John Henry Newman was born in London in 1801 and died in Birmingham in 1890. At the age of 21, he became a fellow (we would say college professor) at Oriel College, Oxford, and then at age 24 he was ordained a priest in the Church of England. Newman spent fifteen years serving as both a university teacher and the parish priest of the university church in Oxford, St Mary the Virgin. From these positions, he became the primary leader of the Tractarian or Oxford Movement - an attempt to retrieve the Catholic roots of the Church of England from its Protestant origin, but in 1843 he resigned from his dual positions because of profound doubts about the identity of the Church of England. Newman and a few friends established lodgings in simple cottages in Littlemore, a village just outside of Oxford, and for two years he read, studied, and prayed in the hope of finding a way to resolve his doubts. Finally, on 9 October 1845, Newman was received into full communion with the Catholic Church by an Italian missionary priest, and then he went to Rome for two years of priestly formation. Newman was ordained to the priesthood in 1847 in Rome, and then he returned to England to establish an Oratory - a community of priests organized after the pattern established in the 16th century by a great leader of the Catholic Reformation, Saint Philip Neri. Newman’s English Oratory was established in the grimy industrial city of Birmingham, and he spent the rest of his life in Birmingham (with some time away in Ireland founding a Catholic university in Dublin) building up the Catholic Church in Great Britain. Because of his departure from the Church of England and entrance into the Catholic Church, Newman was held in contempt for many years by people on both sides. Some Protestants regarded him a crypto-papist, and some Catholics thought of him as a Protestant plant. Newman defended himself in a spiritual autobiography called Apologia Pro Vita Sua (an English text despite its Latin title and a literary and theological masterpiece), and his life’s work was vindicated in 1879 when Pope Leo XIII made him a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. Cardinal Newman, as he has been known since, was declared Venerable in 1991 and Blessed in 2010, and from 13 October 2019 he will be forever known as Saint John Henry Newman. Father Newman

15 September 2019

Dear Friends in Christ,

Blessed John Henry Newman will be raised to the altars of the Church as Saint John Henry on Sunday 13 October 2019 by Pope Francis during Mass at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and in observance of the occasion, I will teach a Sunday school class on the life and work of Saint John Henry from 9.15 to 10.15 in McGrady Hall that same morning.

Throughout the English-speaking world, many chaplaincies for Catholic university students are called Newman Centers in honor of the greatest religious thinker of the 19th century.

Team Saint Mary’sIn support of Make-A-Wish SC

A group of St Mary’s parishioners has formed a team to help raise funds for Make-A-Wish SC. In order to do this, the team has agreed that together they will raise a minimum of $15,000 to help grant wishes to children who

suffer from life threatening illnesses in the state of South Carolina. The granting of wishes is not just a “fun time” for these children and their families. Our faith has taught us that we are at once both physical and spiritual creatures. Both families and physicians have stated many times over that the granting of these wishes brings both physical healing and the courage to undergo the countless tests, procedures, chemotherapy, and emergency room visits these little ones must endure. In addition to raising funds, each of the team members has been training for and will participate in the Trailblaze Challenge – a hike of 28.3 miles along the Foothills Trail - completed in a single day.

If you would like to help bring the gift of joy to those who suffer so much and are not able to enjoy many of the pleasures in life that most of us take for granted, then please go to the Team St Mary’s website link below – and support our team of Trailblazers. Any offering would be most graciously appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon John Heuser at [email protected]://secure2.wish.org/site/TR/Trailblaze/Make-A-WishSouthCarolina?team_id=22092&pg=team&fr_id=3267

Introduction to Catholicism Wednesdays 6.30–7.30 pm in Sacred Heart Hall (Msgr. Gwynn Room)

Do you or someone you know want to learn more about what Catholics believe? Has a family member, co-worker, or friend been asking you questions about Catholicism that you feel ill-equipped to answer?

If so, our course called An Introduction to Catholicism is for you. Join us this fall as we answer such questions as What is Catholicism? Is it in the Bible? Did the Lord Jesus found the Catholic Church? As well as many other questions about the origins of Catholic Christianity and the shape of Christian faith and life within the Catholic Church.

This course is both for non-Catholics seeking to understand Catholic teaching as well as for current Catholics who seek to better know their faith. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm from Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in his holy Catholic Church.

The Scriptural Basis of the Seven Sacraments

Wednesdays 6.30–7.30 pm in McGrady Hall (Church Undercroft)

After the resurrection, Jesus told the Apostles, "behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age." Mt 28:20. This proclamation is realized in the Church's celebration of the sacraments of the new covenant. The sacraments are an extension of the incarnation and each sacrament is a unique encounter with the Lord Jesus. In this class we will explore the biblical foundations of the seven sacraments.

Spiritual DirectionSt Mary’s has two trained, certified, Catholic Spiritual Directors available for individual spiritual direction. Spiritual direction is a time-honored Christian term for a conversation in which a directee is seeking a spiritual director who is specifically educated and experienced about the ways God may be moving in one’s life, directly or indirectly. The director is one who is present to the directee by offering holy listening skills and spiritual support. This creates a confidential environment for the directee to openly and prayerfully explore where God’s Spirit is leading in their life. A spiritual director walks with the directee as a companion on God’s path. Spiritual direction is neither psychotherapy nor pastoral counseling that aim to solve specific problems. Inquiries can be made by contacting Deacon Tom Whalen at [email protected]. Meetings are usually scheduled once a month and last for one hour. There is no charge.

Congratulations toJack Harrison Nash who was baptized last week.

PARISH MOVIE NIGHT

All parishioners are invited to a showing of the movie: The Reluctant Saint: Joseph of Cupertino

Sponsored by theSt Mary’s Council of Catholic Women

Friday, 27 September 2019Gallivan Hall

7.00 pmNo Cost

Run Time: 1 hr. 46 mins.Rated: Not rated*

Maximilian Schell stars as "the flying friar," St. Joseph of Cupertino, in this heartwarming and amazing true story of the humble Franciscan friar who literally rose to sainthood. In the impoverished village of seventeenth century Cupertino, Italy, Joseph's peasant mother convinces the reluctant Abbott (Ricardo Montalban) to accept her son into the monastery. With the support of the kindly local Bishop who sees in him a great deal more than others do, and by a series of miraculous incidents, the simple but pious Joseph is ordained a priest. Yet some are convinced that it is the devil, not God, who is responsible for Joseph's miraculous powers until a final miracle reveals to all his true sanctity.

*This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. It may contain violence indicative of the life and times of the saint or character portrayed. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children.

At the movie night we will provide an option sheet with discussion questions to engage children as well as adults on their ride home. More information on the movie is available on the FORMED website at https://formed.org.
