St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 26 May 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, Here are a few updates on our finances and coming projects: If our collections in June remain as they have been during the last few months, we will finish this fiscal year with a budget surplus of just over 1%. In other words, we are right on target, and that is thanks to your generosity. The new fiscal year begins on 1 July 2019, and to account for inflation we have planned for an increase of 2% in our costs, which means that we need an increase of 2% in our income. So starting in July our target for the weekly offertory will be $35,200, and we ask every household in the parish to increase you support by 2%. This means, for example, that if you were giving $75 per week until now, then starting in July that would go up to $76.50. An increase of that small size, if everyone makes and sustains it, will allow us to pay all our bills and remain financially healthy. In addition to asking for this modest increase in offertory income, we are also in the first of five years of asking for gifts to our capital campaign called Forward in Faith. And here it is helpful to recall our stewardship guidelines for your tithe: 5% directly to the parish in the primary offertory, 1% directly to the diocese in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, and the remaining 4% to other charities of your choice, including our capital campaign. The Forward in Faith campaign runs through the end of 2023, and between now and then we need to raise $6 million for St Mary’s and $1 million for our diocesan bi-centennial campaign for a total of $7 million. Since last December we have raised $2 million in gifts and pledges and have another $5 million to go in the next four and a half years. In the coming weeks, I will write to the parish with exciting news about a key project for this campaign which has not yet been announced, and at that time we will also list several naming opportunities which will allow donors to offer a gift in memory or honor of someone dear to them. Everything we do here to provide a beautiful and inviting space for our parish family and for all of our visitors is made possible only by your continuing generosity, and I am deeply grateful for your commitment to St Mary’s. Dear Friends in Christ,

Here are a few updates on our finances and coming projects:

If our collections in June remain as they have been during the last few months, we will finish this fiscal year with a budget surplus of just over 1%.

New Altar Server TrainingOn Tuesday, May 28 Father Duncan will be training new altar servers, and all boys who are at least ten years old are welcome to attend in the church from 6.30 to 8.00 pm. For more information, contact Fr Duncan

at [email protected].

Do your task as altar servers with love, devotion and faithfulness; do not enter a church for the celebration with superficiality but rather, prepare yourselves inwardly for Holy Mass! Assisting your priests in service at the altar helps to make Jesus closer, so that

people can understand, can realize better: he is here. You collaborate to make him more present in the world, in every day life, in the Church and everywhere.

Honor our Mothers During MayEvery weekend during the month of May, the St Mary’s Respect Life team, in cooperation with Birthright, will be collecting new baby items for Mothers who have made the choice to keep their babies.

They are in most need of maternity clothes, receiving blankets, baby wash & shampoo, diaper rash ointment, hooded towels, baby wash cloths, size 3-4 diapers and sleepers sizes 0-3.

Collection boxes will be located on the first floor of Sacred Heart Hall during the entire month of May. This is one small way to say: “Thank you MOM for giving me life.” Any inquiries for the St Mary’s Respect Life team may be directed to Mary Jo Falkosky at: [email protected].

Homeworks Summer SessionYouth & Adult Volunteers Needed

7-12 July

Home Works was founded in 1996 by Hank Chardos, a Columbia area parishioner, who was challenged by his daughter to “do something” about the horrible conditions she witnessed the poor living in. Hank established Homeworks as a nonprofit, Christ centered organization providing home repair services to low-income homeowners. Repairs are made primarily by youth under adult supervision as a means to not only help those in need, but also to build character and providing mentoring to our young people in the process. Since 1996, more than 45,000 youth and adult volunteers have repaired more than 2,700 homes for elderly, disabled or veteran homeowners who qualify based on income/ownership guidelines.

A typical homeowner assisted by Home Works is a 70-year-old widow, annually living on $12,000. Home Works oversees various repair projects, ranging from the replacement of roofs to the construction of ramps, gutting of bathrooms, repairing of ceilings and painting of walls. Home Works creates a context in which youth are mentored in life-skills as they intersect poverty-stricken homeowners in a context of transformation for both. At every Home Works repair project, construction meets compassion.

Registration is open from now through 17 June. Adult volunteers are especially needed, even if only for a day or two. If you are 14 or older and are interested in participating in this life changing and challenging week of service to those in need, please visit HomeWorksofAmerica.org and click on the “Get Involved/Summer Sessions” button, or contact Deacon John Heuser at 864.679.4113 for more information.
