Welcome to Sharjah

Opening Message

This eleventh edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.

Blessed with extraordinarily beautiful landscapes and the best of waterside living, Sharjah is known as a natural wonder of the Arab world.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Sharjah, a wonderland for culture aficionados and nature enthusiasts alike. The emirate’s dramatic landscape means an incredible array of activities is on offer to delight all, while a busy schedule of festivals adds to the mix in the cities.

With coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, waterside living is very much a part of Sharjah’s special character. And with an interior that includes desert, oases, wadis and mountains, Sharjah boasts an incredible natural world overall.

But the beautiful landscape and adventurous activities are just a part of the emirate’s charm – stunning natural wonders aside, Sharjah proudly hosts more galleries, museums and attractions than anywhere else in the region. The ancient backstory can be discovered at the Natural History and Archaeology Museums, while the emirate’s modern interpretation of this proud heritage can be experienced at the hubs of Al Majaz Waterfront and Al Qasba.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy Sharjah’s special culture is at one of the many famous events lined up throughout the year. December’s Sharjah Water Festival is always a special occasion that celebrates the emirate’s heritage in a carnival atmosphere that is fun for all the family. Here the cultural and the entertaining combine and we welcome you all to enjoy it.

Education

Success Stories: Ecoventure Field Studies CentreEcoventure’s Al Awadi Field Studies Centre provides thousands of young people with a vivid and enjoyable educational experience every year, building awareness of the natural beauty around them.

In the heart of the Sharjah desertscape sits an educational centre founded on the belief that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.

The Al Awadi Field Studies Centre is one of three such centres in the UAE run by Ecoventure, a schools-focused outdoor education company that provides experiences that combine education, adventure, environmental awareness and the highest safety standards. The location of the unique, custom-built residential study centre provides easy access to a variety of different habitats, including desert, mangroves, wadis, mountains and the unique coastline of Sharjah.

Whether staying for a single day or up to four, each programme takes in the fauna and flora of the unique habitats of both the mangroves and the desert, and features expert tuition from fully trained and highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers. The numerous field programmes

are suitable for pupils of various ages, from primary school through secondary school and up to the senior level programme, designed for students up to 18 years old.

Each Field Studies and Adventure Camp programme utilises the very latest

equipment and methodologies, and students have access to a dedicated scientific laboratory, equipped with a range of specialised equipment for conducting experiments. Tailor-made study programmes can also be created to cater to the specific requests of a participating school, including wadi, mountain, erosion and urban studies.

The accommodation facilities are equally comprehensive, though students and teachers have the choice of staying in air conditioned dormitories or ‘closer-to-nature’ tents for attendees who fully subscribe to the view that learning experiences outside the classroom are often the most memorable. www.ecoventureme.com +971 4 455 8777

Bee’ah plays a huge part in ensuring the natural beauty and diversity of Sharjah will be preserved for future generations.

One of the greatest of modern challenges is that of caring for the environment. In the UAE, where there has been such dramatic recent growth, the challenge is particularly pressing, and the need to preserve natural resources is acutely felt in Sharjah, due to the great natural beauty and diversity.

Bee’ah was formed in 2007 to assess and address future environmental challenges and ensure that Sharjah is well-placed to meet them. From a staff of just three, the company has grown enormously, now employing more than 2,000 and serving more than a million.

Just one of the company’s bold aims is to divert 100% of the emirate’s waste away from landfills by the end of the first quarter of 2015. Central to

reaching this goal is the ability to recycle trash; the enormous Bee’ah Material Recovery Facility receives more than 800,000 tonnes of waste every year, from which recyclables are segregated and sorted. The plant is the largest facility of its kind in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world, and means that newspapers, magazines, aluminium, steel, paper and plastic are turned into new products, cutting down on the costs and energy needed to create new local products.

Bee’ah takes a holistic view of environmental issues, as a sustainable future cannot be built solely by dealing with waste once it has been produced. In addition to investing in beautification projects and waste collection, management and recycling infrastructure – an enormous amount of effort is put into the education of students, residents and visitors. stressing the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. www.beeah-uae.com +971 6 572 9000

Sharjah’s natural wonders are many and varied. The emirate is unique in having coastline to both the east and the west. In between is a breathtaking diversity of landscapes, providing an enormous variety of ways to get in touch with nature.

Natural Wonders

LeisureLeisure

Sharjah’s unique culture and heritage are mirrored in the emirate’s rich natural beauty. Diverse, beautiful and fascinating, it includes pristine white beaches and calm lagoons, empty desert, lush mangrove forests and the dramatic Hajar Mountains.

DesertPerhaps the first natural UAE environment many people think of is the desert. Yet almost any visitor will be surprised at the secrets it contains,

Did you Know? Sharjah is unique in having

coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

The desert interior is home to a rich variety of wildlife.

Through history the desert has been both sandy ocean-bed and lush fertile savannah.

Fossil hunting and snorkelling in Sharjah are both top class.

especially when pointed out by a knowledgeable guide. Many plants and creatures call this apparently inhospitable landscape their home, and can sometimes be spotted, but it’s just as fascinating to learn about those no longer here. Dinosaur age fossils and the archaeological findings at Jebel Faya of the first humans to leave Africa some 135,000 years ago paint thrilling pictures of ancient times. To get even closer to desert dwellers past and present, visit the Sharjah Archaeology Museum, and Sharjah Desert Park, in which are sited the Natural History & Botanical Museums and Arabian Wildlife Centre & Children’s Farm.

OceanThe idyllic East Coast, looking out onto the Gulf of Oman, may only be two hours from the metropolis of Sharjah, yet it is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Between seaside towns such as beautiful Dibba Al Hisn, Khorfakkan and Kalba sit easily

accessible picture-postcard beaches enjoyed by footballers, picnickers and fishermen.

Step off the beach and into the sea, and whether you dive or snorkel, a host of sealife can be viewed in the green-blue waters. Seahorses, whale sharks, turtles and manta rays, together with several wrecks and multicolour corals make dives here memorably spectacular.

The East Coast is ideal for a weekend break; several hotels and motels are situated close to the coast, though camping on the beach is a great way to stay connected to this great outdoors.

MountainReaching up beyond 2,000 metres at their highest UAE point, the Hajar Mountains are the tallest mountain range in the eastern Arabian peninsula. They are not only dramatic – they are also an important ecoregion, rich in plant life and supporting a number of rare animal species, some of which can only be found within their peaks, wadis and outcrops.

The mountains’ resident flora includes several endemic species. Shrubland at lower elevations gives way to richer plant life and then woodland, including first olive and fig trees and latterly junipers. In the cooler valleys fruit trees can be found.

Reptiles are plentiful here – and a number are unique to the Hajar Mountains. They share this unique landscape with vultures, mountain gazelle and the Arabian tahr, a solitary animal related to the goat family, with distinctive backward-arching horns, reddish-brown hair and a stripe running down its back.

The Hajar Mountains’ unique topography that supports this bounty of flora and fauna also creates weather unlike that typically found in the UAE. Afternoon thunderstorms during the summer and autumn are not uncommon.

West of Dhaid sits Fossil Rock, an appropriately named monolith whose 400 metres climb suddenly out of the sand that surrounds it. Off-roaders enjoy the plentiful challenges

to be found on the way up – as well as the dramatic ramp-like drive down – but some of the greatest pleasures are to found after stepping out of the vehicle. Abundant ancient fossils of marine shells and small sea creatures are waiting to be discovered here – a striking reminder that water covered much of Arabia millions of years ago, and that these surrounding sandy scenes used to lie beneath the ocean.

The great variety of wildlife in Sharjah includes unique species that can, with luck, be seen in the wild.

CreekLooking out onto the Indian Ocean, with the Hajar Mountains as a stunning backdrop, the mangrove forest of Khor Kalba contains some of the region’s rarest species and most precious habitat. Kayaking through the oldest Indian Ocean mangrove forests offers an opportunity that is similarly rare – the chance to see the critically endangered white-collared kingfisher and Syke’s Warbler. Khor Kalba is now a unique eco-tourism initiative that incorporates nature reserves, habitat regeneration, historical restorations and visitor facilities.

BeachPopular with walkers, picnickers and photographers, Sharjah’s beaches can be found inside and outside the city. Those on the coasts offer safe, white sand, palm-lined beaches with clear blue seas and gently shelving shores. The Khorfakkan beaches are a pleasant and delightful place to enjoy swimming or barbecuing along the coast

where many rocky outcrops are found. There are also charming sandy beaches and areas allocated for camping.

Sharjah city boasts several beaches, including the very safe Al Khan Beach, which extends all the way from the old village in Al Khan to Al Layyeh power station and is very popular during the weekends and holidays. The favourite spots for sunbathing are Al Khan Beach and Al Mamzar, while the ever-popular Corniche Beach is particularly busy at

weekends. Don’t forget to take precautions against the strong sun, and do remember that dress restrictions apply and so ladies should be suitably clothed.

Museums

Some 135,000 years ago man was sheltering under the rocky ridge of Jebel Faya, just beyond the landmark of Fossil Rock (pictured above). The world would have been a very different place way back then, but you can get a real insight into those and all subsequent peoples at the Sharjah Archaeology Museum.

The museum’s collection includes the recently found stone axe from Jebel Faya that led to the rewriting of the history of man’s earliest excursion from Africa. The museum offers a fantastic overview of the emirate’s story and has a mock-up of an archaeological dig. This helps bring to life a visit to one of their actual archaeological sites dating back 1,000 to 3,000 years, and the museum can advise on visits.

An impressive location to appreciate the more recent history is Khorfakkan. It is

such a natural harbour that it is easy to understand why it has been a draw to people over time and the earliest sites can be found high on the cliffs. The progression from rudimentary ancient settlers to the beginnings of today’s civilisation can then be understood with a visit to one of the East Coast forts, which tell of foreign forces and the nearby Al Bidyah Mosque, the UAE’s oldest mosque, which represents the crucial role of religion.

The perfect place to find out all about Sharjah’s landscapes – and to learn that it is very far from an empty wilderness.

Sharjah Desert Park

Sharjah Desert Park includes: Arabian Wildlife Centre Children’s Farm Natural History Museum Botanical Museum

The majestic Arabian Leopard is one of the rarest of the big cats – and nowhere has done more to save it than Sharjah. You can see these beautiful creatures at the Arabian Wildlife Centre safe in the knowledge that this is a truly world-leading conservation initiative. Adjoining, but with no public access, the Breeding Centre for Endangered Animals drives research to protect all of Arabia’s own precious wildlife.

The wildlife centre itself is thoughtfully designed with the animals in mind and there is an incredible variety to marvel at.

Children can then go on and pet more domesticated animals at the Children’s Farm, perhaps before a picnic in one of the pleasant designated areas.

Further fascinating insight into Sharjah’s natural wonders can be found at the Natural History and Botanical museums which detail the incredible adaptability of plant life and the surprising history of the desert landscapes. It is a highly recommended visit that will change the way you look at the surrounding desert.

Go For A RideAt any time of the year, fun of the four-legged variety can be had at Sharjah Equestrian & Racing Club (SERC), which boasts one of the Middle East’s largest indoor riding facilities. Take To The SandsA quintessential UAE experience is that of off-roading in the desert. The best way to safely enjoy drifting up and down the wide expanses of sand is by taking a tour with one of the many reputable desert safari companies operating in the emirate. The sensation of open space is amplified when – depending on the package taken – you stop for tea, or perhaps dinner and entertainment under a blanket of stars.

A Round Of GolfGolf lovers will hope that less sand is in evidence when they play at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club, the emirate’s first fully grassed course. Designed by Peter Harradine, the par-72 nine-hole course (played twice) is fully floodlit and features challenging bunkers and water hazards. A different challenge is presented by the Sharjah Wanderers Golf Club course, which makes use of the natural topography and comprises nine grassed ‘green’ holes

and nine ‘brown’ holes. Both courses welcome guests.

Take AimThe paintballing park at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club (SGSC) is rightly regarded

as one of the very best in the wider region. Jungle and desert arenas are filled with trenches, obstacles, hills and bridges – and floodlights mean the 150 players the park can accommodate can stay until 22:00. Targets of a different kind are on offer at Dubai Archers

Sand and grass, desert and parks, Sharjah is famed for both its pristine desert wilderness and its expansive lush parkland – all locations for family fun.

Relax in Sharjah at one of the many well-equipped and world-class spas and beach clubs.

Watch The SportOf course, sport in Sharjah can be enjoyed not only by participants. Throughout the cooler months of the year a host of sporting events take place that are just as enjoyable to watch.

One of the most traditional events one could observe in the region is a camel race. As with other sports, it has moved with the times, and now the ‘jockeys’ are in fact robots, each controlled by an occupant of one of the many 4WDs following each race. Progress has in no way diminished the atmosphere of the races, which are held at the Sharjah camel racecourse near Al Dhaid.

Horse racing is also close to the hearts of many Emiratis, and meetings are held in Sharjah from November to March. Entry is free. Showjumping and dressage competitions also take place throughout the season, hosted in Sharjah by the Equestrian and Racing Club.

The spectacular noise and drama of powerboating can be experienced on both the east and west coasts of Sharjah. In December, the Sharjah Formula 1 Powerboat Grand Prix takes place on Khalid Lagoon, while in March the Nations Cup sees the 225km/h (130mph) boats hammer around the buoyed course at Khorfakkan.

Cricket and football remain as popular as ever across the UAE, and Sharjah is no exception. Several of the emirate’s football clubs play in the country’s Premier League, whose sporting fixtures are always full of atmosphere. Atmosphere is also in plentiful supply at the emirate’s 27,000-capacity Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, which plays host to international matches featuring many of the world’s top teams, including UAE-based Pakistan and guest ‘home’ team Afghanistan. Many local competitions are held at Al Dhaid Cricket Village, which has also hosted the Bangladesh Twenty20 League.

Just RelaxIf you’ve overdone it enjoying one or more of the many activities on offer, try some indulgence of a more soothing kind. Sharjah’s many beach resorts provide access (for guests and paying visitors) to myriad pristine beaches and pampering facilities, while associated and standalone spas offer relief from aching muscles and sporting injuries; access to saunas, pools and Jacuzzis; a multitude of therapies and treatments; as well as body peels, manicures, pedicures, mother-to-be packages, body peels, aromatherapy and traditional and homeopathic treatments.

“Camel riding and racing are the most traditional of activities in the region. As with other sports, camel racing has moved with the times, and now the ‘jockeys’ are in fact robots, but progress has in no way diminished the atmosphere of the races, which are held at the Sharjah camel racecourse near Al Dhaid.”

Shopping

The beautiful and buzzing hubs of Al Majaz Waterfront and Al Qasba represent vibrant modern Sharjah, and host amazing dining and entertainment options. These are both magnetic hubs whether you come to eat or to simply wander by. With glittering collections of international restaurants and a dizzying array of cafes and ice cream parlours it is actually practically impossible

to not eat something when you pass by either of these.

Dining is only one part of the appeal. Both locations host regular shows, festivals and markets – and also have their own permanent attractions. Al Qasba is famed for its 60m high Eye of the Emirates ferris wheel and children’s play areas. Meanwhile Al Majaz Waterfront is home to the incredible Sharjah’s Musical Fountain

The shiny new Al Majaz Waterfront development features an amphitheatre of international restaurants.

which erupts in multicoloured dancing displays. It also boasts state-of-the-art playgrounds for children, including a waterplay one and an indoor one.

There is both plentiful parking and a ready supply of taxis at both venues – or you can take advantage of available boat trips.

Al Majaz Waterfront and Al Qasba are both sensational, world-class venues for dining, cafe-going and promenading.

Al Fresco DelightsSharjah is rightly renowned as an unbeatable shopping hotspot for truly authentic Arabian souvenirs.

Real Souvenirs

Central Souk, on Khalid Lagoon, is one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Souk Al Arsah can be found in the Heritage Area

With an array of atmospheric souks, Sharjah is proud of its authenticity. These souks are great places to head to for real souvenirs. As well as being able to buy traditional items such as carpets, textiles, jewellery, lanterns and antique trinkets, the atmosphere of the souks themselves will be a lasting memory of your time in Sharjah.

The largest and most famous is the vast Central Souk, which is also known as Blue Souk due to its colourful tiled roof. It is huge and is shaped like two grand railway stations, connected by pedestrian bridges. This is a famous hub for the region’s best carpet dealers, antique specialists and jewellers. Storekeepers are genuinely experts in their field and you should take up their offers to share a pot of tea so that you can benefit from their expertise – and build up a relationship to help you barter to a better price. The carpet sellers are on the first

floor, while on the ground floor skilled jewellers can be found who will tailor-make items upon instruction.

This personal service extends throughout all the souks and engaging in conversation often leads to successful shopping experiences. Over at Souk Al Arsah, the oldest market place in the UAE, the atmosphere is even headier. This is much smaller and has been renovated to its original splendour, with

the subtle but welcome addition of air-conditioning and modern facilities. Head here for textiles, spices and a great little cafe.

Traders have been gathering here to eat, drink, gossip and shop for generations. Be sure to join them at the souk’s cafe before or after shopping. The textiles are a speciality and each, apparently small, stall is crammed floor to ceiling with an incredible variety which will quickly be unfurled to wow you. Be wowed and happily.
