FROM GREEN TO GOLD

While Father Kleinmann is still away and recovering, in his place for this weekly column, I am filling in for him. These are big shoes to fill indeed. The task is not made any easier given the disastrous and appalling outcome of a certain midwestern football team's game from last weekend. Words alone cannot alleviate such sadness or lift up those who are cast down and downhearted! Until the start of baseball season, I will place my sports hopes in the University of Virginia men's basketball team. On a more serious note, Father Kleinmann is continuing to rest and recover in Wisconsin. For anyone who is unaware, while on vacation visiting his family in Milwaukee earlier this month, Father Kleinmann required a non-invasive procedure to address a heart issue. At the time of this writing, I am not sure when we can anticipate his return but hopefully in the near future. Please continue to pray for him. If you would like to express any thoughts or concerns, the best forum to do so would be leaving anything at the parish office. We will pass everything along to him when he returns. I believe this a wonderful time to point out two things. First, we are a parish community and a spiritual family. For many of us, we might know someone who is struggling with a particular situation or we could be experiencing a challenging moment ourselves. It is important for us to lean on each other for prayers and other tangible signs of support. Where would we be without our faith community? Where would we be without the Church? Even though I am a priest, I am still, like all of you, part of this parish community. You are my spiritual family. Please take this opportunity to recommit yourself to everyone at St. Mary's as your brother or sister in the Lord. All of us, myself included, look to our pastor, who models this loving concern and shepherds us in our needs. Next, I would like to make everyone more explicitly aware of how many people have stepped up and contributed so much on behalf of the parish in the absence of Father Kleinmann. Frequently, many of these persons go unnoticed. I wanted to say how tremendous the entire staff of St. Mary's has been --Noelle Hiester, Mary Eileen Barber, Emily Liutkus, Mayra Saunders, Dr. Charles Saik, John Harchick and his staff, Angela Lademan, Janet Cantwell and the entire St. Mary's School faculty and staff. They contribute and do most of their work behind the scenes. I am privileged to work with them and see their passion, enthusiasm and dedication for doing what is best for St. Mary's. In addition, countless volunteers and other engaged individuals with our parish rose to the occasion. Several priests, moreover, from across the diocese, including some familiar faces, have assisted us with our Mass schedule. I cannot express how much all of this has helped and accomplished. Along with Fathers Kleinmann and Ruskamp, I would like to thank all of these people for helping so much during this time. Finally, this is a wonderful opportunity to thank God for His tremendous blessings. We are most fortunate to be members of such a fantastic and caring community, as evidenced by these past few weeks. A true Christ-centered community models the Good Shepherd--Jesus' loving concern--for those most in need. I believe we are such a parish. Which raises a logical question: how can we not invite and welcome other people to join us? Who wouldn't want to be part of a true Christ-centered community? Even though I have only been here for seven months, I am so thankful to have such a magnificent spiritual home and family.

God Bless, Father Barnes

40 DAYS FOR LIFE February 18 – March 29, 2015

Christians throughout Northern Virginia are encouraged to take part in the 40 Days for Life campaign to save unborn babies from the tragedy of abortion and to save their mothers from a lifetime of regret. This campaign is an international effort to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigils. Everyone can help in some way. The campaign includes three components: 1. Prayer and fasting (as the Lord leads) for an end to abortion; 2. A peaceful prayer vigil at the site where abortions are taking place; and 3. An educational outreach to the community. The focus of the Alexandria campaign is a 40-day prayer vigil outside the abortion site at 101 S. Whiting St. This is a peaceful and educational presence designed to save lives and to raise awareness about alternatives to abortion. Participants are encouraged to spend time standing for life in prayerful witness at this site.

For more information, or to volunteer to help, please contact: Sara Dina at 571.218.6224 or [email protected]

2015 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS! This month Bishop Loverde will send a mailing regarding the 2015 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2015 BLA is “Stewards of Christ Sharing Gospel Joy!” After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a sacrificial pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve thousands of people in our diocese. When we join together as one Body in Christ, we can do so much for so many!

"Perfection is founded entirely on the love of God: Charity is the bond of perfection; and perfect love of God

means the complete union of our will with God’s."

Saint Alphonsus de Ligouri

PRAYER TO MARY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS BY ST. JOHN BOSCO: Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christian, how sweet it is to come to your feet imploring your perpetual help. If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children, how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me? Grant then to me, I implore you, your perpetual help in all my necessities, in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations. I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering. Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners. Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life. Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians, that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The Christmas season is a beautiful time of year, reminding us that Jesus did not come on a throne, but in silence, with only His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, His father, Joseph, and some shepherds. He was born in a stable, lacking the comforts new babies have. He absolutely does not want to let go of us and is still here, 2000 years later, in silence, hidden in the Sacred Host. What a truly special and humble way Jesus has chosen to stay with us and how fortunate we are to have the gift of faith! Think of spending just one hour a week with Our Lord. Sign up sheets for a new session running from February through April are in the back of the church. Adoration is on Thursdays from 12:30-7:30 P.M., concluding with a Holy Hour. For more info call Mary Stier at 703.768.7167.

Almighty and Eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their

duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for

Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones.

Shield your joyous ones. And for all Your love's sake. Amen.
