Celebrating 164 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea

3rd Sunday of Easter

April 30, 2017

Alleluia! Alleluia! These words ring out as we are in Easter Time. Alleluia! Alleluia! Let

the anthems ring as we run to tell the Good News!

One of my theology professors noted that today’s Gospel about the disciples on the road to Emmaus is

one of the best summaries we have about celebrating Eucharist. We bring

all that we have and are with us when we come to Mass: the disciples

“were conversing about all the things that had occurred.” The story of

faith is proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word: they told the “stranger”

what had occurred in Jerusalem. The homily interprets life in light of the

Word of God, “he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the

Scriptures.” We become aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, “Stay

with us.” And in the Liturgy of the Eucharist we recognize him in the

breaking of bread, sent forth to share our faith, “they set out at once . . .

[and] recounted what had taken place.” Celebrating word and sacrament

transforms us to take Christ to the world and see with new eyes.

In both the First and Second Readings today, Peter tells the story of Jesus

(First Reading) and connects the story with all the scriptures to help his

hearers see who Jesus was and to invite faith in him. And in the Second

Reading, Peter exhorts his hearers to live differently because of their faith:

put your faith and hope in God who judges impartially.

So too, on this Third Sunday of Easter we are invited to reflect on our lives

in light of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Where does what

we hear and celebrate MAKE OUR HEARTS BURN? How does celebrating the Mass help us to know Christ

more personally in our lives? How do you proclaim the Good News?

NEXT SUNDAY at the 11:30am Mass ALL

OUR FIRST COMMUNION CANDIDATES will receive

their First Holy Communion! What a glorious day for our Candi-

dates and their families as they will come together to celebrate at the Ta-

ble of the Lord and received Him for the very first time. Say a prayer for

them as they will be become one with us at the Table of the Lord.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your generosity in the Sunday collections. This LAST

QUARTER of the fiscal year is so VITAL and your continued faithfulness in the Sunday Collection will help to

MEET all our financial obligations and liabilities for the year! AGAIN, thank you for your generosity. Be

blessed this Easter Time!

Bulletin Prayer List

A miracle every day

There is a sort of miracle every day. There is

not a day without some delicate attention of

God, some sign of His love and care, like the

time we ran out of food because of rains and

flood. Just that time the schools closed in

Calcutta and all the bread was given to us so that the people

would not go hungry. For two days, our poor had bread and

bread, until they could eat no more. The greatest miracle is

that God can work through nothings, small things like us. He

uses us to do His work.

Parish Events Bible Study & Quiet Prayer

This week we return to our regular Bible Study beginning

with the Gospel of Matthew. We will meet in the chapel at

11:00am and again at 7:00pm. Choose the time that’s best

for you and join for an hour of walking with the Lord

through scriptures. No prior knowledge is needed. Just

bring your Bible and an open heart and join us.

The schedule for Rosary has changed. We will

no longer have Rosary on Friday’s. We will

continue to gather in the Chapel Monday -

Thursday at 9:30am for the Rosary.

Please Note: Rosary is also scheduled

every Monday Evening at 7:15pm in the

Chapel.

Family Perspective

Too many families take too little time to talk about

their faith. Try an Emmaus family journey. Talk about

Jesus and your faith on the ride to church. Or, make

time this week to meet with a trusted friend with

whom you can talk and pray and even share a meal.

Where two or more are gathered in His Name, Jesus is

present in their midst.

Welcome this weekend the newly baptized -

One-Time Special Collection - This weekend April 29th & 30th for The Trinity Dome at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and dioceses across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to hold a one-time

special second collection to support the mosaic ornamenta-tion of the Trinity Dome. The National Shrine has been a century in the making since the laying of its foundation stone in 1920. This collection will provide the faithful with an oppor-tunity to contribute to the legacy begun by their ancestors, to include honoring their Catholic heritage and entrusting them-selves and their families to the Mother of God. Please be a generous as possible.

2nd Collection

Quiet Prayer

Quiet Prayer will meet in the chapel at 12:30pm on

Tuesday. 20 minutes of quiet prayer will be followed by a

short study from Everything Belongs. Come and see if

quiet prayer might be a way to enhance your prayer life.

12 Step Spirituality

12 Step Spirituality meets in the chapel on Thursday, May

4th, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm to continue our reflection on

Seeds of Grace: Reflections on the Spirituality of the

Twelve Steps. All twelve stoppers are welcome. If your

program could use a spiritual boost, join us this week.

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovacs

Director of Music and Liturgy LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Recently, I have noticed just how surrounded I am by love! I watched three of my friends get married within the past two weeks (which is

why there is a substitute pianist this Saturday.) My friends and choir family are so generous with their kind words and acts of appreciation.

I have also had several (blood) family parties to attend that remind me of how great my relatives are! I am surrounded by love. And best of

all, the season of Easter is affirmation that we are truly and entirely loved by God, our Father!

This weekend’s prelude encompasses the Gospel message of those men from Emmaus whose minds were opened to the Word of the

Scriptures. Sacred composer Bob Hurd writes out a beautiful melody that envisions the love of our Lord as we turn to him when we are

weary in body and mind. Those at 11.30am mass will get to hear a contemporary song that celebrates Jesus’s resurrection!

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir and Contemporary ensemble meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth

Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument

during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.
