Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

The Baptism of the Lord

From our Holy Father, Pope Saint John Paul II: “‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” (Mk 1:11) These words, recounted by the Evangelist Mark, bring us straight to the heart of today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which closes the Christmas season. Today we commemorate the manifestation of the Trinitarian love, which occurred right at the beginning of the Messiah’s public activity. On the holy night in Bethlehem, Jesus was born among us in the poverty of a stable; on the day of the Epiphany, the Magi acknowledged him as the long-awaited Messiah of the nations; today, all our attention is focused on his person and mission. The Father speaks to him directly: ‘You are my beloved Son’, as the heavens are opened and the Spirit descends on him in the form of a dove. The scene on the banks of the Jordan thus presents the solemn proclamation of Jesus as the Son of God. An so his saving mission begins publicly. The baptism that the Lord receives takes place in the context of John the Baptist’s penitential preaching. The ritual act of being immersed in water, offered by the Precursor, was an outward sign of repentance for sins committed and of the desire for spiritual renewal. All this refers to the Christian sacrament of Baptism.

Ordinary Time

Tomorrow, January 11 begins a period in the liturgical cycle of the Church known as Ordinary Time because the Church will lead us on a meditation of the life of Christ in an “ordered” way. Our attention will be focused on the life of Our Lord as recorded in the Gospel of Saint Luke. You may want to meditate on the Gospel of Saint Luke over the next several weeks until Lent. Finding Christ in our daily lives will help to make the ordinary extraordinary, reminding us to keep a supernatural view of the people and events around us.

“The Lord was Baptized, not to be cleansed Himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters,

cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of Baptism.”

St. Ambrose of Milan

Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him,

solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“Just as a man cannot live in the flesh unless he is born in the flesh, even so a man cannot have the spiritual life of grace unless

he is born again spiritually. This regeneration is effected by Baptism: ‘Unless a man is born again of water and the Holy Spirit,

he cannot enter into the kingdom of God’ [Jn 3:5].”

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

What a beautiful time of year to remind us that Jesus did not come to us on a throne, but in silence with only His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, His father Joseph, and some shepherds. He was born in a stable; lacking the comforts most new babies have. He is still here 2,000 years later, in silence, hidden in the Sacred Host. What a truly special and humble way Jesus has chosen to stay with us. When we see Jesus hidden in the Sacred Host we can begin to see Him in all other human beings. He reminds us that we are never alone in our earthly struggles and that He will correct our human weaknesses and help us to grow in love and holiness.

Think of spending just one hour per week with Our Lord. Sign-up sheets for a new session running from February through April are in the back of the church. Adoration is on Wednesdays from 12:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., concluding with a Holy Hour. For more information call Mary Stier at 703.768.7167.

DIVINE MERCY CENACLE The Divine Mercy Cenacle meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 10 A.M. in the St. Joachim Room to experience the splendor of our Catholic Faith through Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and The Diary of St. Faustina, using a formation manual written by the Marians of the Immaculate Conception and Dr. Bryan Thatcher. Cenacles are now worldwide. Please stop by to visit and learn more about how Trust in God reveals God's Love and Mercy and healing that Our Lord offers each one of us. All are welcome. For questions, please call Harry or Lynne Dolton at 703.960.0592.

FAITH DIRECT If you are signed up with Faith Direct, please note

that it takes 6-8 weeks for envelopes to stop being sent.

PRAYER IN TIME OF SICKNESS O Jesus, You suffered and died for us. You understand suffering.

Teach me to understand my suffering as You do; to bear it in union with You; to offer it with You to atone for my sins And to bring Your grace

to souls in need. Calm my fears; increase my trust. May I gladly accept Your holy will and become more like You in trial.

If it be Your will, restore me to health so that I may work for Your honor and glory and the salvation of all men. Amen.
