This eighth edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.
Sharjah is famed as the emirate of festivals for good reason, but the appeal reaches far beyond the spectacular events to attractions in every corner of this magical emirate.
It is a source of great pride for all of us that Sharjah is known as the emirate of festivals. With such a busy and exciting calendar it is no wonder that the rest of the world flocks today to Sharjah for our spectacular events.
Events take place throughout the year and throughout the emirate but none are bigger or more spectacular than the Sharjah Water Festival and the Sharjah Light Festival. In their very different ways both festivals reaffirm and boost the emirate’s ability to organise and host world-class local and international events.
The Sharjah Water Festival stands out amongst all sports, cultural and entertainment events in the region, blending the glory of the past with the prestige of the present. It has enhanced Sharjah’s profile and strengthened its position on the world tourism map.
Embracing futuristic art forms and showcasing the emirate’s architectural and cultural heritage, the Sharjah Light Festival is a pioneering attraction for the entire nation. Together these two festivals lead the way for a host of other events that attract visitors of all ages from all over the world.
Beyond the events themselves, visitors to Sharjah find a fascinatng land to explore with a great diversity of attractions, a fascinating and accessible heritage, and the most modern of infrastructures. The festivals need only be the start of the adventure.

There is so much to see and do in Sharjah city, so many headline attractions and a great many more hidden secrets to be found. Delve, explore and discover by taking to the streets. Walking opens up the possibility of finding the very best little shops and cafes, of enjoying great vistas and quiet corners. There is such incredible diversity in Sharjah that you can wander from modern metropolitan scenes to ancient heritage areas, past incredible shopping locations to picnic perfect parks and beaches.

Al QasbaThe Mediterranean architecture and alfresco lifestyle make Al Qasba one of region’s most desired destinations. Amongst the canalside cafes, chic boutiques and international restaurants there is a wonderful atmosphere. Al Qasba is a beautiful locale and an essential stopping point on any walking tour. It is a great place for a meal at the beginning or end of a long walk and a host of kiosks serve what must be one of the finest collections of ice cream in the

region. Fully-charged, the eager walker can even enjoy some fun reconnaissance of the paths ahead. Traditional boats, abras, offer tours around the lagoon. For an aerial perspective, take to the 60m high ferris wheel, the Eye of the Emirates, which affords views over the rooftops.
Sharjah is a city made for walking – stroll around lagoons, through parks, down tree-lined boulevards, over bridges, past bustling souks, through labyrinthine ancient passageways and among beachside palm trees.
Walking TourWherever you start your walking tour from, all paths seem to lead to the corniche. Winding all the way around the three lagoons, along the creek and beaches, it is possible to walk the entire length of Sharjah’s west coast coastline. It would be some undertaking in one trip, nearly 40km in all. It is easier to select a section. From Al Qasba, around Khalid Lagoon to the Heritage and Arts Area and ending up on the beach can be achieved in 10km, with plenty of possible excursions if you have extra distance in your legs.
Lagoons & ParksLike all the great cities, Sharjah’s natural setting is impressive. The city has built up around the creek and three lagoons and the maritime heritage now makes for a fascinating and pleasant setting – with walking paths around all of them. Al Mamzar Lagoon, on the border with Dubai, is the furthest south, the smallest and the quietest – although it does offer jetskis for hire. Al Khan Lagoon is next and has the Sharjah Aquarium and Maritime Museum at its tip and Al Qasba at its base. Khalid Lagoon is the city’s centrepiece and has the fantastic Al Majaz and Al Jazeera parks.
Civilisation’s StoryThe Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation is a world-class wonder of an attraction.
Historic ArtefactsThe many museums of the Heritage Area help to bring the past alive.
Artistic InsightsSharjah Art Museum features ancient and modern work from local and foreign artists.
Aerial PioneersAl Mahatta Museum, near the Central Souk, was the region’s first ever international airport.
Calligraphic WonderThe exquisite traditional artform is celebrated at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum.
Seafaring TalesThe Maritime Museum on Al Khan Lagoon details the role of the sea in Sharjah’s origins.
Sharjah is famed worldwide for its collection of museums – and some of the best of them are a short stroll of the corniche. For more information see www.sharjahmuseums.ae or Listings on p.32.

Al Noor MosqueOne of the city’s most important landmarks, Al Noor Mosque overlooks Khalid Lagoon and has become an internationally-recognised symbol of Sharjah.
Shopping FestivalsThere are two hugely popular, emirate-wide shopping festivals in spring and summer, and other smaller events through the year. With fantastic discounts and promotions, they attract shopping tourists from all over the world. Sharjah Spring Promotions (January-February) Sharjah Summer Promotions (June-July) www.sharjahtourism.ae
The CornicheTo promenade the great, tree-lined boulevard of the corniche is to enjoy Sharjah at its best.Avenues of trees provide picturesque shade, the gently lapping lagoon waters bring distraction and a cooling breeze. The footpath follows the lagoons edge, circling around Sharjah’s key areas and providing access to plenty of points of interest.
While in the early morning it is popular with joggers, the rest of the day sees a more sedate pace to the corniche. There are cafes, parks, shopping malls and museums within easy reach of the lagoon; many of the shiny towers that overlook the lagoon have restaurants with great views.
There are distractions too along the lagoons themselves with dhow trips available in places and the Marbella Resort and Hotel Holiday International good options for lagoon side leisure facilities.
Souks & Markets Apart from being as ideal places to pick up stunning souvenirs, the souks and markets are also very atmospheric spots.Al Qasba often has special shopping stalls set up alongside the canal. Al Majaz Park, beautifully renovated and the next stop around Khalid Lagoon from Al Qasba, also has market stalls for key events. But the emirate’s headline shopping attraction is further along the corniche. The Central Souk

Just north of the Central Souk are the fish, fruit and vegetable, and pot and plant markets. These all make for many great photo opportunities. The fish market is best either early in the morning or late in the day, while the others are all day affairs.

Walking Tour EssentialsAll of Sharjah is worth exploring on foot. To make it easier and more interesting pick up a map and guidebook from a bookshop or hotel. If you do get lost just ask for directions, jump in a taxi, or settle into a cafe and enjoy the evening food bustle.
Heritage DaysEvery April the Heritage Area comes alive with re-enactment displays of traditional songs, dances, craftwork and cooking. Modern crowds turn out in force for the heritage fun. For more information see www.sharjahtourism.ae.
Heritage & Arts Area Beautifully restored and with many great museums, this area is evocative of a Sharjah from times past. The labyrinth of passageways, ornate hardwood doors and hanging oil lamps seem to echo with history. Wandering through the Heritage and Arts Area is a step back in time to a Sharjah before the discovery of oil, when traditional values were at their strongest and life was perhaps a little harder but less complicated.
Sharjah grew prosperous on trade, seafaring and pearls. It was one of the most important ports in the Gulf and there were wealthy citizens with diverse business interests. Some of the mansions of that pioneering generation have been lovingly restored and are now home to a series of fascinating museums and attractions. The Heritage Area also has a traditional mosque, a theatrical centre and one of the oldest souks in the entire region.
Souk Al Arsah is a great attraction in its own right. The authentic look and feel of the market has been retained with subtle, tasteful upgrading of the facilities to include toilets and air conditioning. The original
shoppers would not have had such comforts. They would though have enjoyed the coffee and tea which are still served by stall keepers and at the market cafe. It was once the key trading point for Bedouin from the desert interior to meet with maritime traders
with silks and spices from far afield. Today the fare is no less exotic; there is an incredible variety of trinkets and textiles from all over Asia. The Arts Area is dominated by the Sharjah Art Museum but contains several smaller galleries, craft shops and a few idyllic cafes.
Beaches There is something wonderful about a city with beaches – and if you wander beyond the mouth of the creek, Sharjah’s beaches are wonderful indeed.Wide, white-sand beaches, palm-lined boulevards, picnic shades and great eating options – the beaches of Sharjah city are a wonderful escape from the metropolis. And splashing through the surf is a perfect, refreshing end to a walking tour.
Just north of the creek the stretch of beaches begins with the Radisson Blu Hotel and Sharjah Ladies’ Club (both highly recommended, see Listings p.32) before the public beaches and fishermen’s harbour. As a sunset spot the setting is unbeatable. Whether with five-star finery or with a beach picnic (the cafeterias near the fishermen’s harbour are a bit of an insider’s secret), the sun will sink perfectly into the horizon.

Boasting the region’s most diverse selection of beaches, coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman means remote wilderness areas and bustling city beaches, crescent bays, hidden coves and endless stretches of sand.
Best Beaches BEST FOR:
Beach ResortsThe most famous of all is the luxurious Radisson Blu Resort. There is also a good selection of hotels on the city’s west-side.
DiningThe city’s beach resorts all have good ‘sand between your toes’ options - or try the brilliant Beit Al Noketha restaurant on Kalba beach over on the East Coast. Khor Fakkan beach has several fast-food cafes - otherwise pick your own picnic spot.
FootballBeach football is a way of life in Kalba on the East Coast. There are goals set up along the sands and visitors are often encouraged to join in. Full sports facilities can be found at Khor Fakkan and at the west coast beach resorts.

JetskisIn the city, Al Mamzar lagoon’s western shore is the place to hire a jetski and race with friends. On the East Coast, Khor Fakkan has many places to hire jetskis.
Ladies’ BeachesSharjah Ladies Club, just north of the creek, is a fantastic, full-facility health club and spa with a wonderful private beach.
SunsetsThe northern stretch of beaches, up to the Ajman border, are the ultimate sunset spots. As the sun drops into the horizon enjoy a snack from the many cafeterias. Alternatively, try the nearby Coral Beach Resort.
TurtlesWildlife watching does not get much better than at the remote Khor Kalba beach. You can drive right up to the water’s edge and camp overnight; the reward: turtles, dolphins and rare birds. The remote coves north of Khor Fakkan are also good spots. On the west coast, head to Sharjah Aquarium and the old fishing village of Al Khan.

Khor FakkanMagnificently set in a crescent bay at the foothills of the Hajar Mountains, the town boasts a 3,000 year history but is today as renowned for its restaurants.
The many attractions of Khor Fakkan include a huge sweeping beach with sports facilities and every conceivable watersport on offer from the Oceanic Hotel. Inland, the old fort affords fabulous views.
28
Off Road ExploringThe rugged interior is what your 4X4 was made for. Take a tour or join experienced friends and explore the many wonderful desert and wadi routes. Try Fossil Rock, west of Dhaid, and the wadis above Khor Fakkan.

for picnic provisions as well as journey essentials from the toy and sweet shops. If you make it here early enough, a morning of camel racing at the nearby track is a fantastic experience.
Mountains And Ocean A landscape of geological drama and cultural intrigue.Beyond Al Dhaid, the road climbs up through the dramatic Hajar Mountains. Ancient and foreboding, these hills rise to nearly 2,000 metres, but hide within their folds small farmsteads where the scant fresh water is celebrated in palm groves, orchards and vegetable gardens. Occasional roadside stalls offer travellers the opportunity to buy local produce and support the community. Extraordinary tunnels, the latest from Diftah to Shis, transport you through the mountain range and give access to some of the most isolated spots. Then it is a winding road down to the Arabian Ocean and Khor Fakkan.
On the opposite side of the road, the National Park is a great location for a picnic or barbecue – and there are fantastic leisure facilities to exhaust any young passengers before a long drive. To escape the weather, and further occupy the kids, the Discovery Centre is a fantastic, fun and interactive science museum attraction right next to the park.
Desert And OasesThe great rolling sea of sand hides bustling oasis towns, ancient fossils, and a world-leading wildlife centre. There are leopards amongst the dunes. There are cheetahs and flamingos and oryx too, not that you would guess it from the road. The tarmac draws an improbable line across the sunset-coloured sands, stretching right through the desert landscape that begins as soon as you leave the city behind. About 25km in, Sharjah Desert Park has an amazing collection of indigenous and exotic wildlife at the Arabian Wildlife Centre, as well as the Children’s Farm and Natural
History and Botanical Museums. Nearby and visible from a great distance, the Sharjah Monument makes for a magnificent viewpoint over the great desert.
The sands do relent. After another 25km the oasis town of Al Dhaid marks the beginning of the gravel plains that reach to the Hajar Mountains on the eastern horizon. Famed for its fresh fruit and vegetables, the shopping is good here, perfect

JewelleryA selection of traditional and modern items can be found.
PotteryAlong the road, there are many stalls selling pots and plants.
LanternsAtmospheric coloured glass lanterns make great gifts.
Souvenir ShoppingFrom roadside stalls to swanky shopping malls, the route from Sharjah to Khor Fakkan offers great opportunities for souvenir hunters. Al Dhaid particularly has great shopping variety.
