FROM GREEN TO GOLD

I wrote this column before I left for Wisconsin, so that means I don’t know if I can rejoice because my Packers are playing again this weekend in the conference showdown. It also means I don’t know if I should be grieving because my Packers went down in defeat at home last Sunday to the Cowboys. It is probably safe to say that I enjoyed watching the game, not at Lambeau as we didn’t have tickets, but in the comfort of the home of my sister Karen, who was hosting all of us. In addition, I really cannot report on how my trip to God’s country (Wisconsin) went as it hasn’t happened yet. So, I will comment on both the game and my visit here next week. I should have something to say about the Super Bowl which is two weeks away with the hope again that Green Bay is part of that championship game. On to more important matters, we now find ourselves once again in the Church season called Ordinary Time. The liturgical colors of this season are green and gold. Those just happen to be the Packer colors as well, so maybe that is a sign. Of course Our Lord tells us not to look for signs, so I won’t. Ordinary Time may be a somewhat confusing title for this current season. It is not Advent or Christmas, Lent or Easter. In that sense then it is more “ordinary,” but in many ways there is nothing ordinary about any Church season for each season is truly a time to grow in holiness and ever closer to Heaven. This first part of Ordinary Time which will take us up to Ash Wednesday and Lent tries to focus us on the public ministry of Our Lord. The second part which comes as the Easter Season ends focuses us on the Church Herself, as the institution Jesus established here on earth for us to help us answer God’s call to holiness. It is the Church through which all of Christ’s graces flow to us. It is with the sacraments, administered by the Church, which in a particular way bring us those graces. Today we begin five and a half weeks of that focus on Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The way the Church celebrates these different times of the year is really a great gift to us, where culturally, sacramentally, and spiritually we live our lives through a one year cycle, preparing us for what is to come beyond this world, specifically the eternal world. As such then, may we make the best of these next weeks. One way to do so is with our Sermon on the Mount series which begins this Tuesday evening at 7:30 P.M. in the Lyceum. This series is four sessions long and will have as a topic the Sacraments of Penance, The Eucharist, Baptism, and Holy Orders. As they have done at least once before our Catholic Daughters are co-sponsoring this series along with our parish religious education office. Hopefully you can keep your next four Tuesdays open for this way to come to know the sacraments better and live our Faith more fully. Before closing this week I wanted to briefly address one topic that is occasionally questioned by some of you, specifically it is why we say the St. Michael Prayer at the end of most Masses. It actually goes all the way back to 1884 when Pope Leo XIII had a mystical vision of St. Michael battling Satan. He saw some truly horrible sights and then the victory of St. Michael over the Evil One. In response he composed the prayer and had it prayed after Masses. That practiced stopped in 1970 with the reform of the Mass. Then in 1994 Pope (Saint) John Paul II encouraged the prayer to be said again with all the evil in the world. We didn’t do so here at St. Mary’s until 2002 when there was much fear throughout the Washington area due to random sniper attacks. Since that time we have prayed this powerful prayer invoking protection from evil and the Evil One.

In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

"Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life." - Catechism of the Catholic Church 2270

"America you are beautiful...and blessed. ...The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want equal justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then America, defend life." - Saint John Paul II

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The Christmas season is a beautiful time of year, reminding us that Jesus did not come on a throne, but in silence, with only His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, His father, Joseph, and some shepherds. He was born in a stable, lacking the comforts new babies have. He absolutely does not want to let go of us and is still here , 2000 years later, in silence, hidden in the Sacred Host. What a truly special and humble way Jesus has chosen to stay with us and how fortunate we are to have the gift of faith! Think of spending just one hour a week with Our Lord. Sign up sheets for a new session running from February through April are in the back of the church. Adoration is on Thursdays from 12:30-7:30 P.M., concluding with a Holy Hour. For more information call Mary Stier at 703.768.7167.

“People are hungry for God. Do you see that? Quite often we look but do not see. We are all passing through this world.

We need to open our eyes and see.”

Almighty and Eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their

duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for

Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones.

Shield your joyous ones. And for all Your love's sake. Amen.

LORD TEACH ME TO PRAY Would you like to develop a deeper relationship with God by learning how to pray in the spirit of St. Ignatius? Come be part of a 12 week series for all women entitled, Lord, Teach Me To Pray (LTMTP).

LTMTP is a three-part prayer series based on Ignatian Spirituality. Part 1, “Praying Christian Virtues”, will introduce you to the meditative and contemplative way of prayer devised by St. Ignatius of Loyola.

We will meet as a group 2 hours each week for 12 weeks. Each participant will be asked to spend 15 minutes in prayer each day on the assigned Scripture passages.

The series starts February 3 in St. Mary’s Lyceum 313 Duke Street, and will meet from 9-11 A.M. If you would like to join us, contact Bonnie Hourigan at 571.309.1693, or Melissa Manaker at 703.350.5015, by January 26.

PATRICIANS: "Joan of Arc, Maid of Orleans" is the topic for this month's Patricians which meets Saturday, January 25, 9 - 11 A.M. in St. Mary’s Lyceum. St. Joan is not only patron of France and martyrs, but also for captives, military personnel, people ridiculed for their piety, prisoners, soldiers, and women who have served in the WAVES and WAC. All adult Catholics are invited to this monthly discussion group which gives lay Catholics an opportunity to grow in knowledge of the faith while discussing an aspect of Catholic life in the comfort of a prayerful, family setting. Fr. Nicholas Barnes serves as spiritual director and provides additional commentary. Refreshments provided. Contact Linda Melone at 703.725.8526 or [email protected].
