Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Happy 2029th Birthday Mary!

We had a wonderful celebration here at Saint Mary for Our Patroness’ birthday. In addition to our usual three daily Masses in the Church, it was a joy to welcome Father Dennis Kleinmann back to Saint Mary’s School on Tuesday September 8th for the dedication of the altar and blessing of the new school chapel. Father and I concelebrated a Mass in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with our third grade students who last year were the residents of the classroom next door to the chapel during the construction phase. To those who suffer come rewards! Our principal Mrs. Janet Cantwell, our assistant principals and some faculty and staff were also present for this historic and joyful celebration. For the Mass we used our very beautiful historic chalice that you will see at Masses of particular significance throughout the liturgical year. Later in the day the children enjoyed a cupcake feast in honor of the birth of our Queen and Mother.

Continuing our celebration, Tuesday evening over 100 folks gathered in the church for the solemn recitation of the rosary, entrusting our intentions for the parish, our parish families and our own personal intentions to the Mother of God. There certainly was a power in that many rosaries being prayed at once in a church dedicated to Our Lady. You could feel it. Then over to the Lyceum for a cake and champagne toast to Mary which of course included the singing of “Happy Birthday” and a highlighting of all women present with the name or derivative of “Mary”…quite a good showing! All five priests of our parish were able to be present, along with two guests and classmates of Father Rich. A wonderful program of classical music followed (yes, Saint Mary’s has talent!) with performances featuring a tuba, saxophone, violin, piano and voice. A resolution was passed to make this an annual event. Of course evenings like this don’t just happen and I extend my thanks to so many who participated under the leadership of Father Rich Miserendino. From beautifully printed programs, several rehearsals, table set ups, flowers, centerpieces and cleanup, well done and a thousand thanks!

Speaking of Father Rich, this week we bid him a fond farewell as he returns to the Eternal City to complete an advanced ecclesiastical degree in Sacred Theology. While he has only been with us a brief time, he has contributed much to our parish community, especially sharing with us his love for music and for learning the truths of our faith. He has been a dependable assistant to me, helping with the many parish Masses, confessions, baptisms, homebound visits and nursing home chaplain. We are grateful to God and to Bishop Loverde for assigning him to us so we might share his first few months of priestly life and look forward to his return with us at Christmas, God willing. If you happen to be visiting Rome this year, please look him up and feed him, as everyone deserves an occasional break from seminary meals prepared for 200! You can reach Father Rich at the Pontifical North American College, 00120 Vatican City State, Europe.

Please join us in thanking Father Rich at a coffee and donut reception following the 10am Mass Sunday (today) in the Lyceum.

SPRED Though every child learns differently, some may have learning disabilities

that have kept them from participating in our parish CCD classes.

For this reason, St. Mary’s also offers classes specially set up for these children, aged 6–18, so they may experience the richness of our faith in a community of same-aged students, their families, middle school and high school volunteer helpers, and the clergy of our parish - all coordinated by qualified catechists. This way, these children are fully integrated into their

Catholic community as they journey through the important lessons and sacraments that bind us all together.

This program, nationally known as SPRED, is now in its eight year at St. Mary’s, and meets Sunday mornings from 10:30 A.M.–noon, biweekly,

on a schedule concurrent with the rest of our parish’s CCD classes.
