign. She encourages all Kiwis to ‘do their bit’ to help Variety to achieve the ma-jor goal.

Plunket serving areaFrom page 6.

Clare Green, Plunket Volunteer Services leader for the area, explained: “We have 15 branch committees around the Waikato. These committees organise a multitude of activities every year from fundraising and PR events to educational workshops and support groups.

“Parent support groups are avail-able in many communities through out the Waikato, such as coffee groups, playgroups, walking groups, and we have recently begun a parenting education programme called PEPE, which is proving to be very popular.

“We also run 13 car seat rental schemes through out the Waikato and offer a Toy Library Service in Hamilton, which is a great way for children to have fun with lots of different toys with out the expense for parents.”

Sheryll Davies, Plunket New Zealand councillor for Waikato, added: “Our volun-teers managed to raise over $40,000 in the Annual Appeal this year.

“What motivates volunteers is a belief that they can and do make a difference for the families in their communities. We rely heavily on the public and businesses for fundraising, but our most valuable resource is people who bring passion, a variety of skills and knowledge of the community.”

Plunket runs clinics in 27 sites throughout the Waikato District Health Board area.

Arts Waikato has $40,000 to award in annual scholarships for tertiary study.

This will take the total invested in crea-tive talent throughout the region since 2002 to $200,000.

The regional commu-nity arts trust is call-ing for nominations for its 2006 scholarships, which can be for study in any area of the arts including arts adminis-tration.

Increased interest in the arts in the region has led to growth in educational opportuni-ties in the creative sec-tor, according to Arts Waikato chief executive Hilary Falconer.

“There are many tal-ented people who give a lot to their community and our scholarships encourage them to take up opportunities to de-velop their own creativ-ity, which has a positive spin-off for the region’s arts sector,” she says.

Arts Waikato schol-arships are available to anyone resident or educated in the greater Waikato who is involved in community activities which contribute to the arts in their region.

Applicants are nomi-nated for a scholarship through a community group or organisation.

Scholarship forms will be available from Arts Waikato, District Coun-cils or local secondary

schools and tertiary ed-ucation providers from the beginning of Febru-ary, with applications closing on March 31.

Scholarships are awarded at the end of May.

For more informa-tion on eligibility and criteria, or for an ap-plication form, contact Arts Waikato, freephone 0508ARTSWAIKATO or email [email protected]

New manager for local Whitcoulls storeIN BUSINESS CIRCLES

New Whitcoulls manager Michelle Fenton-Lee origi-nally comes from a small rural town in the South Island, so is pleased to be part of a similar community in the North Island.

“It’s a nice friendly town, that’s very central. We’re enjoy-ing it here.”

Mrs Fenton-Lee came to Te Awamutu from Nelson where she was assistant manager in the Whitcoulls store.

She started her new role in Te Awamutu just prior to Christ-mas, while her husband is a chef at The Redoubt.

Mrs Fenton-Lee says Whit-coulls is well established, re-spected brand in New Zealand with seven Waikato stores and around 80 stores nationwide. Locally Whitcoulls opened in the brand new premises in Au-gust 2003.

“Most people recognise Whit-coulls as a great bookshop with the latest titles, favourite reads,

great specials and access to some interesting less-known titles.

“But people possibly don’t realise the wide range of other items we have in stock.

“Whitcoulls has a great selec-tion of DVD’s instore, as well as stationary (back-to-school specials begin this week), photo albums, gift items, art supplies, computer accessories, puzzles, games, cards and magazines.

“We have great suppliers so if there’s something specifi c you’re after in terms of book or DVD ti-tles we’re happy to source it.”

For those who aren’t sure of what to buy for a birthday or those sending gifts to Australia, Whitcoulls have vouchers that can be redeemed in any of the New Zealand Whitcoulls stores or the ‘sister’ stores of Angus and Robertson in Australia.

“Both Whitcoulls and Angus and Robertson brands are well known in their respective mar-

kets and have histories dating back over 100 years.”

In New Zealand Whitcoulls is proud to be a major sponsor of Books in Homes. Every store throughout the country spon-sors a school under the ‘Books in Homes’ scheme.

The aim of the Alan Duff Charitable Foundation pro-gramme is to create a more literate and employable society by ‘breaking the cycle of book-lessness’ in low socio-economic schools.

Whitcoulls Te Awamutu store is open from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am - 4pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday (although Mrs Fenton-Lee is often still helping cus-tomers after closing time and doesn’t always shut the doors ‘on the dot’).

Whitcoulls also has a help-ful website where people can browse for book titles etc (www.whitcoulls.co.nz)

Bowls’ golden girls pull off stunning win

By Colin ThorsenThree bowlers with a com-

bined age of just over 210 years caused a boilover winning the women’s triples championship at Te Awamutu Bowling.

Margaret Kelman (s), Jean Wilcox and Val Sargent upset the pre-tournament favourites and defending champions Janet Offi cer, Jan Yarndley and Mar-garet Littlewood 16-8 in the fi nal.

It was a joyous occasion for the victors, all three claiming their fi rst women’s title at the club.

“We started as the underdogs and fi nished as the wonderdogs,” quipped skip Kelman, who has a great repertoire of one-liners.

The team is a real mixture - made up of a Scot, a Pom and and Kiwi.

Kelman joked that they were representing the ‘tri-nations’.

The Scot arrived in New Zea-land from Edinburgh in 1967 - “but I still haven’t got a certifi -cate to change my accent.”

She started playing bowls at Pirongia before moving to Te Awamutu 2½ years ago.

“I was too young, too busy to play bowls in Scotland,” she says.

Kelman won the Te Awamutu mixed pairs, partnered by Gary Williams, last year.

Ironically, Val Sargent and Kelman were born on the same day, in the same year, 1935.

Sargent took up bowls when living in Hamilton. She won the junior singles championship two years in a row at the Glenview club before joining Te Awamutu eight years ago.

Jean Wilcox is an ‘Uptown

Girl’ from Upton by Chester. She didn’t take up bowls until

moving to New Zealand in 1970 and joining Waihi club.

She was runner-up in the Thames Valley mixed junior fours championship of 1996-97.

Three teams, each with one life, remained in contention for

the triples championship enter-ing the fi fth round.

Last year’s winners Offi cer, Yarndley and Littlewood drew the bye into the fi nal, while Kel-man, Wilcox and Sargent beat Betty Bourne, Ruth Holden and Barbara Ryburn in the semi-fi nal.

TOP TEAM: Te Awamutu women’s triples champions, from left, Margaret Kelman, Val Sargent, Jean Wilcox. 0240613AD

They started as the underdogs and ended up wonderdogs

Gary Snellgrove skipped his team to outright victory in the Waikato Toyota optional fours ham and turkey tournament at Te Awamutu Bowling Club.

Snellgrove, Grace Snellgrove, Harry Hopping and Ted Sir-combe were the only team out of the 27 entries to emerge with a maximum four wins.

Tony Pivac (Te Kuiti) and John

Porter (Otorohanga) fi lled the minor placings.

The club’s junior pairs champi-onship was won by Ron Wilcox (s) and Jim Baird. They beat Doug Barrass (s) and Miles Purser 16-12 in the fi nal.

Both Te Awamutu men’s and women’s teams fi nished runners-up in the Bowls Waikato sevens interclub competition.

New Zealand meets England in a clash of the titans in the in-ternational polo day at Kihikihi on Saturday, February 11.

It is an important fi xture for the home side, which will be looking to gain not only the win, but a psychological advantage before they line up for the Coro-nation Cup in the UK.

The last time NZ were invited to play in the Coronation Cup, which they won, was in 1991.

England were beaten by Aus-tralia on home turf last year, while New Zealand beat Aus-tralia at Kihikihi.

A win this time around over the ‘Poms’ would set the Kiwis up nicely for the Cup event in the UK.

Cody Forsyth is the only sur-vivor of the New Zealand team of 1991.

Although the NZ team for February 11 has not been con-fi rmed, it is likely that he will be in the team as one of the country’s four seven-goal play-ers.

Forsyth is still rated as one of the best ‘big game’ players in the world. Even as he approach-es the end of his international career, he still commands huge respect.

He was a NZ selector last season and coached the winning home side against Australia.

During a 20-year career playing professional polo in England, he represented New Zealand many times, including three Coronation Cup victories.

He also played for England in 2000 when they beat the USA for the fi rst time since 1937 - England taking advantage of the rule that they could call on a Commonwealth player to help out.

Forsyth also plays ice polo in Switzerland.

Also likely to line up for New Zealand is John Paul Clarkin (27), Simon Keyte and Tommy Wilson.

Now considered New Zea-land’s leading professional player, JP played his fi rst tour-nament at age 13, although he had been playing at home well before then.

His late father, Paul, was one of the country’s leading players and coaches internationally for over 30 years.

JP spends most of his year overseas, playing with royalty in England. He played in the 2003 elephant polo world cham-pionships in Nepal.

At home, he has featured in the winning Open tournament team three times, and was a member of the winning 2000 Savile Cup team.

He has played other major high goal tournaments and been in winning teams in me-dium goal events in the UK and

South Africa. With cousin Simon Keyte and

top Australian, Glen Gilmore, JP had a successful last season in England, contesting several high goal fi nals.

JP’s aim is to be New Zea-land’s fi rst 10-goal player and he’d love to play for NZ at the Olympics, if New Zealand quali-fi es for the 2012 games.

He has represented New Zea-land four times in the past, as well as twice in the NZ Colts.

Simon Keyte (31) plays off seven goals and is a regular New Zealand team member. He plays polo worldwide, but now manages a major club in Australia, where he lives with Aimie and their three-month old son Zac.

Tommy Wilson (34) is the other seven-goal NZ repre-sentative, with two wins in the NZ Open and four Savile Cup triumphs to his credit.

He started playing polo at 14 years of age and has worn the silver fern since 1993. He has played in South Africa, Eng-land, Australia, France, Kenya and Switzerland.

Polo runs in the Wilson family. His father Tom was a top player and Tommy and his brothers are fi fth generation polo players.

ENGLAND STRONGThe English are fi elding a for-

midable team.Captain Luke Tomlinson and

his brother Mark are fresh from playing in the Argentinian Open – the Wimbledon of polo – with increased goal ratings.

They will play off seven for the test.

James Beim has also in-creased his handicap to seven goals playing in Australia.

Their fourth team member has not been confi rmed due to a last-minute pull-out by Henry

Brett.The English team will be

playing a Northern Provincial team and a Southern Provin-cial team (lower North Island) over the weekend of the Keyte Watson Tournament (Waitangi weekend, February 4-5).

One game will be on Saturday and one on Sunday as the fea-ture games of the weekend.

This will be a great chance to see the English in action before the test.

The New Zealand selectors will be watching them closely, particularly in light of the fact that three of the English team have improved their goal rating this season.

The English team will also be using the tournament as a chance to try out ponies for the following weekend’s test.

ND belted for sixYoung Liam Steffert

(pictured left) could well be a Chris Cairns or Brendon McCullum of the future.

The six-year-old kept the crowd on the em-bankment entertained with his lusty swinging of the willow.

It was in stark con-trast to the below par performance of the Northern Districts batsmen out in the middle at Westpac Trust Park.

They laboured to 112 batting fi rst against Auckland at Hamil-ton’s fi rst domestic Twenty20 game on Friday night.

Auckland cruised to a nine wicket victory, overhauling ND’s total in the 16th over for an easy win.

A crowd in excess of 2000 turned up to watch the abbreviated game that has proved so popular in England and South Africa.

ND chief executive David Cooper said the crowd showed their was an appetite for Twenty20 cricket.

“It was a good crowd, we got a good turn out,” he said.

“It was just a pity our guys didn’t turn in the performance they wanted.”

Cooper said it would be good to have a full round of Twenty20 next season to see if the support from the public continued.

Auckland will now play Canterbury in the fi nal of the inaugural Twenty20 competition.

LIAM STEFFERT (6) sends one out of Westpac Trust Park as wicket-keeper Nicholas Farrell (6), a Marian school-mate of Liam’s, watches on. It was one of many ‘back yard’ cricket matches being played by children while the Twenty20 match was in progress on Friday night. Liam is the son of Martyn Steffert, who coached Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports in the Waikato premier club rugby competition for the past four years. 0240616AD

Morris, Comins bowl ‘emKen Morris and Lyn Comins took

out the junior and men’s and wom-en’s singles championships respec-tively at Kihikihi Bowling Club.

Comins retained both her lives winning the women’s crown.

She beat Vi Davy 21-16 in the fi -nal but it was far from all one-way traffi c.

Comins needed four shots on both the 12th and 14th ends to lead 16-9.

Davy enjoyed a purple patch, scoring seven shots on ends 15 to 20, without reply, to draw level at 16-all.

Comins then closed out with a

match-winning 1, 3, 1 sequence.The men’s singles was a right royal

battle between Morris and Stratton Colbert - Morris eventually winning 21-15 after a marathon 27 ends, de-spite leading from go to whoa. Mor-ris won 16 ends and Colbert 11.

Colbert had taken a life off Morris in an earlier round.

Les Ashby and Tony Hart scored three shots on the last two ends to beat Kevin Hickey and Morrie Olsen 16-14 in the men’s champion-ship pairs fi nal at Kihikihi Bowling Club.

Veteran walker says it’s ‘the way to go’

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu Marathon Clinic member Kees Van

der Poel is like a good wine - he gets better with age.

The 76-year-old was awarded the Percy Lawn Trophy for most meritorious marathon at the club’s annual prizegiving.

He walked the Rotorua Marathon in 6.11.28, winning his age group.

Van der Poel says walking is a great way to keep fi t and meet people.

“It doesn’t damage the limbs like running does, although we all have a bit of wear and tear at this age.”

The veteran club member can be seen out walk-ing for 1½ hours, three times a week, in the vicin-ity of his home on Frontier Road.

“I love sight-seeing around Pirongia, it’s so pic-turesque,” he says.

There are no plans to slow down - he has ‘booked in’ for the South Pacifi c Masters Games in Hamil-ton next month, competing in the 5km, 10km and 21km walks.

He is also looking forward to competing, for the 11th consecutive year, in the two-day walk (30km each day) at Rotorua on March 18-19.

Van der Poel regularly makes the pilgrimage back to Holland for the ‘world famous’ annual walk.

Last year he was one of the 47,000 starters who walked 40km four days on end.

Such is the popularity of the event, organisers had to turn away 6000 entries in 2005.

Van der Poel says the event has been going for 90 years and always attracts more supporters than walkers.

He has competed in six of the walks. “If it wasn’t so far away I’d do it every year. “It’s a good excuse to get back home and see my

three sisters and three brothers in Holland. My wife also has her family back there.”

Van der Poel says the walk is held annually in June, making it an ideal time to get away from the cold here.

Coral Townley took out the Bruce Philpott Marathon Cup for best marathon performance by a female club.

Brian Gordon still came up with suffi ciently good times to take out the Runner of the Year, despite also taking up cycling this year.

Walker of the Year went to Doug Johnson. He

competed in more events this year than in the past, putting in a particularly noteworthy effort in the Percy Lawn Memorial Relay in Hamilton.

Club publicity offi cer Pip Annan was rewarded for her enthusiasm taking out the President’s Tro-phy for member of the year.

The club’s newest trophy for stirrer of the year went appropriately to John Byett - everyone on the day felt it had gone to the right person.

EVERGREEN walker Kees Van der Poel. 0240617AD

Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to win a double pass to see The Exponents live this Fri-day night at Hamilton’s Altitude.

Tickets for the local show are available from Tracs and usual outlets.

The show is part of the band’s countrywide tour of 11 centres.

In the tradition of the Sex Pistols, Duran Duran and, um, Go West the exponents line-up have got back together after fi ve years, to get it together and do what they do best: get on the road, pack out a pub and play more top forty singles than most bands can shake a stick at. In fact 18 of them, a Kiwi

record!Jordan Luck, Brian

Jones, Dave Gent and Harry have been re-hearsing to bring their energetic live show to town. Harry’s perfected that whole ‘count-in’ thing, Dave’s found his original strap, Brian’s been working on the gui-tar solo in ‘Airway Spies’ (clue Brian, there isn’t one) and Jordan has been practising his best version of ‘Good evening Invercargill and Hamil-ton!’ in the shower.

From the early years of ‘Victoria’, ‘Know Your Own Heart’ and ‘All I Can Do’ thru the mid-period ‘My Love For You’ and ‘Christchurch’ to the globe-straddling hits of ‘Why Does Love?’ and

‘Who Loves Who The Most?’ the band will romp through the high-lights and sidelights of their career, with a swagger and charm not seen since they fi rst graced our stages back in (gulp) 1980.

Uh-huh, 25 years and

not a hair out of place. Grab your friends, your tickets and your mobile (to wave during ‘Nameless Girl’) and come on down to get on up with the Exponents.

It’ll be some night out, we reckon. As this really is the last!

To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized enve-lope, address it to the ‘Exponents Double Pass Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Thursday.
